Product Description
Eat, drink, and enjoy the creepy yuckiness of Monster Eyeballs, Chocolate Spider Clusters, Buried Alive Cupcakes, and Screaming Red Punch. In her colorful collection of frightful foods, Sharon Parrish Bowers shares the fun of baking, decorating, and indulging in delicious treats that celebrate witches and jack o' lanterns, ghosts and graveyards.

Everyone loves Halloween. It's a holiday that is pure fun and childish joy, an excuse to dress up and eat treats. Packaged candy may be the common reward for trick-or-treating, but plates of Spiderweb Cookies or big bowls of Sticks and Stones Caramel Corn are perfect contributions to school Halloween events, tailgating parties, neighborhood open houses, adult costume parties, and even afternoon play dates. It's difficult to imagine an autumn gathering that wouldn't be even more fun with ghoulish goodies to share.

These frightful treats are not just for October, though. A birthday party for a nine-year-old or a scary movie sleepover for teenagers practically demands an I'Scream Cake or Spidery Cupcakes. And Chocolate-Chip Pumpkin Bars with Orange Glaze would be welcome at an office coffee break or an afternoon tea party.

Baking from Ghoulish Goodies is a wonderful way to celebrate the change of seasons and the pleasure of working with kids in the kitchen. Baking cupcakes and making fudge are great activities for autumn afternoons, when the weather turns cool and the kids are underfoot after school. Put them to work stirring, decorating, and scraping pumpkin seeds. These are recipes that parents and kids can have fun making together. And the entire family will enjoy eating a warm Choco-Bat Cookie for dessert.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good recipies; ebook could have offered more
Overall, I enjoyed the author; she's punchy and funny, and delivers great recipies that I can definately use. However, there are a few flaws to this book that make me wish I had purchased the printed copy. While the few pictures were in full color (at least on my PC) there weren't nearly enough pictures for the price of this e-book. There are several recipies that do not have any pictures, and some have cartoony, "concept" artwork that leave much to be desired. Also, the repeatitive instructions gives it an almost condescending tone - nearly every recipe that required melted chocolate explained how to melt it in either the microwave or in a double-boiler.Once would have been enough; no need to beat it over our heads.

Would I recommend this book for others? Sure, if you can get it on sale, or in printed form. Otherwise, don't waste your $10.00.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Treats for your Halloween Party
Of the Halloween books I have read over the past few weeks, this is hands down the best! The introduction is full of nostalgia and visions of Halloweens past. I could not help but smile and nod my head in agreement as she described the excitement of sorting candy in front of the television before bedtime or trading your spoils with your siblings. The introduction is also full of practical information that one should read before rolling up your sleeves to create these festive treats. As a matter of fact, I attempted my first cookie icing (royal icing recipe on p. 61), at her bidding. She was right! It is incredibly simple and beats out any store-bought icing I have purchased in the past. I also purchased paste colorings for the first time (based on her recommendation). I originally checked this book out from the library, but after my family went nuts for the first few recipes, I knew I had to purchase this book and make it a permanent part of my personal library. I cannot wait to photograph the food for our Halloween party this year! Oh, and did I mention that the recipes are delicious? Happy Halloween!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Halloween Ideas
I love this book!! Great ideas and recipes and nice photos. I will definitly be trying some of these this year for halloween.

4-0 out of 5 stars My daughter liked it alot
I purchased this book for my daughter as she does cakes on the side and I thought that it had some "GREAT" ideas for Halloween. She really liked this book and will do some of the items that are in this book. I would recommend this book for anyone who likes to try new things for Halloween.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun book for halloween
All kinds of creepy, yucky looking things (anyone for black Kool-Ade?). It's appealing to young kids, especially boys, but there's plenty in there to make you popular with the adult crowd for the halloween party. I got this for my daughter because she likes cake decorating (she used to work in bakeries), and she's also a Boy Scout leader. She's been having fun with it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE this book!
Very nice book on great ideas for Halloween! Of course it does not include ALL of B&G's ideas, because they want you to visit their website and buy their magazines, etc...but for me, this is perfect. LOVE it!!

2-0 out of 5 stars A bit simple
Not that I did not like it at all, but I expected much more, maybe because I am not American and I was not sure what I was buying. There are some nice ideas, but in general, nothing that I have not seen around before and no easy projects to do with kids or so...

5-0 out of 5 stars Hallowgreat!
Love this book as an addition to my Halloween collection. Great inspiration and ideas! A lot of pumpkin themed ideas so if you're decorating with pumpkins, it's a great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific inspiring book - full of inventive ideas!
I am a working mom with not much free time so I was looking for a book with quick and easy craft ideas that I could make with my young daughter. This book is full of great inventive ideas for making simple and cute decorations for the home, easy costumes ideas and yummy snacks that are Halloween themed. We plan on making some of the decorations this weekend. And we are bringing the moody monster muffins and creepy crawlers to a friend's party!

3-0 out of 5 stars Had high expectations...
Don't get me wrong, i did enjoy this book. But i expected a little more out of Better Homes and Gardens. I ordered this at the same time as Matthew Mead's Monster Book of Halloween and to be honest i got a lot more ideas out of Matthew Mead's book. I collect Halloween decorating books so i might be overly critical. I do think this is a good book for anyone starting a collection or for a family as well. Lots of cute ideas! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Halloween Celebrations - not really much detail
To be honest I bought this book BEFORE I read other feedback, which I now know was a mistake. The book arrived much quicker than I had anticipated which was a bonus but it still leaves a lot to be desired. Personally I think for the price it should be much more substantial and detailed. I don't think there's a single thing in it that I haven't already thought of or done myself in past years. I purchased it for inspiration but am sadly disappointed.

2-0 out of 5 stars Light on..
Nice photos, and some good ideas, but there are so few of them!Has the potential to be great, but it's just too short.Divided into sections, with 3 or 4 items in each. The title says it all: 'shown in 120 photographs'.Lots of photos, little to actually read. What's there is good, but there's just not enough of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive guide with some excellent recipes
Halloween tends to be an interesting time of year in the Redhart household. Personally I am always ready to get into the party mood, although in the past there has rarely been so much as a 'ghost' of a chance that my wife might join in. Indeed, Doreen has always demonstrated a rather pronounced level of disdain for youngsters- the roots of which could probably be traced back to the birth of our daughter Dawn. Sadly the careless 'mistakes' that have since led to the arrivals of both Horace and Crispin did little to change her mind about the merits of children. Anyhow, although Doreen would never participate, I have had some cracking parties in the past. Sadly, however, in 2006 Doreen decided to ban Halloween altogether, much to the fury of the trick or treaters who came to our door...

Well, you should have seen the mess our house was in that night! There was rude graffiti daubed across the garage wall, an assortment of rubbish strewn all over the lawn (including a USED contraceptive!), and traces of human excrement smeared down the lounge windows. Indeed, with the house already in such a terrible state, I wouldn't have thought that a few Halloween pranks could very well have made things any worse. How wrong I was! Much as I would like to think that we are part of a highly respectable neighbourhood, I wouldn't deny that there are a few unsavoury kids in the community. However, the last thing I would have expected to receive through my window was a pig's head tied to a brick!

Anyhow, Doreen was absolutely furious! While she can be grumpy at the best of times, she was sorely unimpressed at having a severed head invade the privacy of our bedroom at 2 am (although, by the next day, she had calmed down enough to use it as the basis for a very lovely stew). Still, last Halloween, Doreen seemed to have learned her lesson from this incident, for she picked up a copy of this extremely helpful book and set about organising celebrations herself! I am pleased to say that we had an absolutely cracking party! The book covers anything and everything, including party games and how to make scary costumes (which Doreen had never previously been known to wear- aside from her négligée, that is!). There are also some very wise recipes for healthier alternatives to sweets and chocolate. Indeed, when trick or treaters came to the door, they were greeted by a cackling, gap-toothed old witch (kitted out in a werewolf costume) who was extremely generous about handing out some nutritious (yet tasty!) treacle flapjacks. How surprising it was to see Doreen getting into the swing of things with quite such verve! It was only later on that I discovered an empty bottle of high-strength laxative solution in the kitchen bin, but I'm afraid it was already far too late to do anything about it. Some of the kids who called by had been wearing extremely high-quality costumes. If they had been hired from a fancy dress shop, they almost certainly would have had to put down a sum of money that would be retained in the event of damage. Yes, let's just hope that any 'deposits' that were left on the costumes were not especially sizeable!

PS. While Doreen must take full responsibility for her unconscionable actions, I can't help but feel that a fair chunk of blame lies at my own two feet. A few days after the pig's head came crashing into my home, I found out that it was actually a reminder from Mickey 'Gold Teeth' O'Flanagan about my considerable debts on the greyhound track- but, of course, I wasn't exactly going to tell Doreen about that!

1-0 out of 5 stars Lame from start to finish!
I just received this book, which I pre-ordered last August. What a disappointment! Boring recipes for things like pumpkin soup and pumpkin muffins, boring costumes (cat, skeleton, vampire) and boring decorations. This book was previously published as Trick or Treat, and now has new photos, but isn't worth the price of shipping, much less the cost of the book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Yummy!
This book has so many really cute and creative ideas in it.Even if you never make them, it's a really fun book to look at the pictures, and pretend you could be that creative!I have tried many of the recipes in this book.I have found them to not only look good, but they were also the main topic of conversation at the gathering. And the best part of all...... they were YUMMY!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Got to Buy!
Hungry Halloween: featuring Movie Monster Munchies, Bewitched Buffet, and Dead Man's Diner (Volume 1)

The book is full of entertaining and creative recipes. Some are challenging but the instructions are clear and complete. The varity of ingredients are readily obtainable and makes it appealing to all ages and pallets. The additional advice on decorating is nice to have. The author truly knows how to celebrate Halloween!

5-0 out of 5 stars Whether for a huge bash or to amuse your family, these are truly novel & creative cooking ideas
This isn't my first Halloween cookbook.I have many.Trouble is many of them have cute names for recipes such as "witches fingers" but putting a whole olive at the end of a breadstick isn't tasty, nor does it look like a finger to partygoers who didn't read the recipe name. This book is different. They are the most amusing and creative dishes I'd ever seen for a Halloween bash or to just amuse your kids or loved ones on Halloween.Heck, I said I loved the 7 layer dip with the witch on the top layer made out of guacamole so much surrounded by a sour cream background, I'll never serve it another way year round. It's funny as all get out!

This is the kind of book you can't possibly even flip through without saying "LOOK AT THIS!" and showing the pictures to someone else in the room. For example, she makes a lasagna that looks just like a mummy with the noodles overlapping exactly like mummy bandages and eyeballs peeking out. These are VERY artistic but the beauty is you don't have to be an artist to create them--they are simple and if you really have difficulty being creative she helps out even further with stencils in the back of the book you can just overlay to do designs on things like wonton shells.

The author apparently has huge Halloween parties based upon the clever photos in the book such one depicting a "Dead Man's Diner" where they made a kitchen bar (I am guessing--it looks so much like a diner it's hard to tell if it is someone's real kichen) look exactly like a 50s diner but all the food looks like it's made from body parts and the servers have "bloody aprons".It's crazy and clever...you get more than just recipes. If you are one to do an all-out bash on Halloween, you get ideas that are VERY clever but easy too.

Here's the odd thing...the food is good!! I know that's the whole point of a cookbook, but I've found in the past that Halloween cookbooks are often for the visual, not the taste.

There are color photos of every dish

There are theme party ideas with photos of actual parties...real parties that utilized the theme are included

There are ideas of how to use things sold at the party stores during Halloween such as a brain or face mold

The book is 100 pages, easy to follow

Conclusion:I bought another Halloween cookbook the week before this one.It didn't even come close to the super clever stuff in here.. I just love this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK - not great
I realized once I got this book that it was a self-published affair. It wasn't exactly what I was hoping for. The layout is simple and straight-forward, a recipe on each spread with an accompanying photo -- though many of the photos are oddly blurry. Many of the recipes call for strong artistic ability or considerable time to create -- painting of images on individual taco chips or won tons, hand sculpting things out of cheese, etc.or just didn't look that appealing -- like meatloaf shaped like feet.I throw a big Halloween party every year, but there really wasn't anything in this book that inspired me to want to put the time and effort in to recreating it. Others may enjoy the book more, I don't want to dismiss it out of hand -- it is an interesting collection of food art, just not for the average busy hostess.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Fun!
Hungry Halloween by Beth Klosterboer is a wonderful book for Halloween fans of all ages. Personally I can not only follow the wonderful recipes but also many more spring to mind after seeing how Beth's mind works! Most recipes/foods can be easily adapted by using Beth's ideas so that you can appeal to children of all ages who enjoy this holiday. My girls are now in their 20s but Halloween was a favorite time of year. We created Happy Pumpkin Day magic by hosting their friends to an informal gathering before/during and after trick or treating. It soon became more important than running around the neighborhood in costume. These delightful ideas will have you putting out your own spread and creating a spooky mood ! Beware- you will become Halloween central! Great job Beth!Hungry Halloween: featuring Movie Monster Munchies, Bewitched Buffet, and Dead Man's Diner (Volume 1) ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not frightful, not fun
I have 2 or 3 books from BHG in my Halloween library, and I doubt there will ever be another one added, unless it's a gift. There's nothing more frustrating to me than buying a book and finding that I've seen half of the ideas before in other publications. A close second is finding that I've paid for a book that has nothing in it I can use.

1-0 out of 5 stars embarrassingly tacky
I found not a single usable idea in this book. The ideas are decidedly unimaginative and the results quite ugly.A friend bought this for me at a bargain shop without looking inside--thank goodness she spent only $2 for it.Even that was a waste.

3-0 out of 5 stars 101 ideas, 10 good ones.
This book contains a few good ideas, but none that I would use. Best used for decorating your house for a pre-schooler's Halloween party.More CUTE than scary.Contains nice color photos and easy directions.

1-0 out of 5 stars simplisticand uninspiring
This book was a total disappointment . I expectedcreative adult halloween ideas--things I would want to keep year after year. There were only2 projects I foundinteresting-the halloween tree trims & the silver swirl pumpkin(the cover pumpkin) However,If you are looking for very simple ideas geared towards little children---this book may be what your looking for.
The best thing I can say about this book is it only cost me 1.49.

5-0 out of 5 stars This really is a great Halloween Book!
Don't believe the reader from Palmyra. This book is great. I made the pumpkin on the cover (my kids helped bend the solder) and several others in the book. They all got rave reviews at our halloween party. The crafts are unusual, but not difficult, the recipes are good and the book's presentation of all the crafts is top-notch. I own over 25 Halloween craft books and this is one of the first I'll reach for each year. I can't wait to ready the new book in this series "Halloween Fun". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Halloween fun for the family
There are a number of Halloween books out on the market for decorating, baking and costume making, but this is one of the few that actually hassomething new in it!

The crafts are clever, but actually look doable wtih things you might already have on hand. The costumes ideas are fun and innovative, the food ideas are also really cute, but not overly-complicated.While some classic ideas never die, this book puts a nice twist on things like "body parts" games.

Of course, the ideas come from the monthly magazine that Disney produces, Family Fun, and if you get the magazine, you'll have already seen alot of these things in print or on their website. Still, the book is nicely layed-out, easy to flip through and a good resource of party and costume ideas for both kids and their grown-ups.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Pleased
This book is an awesome resource for make-at-home costumes and decorations. The ideas are so cute, easy to follow, and where else can you find a recipe for slime?

2-0 out of 5 stars SADLY DISAPPOINTED
If you own the Disney Family Fun Crafts book and the Family Fun Parties book, you have seen most of the ideas in this book.I was really excited to get this book but there werent many new ideas. :(

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Ideas

5-0 out of 5 stars Geared Toward School Parties
Great for school parties, hence the title. Loads of ideas, but quite a bit of recycling from other seasonal party books in this series (Halloween BINGO, Christmas BINGO, Valentines BINGO, etc.).

Many standard party ideas you have probably seen before. Like any large party-idea book, 1/2 of the content is not all that useful or relevant. Still, there are a few gems in here, so it will be useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have!
Great book! I purchased this used, and I really like it.Definitely one I'll use over and over for family and school parties!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best party in 30 years!
I suddenly found myself being the "room mother" two weeks before the Halloween Party.Desparately, I searched for a source to plan an excellent, low cost, fun party for 28 5th graders on short notice! This book was perfect.Although the crafts seemed a bit involved, the game ideas were perfect. The book was divided into themes such as witch, bat, pumpkin etc. and each theme had associated foods, games, crafts and decorations. The game ideas were easy to put together and I improvised a bit.The teacher said it was the most organized and fun party she had seen in 30 years of teaching!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Helper!
I've used this book to help in the classroom and for a neighborhood party. It is practical and helpful. A good way to start the planning session.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great helper for the clueless!
I am a first year teacher and this book helped me by leaps and bounds. Almost all of the activities are listed to be for grades K-6, but I was able to modify (if at all) many of them for my pre-K classroom. Every section - games, crafts, food, etc - is broken up into subcategories such as cats, frankenstein, bats, etc so the Halloween Party can have its own theme as well, if you'd like. I can't even begin to explain how useful the entire book has been to me! It took all the stress out of putting on a huge party with students, siblings, and parents galore. ... Read more

Product Description

Scare up a boo-tacular Halloween at your house with excellent decorations and party ideas. Shock everyone silly with nibbles from creepy containers--everyone will want handfuls of Ghost Sticks and Yummy Mummies, not to mention a Hand Full of Candy. Dare little trick-or-treaters to enter at their own risk by making a witch-hat light and flying bats--they'll get a real thrill when they see cool decorations like these. Then give them a frightful feast of Dracula's bow-tie pasta washed down with a fizzy clear drink chilled with spider ice cubes. The bat napkins and black mask candles will guarantee that the table sets a perfect Halloween mood and get all of the festivities going. An awfully good time is guaranteed for all.
Amazon.com Review
Interior designer Jill Williams Grover remembers that as ayoung girl, she chose her trick-or-treat visits not for what candyshe'd receive but because of the front porch decorations. Obviouslyher fascination with Halloween continued into adulthood, and hermarvelously inventive guide shows you how to turn your own home into acoveted trick-or-treating stop or the perfect place for a Halloweenparty. "Scary Nibbles" offers spooky snacks, like Ghost Sticks(white-chocolate-covered pretzel sticks) or Hand Full of Candy (alatex glove fitted with pointy black fingernails and filled withjawbreakers). "Enter at Your Own Risk" lets you startle your arrivingvisitors with blood-red footprints marching up the Poppin' Walkway(the secret is bubble wrap) and provides ideas for eerie decor, suchas a witch hat luminary, masked and jeweled pumpkins, skeletontopiary, and of course, the Invisible Man. "Frightful Feast" setsforth a tablescape of ghoulish goodies, from spiderweb invitations, spider tablecloth, and bat napkins to dripping candles and Dracula'sBow Tie Pasta. "Goblin Gathering" rounds out the spooky selectionswith a Cyclops Mug, Frankenstein Cone Cake, and relevant place cards, place mats, and other tableware. Complete directions are given for allthe projects, and there are recipes for the edibles (enough for afull-fledged Halloween dinner party). The great color photos makeclear that these scary scenes are both fun and sophisticated--thoughkids will adore them, they'll also delight the grownups brave enoughto venture into your house. --Amy Handy ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not for me
I wanted to like this book! I bought it because one of the comments was so inflammatory and obviously made by someone with an agenda, that I felt sorry for the writer and wanted to give the book a chance. One of the things that bothered me the most are the random - and incorrect - usages of quotation marks. I just couldn't take the book seriously. There are some cute crafts that young children would enjoy, but there is nothing remotely scary.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Scary at all!
Having scary in the title is misleading. The book is fine for children's parties and has a few of nice ideas, but it is far from scary. However, some of the projects are too "artsie" and cute for me. If you're buying for young children's party ideas, it's a good book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Basic and boring
This book has warmed over ideas, they are nowhere close to scary. They are cutesy and meant for people who feel like Halloween isn't a "real" holiday.

4-0 out of 5 stars A cut above most
Like most Halloween craft books, this one is definitely family-friendly -- so if you want to know how to build a realistic heart that pumps blood, look elsewhere. That said, the projects in this book are definitely a cut above the average "cutesy" Halloween projects you see every year. The designs are clever, visually appealing, and easy to do.For the price, this is an excellent book.

1-0 out of 5 stars stay away from this author
I have been working in the design field for over 10 years now and I have yet to see a worse ripp off then this author not only are there no directions to her projects, but who would want to engage them selves in anything that turned out so chic and cheesey. I have personally met the author and her family I knew them for quite a while infact and never did I find that she could creatively enhance a project. she has some small skill in putting together junk so it doesn't look so much like junk. butlets face it - it's still junk. not something I would put in my house nor in my clients homes. ...
