After the annexation to Nazi Germany in 1938 and subsequent occupation by the victorious Allied powers, Austria's 1955 State Treaty declared the country "permanently neutral" as a condition of the Soviet military withdrawal. The Soviet collapse relieved the external pressure to remain unaligned, but neutrality had evolved into a part of Austrian cultural identity, which has led to an ongoing public debate over whether Vienna legitimately can remain outside of European security structures. A wealthy country, Austria joined the European Union in 1995 and, like many EU members, is adjusting to the new European currency and struggling with high unemployment Geography

Following the chaos of World War II, Czechoslovakia became a communist nation within Soviet-ruled Eastern Europe. Soviet influence collapsed in 1989, and Czechoslovakia once more was an independent country turning toward the West. The Slovaks and the Czechs agreed to separate peacefully on 1 January 1993. Slovakia has experienced more difficulty than the Czech Republic in developing a modern market economy Geography

Extractions: HOW TO WRITE A BETTER PAPER The following comments and advice are a result of the hundreds of papers that I have read as a teacher. I hope they will help you do a better job with yours. Writing is important to almost any career and certainly to your success in continuing toward your college degree. Probably the most important piece of advice that I can give you is that if you are having trouble with your writing or have doubts about how to write properly, seek help. I am always willing to review drafts, provided you get them to me in plenty of time. The college also has help available in the Writing Center (EMC 308, ext. 3439) and the grammar hotline (469-4413). We all want to help you learn proper writing and produce a good product; however, you have to do your part. General Rules Regarding Composition Start Early The biggest single problem I see with student writing is waiting until the last minute to begin. I have had students try to pass off a hasty scrawled few pages paper clipped together as a term paper. It takes time to do a good paper. Leaving it until the last minute guarantees: (a) you will make mistakes, (b) the paper will be poorly written and organized, and (c) you won't do a good job of proofreading, if you proofread it at all. When I get a paper at the last minute, I know it is going to be bad. You'll produce much better work if you do it early, rather than waiting until the panic of the last week. Early papers also find me in a much more congenial mood when it comes to grading.

Extractions: C.P.E. Bach was the most illustrious son of Johann Sebastian Bach . He studied with his father and taught his youngest brother, Johann Christian. Carl Philipp Emanuel began his career studying law, but nine years later became court musician to Prince Frederick the Great. In 1767 he succeeded his godfather, Telemann , as music director at the Hamburg church. Carl Philipp Emanuel wrote keyboard works, concertos, symphonies, and choral works. In 1774 and 1775, C.P.E. updated his father's valuable source of information about the Bach family of musicians. Died: July 28, 1750, Leipzig (Germany) He was one of the greatest Baroque composers, along with Handel . He came from a family composed of 7 generations of professional musicians. All he cared about was music, and there is a legend that he would walk up to 30 miles to hear famous musicians perform. His most famous works are the 'Brandenburg Concerti', the 'Well-tempered Clavier', 'The Art of Fugue' and his 'Mass in B-minor'. His music was mostly ignored by the public for a long time, but Mozart and Beethoven admired his music. Mendelssohn was responsible for a revival of the 'St. Matthew Passion'. He was such an original composer that his music changed the course of music history, and his death marked the beginning of the Classical age of music.

Extractions: for Scholarship Timothy Haney, a first-year student from Janesville, Wis., is the first in his family to attend college. Thanks to an expanded Wisconsin scholarship initiative, Haney's decision to continue his education was a simple one. The scholarship program, funded by The Coca-Cola Foundation, provides $460,000 in scholarship support over the next four years for "first-generation" students from Wisconsin. Twenty-one students were awarded the $5,000 scholarship, one for each campus affiliated with the Wisconsin Foundation for Independent Colleges (WFIC). Although the Coca-Cola scholarship is relatively new, WFIC has been bringing scholarships to Ripon students for years. The UPS Foundation education endowment fund has been awarding scholarships to WFIC schools since 1974. A charitable arm of the United Parcel Service, the UPS Foundation awarded $73,500 in scholarships to 31 students this year, including Ripon sophomore Jesse Rye of Algoma, Wis. Through WFIC's Fred J. Peterson Scholarship, five students from Door County including Lindsay Bieri, a former non-traditional student at Ripon from Sturgeon Bay, Wis. each received $1,500 to assist with college. The scholarship was established in 1995 to honor the founder of Peterson Builders Inc.
