5-0 out of 5 stars The story of a warrior who bridged two worlds
"Kamehameha: The Warrior King of Hawai'i" combines text by Susan Morrison with powerful artwork by Karen Kiefer.Together they tell the story of the ruler who forged the Hawaiian Islands into a single kingdom.A lot of information is packed into this slim book, which totals 85 plus xiv pages. The main text is divided up into fifteen short chapters, each of which features an illustration. The story spans all of Kamehameha's life, from birth to death; Morrison writes about his childhood, military campaigns, religious beliefs and activities, family life, political maneuvers, and encounters with Europeans.Particularly fascinating is Kamehameha's relationship with George Vancouver, a British seaman and explorer.

The main text and illustrations are complemented by many interesting supplemental features: a map of the Hawaiian Islands; an afterword that discusses Kamehameha's legacy; explanatory end notes about various aspects of his life; English and Hawaiian language versions of a chant about his birth, with an explanatory note; a chronology of important dates in his life; a glossary of terms and proper names that are relevant to his life; and a comprehensive bibliography. These supplemental features offer a lot of information for readers who might be interested in doing further research about Kamehameha.

Kamehameha truly lived an epic life, and Morrison and Kiefer have created a fascinating account of his journey. This is a coming-of-age story, a story of war and warriorship, a family drama, and a political saga. It's also a story about contact between different cultures (European and Hawaiian) and how new technology impacts one of these cultures. The portrait of Kamehameha is ultimately that of a visionary leader who aspires to bridge two worlds, both culturally and politically. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
Teaching Mikadoism is a dynamic and nuanced look at the Japanese language school controversy that originated in the Territory of Hawaii in 1919. At the time, ninety-eight percent of Hawaii’s Japanese American children attended Japanese language schools. Sugar plantation managers endorsed these schools, but after witnessing the assertive role of the Japanese in the 1920 labor strike, they joined public school educators and the Office of Naval Intelligence in labeling them anti-American and urged their suppression. Thus the "Japanese language school problem" became a means of controlling Hawaii’s largest ethnic group. The debate quickly surfaced in California and Washington, where powerful activists sought to curb Japanese immigration and economic advancement. Language schools were accused of indoctrinating Mikadoism to Japanese American children as part of Japan’s plan to colonize the United States.

Previously unexamined archival documents and oral history interviews highlight Japanese immigrants’ resistance and their efforts to foster traditional Japanese values in their American children. They also reveal complex fissures of class and religion within the Japanese communities themselves: The language school debate in Hawaii originated with the rivalry between elite Christian assimilationists who opposed such schools and Buddhist plantation laborers who strongly supported them. A comparative analysis of the Japanese communities in Hawaii, California, and Washington presents a clear picture of what historian Yuji Ichioka called the "distinctive histories" as well as the shared experiences of Japanese Americans. Within this framework, the history of the Japanese language school is central to the Japanese American struggle to secure fundamental rights in the United States.

Eight decades later, the Japanese language school debate remains relevant in the context of ethnic diversity in education today. Teaching Mikadoism! shifts the focus of research on Japanese language schools from an institutional perspective to a more layered approach that provides a deeper historical background to civil rights issues in a multicultural America. ... Product Description
Electronic Literacies is an insightful study of the challenges and contradictions that arise as culturally and linguistically diverse learners engage in new language and literacy practices in online environments.

The role of the Internet in changing literacy and education has been a topic of much speculation, but very little concrete research. This book is one of the first attempts to document the role of the Internet and other new digital technologies in the development of language and literacy. Warschauer looks at how the nature of reading and writing is changing, and how those changes are being addressed in the classroom. His focus is on the experiences of culturally and linguistically diverse learners who are at special risk of being marginalized from the information society.

Based on a two-year ethnographic study of the uses of the Internet in four language and writing classrooms in the state of Hawai'i--a Hawaiian language class of Native Hawaiian students seeking to revitalize their language and culture; an ESL class of students from Pacific Island and Latin American countries; an ESL class of students from Asian countries; and an English composition class of working-class students from diverse ethnic backgrounds--the book includes data from interviews with students and teachers, classroom observations, and analysis of student texts. This rich ethnographic data is combined with theories from a broad range of disciplines to develop conclusions about the relationship of technology to language, literacy, education, and culture. Central to Warschauer's discussion and conclusions is how contradictions of language, culture, and class affect the impact of Internet-based education. While Hawai'i is a special place, the issues confronted here are similar in many ways to those that exist throughout the United States and many other countries: How to provide culturally and linguistically diverse students traditionally on the educational and technological marginswith the literacies they need to fully participate in public, community, and economic life in the 21st century.

Product Description
Mary Richards, in this biography, provides a warm, revealing picture of a highly capable, dedicated man who got Hawaii statehood off to an admirable start. There is a strongly personal flavor to her account, a detailed mosaic of Quinn’s recorded remembrances, commentaries by a host of political participants and outside observers, editorials and news stories. Mrs. Quinn—Nancy to so many—proves herself a loving and insightful wife and mother, a gracious First Lady who calmly maneuvered an impossible official and domestic schedule in support of the governor. Readers who were here at the time will relive an extraordinary slice of Island history. Those who came or grew up since will get an inside view of Hawaii keeping a date with destiny. ... Read more

Product Description
Post-secondary education is a massive globalizing industry with a potential for growth that cannot be overestimated. By 2010 there will be 100 million people in the world, all fully qualified to proceed from secondary to tertiary education, but there will be no room left on any campus. A distinguished panel of scholars and educational administrators from the Americas, Asia, Europe, and the Pacific was asked to speak on the complexities of globalized higher education from their positions of concern and expertise and then engage in a dialogue. The result is this timely and important work.

Throughout, contributors address a number of difficult questions: Do the processes of global capitalism fundamentally challenge the inherited forms of the University? How should the use and nature of markets be conceived and how are they related? What is the appropriate pedagogy for the new technologies and what are its limits? If growing participation in higher education is an over-riding good, should this be conceived in terms of fulfilling human capacities, realizing national goals, or attaining employment skills? Questions regarding the goals of higher education and their accomplishment lead to deeper ones concerning the very idea of knowledge and the distinction--increasingly difficult to draw--between knowing in the theoretical mode, knowing in the practical mode, knowing as an essentially reflective process, and, finally, the view that there are alternative ways of knowing.

This volume aims to energize readers into rethinking higher education. It succeeds by dealing thoughtfully and provocatively with pertinent issues that cut across and transcend national boundaries as well as very different points of view. ... Read more

In this exacting and insightful examination of the crisisin Cambodian education, David M. Ayres challenges the widespreadbelief that the key to Cambodia's future development and prosperitylies in overcoming the dreadful legacy of the Khmer Rouge. He seeksto explain why Cambodia has struggled with an educational crisis formore than four decades (including the years before the Khmer Rougecame to power in 1975) and thus casts the net of his analysis wellbeyond Pol Pot and his accomplices.Drawing on an extensive range ofsources, Ayres clearly shows that Cambodia's educational dilemma--thedisparity between the education system and the economic, political, and cultural environments, which it should serve--can be explained bysetting education within its historical and cultural contexts. ... Product Description
Cram schools (in Japanese called juku) are often mentioned in passing as a phenomenon functioning mainly to exacerbate competition and pressure on children, but no thorough study has been carried out of their function and types. It is the author's intention to contribute to a more nuanced understanding of this feature of education, which is not only important in Japan but increasingly so in other parts of the world as well. Her major conclusion is that a clear distinction between different types of juku is necessary so that their function as well as merits and demerits can be properly assessed. Although juku have often been decried as enhancing competition in the Japanese system of schooling, this study also provides evidence that without them, the regular system of schooling would not be able to function. In the modern polarized society that is Japan, juku are taking on a variety of new functions that this study aims to uncover. Part one sets the scene and presents a typology of juku. There follows a general description of the actors, juku, as well as descriptions of existing juku from the identified categories based on personal interviews. The final part discusses implications of the existence of juku in terms of political measures, their relation to particular new features of Japanese education (e.g. the 5-day school week) and the expenses and gains related to the juku. ...
