Product Description
Never is the generosity and spirit of the Italian table more evident than at the holidays, when great food and good times are on the menu in every household. In his new book, Mario Batali captures all the flavors of this festive season with enticing recipes that showcase the brilliance of simple Italian food at its best.

Four complete menus offer abundant meals for the holidays, starting with the seafood extravaganza known as the Feast of Seven Fishes, traditionally served on Christmas Eve. Mario's rendition includes almost a dozen delectable fish and seafood dishes, from delicate sea bass ravioli to the indispensable baccalà, here served in the Vesuvian style. A magnificent boned and rolled turkey breast stuffed with roasted chestnuts is the centerpiece of a lavish Christmas Day's menu, while an assortment of alluring finger foods and a showstopping ziti-and-meatball-filled pasta dome set the tone for a lively New Year's Eve celebration. For the relaxed entertaining of New Year's Day, Mario suggests a procession of marinated salads, pastas, and stuffed vegetables, all served at room temperature, capped off with fresh homemade sausage with sweet peppers.

One of the great pleasures of cooking at this time of the year is baking, and Mario Batali Holiday Food includes recipes for a dozen irresistible holiday cookies, some authentically Italian and others family favorites Mario has relished since childhood. You'll also find a host of delectable tortes, custards, cakes, and confections as well as wine suggestions and a refreshing aperitivo to round out each holiday menu.

Whether you're creating a full-blown Italian spread or simply adding a touch of Italy to your own family traditions, Mario Batali Holiday Food will make your holiday gatherings memorably delicious.Amazon.com Review
With the infectious enthusiasm of a kid on Christmas morning, Mario Batali--who presides over a culinary empire that includes the popular Food Network television show Molto Mario, four acclaimed New York restaurants, and a wine store--presents four complete menus for the holidays and captures all the fun and festivity that epitomize Italian celebrations. True to the commitment to simple cooking evident in his first book, Simple Italian Food, the dishes here deliver maximum flavor and enjoyment without being overly complicated.

Batali's version of the famous Italian seafood extravaganza traditionally served on Christmas Eve--known as the Feast of Seven Fishes--includes no fewer than15 enticing dishes. Marinated Fresh Anchovies are both surprisingly delectable and delightful in their simplicity. Salt Cod with Capers and Mint, Grilled Lobster with Herbs and Arugula, and Sea Bass Ravioli with Marjoram and Potatoes would each be showstoppers as the centerpiece of any meal. Served together, they comprise a truly unforgettable feast.

The Christmas Day menu is equally lavish, centering on a succulent boned turkey breast stuffed with chestnuts and prunes, while the New Year's Day spread is pure decadence. The latter begins innocently enough, with a refreshing aperitivo of tangerine juice, Compari, and soda, then proceeds through a parade of richly flavored dishes, from the hot-pepper-spiked Octopus in the Style of the Prostitutes of Napoli, to the meatball-filled "mythic pasta dome" known as Timpano di Maccheroni, to the prosciutto-wrapped Braised Pork Roll. An irresistible selection of dolci (sweets), including Cinnamon Chocolate Pudding with Pine Nuts and Waffle Cookies, rounds out the meal. New Year's Day welcomes a relaxed daylong open house replete with an ever-changing spread of antipasti, pasta, and dolci, most of which can be prepared at leisure and served at room temperature, enabling the hosts to enjoy the party as much as the guests.

Photos, along with helpful wine suggestions and practical advice on technique, accompany each menu. Throughout, Batali paints a portrait of his Italian-American family that reminds readers that the simple joy of being together is what the holidays are really about. The 60 simple yet elegant recipes can be mixed, matched, and adapted for any occasion. Served together or separately, each is cause for celebration. --Robin Donovan ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Something's Always Not Right
The recipes in this cookbook seem to be a bit "off". Vegetable oil and anise seeds in the pizzelle, limoncello in the cannoli shells, the use of mint, no baking powder in the strufoli, no garlic in the Neapolitan meat sauce (?) Thyme in the basic tomato sauce, sheep's casings for pork sausage.....I used to watch him on TV, and there was something unsettling about his show.I couldn't put my finger on it. Something always seemed wrong with the recipes. They never hit the mark. You would never say, "Now, that's Italian". I've been all over Italy many many times, and Batali's creations somehow don't ring true.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Four Menus, Four Festive Meals."
This is a compendium of distinctive recipes designed for four holidays, from Christmas eve through to New years day in elegant Italian style. The recipes make use of seasonal ingredients & shows a modest cross section of the regional variety of Italian cooking traditions. But, it is on the whole a book on the region of Campania. It includes color pictures of the food itself that are both more numerous & of finer quality than in his other books. Like many Asians, Italians truly revel in small portions of several types of dishes.

This is cooking from scratch, no breezy shortcuts here. But, the instructions are direct & the results are very worthwhile. The sixty recipes are adaptable so that they can be mixed & matched for any occasion one wishes. From the Christmas day turkey breast stuffed with Prunes & Chesnuts to the vibrant Tangerine juice Aperitivo, you will find all these recipes mouth watering. Lastly, the wine suggestions helped in the celebratory enjoyment that is the "heart & soul of Italian cuisine."

5-0 out of 5 stars A Treasure!
I just re-ordered this book as I lost the first one I bought. Contrary to what some other reviews have said, I like the fact that it is a small book with special or holiday recipes. I have several other Italian cookbooks, including the Silver Spoon and Essentials of Italian Cooking, and while I really like those books, the volume of recipes is often overwhelming when I am looking for a special holiday dish. So far I have made the broccoli saffriti, spaghetti all cozze (spicy spaghetti with mussels), Strangulapreti all sorrentina (Gnocchi with tomato sauce and Mozzella) and the pizzelles and they have all been great! Since I haven't made the other dishes I can not say how they will turn out, but so far I have not been disappointed. As for the book itself, it is truly beautiful and I enjoy looking at the pictures and reading about Mario's personal holiday experiences.

Based on my experience with this book, I am eager to buy Mario's other cookbooks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent as always
While we ultimately didn't have the opportunity to make any of these recipes for the holidays, my wife and I read through most of them and they look wonderful. We own every cookbook Mario's written and we've eaten in two of his NYC restaurants, so we're very familiar with his style and the quality of his work.In fact, the "Feast of the Seven Fishes" in the book is very much like his Christmas Eve menu at Lupa, his place on Thompson St. in the Village.

Very high recommendation from real Italian "foodies" (we spent 3 weeks in Italy last year....)

4-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous cookbook on Italian holiday food
I was really surprised by this small cookbook. Now when I saw small, it means that it isn't your typical full sized cookbook with in excess of 200 pages, it is a nice hundred pages or so cookbook. Some wonderful features of this cookbook are the pictures, the wonderful recipes, and the text that is written with the recipes.

Perhaps you are like me and enjoy cookbooks with vivid pictures.I like to know what my efforts are going to look like. This book has some of the best food photographs that I have seen. Some of this is the chosing of attractive dishes, some of it is just fabulous photography.

While I really enjoy the photographs in this book, some of that is the skill of the photographer, while the larger part of that is the choice of recipes. Mario Batali, seems to like earthy, rustic food.I like that you do not have to measure everything so exact.I like that there are natural flexibilities added into the recipes, like if you don't have xxx, use this instead.Italian cooking is all about the freshness of the ingredients, and you see this theme throughout his book.

I also like that he explains why he chose those recipes, what the significance of those recipes are. This is helpful is chosing what drinks you will serve with the food, what side dishes or desserts you will pare with the food and so much more.

I highly recommend this book to you, it really isn't just about holiday food, but more.I rate this book with 4 stars simply because the book is smaller, and for the money, if your just starting out with him, I would go with one of his standard cookbooks if you are looking for a greater resource of Italian recipes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very nice recipe book
I've always wanted this book! The Williams-Sonoma recipe books never fail to impress me (this is my 3rd book) with their descriptions, recipes and delicious looking photos. In this particular book it has recipes that are traditional including eggnog, mulled wine, turkey, goose, ham, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book
This book has amazing illustrations, and simple instructions which ake it a pleasure to use. I made a few dishes the first day I got it, they came out as beautifual and delicious as they looked in the pictures! The collection of dishes is AMAZING many are dishes I had in great restaurants and couldnt find the recipe for anywhere. I love this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Feast your heart out!
There are a number of recipes that I love in theory and usually only like in practice. These recipes involve ingredients and concepts that I find very appealing, but there's just something about the way the individual recipes get executed that leaves something to be desired. Stuffed mushrooms fall into this category. Recipes like this make great test recipes when I'm evaluating a cookbook because usually their quality is highly dependent on a careful balance of flavors, good technique, and adequate kitchen-testing. So, naturally, one of the recipes we made from this cookbook was the stuffed mushroom recipe. It turned out to be the best stuffed mushroom recipe I've ever had--everything that I've always felt stuffed mushrooms ought to be but rarely were. They were buttery, slightly crispy, flavorful, easy-to-make, and absolutely delightful.

My only reservation, and it's a tiny one, is that the cookbook sometimes sticks with older, stodgier techniques when newer, faster ones do the job just as well. I'm sure it would stick in many chefs' throats to suggest that you could spray the mushrooms with olive oil cooking spray instead of painstakingly brushing them with olive oil using a pastry brush, but I did half of the mushrooms one way and half the other and honestly couldn't tell which mushrooms were which--there were no identifiable differences in the finished product.

The full-color photographs that go with the recipes are simple, elegant and lovely. The layout is easy to understand, with the different elements of the recipes set off visually from one another and the instructions broken into bite-sized chunks. The recipes are surprisingly uncomplicated, although as mentioned in some places they could be even simpler; certainly for elegant holiday fare this is easy cooking.

The point is, no matter what I pulled from this cookbook--new, old, doubtful, sure thing--it rose to the occasion. Every single recipe delighted us. Each one left us sighing with happiness. So whether you want to make crab bisque this Christmas (or Thanksgiving, or Easter, or New Year's, or other holiday of your choice), butternut squash and apple soup, rack of lamb with cranberry-chile relish, brisket braised in red wine, wild rice pilaf with dried cranberries and pecans, chocolate mousse cake, chicken hash, panettone French toast, gougeres, eggnog, or even chocolate truffles, I highly recommend picking up a copy of this cookbook. It's definitely worthy of any special occasion you might wish to celebrate. ... Read more

Product Description

"Nigella covers just about all the quick bases in Express . . . this is a recipe collection that could get you through the holidays."
--The Washington Post

"The recipes are a mix of dishes that are quick to prepare and cook--so you can have your dinner out of the grocery bag and on to the table in half an hour or so--and dishes that are easy to prepare early in the day and then are simply left to simmer slowly."
--Good Housekeeping

"Nigella Lawson has conjured up a voluptuous volume of what she called `fast food for those who love eating.' . . . it's a Nigella-style feast . . . A perfect choice for cooks who would rather sip wine than labor over a hot stove, Nigella Express is, as the British say, brilliant."
--People

"A fast feast may seem like a concept at odds with itself, but the goddess of easy extravagance, Nigella Lawson, has figured out how to put together a lavish party menu in ultrashort order . . . That's what her latest cookbook, Nigella Express, is all about--time savers that don't compromise on flavor but are so effective you'll feel you got away with something."
--O at Home

Christmas is a time for family and friends, for tradition and treats. But, let's face it, when the pressure to feed and entertain builds up, the festive season can start to lose its sparkle . . .

That's where Nigella comes in. With her no-nonsense approach, her inspirational ideas, and her empathy for the practical realities of the season--combined here with reliable, easy-to-follow recipes and reassuring advice about planning and cooking ahead--Nigella Christmas is guaranteed to bring comfort and joy and make sure the season of good will stays that way.

Here is everything you could wish for to make your life and your Christmas easy and enjoyable: from party canapés, cocktails, and manageable mass catering, to scrumptious Christmas cakes and puddings; from no-fuss brunches to quick-and-easy homemade presents (chutneys, preserves, and other delectable standbys) and edible tree decorations. There are mouth-watering recipes with a seasonal twist, and simple menus for feeding friends and family over the extended holiday season with minimum stress and maximum enjoyment.

And, of course, exciting and inspiring variations for the Main Event itself--from her traditional super-juicy turkey with all the trimmings, to festive ginger-glazed ham and the Ultimate Christmas Pudding; from goose, rib of beef, and stuffed rolled pork, all the way to a special vegetarian Christmas feast, a chocolate pudding, a French Yule Log, an Australian Christmas Pudding, and The Boozy British Trifle.

Nigella's cakes, as always, gladden the heart--and, like many of the recipes here, are at home all year round--but her At-a-Glance Christmas Lunch Countdown, together with make-ahead and freeze-ahead tips throughout, can help take the stress and strain out of the season. With its glorious illustrations, Nigella Christmas will surely be a perennial favorite--the book we will all reach for, for inspiration and reassurance, when Christmas comes around each year.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very Nigella Christmas
I love watching Nigella's Christmas Specials and was thrilled when this book arrived. It is filled with great personal stories as well as beautiful photography. The recipes are easy to follow and the book has great tips for making a memorable holiday.

5-0 out of 5 stars Top Notch Entertaining Resource Book
"Nigella Christmas" is not just a holiday entertaining book - it's a RESOURCE book. It's a book about many things.About how to be a host, how to break down a party, how to plan your menu, how to set up your service, how to lay your table, even how to create hostess gifts. It's a full-service "how to" guide.Without a doubt - this is one of Nigella's best efforts.Completely comprehensive, thoughtful and nostalgic.I savored every page.

As another reviewer has mentioned - it's not even just for the holidays. You can use this book for any occasion or any gathering. From something as simple as a family dinner to family reunion. You are covered.A few recipe highlights:
- Rolled Stuffed Loin of Pork with Ruby Gravy
- Bourbon-Glazed Ribs
- Aromatic Christmas Ham
- Panettone and Italian Sausage Stuffing

Yummy --- now, I'm hungry for the holidays! I really enjoyed all the extra craft / gift ideas - not to mention all the table setting imagery.Full of so many ideas - I can't wait to take them for a spin myself.

A great resource for your library -- I highly recommend.

Cheers!

5-0 out of 5 stars Nigella is wonderful! And so is this book. . . .
First let me say that I was fortunate to be able to meet the wonderful Ms. Lawson on December 9, 2009 when she visited Houston:

[...]

I already had all of her other books and immediately loved her casual style and easy take on cooking. Nigella Express I think is my favorite, particularly the Pollo alla Cacciatore, but I love all of the books. I made the Christmas Chocolate Cookies on page 206 twice, once on Christmas Eve, shortly before the yeast-free diet on January 4th. They really are easy to make and delicious to eat. I didn't have those holiday sprinkles, but ended up getting two containers of colored sugar sprinkles and mixing them--hey, it worked!

I also want a cup that says "Keep Calm And Carry On." I've got the sign posted on my desk at work.

Ms. Lawson's lecture stated that while she enjoys meeting fans and talking about food, it's simply out of a love of cooking and frequently, wanting to eat now. She doesn't like stressed out holidays, either--but who does? Read the book ahead of time, do a little planning, and you too can have a fantastic holiday that you can enjoy as well as your guests.

Now, is there any of that Choco-Chili left???

5-0 out of 5 stars A cook book for life - not just for Christmas.
Like all my Nigella books, I have read this word-for-word, cover-to-cover. (I find them so readable and enticing - rare among my cookery books. The only other cookery writer I've come across who inspires similar devouring is Nigel Slater).
There are some beautiful Christmas-centric pages but I find that much of this book is useful all year. I keep returning to certain favourites on a regular basis. Trouble is, the calorific options are excusable in the midst of festive excess but a recipe for unwanted curvature when eaten all year. My waistline rues the day I discovered the Girdlebuster Pie. (Unlike my family and friends, who love it!)
If you love food, Christmas and serving up sumptuous delights, I'd certainly recommend this book.
Another Nigella triumph.

3-0 out of 5 stars Gift Giving
I gave this as a gift to a friend whom I know is a fan of Nigella's, as am I. What surprised me about this title was how tacky the cover is (I ordered it on Amazon, then saw it in a store). Nigella is a wonderful writer and a good chef, and the other cookbooks of hers that I own (How to Eat, Domestic Goddess, Feast) are either designed in an understated fashion or very tasteful. I was a little embarrassed to have sent this. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars great Christmas ideas dishes for family and friends
My wife bought a copy several years ago and as a tradition picks a new dish to try each year. Each time it turns out to a big hit. After several movesthe book was starting to fall apart. My wife was thrilled when I bought a brand new copy for her. I am not a cook at all but I enjoyed reading some of the discriptions and seeing the beautiful illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mostly foolproof traditions...
Many of the recipes in the Christmas Memories Cookbook have become family Holiday traditions in our family.I'd pay twice the price of this book for the Cranberry Pear Relish recipe alone, though I now have to make four recipes' worth in order to have some left over for my own family, once we've given out jars as gifts to all the extended family and friends who beg for it every year! This book has all the recipes anyone could need for the entire Holiday season, including ideas for dealing with an overabundance of leftovers.

Most of the recipes are simple to make and easy to follow, though a few have more ingredients or steps than would be practical for most of us (there's an Egg Nog that looks as though it might be good, but takes several days to make, for instance). And at least one recipe that has what surely must be errors (a chocolate spice cookie that calls for 2 teaspoons of ground cloves... we did try it, just to see, and the aftertaste was horrid). But these are the exceptions to the rule of excellence in this book. And bless the publishers for making it with a spiral-type binding so that the pages lay flat.I've used Christmas Memories for more than the Holidays, so often in the last 15 years that I've worn through two of these books and am on my third copy.I should buy it in bulk; I've also given this book as Christmas presents (by request) to an aunt, a sister-in-law, two friends and my mother.

Because so many of the recipes are very simple, and are also good for entertaining, I'll be giving one to my son when he moves away; I wouldn't mind him cooking these recipes when he has his old parents over for dinner!

4-0 out of 5 stars Classic yet not overwhelming
My reason for attempting to purchase this incredible cookbook is because my old copy is so spattered and worn out that I am afraid of losing it to the elements.Being the mother of 4 young children, I find this book'smany simple but spectacular recipes (Phyllo Wrapped Tenderloin)to be anincredible inspiration; not only to my holiday cooking but to our everdaylives as well. The simplest additions, such as Madeira sauce, graviesand orange sauce for Duck are demystified, delicious and can usually bemade by what's available in your kitchen. No fail desserts includevarious and a myriad of cookies:cookie-cutter butter cookies(the kidslove this one!), pumpkin cookies, pfeffernuesse, anise cut-outs and manymore. Traditional favorites such as Buche de Noel, the much dreadedFruitcake, various Mousses and let's not forget the best EggNog I have evermade, all serve up as a refreshing yet familiar addition to our table. Finally, many of the appetizers are recognizable but are a wonderfulsurprise; like an old friend that you didn't expect to run into.SpinachSpread, Pates, Pesto Layered Torte and Baked Brie are just a few of the fewpopular items that can be made ahead and frozen. Also, a way to useHoliday leftovers is very cleverly presented; Turkey Enchiladas and TurkeyCroquettes with Cranberry are my families favorites. For those of uscreating our own traditions, this book is a terrific support and a treat aswell.I know that someday my children will phone me and ask for thatrecipe for "Stuffed Filet of Beef" or "Candy CaneCookies".In the author's own words, this book is "elegant butnot initmidating". ...
