Published to coincide with the centenary of his birth, this is an examination of the personal concerns which Howard Hawks brought to his films, and which enabled him to stamp his distinctive signature on what once appeared to be a random assortment of genre pieces. Hawks's discussion of his working methods in this frequently irreverent book represents a master class in the practical art of film direction. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Interview Books
Even if you have seen Hawks interviewed on "The Men Who Made the Movies," or have read other interviews with him, HAWKS ON HAWKS is still quite interesting and enjoyable. If you need to understand the essence of Hawks quickly, this is the book to read.We get Hawks' account of his career, the moguls he dealt with, the stars he liked and disliked, his thoughts about movies after he became inactive.Todd McCarthy's Howard Hawks The Gray Fox of Hollywood is a more thorough portrait of the man, and it is good to check Hawks' stories against the research in that book, but HAWKS ON HAWKS is still very charming.

5-0 out of 5 stars A True Master
Overlooked for years by the Hollywood establishment, today Howard Hawks is remembered as one of the cinema's greatest artists. The candid interviews contained in this book are funny, insightful and just plain enjoyable. Hawks discusses Bogart, Wayne, Bacall, and numerous other actors he workedwith during his career, as well as commenting on his most famous filmsincluding Red River, The Big Sleep, and Bringing Up Baby.Especiallynoteworthy are the sections where he discusses the "HawksianWoman", the Western and his fellow director and friend John Ford.Amust for Hawks' fans. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars This is a terrible edition
I teach college history. This is a great book, but this particular edition is awful, cheap, typo-ridden, terrible.Students complained. We will never use it again.Be sure you get a real edition from a real publisher. Uch.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Victim and Courageous Adversary.
I live in the Black Hawk area also, and everytime I read of this man, I get more respect for his cause. His tribe was cheated out of vast lands for a pittance. When he protested this cheating, he was told to move his ancestral village and go across the river. When he protested this, the government moved troops against him. When he wanted to surrender, they shot his braves who waved a white flag.Who cheated who here.It seems that the Indians were cheated of their inheritance and could not even protest this to the government. He was brave in battle and surrendered when he had to due to the murder of his women and children. He was taken captive and shown to gawking Easterners. He put a brave face on everything and accepted his lot.No wonder the military named its impressive helicopter after him.

This is a nice read on a brave and courageous man.Even though he was defeated, he never lost his pride in his ancestry.A true warrior and hero for everyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Autobiography of Black Hawk
The last "Indian War" in Illinois occurred in 1832 when a small band of Sauk refused under the leadership of the warrior Black Hawk to abandon their village (located under a subdivision of the present Rock Island, Illinois). They wandered up the Rock River, fighting contingents of regular army and state militia (a young Abraham Lincoln served several stints as a volunteer but saw no fighting; a young Jefferson Davis played a role in the last phases of the conflict), slipped into Wisconsin, and were finally defeated in a brutal massacre of men, women, and children on the banks of the Mississippi. Black Hawk surrendered and was taken East to meet President Jackson. After a short term in confinement, he and his companions were taken on a tour of the East Coast, an effort by the United States government to impress him with the young nation's overwhelming superiority in numbers and technology. The plan worked, by Black Hawk's own testimony, and when he returned to the Midwest he lived out the rest of his life in obscurity in a village in Iowa. He never saw his home again.
The origins of the autobiography published under Black Hawk's name has generated controversy. It was dictated to a half Native American interpreter, Antoine Le Claire, who rendered it into English, then edited by an Illinois newspaperman named John B. Patterson, who put it into publishable form. Both men swore that the result was faithful to Black Hawk's words, but the skeptical reader may be permitted some doubt; the language is clearly that of the period (surely Patterson's work), and Black Hawk himself complains on at least one occasion that his interpreter's grasp of the Sauk language did not suffice to translate a flowery speech. So what we have here, while no doubt in general faithful to Black Hawk's intentions and life story, cannot be his ipsissima verba. (It is a pity, given these doubts, that the editor of the volume, who has otherwise done an admirable job of annotation and commentary, did not compare the language of the preface, which records Black Hawk's own Sauk, with that of the text as a whole.)
Despite these doubts, there can be no question that the Autobiography affords us an extraordinary opportunity to see the impact of midwestern expansion on the native population from their own point of view, and to obtain direct access -- even if it has been mediated somewhat for non-native consumption -- into the social world of a people soon to vanish. The war itself is somewhat of an anti-climax, and deeply sad, doomed as resistance clearly was from the beginning. It is rather the self-presentation of a proud, successful Sauk warrior, endowed with considerable facilities of self-reflection and honesty, that make this book a treasure that every American should read.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Book for Anyone
As a college student from the blackhawk area, I found this book captivating.Really written for any age or education level, I think anyone and everyone should read it.A heroic story of a real man, the book is abeautiful journey through history. The story some details of Black Hawk'slife before the war and describes the events behind the wars and hisinterpretation of them well.I would recomend this to anyone from juniorhigh up and definatly anyone from Rock Island or the surrounding areas. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Review for Return to Hawk's Hill
Return to Hawk's Hill by Alan W. Eckert is one of my favorite books.I think this book can be read or listened to by all ages. The book tells the story through the eyes of the family, Ben and the villagers. While reading the book, you will find yourself comparing what they did in a certain situation with what you would have done. The main theme is the conflict of what people think of others when they act, talk and do things you find are strange.
The story begins with Ben's brother and sisters going home and thinking of what had happened before (read Incident at Hawk 's Hill to understand) when George Burton shows up.Ben feeling like an animal caught runs..., finds a boat..., is found by an Indian boy and brought back to the Indian boy's village, fills fear, lonely and then love.Return to Hawk's Hill is a book you can't stop reading until it's done.

4-0 out of 5 stars Return to Hawk's Hill
I chose to read this book....I was looking for a novel that seemed interesting.I also wanted to read a book with a different genre from most of the other books I've read...
The main character in this story is a young boy named Ben Mac Donald.Ben Mac Donald has two older sisters,... . and one older brother. Ben is the youngest of the four and also the quietest. He seems to be on the reserved side and it seems like he enjoys being home alone, and keeping to himself.Ben is also fascinated with nature, and loves to go and frolic with the wildlife on the prairie. At one point in the story, Ben even stays with a mother badger in her den...
I really enjoyed this book and I found it very interesting.I love the adventures that he goes on.Sometimes the adventures he goes on are to save the lives of others, other times it's to get away with his own.I give this book a score of 4+/5-; because the book just pulled me in I couldn't put it down.I really enjoy adventures both in books and in real life, and this book had plenty of adventures to keep me reading.I hope to read the next volume of this book series titled Incident at Hawk's Hill and experience more heart racing adventures that Ben Mac Donald goes on.Hopefully, none too dangerous though.

5-0 out of 5 stars A GOOD BOOK!
This sequal to Incident at Hawk's Hill was a great book. It was nice to find out that Ben MacDonold did well in school. When the familie's adventure starts, they didn't know that it would lead to a friendship with indians. This book was full of incredible suspense and action. ... Read more

Product Description
Commemorating 100 years of powered flight, a novel of the two brothers who risked everything to win the race to the skies e know who invented the airplane: Wilbur and Orville Wright. Lost in history are the names of those who, in the closing years of the nineteenth century and the first years of the twentieth, shared that same passion: to develop the first powered aircraft. Some spent fortunes chasing that dream. Some spent their lives. Men like embittered Augustus Herring, who flew a heavier-than-air machine for several seconds in 1898, and who was not above sabotaging those who mocked him. And the pompous Samuel Langly of the Smith-sonian Institute; backed by the US War Depart-ment, he was believed to be the man most likely to achieve a viable flying machine. Even the legendary American scientist, Alexander Graham Bell, took up the chase. A man of solid practicality and a bishop of the United Brethren Church, Milton Wright did not want his two sons to die in a fool-headed flying machine. The Wright Brothers had a thriving bicycle shop business right there in Dayton, Ohio. He saw no reason for his sons to risk everything on an isolated, North Carolina beach, called Kitty Hawk. But it was in the tiny town of Kitty Hawk where the race to achieve the heavier-than-air flying machine would be won . . . or lost. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Masterful and illuminting!
I was captivated by Dawn over Kitty Hawk from start to finish. By using an artful combination of historical fact and novelized dialogue, Boyne illuminates the events surrounding man's invention of powered flight with an astonishing clarity. The remarkable genius of Wilbur and Orville Wright, the complex intellectual bond between them, plus the dominating influence of their father, Bishop Wright, is fully revealed and explained at last. With a cast of genuine characters--Augustus Herring, who claimed to have flown first, Samuel Langley, who failed despite government support, Alexander Graham Bell, who wanted to bring his inventive talents to the forefront of aviation, Glenn Curtiss, who wanted to turn aviation into a business, and Octave Chanute, who wanted to bring all of the disparate elements together--Boyne very successfully recreates one of the most compelling dramas of the last century. Anyone with the slightest interest in 20th centuty history ought to read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rummaging around pays off ..
While rummaging around a local Dollar General Store, I came across this book which, I am happy to say, I bought new for 75 cents. It sounded interesting and I took it home.I laid it down and looked at it for weeks ... then, one day, I took the journey.

"Dawn Over Kitty Hawk" is categorized as a novel. While I might concur that Walter J. Boyne took some liberties ..... I mean, what biographer doesn't?This book is much more a biography than a novel.

While reading I took the time to look up information about the Wright Brothers and the race to develop the first "controllable" power flying machine.Boyne is dead on with respect to his facts.

Boyne goes further in delving into the minds of Wilbur and Orville Wright than most Wright biographers have.

It is a fascinating and informative read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Flight
Dawn Over Kitty Hawk is a first class narrative history of the early years of flight, not only the Wright brothers, but skillfully weaving in the story of others. This is a first class story of the rivalry that existed as man tried to imitate birds and fly through the air with the greatest of ease. It is informative as well as entertaining.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ponder the oxymoron of historical fiction.
The Wright brothers are truly a remarkable story, they represent American ingenuity at its best.Lacking scientific education, unbacked by any government or corporate sponsorship, they conquered the "problem of flight" in only 5 years, mostly by using bicycle-shop practicality to surmount a huge number of daunting technical problems.

While this book is a fun read if you like to see the pompous and the devious outwitted by the humble and the forthright (who doesn't?), I have to say that historical fiction always leaves me with an empty feeling.Does the historical record really need the embellishment of conversations, thoughts, and situations that the author invented?Boyne's high view of the Wrights, and dim view of the competition, create a Disneyesque (Star Warsesque?) world in which every character is either good or evil. Most historians quickly realize that the real world is far more complex than that.

Anyway, the book is a good but not excellent read.I'm perplexed by the somewhat tangential sexual overtones (beginning on page 1), as if the editor told the author to "add sex into the novel in at least 5 places, so it will sell!"The dialogue is sometimes sublime, but often ridiculous. The author demonstrates his command of the aeronautics and engineering involved.Too bad he was somehow convinced that a novel, rather than a biography, would be a better way to go ...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Story, Well Told, About Aviation Heroes
Having written an historical novel myself ("Devil in the North Woods), I recognize the result of many long hours of research and the skill needed to bring history to life for the reader.

Walt Boyne has taken the well-known story of aviation icons, Orville and Wilbur Wright, and breathed life into what is all-too-often dry history. Quickly, the story carries you into their lives, thoughts, hopes and fears as these two amazing young men bucked the trends of conventional wisdom and the opinions of men allegedly possessing far more experience.

The result is the very human story of true genius at work. If their efforts and results were not documented facts, it would be hard to believe. With compassion and insight, Boyne has created a tour-de-force for all aviation and history fans! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ExcellentNarrative for Young Readers
This is a superb narrative on the Wright Brothers.Author Donald J. Sobol describes Orville and Wilbur as they strive to build the first motorized flying machine (gliders and balloons already existed).Readers see how the two brothers often struggled and failed, but never gave up.Imagine trying to invent a flying machine and discovering that the existing books on aeronautics are so flawed that you need to invent your own.The author includes some technical information on wing warp (discovered by accident) and other vital parts of flight.Readers see how the Wright Brothers' achievements came partly from useful allies like Oscar Chanute, in addition to their own considerable talent and determination. We also see the muted reaction to their success at flight in the press; few realizing that a milestone had been reached that would lead to rapid innovation and improvement.

Donald Sobol has an easy reading style, and he has many lessons here for young readers.I really enjoyed this book as a younger, not to mention the author's Encyclopedia Brown mysteries.

4-0 out of 5 stars Flying into the furture
Flying into the future with The Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk

Donald J. Sobol made a very exiting book about the Wright Brother's invention with the book "The Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk." This is a great biography that has Orville and Wilber Wrights' mess ups and what they had to go through to build the kind of machine that they did.
In The Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk Orville and Wilber Wright encounter many challenges when they are trying to build an airplane. By trying to get an object heavier than air into the sky they spend a lot of money and time that they don't have a lot of on something that they don't have to do and don't know too much about. (When the two brothers find out that the air tables are wrong that they have to change everything that they have accomplished on the glider has to be thrown away or rebuilt they don't quit.) And that's just the beginning of all the problems that they come across.
Another problem that they come across is when they're ready to get the machine up into the air they find out that they can't even buy an engine big enough for the size of the machine they have already built. So instead of quitting they make their own engine even though they hardly know anything about motors. Go and read The Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk if you want to find out if they every do make it up into the air.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good biography but technical
I use this biography in my fourth grade classroom. It does a good job of characterizing Orville and Wilbur Wright -- you get a true sense of their determination and perfectionism. However, some of the information is verytechnical which tends to confuse my children. In the end, my students havemixed feelings about the book - some enjoy it immensely while otherscomplain that it is hard to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Regency
The Marsh Hawk (Leisure Historical Romance)

Dawn MacTavish takes our breath away when events take an unexpected turn. Set to become betrothed to a man she doesn't love, Jenna instead finds herself betrothed to the Earl of Kevernwood, Simon Rutherford.

But Jenna has a secret, as does Simon. Secrets that threaten to destroy their newfound happiness.

Dawn MacTavish's captivating writing held me spellbound, and her characters - both main and secondary - were characters to fall in love with. I particularly loved Robert Nast and hope MacTavish pens his own story!

The hero and heroine fall in love without knowing anything about each other. What happens after the wedding when the truth of their secrets is revealed?

The book is a true page turner, and you won't want the story to end. Kudos to the author for a job well done!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
The Marsh Hawk is a wonderfully written romance with an intelligent heroine and sigh-worthy hero, not to mention secondary characters you come to care about. Lord Kevernwood marries Lady Jenna after a very brief acquaintance, this against the advice of his oldest friend, the Vicar Robert Nast. Robert cautions them to wait and get to know one another before they wed, but to no avail. Both deeply in love with each other, they wed. But it's after the wedding night that Jenna suspects her husband might be The Marsh Hawk, the highwayman who murdered her father. When she sees her suspicions proved true, she follows the only path she believes open to her, returning home to her mother. She leaves posthaste.
Lord Kevernwood is devastated his bride could believe him a murderer. Nor does he know if she'll reveal what she knows to the authorities. He fetches her back to his home, but not before Jenna makes another startling discovery.
They agree to an arrangement, to live together and give the impression of a happy couple until after the come-out ball for his niece. Both love the other, but believe too much distrust, too many lies prevent the marriage from working.Lady Jersey makes an appearance, learns a shocking truth or two, and stays on, determined to find out the veracity behind some outrageous accusations. I say no more, but leave it to the reader to learn what happens to The Marsh Hawk. You won't be disappointed in the twists and turns of the story. I loved this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I bought this book after reading the good reviews I saw here.I must say I was disappointed. To me the characters were not likeable. They fall "in love" with no more than 5 words between them. There is no reason in the book for us to believe that they are in love other than the author telling us so.They proceed to marry, not confide in each other and pretty much make each other miserable. She won't trust and he won't let go of his pride until, of course, the very end where they live happily ever after. Not a very enjoyable read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, multilayered tale...
How far would you go for revenge?

Lady Jenna Hollingsworth is still devastated by the death of her father at the hands of a highwayman.Otherwise, she never would have agreed to a marriage with the ill-mannered Viscount Rupert Marner.Unfortunately, she needs the protection his title will offer her if ever her night of revenge is uncovered, a night she shot the highwayman, THE MARSH HAWK.Events take an unexpected turn, and Jenna instead finds herself betrothed to the Earl of Kevernwood, Simon Rutherford.Simon has secrets as well, secrets that could destroy the newfound happiness he has found with Jenna. Will Rupert let her go or will he seek revenge for being jilted? What happens when the secrets of both Jenna and Simon are revealed?

Dawn MacTavish's lyrical writing style drew me into this tale but it was her vivid characters who kept me intrigued! The multidimensional characters are a breath of fresh air as they spring to life from the pages of this magnificent story.Who can't help but sympathize with Jenna's pain and anger over her father's death? Her desire for revenge is more than understandable.Simon's own angst is more complex, as he is caught in a web of his own making.

The tension is beautifully done, as Jenna and Simon fell headlong in love without learning each others secrets.Meanwhile, Vicar Robert Nast is caught in the middle between Simon and Jenna, between his duties as a vicar and his loyalty as a friend.THE MARSH HAWK is a multilayered story, as Robert also plays an integral part in the storyline. The anticipation and intrigue build up as each page is turned, as one wonders just how all will be resolved.

Dawn MacTavish does a splendid job at really bringing this era to life.Set in the early 1800s, THE MARSH HAWK exquisitely conveys the intricate details and nuances that make the actions of the characters believable. The emotional depth of this beautiful tale is simply astounding as I was swept away to a time long past, courtesy of Dawn MacTavish's elegant and graceful style.

Take one devilshly handsome highwayman, add one beautiful lady on a crusade, along with a dash of skullduggery, and you have one terrific Regency-set story that breaks the mold.

Who knew Jenna Hollingsworth's night of revenge, resulting in the wounding of the Marsh Hawk, would mark the beginning of a new life filled with romance, passion, and intrigue.Little did Simon Rutherford, Earl of Kevernwood, know that once he laid eyes on Jenna, he would fall crazy in love. Can Simon's love carry them through Jenna's suspicions concerning his character? Will Jenna's need for revenge spoil a beautiful romance?

The Marsh Hawk is a smooth, compelling read that takes you away to another time and place. What a page-turner!Dawn Thompson writing as Dawn MacTavish certainly proved that she can hold her audience captive with straight historical romances just as well as she can with her award-winning paranormal books. You can't go wrong with this book!

The art of Southern storytelling lives in William Wallis' Hawk. With touching memories and haunting scenes, the reader is drawn into the basic courage of young Will's life.Memorable characters such as Alma, a kind and patient nurse who teaches Will to read; Ruth, Will's fragile mother who teaches him a love for classical music and singing; Tyree, his gentle neighbor who pays attention to him; and his complexly cruel father, Ray, shape this narrative as well as our protagonist's life.Throughout the story the image of a wild hawk emerges to carry Will and the reader through to a sense of freedom.Though each of our own memories are personal, shared they become universal. In this homage of a young boy trying to make sense of his life, we all finally appreciate beauty and truth.

We feel the stinging pain of the injured eye, the poignant implications of memories lost, the depth of an anger that resists release. In the family's meadow, in the milk barn with Sister, the library stacks with Miss Jones, the music captures us, the poetry engages us, the honesty speaks to us. William Wallis has penned moments of sadness, fear, joy and the simple but endearing love that bonds the family and captures our hearts. ... Read more

Great read.Picked right up where The Potato Factory left off.Looking forward to reading Solomons Song!

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down
When I received my used book in the mail, Tommo and Hawk, I wanted to start reading it right away BUT there was a large note written inside the front cover from the previous owner -'Do not read this book until you have completed The Potato Factory'!!I am SO glad that I listened and waited for a week until my copy of the Potato Factory arrived - Bryce Courtenay is now one of my very favorite authors - he has a wonderful way of capturing and keeping the readers attention - I couldn't put the book down til the last page - my reading light stayed on many nights til 3 am when I had told myself 'just one more page' !!Now I'm ready for Solomon's Song!

4-0 out of 5 stars TOMMO AND HAWK
THE SEQUEL TO THE POTATO FACTORY. REALISTIC LIFE STRUGGLES AGAINST PREJUDICE AND THE WILL AND TENACITY TO OVERCOME. COURTENAY IS ALWAYS INSPIRING.

5-0 out of 5 stars A New Favorite from a Favorite Author
Bryce Courtenay has been on my list of favorite authors since I read "The Power of One."He does not disappoint in "Tommo and Hawk."

The story of twin boys in Australia, this book enthralls with rich characters and a setting that draws the reader into the early days of European settlement of Australia and New Zealand. The story is filled with historical information, but it is the character development of the twins, their mother, and Maggie Pye that impels the reader through "just one more chapter."

Though not as optomistic in tone or outcome as "The Power of One," "Tommo and Hawk" is even more fascinating. The twins, opposites in every respect except their love for each other, survive misadventures and struggle through until an inevitable, but sorrow-filled ending.

Captivating reading -- five stars! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Execellent Series
I loved this series. I stumbled upon one of the books at my local drug store. I immediately began finding the other books. It took me a few weeks to get them all. I would recommend all of them. Good story line that was captivating. Not much sex, but good character's.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hawk's Pursuit
I enjoyed reading the third book of the Hawk family.I wish that there was a little more of the family reunion with the three siblings.I plan on passing on my books to friends to read all four books for them to enjoy.

4-0 out of 5 stars I have one minor complaint about this book
I really enjoyed this book. But I do have a small complaint and it has to do with proof-reading. I'm reading the series in order and one right after the other. But I was confused when I started reading this book. I knew it was the third and took place after the first two. But they dated the book as taking place the year before. So at first I thought maybe they were back tracking. But then I realized it was a typo.I'm glad they finally got 2 of the siblings together. I was really disappointed that Whit and Laura Ann (Elizabeth) did not connect in the 2nd book.I wish they would smarten Chantelle up a bit.I know she's keeping Angie around to keep an eye on her. But she doesn't seem to put much effort in keeping Angie from causing trouble. But still I'm looking forward to reading the 4th and final book.

5-0 out of 5 stars #3 OF HAWK CREST SAGA - ANOTHER STUBBORN FEMALE
For an eighteen year old J.L. seems to think she can hold her own against a man. They can't seem to think that someone with a little more experience may be just as smart as they think they are.
Did she think she could stop the Yankee that accosted her?

Galveston was still a man's world and not all that civilized.
Colonel Clay Madison was doing his darndest to keep the explosive tempers of the residents under control.J.L. Rebel triggers off the tempers of the men who would like to see the blue coats gone.

We meet once again, Chantalle Beauchamp, the madam of the ritzy bordello who seems to be piecing together the clues to the Hawk family.
Her girl, Angie is still up to no good and in colusion with Simon.Simon in chasing Grace Marsh lost his chance to connect with J.L. Hawk.
Had to laugh when his right hand man, Bruce drew his attention to the marriage of J.L. Hawk to Col. Madison.

The Yankee that accosted her meant to do more than frighten her.The idiot didn't realize she had to fear this man.She had run into the beginnings of a serial killer and didn't have a very good sense of self preservation. She took out her frustration and anger on Colonel Madison.

She didn't even want to accept his protection when another girl's death was connected to Goldie. In interviewing Chantalle she stumbled onto the possibility of a serial killer. She did have the sense to inform Madison.
He figured she was just out for a story for the newspaper.

Finally she gets to meet up with her brother, Whit.At Last.

Over all excellent plot - silly females - the men??? - Gault is hanging in there - When is Angie going to get it?Who is Chantalle? Will Harold Hawk's journal come to light?

Definitely Recommend --M [had to have a bit of pre-marital sex - PMS] most women were not that loose.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read!
This was an excellent story in and of itself, but as a series it was wonderful. The story and people are great! Read all 4 books in 2 days.Could not put them down.I am becomeing an avid fan of O'Banyon's western historical romances!Cannot wait to see what comes out next! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Son of Hawk is a fast-paced romp read!
This trilogy was a fine read, chock full of high adventure and a hero that's fun to read about.I'm not even a western reader myself, but this trilogy kept me interested and reading on.
And that's saying something!
If you like your westerns full of triumphs and trajedies - then this one's for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars WEST WRITES LIKE I THINK IT WAS!!!!
This is the third book in the series about Trace McCall, known by the Indians as Mountain Hawk. Trace had a son by a Shoshoni young woman about twelve years ago. He is unaware of the boy whose name is White Eagle. After White Eagle's tribe is wipped out by the Sioux he looks for Trace. White Eagle has vowed to kill Booth Dalton, the white man who was with the Sioux when his mother was killed. White Eagle is captured by Booth Dalton and Trace McCall is after them. The book will hold your attention. If you like books about mountain men and Indians of that time you will enjoy this. I think this is the best one of the three in the series. If you can read them in order it will be best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring...Realistic, for its Time
Charles G. West brings to life the type of real people that made our history. From the realationships with each other to the tension that comes with being in a tight spot at the wrong time.
It sometimes makes me wonder what kind of a person I would make in similar situations. Or how our fore-fathers handled life as it was dealt them on a daily basis in similar times.

As in this series of the Mountian Hawk I look forward to reading more about the man and where he came from. Which is why I searched for and look forward to reading the preseding books. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Red-tailed Hawk, As Told By An Expert In the Field
This well written book gives anyone interested in raptors, a detailed description of the Red-Tailed Hawk. Dr. Preston is the founding curator of the Draper Museum of Natural History at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyoming, where his primary research focuses on raptor ecology and the management of wildlife in and around the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. In this book he describes many of the behaviors of the Red-tailed Hawk, including choosing a mate, nesting, brooding, communication with each other, hunting, and territory protection behaviors. The book is illustrated with photos from a number of different nature photographers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for specific species information.
This book is an excellent overview of the Red-tailed Hawk, giving the already experienced raptor-watcher and fledgling birdwatcher alike a very thorough description of this Hawk's lifestyle.Recommended.Some of thephotographs seemed less than ideal for book publication, however.

4-0 out of 5 stars serendipidous find: a must for all young birders
My original introduction to this book came from my five year old grandson Aaron who brought it home from the public library for me to read to him.I believe he was attracted to the picture of the hawk on the cover. It is a bird he easily recognized from his observations around his home.He lived with his family in an open area close to the San Pedro River Riperian Area, and the family has always been involved with the out-of-doors and the flora and fauna around them. The story involves a small boy who has recently moved to a new home and is feeling a bit lost and lonely. He spends days alone observing hawks flying above him as he lies on his back on hawk hill.He eventually observes and then meets a woman who takes in and mends injured birds. She teaches the boy to care for these birds and then offers him a strong lesson about letting wild things return to the wild after being healed.Aaron found a kinship with the boy in the book because he and his family were about to relocate to a new home. That coupled with his interest in birds and wildlife made this book particularly meaningful for him.Two pages of illustrated raptor identification at the back of the book are well suited for a young mind's understanding, and he insisted that I read all of it while he examined the pictures closely. The illustrations are well executed and can serve to identify birds in the wild.

I bought this book because Aaron is now beginning to read for himself, and I believe he will return to it often.I highly recommend this for children who are interested in bird watching (I believe a second grader can read this by him or herself) as well as for parents who hope to interest their children in learning about the wild birds around them. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Blood & Sex
Seven drunk nurses are attacked by seven twelve year olds on customized Schwinns. A young man covers a nude female corpse with hundred dollar bills and plays Rolling Stones songs to her just before he burns her in the bathtub. A bored guitarist reaches orgasm with his Gibson. A traveler is tormented by a dead raven's feather. These and other stories and poetry make up playwright Sam Shepard's first foray into fiction and poetry (originally published in 1973). His major themes here include blood and violence, sex, love, and America. For any Shepard fan, this is a must-read. Shepard's images of America--the dry, flat desert, the endless highway, the seedy motel--are so dead-on that we are right there with his characters, looking over their shoulders as they commit sins and/or try to find some good in this world. Read it with Shepard's CRUISING PARADISE and MOTEL CHRONICLES.

5-0 out of 5 stars A brilliant and engaging history
Hawk Mountain is my favorite place in the entire world, and when I received my copy of this book, I immediately started reading.I couldn't put it down. The narrative is spellbinding; among his other many talents, Broun was an excellent writer. The photographs add an extra dimension to the story of the sanctuary and make the manuscript come alive. It was especially meaningful to me as someone who is so familiar with and fond of the place, but even someone who has never seen it can't fail to be moved by the passion and the conviction with which the sanctuary founders moved forward with their vision.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Medical Surgical Nursing: Clinical Management for Positive Outcomes 7th Edition Black/Luckmann
My book arrived before the stated time which was excellent.I had a problem with one of the books as it was not what I ordered so I contacted the seller pmpfabo777 who was not helpful at all and they just brushed me off. What goes around comes around. The books I got from the other sellers were exactly what I ordered and I am satisfied with my purchases from them.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not get this book if you want to learn anything about nursing
This book has many problems, but the biggest one is organization.Rather than explaining each topic individually in a systematic manner, they will take an entire topic such as "renal" and then jump around from topic to topic within renal in different sections. For instance, they will explain "pathophysiology" and include both acute renal failure and then explain chronic. Then they will go to "pharmacology" and explain acute and then chronic. Then they will go to "nursing diagnoses" for both of them together, rather than explain each topic individually. The result is that someone who is not familiar with the subject (i.e., most beginning rn students) will become very mixed up a confused, as well as not having a clear idea about what information is important vs what is "fluff".

The online program that comes with the book is just awful.Technical support will keep you on the phone for hours and there are many problems to call them about. The test keys are wrong, case studies fail to appear, students would get locked out periodically for no reason. All of which can be very frustrating especially if you are doing the assignments for a grade.

I would never recommend to any one in any circumstances to buy this book.In fact I think reading it at all will only serve to confuse you even more.

3-0 out of 5 stars Medical-Surgical Nursing Review
This book came delivered to me as one volume. It is being sold in my university's book store as two separate volumes because it is so large. I was a little disappointedwhen I received it as one book because I feel it is going to break easier. Just be aware that this book is over 2000 pages long and the spine is not strong enough to hold them all in place. Otherwise, the book is great.

4-0 out of 5 stars great book
I enjoyed reading this book, especially since it has 3 or 4 individual stories in this one book. All were well written and enjoyable to read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hawk's Way "Whitelaw Brats"...The Next Generation...#'s 6,7, and 8In The series
If you've been following the romantic/modern day westerns in the Hawk's Way series by Joan Johnston, these three novellas are #'s 6, 7, and 8 in the series. "The Unforgiving Bride", "The Headstrong Bride", and "The Disobedient Bride" follow the stories of Garth and Candy Whitelaw's children, known as 'The Whitelaw Brats", now all in their 30's. Although, the stories all seem to follow a theme; marrying for the wrong reasons, and are somewhat formulized, Johnston manages to keep each story enjoyable, fresh, and the characters unique from the others. Also, these stories stand on their own from the last generation of Whitelaws in the first 5 books, but it is nice to know the background(which we get a little of in these stories as well). The first 5 if you are interested in all the Hawk's Way stories(they are all a pretty nice way to get lost for a while) are:"Honey and the Hired Hand","The Rancher and The Runaway Bride",""the Cowboy and the Princess","The Wrangler and The Rich Girl"(this one is the story of the parents of the Hawk's way Brides trio), and 'The Cowboy Takes a Wife".

So here are the next generation of Whitelaw love stories:

"The Unforgiving Bride"...This is middle sibling Falcon's story. Falcon runs into an old high school chum, Grant Ainsworth, on the street. Grant has with him, the most beautiful woman Falcon has ever laid his eyes on,Mara, his wife. He has thoughts about this woman that he shouldn't have about his friend's wife, but she has an effect on him, no other woman has ever had. They also have with them their little daughter Susannah. They are the picture of the perfect family. But all is not as it seems. Grant is a bit of a playboy and also an alcoholic., When the two friends meet for a drink, Falcon leaves Grant who wants to drink on his own. When tragedy strikes, Mara blames Falcon. She has as deep hatred for him. But in a twist of fate, when Susannah is diagnosed with a potentially fatal disease, she must turn to Falcon for help. His money can help the child. Falcon feeling guilty about the circumstances agrees reluctantly to help. But of course, the tension between the two turns to passion, and letting go of the past is not an easy thing to do. Their marriage may be doomed, and Susannah's life is what matters most.

"The Headstrong Bride"...Youngest sister Callen Whitelaw has been engaged twice. Both times to men her father disapproved of. Each time, she was determined to marry despite her father's disapproval, but both times, she came around and saw the men for who they really were and broke it off. But this third time, really has Garth, and her older brother Zach protesting. She is about to marry her father's enemy, Sam Longstreet. Sam is the most caring man she has ever met and is determined to make her life with him, despite her family's possible estrangement. Sam Whitelaw, may not be the man she thinks he is either, and has ulterior motives for his new bride..revenge on the Whitelaws! The passion between them is great, but Sam can never say 'I love You", knowing that when his mission is accomplished he will dump her. Can Callen tame this lone stallion, and will the Whitelaws and Longstreets be able to live in peace?

"The Disobedient Bride"...Although I think the term "disobedient bride", does not quite fit the story of oldest brother Zach's marriage to the wife he actually advertised for(she is more of a woman with her own mind), it was my favorite of the three. Zach has some deep rooted emotional problems when it comes to love. His first love died in an airplane crash two days before they were to be married. But that was 7 years earlier, and there is more to that story that Zach lets on. He just can't seem to get past it. But he wants heirs to his ranch "Hawk's Pride", land given to him by his father. When Rebecca Littlewolf sees the ad, she knows it was meant to be. After all, she lived on the ranch as a child while her father worked for Zach, and has been in love with him to this day. But Zach makes it clear right from the get-go that he only wants a mother for his children, and Rebecca lets him know that all she wants from him in return is to open a camp for children in remission of Cancer.Their passion heats up the pages while trying for a child, but Zach has given Rebecca 1 year to get pregnant. Can he keep from getting emotionally involved with this woman who heart is opened to everybody that needs a helping hand? Their story is a good one to get totally involved in.

These stories are also sold individually, and almost all the novellas are also sold in 2 in 1, or 3 in one books. some of them include 'Hawk's Way Grooms', and "Hawk's Way Rogues". Some of the books have a family tree in the beginning, so you can keep up with the family and also see the order of the books. Johnston has several other series to get involved with. One of my favorites was the 'Sisters of the Lone Star" series. Full length novels of romance and adventure in the old west, with a bit of history in each one. They are 'Frontier Woman", "Comanche Woman", and "Texas Woman". All great adventures, and sizzling romances.

Get lost in a romance for a while and enjoy the read....Laurie

3-0 out of 5 stars More like 2 1/2 stars. Weak when compared to her full-length novels
From the back cover:

She's unforgiving, headstrong and disobedient...she's a Whitelaw bride!

These three ladies of Hawk's Way are about to come face-to-face with something as rare as a friendly armadillo: three Texan men who are their equals! Each of these arrogant, opinionated, incredibly sexy ranchers is just itching to tangle with a passionate little spitfire in a lady's Stetson...and these women are all too happy to kick and scratch--and kiss--right back. Watch sparks fly--and love unite--at these unforgettable Whitelaw weddings!

Marriage...Whitelaw style...

Falcon Whitelaw offered his services--as husband and stand-in father--to a damsel in distress and her darling daughter. THE UNFORGIVING BRIDE was skittish about love, but this Whitelaw man could be very convincing...

Callen Whitelaw had one surefire way to soften up a rugged rancher out for revenge against her beloved father...THE HEADSTRONG BRIDE would marry him!

Zach Whitelaw chose his "convenient" wife for one reason only--to provice him with a brook of little Whitelaws. But no matter how many long, lazy days they spent in the marriage bed, THE DISOBEDIENT BRIDE refused to get pregnant...

And my review:

I've read and enjoyed almost every one of Joan Johnston's books. But this collection falls short of what this author is capable of. Of course, given the very short format of these catagory romances, that is to be expected, but it is still a bit of a let-down. I found that at least one character in each of these stories was either abrasive, or had very unbelievable reasons for making the decisions that they did.

In THE UNFORGIVING BRIDE, Mara, the heroine, blames Falcon, the hero, for her first husband's (Grant) death. But I didn't see how she could possibly blame him. Grant died because he drove while drunk, after he had met in a bar with Falcon. Only, Falcon left after the first drink, and had no idea that his friend would do something so irresponsible. It was just so stupid. He wasn't there. He didn't see his drunk friend get into a car and not try to stop him. Then it would have been his fault. I was left wondering why Mara didn't blame the bartender for serving Grant drinks, or the car manufacturers for not making a better airbag. It took her too long to admit that the only person responsible for Grant's death was...Grant! This was very annoying and detracted from my enjoyment of the story.

What did save THE UNFORGIVING BRIDE was the daughter, Susannah, who was fighting leukemia. She was so adorable that I would dare any reader not to love her. My heart would break for her suffering.

In THE HEADSTRONG BRIDE, it was the hero who was the annoying one. Again, he blamed someone for his father's death who had nothing to do with it. His claim was that this father had made some bad investments (supposedly on the advice of the heroine's father, Garth) that had been scams. When he had lost all his money, he had killed himself. The hero never even bothered to find out the facts (he was totally mistaken), just went down a twisted path of vengence where he decides to steal Garth's daughter from him back making her fall in love with him and then forcing her to choose. How twisted and sick. I wanted to shove his head into a pile of horse manure. (Well, that might have been difficult to do considering that his head was jammed way up his...well...a certain lower body orifice.) I felt that the heroine was waaaaay too good for him, and he didn't grovel nearly enough to satisfy me.

THE DISOBEDIENT BRIDE was a story that I didn't even finish. This time, it was the heroine who bothered me. I really hated the way she kept selling herself short. She marries Zach, knowing that he will never love her, even though she is secretly in love with him. I thought that to go into such a lopsided and unfair situation knowingly was idiotic. Plus, considering that the hero is 13 years older than her made it rather icky, especially when he kept calling her "kid" all the time. It was creepy instead of being cute.

So far, I haven't found any of the stories in the Hawk's Way series to be very satisfying, with perhaps the exception of THE COWBOY TAKES A WIFE, found in the Hawk's Way Rogues collection. If you want to read something good by Joan Johnston, I recommend THE INHERITANCE, THE COWBOY, THE TEXAN, the sisters trilogy (which includes TEXAS WOMAN, COMANCHE WOMAN and FRONTIER WOMAN) or THE CHRISTMAS BABY, a novella found in the A CHRISTMAS TOGETHER collection from Avon books. I wouldn't bother with HAWK'S WAY BRIDES unless you can find it in the library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hawk's Way Brides
If the book is by Joan Johnston they are all good . Just hope she don't go Modern. All the good writers changefrom what they are good at. The Western History Romance are the best...If You haven't read the 3 sisters books (some of her first) you are missing out . JOAN JOHNSTON IS SUPER ALWAYS.

3-0 out of 5 stars Par for the course
Not up to Johnstons usual standards. In each story there did not seem to be any depth to the relationship then BAM, they're in love.I found myself skipping pages and moving on to the story. The book was ok, nothing great. ... Read more
