Maui Guide
Greatmap ofhighlighted areas and pts to see. Just returned from a trip and the map is accurate,to scale and alerted us to a couple of interior island and coastal sights we would have missed with the conventionaltourist maps - well worth the price and the vendor shipped it in two days toRhode Island!

How could it cost $99 Dollars???

Told by a resident to get this map, excellent purchase.
There are plenty of maps out there, this is the one my friend told me to get, he lives on Maui.My other friend and I planned to go biking on the Hana Highway, this map has lots of ideas for side trips, and close-up views of popular areas.Much more detail than the freebies at the tourist stops, up-to-date, colorful, easy to read, especially the topographical reference.

Good for long-term visits
A detailed map that we didn't use once during our visit.However, I suspect that if we lived on Maui or our stay was longer than 9 days, we may have used it to poke around into the back waters of Maui.For a short term stay, it's overkill.

Great alongside travel guides
Used this map on our last two trips and found it to be a useful tool alongside our travel guides. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because the map can be somewhat "busy." A bit lacking
Ehh, it's a map.Not a very thorough map.There has got to be a better map out there.This level of detail you could probably print straight from the internet.Not worth the money.

We just cruised the Hawaiian Islands with Holand America line
We just took a cruise around the Hawaiian Islands on the Holand America cruise line. We saved sooo much many thanks to this book! Instead of spending lots on the excursions, (Such as Pearl Harbor, Volcanos National Park, Snorkling), we just rented a car and got to see a whole lot more than we would have if we had signed up for just one excursion. Plus, as the bookwill tell you, a lot of the excursions that you pay $100 (or more) for are actually free (or at least half that price). Thanks to this book, our family made the most of our time on the Islands. I highly recommend this book for anyone visitting any of the Islands!

Great Concise Summary for Hawaii Cruisers
Thousands of people cruise around the Hawaiian Islands every week. Anne Vipond speaks directly to this group of visitors, explaining how to get the best experience out of your Hawaiian cruise vacation.

The book begins with a very nice reference area helping you understand the basics of a cruise ship and the background of the culture and history of Hawaii. Both of these are things you might normally overlook in a Hawaii travel book - but both are really important to helping you really enjoy your vacation by cruise. The more you are prepared for how a cruise ship works - and the more you understand the background of the peoples and landscapes of Hawaii - the more meaningful your trip is.

The book goes island by island, allowing you to quickly page to whichever island you're interested in and scan through the attractions. That way you can bring the book with you on the ship, bookmark whichever island is coming up next, and scan to see what you should watch out for. There are nice color photos so you can see exactly what the lava tubes look like, what the sea arch looks like, and so on. As I visited the locations, I was impressed that the book did a great job of showing me exactly what to watch for.

The book keeps a variety of visitors in mind. It talks about which golf courses are nearby, what hiking trails are available, what the beaches are like. It indicates when you should rent a car in advance and when shuttles are available.

There is a very nice pull-out map that has an overview of Hawaii on one side, and up close detailed maps on the other side of the main islands and locations. The book has even more detailed maps of specific areas, like Volcano National Park on the Big Island.

The book is definitely not as bulky as some other Hawaii books out there - but I found this a good thing. This was something I could easily carry with me and thumb through to figure out what seemed most interesting. Then if I wanted really in depth information about one detail, I could go to my specific book to get all the full information. For example, I have the Big Island Revealed which is an entire book just on the "Big Island" of Hawaii since I really wanted to explore there. But I used this book as a guide to figure out which attractions I wanted to see, and then went to the Revealed book to get the mile marker and location and other details.

The best walks on all the islands

Hawaii.A Walker's Guide (2nd Edition) by Rod Smith
I read the previous review by Marty Roth and have to agree totally. I don't think the author has tried using his directions in Hawaii.

I have been all over the island hiking.The book was helpful in so much asmentioning where to hike but the directions were not much help at all.

Not so practical guide...
I used this book extensively in April 2000 while hiking on the island of Oahu.

First the good news -- the guide was invaluable in mentioning hikes and walks on parts of the island that even the locals didn't seem to knowabout. I saw more of the hidden and beautiful Oahu than most tourists everget to see, even if they join one of the Eco-tours.

The other news isthat there are some basic omissions in the guide that make it very hard torecommend.

1. There are few detailed maps of any kind indicating thetrailhead locations or the trails themselves, and no indications oftopography. Trailhead directions often give "street names" butthey are just as often non-existent or vague e.g. "Kuaokala Road in amilitary district". All the trails I walked were totally unmarked anddifficult to gauge without a map.

2. It mentions that "permitsrequired" for some trails but does not tell you where or how to applyfor them.

I wrote to Hunter Publishing asking for an explanation of theseomissions from the author, Rod Lewis, and after two months and severalfollow-up requests for comment, I never received a reply.

I looked onamazon.com and Rod Smith is listed as author or editor for a number ofother books, none related to hiking or Hawaii, although it appears theremay two Rod Smiths. My guess, based on his non-response, is that the authorcatalogued the trails from other sources (unmentioned) and never did theon-ground verification of trailhead locations or actually walked the trailshimself. Perhaps he relied on others for the verification, but overall Ifound it lacking, and not the "practical guide" he purports it tobe.

In sum, if you are looking for a "practical" walking guidefor Hawaii, look elsewhere. ... Read more
