Product Description
The Glycemic index can be a helpful tool to use for managing diabetes. It provides a measure of how fast certain foods, especially carbohydrates, are likely to raise blood sugar levels. So how this works then is, foods with a high Glycemic index rating have the potential to elevate blood sugar levels faster while foods that have a low Glycemic index rating will not bump up blood sugar levels as quickly, if at all.

People with diabetes can use the Glycemic index as a tool to guide in choosing foods to come up with the right diabetic diet for every meal. However, you need to take into account that a certain food's GI value is changeable; the standards set are mostly for foods in their raw state. Any effect any food will have on blood sugar levels depends also on factors such as cooking time, the amount of fiber and fat, ripeness, the person's blood insulin levels, recent activity and even the time of day.

The best advice is to stick to the established guidelines for a healthy well-balanced diet. These are the tried and tested rules:

* Choose foods high in fiber such as whole grains, legumes, fruits and vegetables.

* Choose fresh or raw foods in place of canned or processed foods

* Follow a low-carbohydrate, low in sugar diet as much as possible

Plan your diabetic diet with a licensed dietitian. He can help you interpret the Glycemic index to make meal planning more precise. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this for your iPhone
This does not work on the iPHone. The data pages are split so that you can't associate a food name with it's Gi index or carbs. Darn shame that. It should work fine on an iPAD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly written for dummies - easy to read and easy to understand
I enjoyed how this book was written - truly for a person not in the medical field who could read the information that was easy to understand and made good sense. It also has side bar icons to draw your attention to different bits of information which was important asit guided my mind as I was reading. The icons were
right next to the artical to be read saying: "Remember""Technical Stuff""Tip" and "Warning".You could read it if you choose or skip over it because of the code beside the information such as "Technical".

It also includes a list of foods and shows which ones are a better choices for you.The receipes are great!

I have recommended this book to others and will continue to do so.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lose Weight Forever
Enjoy this book.It has been amazing and has opened my eyes to my eating habits and has actually changed my eating habits. So much I didn't know with regard to low glycemic foods. This book is a life changer.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book has forever changed the way I look at food!
Wow. What a great read. For some background information, I am a registered dietitian and was taught that for the most part, calories in vs. calories out was the way to lose weight. I had been trying this for many years, and was unsuccessful with weight loss. Last year, I was diagnosed with PCOS, which basically stems from being insulin resistant, making it harder for me to maintain a healthy weight. At the beginning of this year, and subsequently my last year in my 20's, I knew I needed to make a change in my health to prevent diabetes and other health concerns and this would be the year to do it.

I started reading this book and couldn't put it down. The information is clear and easy to understand, and the book is a fun read with lots of humor. I couldn't believe how much I didn't know about the glycemic index/load and how different foods affect blood sugar differently. I had always assumed that as long as I kept my calories under goal, I would maintain my weight. This book taught me that the types of foods really do matter, but also, that nothing is off limits. I changed my thinking and way of eating. Now, I try to indulge in sweets and higher glycemic items as a treat vs. a daily habit.

I've also experimented with diffferent foods, mainly vegetables and grains that I would have never used. And much to my surprise, I love the taste of bulgur instead of rice, and quinoa as a grain. The recipes in the book are delicious and stuff I would actually make, unlike lots of other nutrition books with not-so-appetizing recipes. And hey, I don't miss those 25 extra pounds I was carrying around either.

Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone that wants to feel their best and take charge of their health. ... Read more

Product Description
Eating healthy means knowing the nutritional value of the foods we eat. Although once that only meant vitamins and minerals, we now have a new area: the glycemic index of carbohydrates.
What this does is give us an indication of how the sugar is being used in the body, and which carbohydrates have higher sugar content and should be restricted. Certain carbohydrates turn
to sugar more so than others, and thus create the potential for high blood sugar. Some of these products are easy to identify such as cakes, candies, and other sweets, but it also includes
other products such as potatoes, refined white flour, white rice, and even white bread.
Learning to eat carbohydrates that have a lower glycemic index is one step toward having a more nutritionally balanced diet. In addition, these products are more likely to keep your energy
level to be at its height of performance, thus preventing mid-morning or mid-afternoon
sluggishness that often results from skipping breakfast or consuming foods that are too rich in quick sugars. The carbohydrates that have a lower glycemic index create slow burning energy that keeps a person going longer in addition to maintaining that full feeling that prevents overeating.
For the person who has had trouble with weight in the past, the switch to low glycemic index carbohydrates will be a welcome change. Often people eat either because they need energy or because they feel they are hungry, but the way these carbohydrates work in the body will help with both of those issues and thus a person can eat less, maintain a high energy level, and feel full longer between meals. It will take a little time to become used to the transition, but once you learn new eating habits, you will not want to return to your old way of eating. ... Read more

Product Description
When I walked out of the doctor’s office, it hit me like a whack upside the head …

I really don’t know what diabetes is. What causes it, what it affects, and just how the heck did I get it?

Being one who does not want to take medication, I quickly decided that I need to know what I was up against if I decided not to succumb to a lifetime regime of diabetic medication.
I truly did not know how diabetes affects a person. I had a vague idea, but it was not even close to what I learned over the next five months.

I was obsessed with research. Learning whatever I could from books, medical journals, Internet resources, and interviews with 70+ people living with diabetes.

I interviewed doctors, dentists, optometrist, podiatrist, natural health practitioners, chiropractors and alternative health advocates.

What I learned was, how devastating a disease diabetes really is. The complications or conditions that are caused by “diabetes” are many. Many conditions worsen quickly when diabetes is ignored and not controlled. Some conditions truly diminish your quality of life. Others are fatal.

You don’t just catch diabetes like you do a cold.

I had been warned that my blood sugar test numbers put me in the “pre-diabetic” category three years earlier. I was warned again, and again.

Being in love with my “snacks” I chose to ignore the warnings, thinking “if I just eat only 2 cookies at a time instead of 6, I’ll be ok”. Well it wasn’t just the cookies. It was my whole lifestyle that put me at risk.

So here’s what I decided to do…

With all my research learning about diabetes, what causes it, and what it affects, I also learned that the conditions can be “reversed”.

Now when I say reversed, I am talking about reversing a diabetic trend. If you reduce your increasing body weight to a much healthier weight; that is reversing a diabetic trend. If you reduce consistently high blood sugar counts and control it; that is a reversal of a diabetic condition.

So after learning of many different ways to “reverse” diabetes and the conditions it brings, I decided that my fear of those conditions was much greater than my fear of giving up chocolate chip cookies.

I started making a plan, a plan to get me out of those diabetes test numbers.

The plan consists of:

1. “The Inner Game”
2. Nutrition, balanced meals
3. Exercise, intentional physical movement
4. Supplements

I believe that this concept/formula, which I named “The BetesBuster Plan” is flexible if you stay with the core foundation of nutrition. You can alter the exercise part to fit your needs. The supplements are optional. Your inner game is important because you have to choose to make change.

Do you want health, or a slowly debilitating quality of life?

By taking action and following the step-by-step plan, you will see a change in energy levels, weight loss, better concentration/focus, and a sense of "feeling great" within a couple weeks.

Your blood sugar levels will get much better as you become less "insulin resistant".A common dilemma among overweight people and people either pre-diabetic, or with type 2 diabetes.

It is always your choice, ignore diabetes and endure ever increasing dire health conditions, or take control of your life and health by taking action with a healthy lifestyle plan.

Try The BetesBuster Plan.It worked for me and many others that have tried it.I know you can do it.Fight the "beast" called diabetes.Never, ever, give up! ... Read more

Product Description

Why was this a #1 bestseller in Canada in 2002? Because it is an easy-to-follow, easy-to-stick-to, truly healthy approach to eating that is based on the Glycemic Index, the original science behind The Zone Diet, but eliminates that diet's complexity and tendency to leave dieters wanting more. If you can understand a traffic light, you can understand this diet--and lose weight permanently without feeling hungry, counting calories, or jeopardizing your health. If a food is in the green column, eat it. If it's in the red column, avoid it. And if it's in the yellow column, proceed with caution. Take bread, for example. White bread, with its high G.I. number, is red-because it's so highly processed the body digests it quickly, resulting in a spike in blood sugar, a release of insulin, potential storage as fat, and a quick return of the hungry feeling. Low-G.I. 100% stone-ground whole-wheat bread is green-the body takes a while to digest it, with no spike in blood sugar and a much longer feeling of satiety. Green, yellow, red: It's all here, with a full explanation of how the diet works, plus ratings for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, eating out or eating in. Includes some recipes, snack ideas, a shopping list, and tips on dining out.

2-0 out of 5 stars Overrated pamphlet
I purchased this book (paperback version) on the advice of my physician. He had suggested the kindle version, but the reviews for that were lukewarm due to the "color-code" nature of the book (all the charts and recommendations are color coded with red/yellow/green, like a traffic light, to indicate which foods are bad/mediocre/good).It took me about 2 hours to completely read this book, cover to cover, and I'm not a fast reader by any means. The author strives to use scientific jargon (such as glycemic index) and metabolic concepts to make this book seem more complicated than it really is.Here's bascially the gist of the book:If you want to lose weight, stop eating garbage. As a matter of fact, stop eating anything you like.If you like it, stop eating it.It recommends you eat 6 times a day (3 meals, 3 snacks). All of these meals/snacks should be small portions of 50% vegetables, 25% whole grain carbs, and 25% lowfat protein. It promises to make it easy to eliminate calorie counting and point counting by giving you lists of food that are acceptable in any portion (and then gives you warnings that some of these require small portions only).I could construct 2 or 3 meals out of the copious lists he provides. It may be my own ignorance, but I cannnot identify several of the items on his lists. What is a crispbread? What is Quinoa?Rest assured I can identify almost every item on the "RED" list, but I don't see how telling people what NOT to eat is going to help them lose weight.I guess this book would be helpful to a person so dense that they think they can eat bacon sandwiches with heavy mayo and lose weight. It makes sense to me that if I just eat brussel sprouts and flax seeds as the bulk of my diet and then add tiny amounts of food that actually tastes good, I would lose weight.Didn't need a book to tell me that.

2nd Problem:This author seems really keen on dairy products. He says you HAVE to have them.He drinks milk at every meal and half of his "green" list items are dairy.Really?Milk? Ice cream? Was that a joke?

3rd Problem:Although he mentions vegetarianism and says his diet is easy to follow for them, I beg to differ. The proteins on his "green" list are almost exclusivly animal derived. He throws in tofu, and beans are there (and he actually calls beans the perfect food at one point), yet he cautions strongly to keep the portion down because beans are also high in calories.I'm not arguing they are not, but again, I didn't want to read a book that tells me what NOT to eat!
What can I eat if I'm a vegetarian besides tofu for every meal?Liquid eggs if I'm not a vegan I guess...but my point is that I just didn't feel like there were enough options to justify telling people this book would be useful for vegetarians.

This "book" is a pamphlet that I assure you will absolutely allow you to lose weight if you follow its advice. If you DO so, you'll wonder why you needed the book in the first place. And there is NO WAY I would be able to (as the book states) be able to convert this diet into regular lifetime practice.

Well, unless I really develop a love for milk.

5-0 out of 5 stars The GI Diet
I received the book in just a few days after placing the order.I have read the first 3 chapters.I am using it to learn how to stick to a low glycemic diet and find the book very helpful for beginners to use. I purchased it to learn how to avoid the risk of diabetes.

1-0 out of 5 stars Kindle Version is currently worthless
I'm sure all the reviews of this book have been honest in their praise which leads me to believe the print version is excellent, but if you're looking at the Kindle version, DO NOT buy it.As you can imagine, a book with red, yellow, and green lists is just about worthless on a Kindle. In addition, the dozens and dozens of charts are so small they are unreadable unless you've got a magnifying glass handy.Sure, you can change the font to larger typeface, but the charts remain the same size--and that size is "tiny."
I've contacted amazon.com about this problem and they're going to get back to me if the publisher has a newer edition with clear charts and identifiable "colors" but in the meantime, I'd steer clear of this if you're buying for Kindle.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
The GI Diet is a great book for anyone who is not only looking to lose weight, but to lower your cholesterol. It's easy and I myself have lost 5lbs in the last 2 weeks without feeling deprived or hungry! Rick has shown me that I can still eat great food along with snacks AND desserts. At the back of the book there is a recipe section from which I have already made several of them and theyare very good :) Here's hoping that whom ever is reading this review will buy this book and pass it and the info in it along to their friends and loved ones the way that I have...Happy Eating!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars too much artificial/processed stuff
I was suspecting that I had insulin resistance, and it turned out that the GI diet was highly recommended for that problem. The book is clear and easy, that claim is true. But I definitely disagree with artificial/processed stuff suggested by the author.
(1) If you have a problem with cheese/milk fat, you are supposed to consume them in a very limited amount or not. I don't understand any diet that is "completely" based on processed low-fat dairies. Apparently the author's wife lives on skim milk/cheese/yogurt etc.
(2) What could be good with any type of margarine, why he keeps suggesting it? OK, I know, he says a small amount. Why not a small amount but natural oil? Does margarine have any benefit compared to others that I missed?
(3) This is the best in the book: THEIR FAMILY'S CHOICE IS SPLENDA. Apparently the GI Diet is sponsored by Splenda!

The author also claims that a rice or noodle based chinese food makes you hungry soon after. Is obesity a problem in China and they are hiding it? ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not much more than the original
This book didn't have much more info than the original book. Not really worth buying if you have the original already.

3-0 out of 5 stars Repeating to get more profits
I found the book to be very informative regarding healthy eating and maintaining glucose levels but it is a repeat from other books this author wrote. Just buy one and forget the rest of her books, they are all same because I bought four of her books, all said the same thing. ... Read more

Product Description

The statistics are staggering. Thirteen million Americans have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes; another 5.2 million don't know that they have it. During the past thirty years the diabetes rate has tripled, and each year about 200,000 people die from complications of the disease. The Centers for Disease Control project that one out of every three children born in the year 2000 will develop the disease. But Type 2 diabetes is largely preventable. Find out how you can avoid becoming a statistic.

As a respected physician and pioneer in the field of complementary medicine, Dr. Robert C. Atkins recognized early on that diabetes and obesity are twin epidemics, and that the way to reverse both is to permanently change the way people eat. Yet much of the mainstream medical establishment continues to advocate the treatment of diabetes with insulin and other drugs, while recommending a diet high in carbohydrates including sugar which raises your blood sugar. What you'll learn from reading Atkins Diabetes Revolution is that rather than correcting your metabolism, such a diet can actually increase your risk of developing diabetes -- and heart disease.

The Atkins Blood Sugar Control Program (ABSCP) helps you identify the metabolic signposts that indicate trouble long before the onset of Type 2 diabetes so you can stop it in its tracks. If you already have the disease, the ABSCP offers you and your physician a strategy for weight management and blood-sugar control, while minimizing your exposure to drugs.

Atkins Diabetes Revolution presents a comprehensive lifestyle program, including diet, exercise, and nutrient supplementation. The book also contains meal plans, recipes, a fitness routine, and case studies. This groundbreaking book, a fitting tribute to Dr. Atkins, tackles one of the greatest health challenges you and your family may ever face.

Amazon.com Review
Two colleagues of the late Dr. Robert Atkins take on the obesity epidemic's deadly twin: type 2 diabetes. Dr. Mary Vernon and Jacqueline Eberstein, RN, adapt the carb-cutting, fat-allowing Atkins nutritional approach as a preemptive strike against this fast-growing killer. Diabetes--defined here as a condition in which glucose or blood sugar is above the normal range--is viewed as a preventable problem. "What we hope we have created in this book is a realistic and practical guide to wiping out type 2, one person at a time." Since obesity is the major risk factor for diabetes, they begin with the "fat lie" (i.e., the belief that fat causes obesity) to voice the Atkins mantra: low fat means high carbs and high carbs are broken down into sugar. With a convincing mix of essay/picture testimonials, clinical studies, quizzes, checklists, and menu planners and recipes, Vernon and Eberstein make the case for diet and lifestyle changes to alter the metabolism of those at risk for diabetes. They have done a yeoman's job of translating Atkins'smedical nutrition advice into a step-by-stepprogram. One can quibble about their missionary zeal or the omnipresent eggs in the breakfast sample menus. At times, the scientific data are overly detailed or hidden within a quiz. Thankfully, there is a spot-on summary of the book's paradigm-busting ideas in the appendix.-- Barbara Mackoff ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Diabetics BEWARE of Adkins
My book came quickly. It was in excellent used condition. I would buy from this seller again.

HOWEVER the Adkins Diabetics diet itself is still dangerous for people like me who are already Diabetic.
After 12 days on the plan I was in the Hospital's ER... The doctors there said diabetics should NEVER
let themselves go into Ketosis, it is dangerous. Since Adkins is all about Ketosis all I can say is
BEWARE! Don't get me wrong I have always thought the Adkins diet is the best, just NOT for diabetics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Atkins for Diabetics great program!
I have now been on the Atkins For Diabetics plan for almost a month. While my body has responded nicely, my husband's, who has been diabetic for much longer and whose liver seems overactive, has not. My sugar is dropping, his is not. So be sure you communicate with your doctor about changes you are making (just as the Atkins Program suggests) because you may need more carbs and not know it. But when I need to take my jeans off, now I don't even have to unsnap or unzip them, I've lost that much in three weeks!(I neither measured nor weighed, but I can tell I'm smaller.) Give it a try!

Also, as far as Amazon's role in my purchase, the estimate of how quickly I would receive my book was two weeks longer than it actually took, so if you are very close to the point of origin, you too might get yours in less time than you thought! My book was in pristine condition when it arrived. I have since made it mine, but it started out great!

5-0 out of 5 stars Atkins diabetes revolution
This was a very good and detailed book on what and how to do things
with having diabetes it does wonders

5-0 out of 5 stars Atkins Diabetic Revolution
We are so pleased with the information and layout of this material. It has been extremely beneficial since the day we recieved it.An absolute MUST HAVE for any diabetic who would like to live life healthy and medication free!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars An Improvement Over Traditional Low-Fat, High-Carb Diabetic Diet
I must give credit to Dr. Robert C. Atkins for popularizing an approach - carbohydrate restriction - that helps people with diabetes control their disease, and likely helps prevent type 2 diabetes in others.Vernon and Eberstein do a great job explaining his program.

I can best summarize this book by noting that it is the standard Atkins diet with a few modifications: 1) special supplements2) you add additional carbs to your diet more slowly3) the warning that diabetics may well end up with a lower acceptable lifetime carbohydrate intake level.

By way of review, the Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution $5.99 is a very low-carb diet, particularly in the two-week induction phase."Very low-carb" means lots of meat, chicken, fish, eggs, limited cheese, and 2-3 cups daily of salad greens and low-carb veggies like onions, tomatoes, broccoli, and snow peas. After induction phase, you slowly add back carbs on a weekly basis until weight loss stalls, then you cut back on carbs.

As an adult medicine specialist, I have no expertise in pediatrics.I didn't read the two chapters related to children.

The authors present "complimentary medicine"in a favorable light.Unsuspecting readers need to know that much of complementary medicine is based on hearsay and anecdote, not science-based evidence. In that same vein, the two chapters on supplements for diabetes and heart disease recommend a cocktail of supplements that I'm not convinced are needed.I don't know a single endocrinologist or cardiologist prescribing these concoctions. Then again, I could be wrong.

Vernon and Eberstein provide two excellent chapters on exercise.

A month of meal plans and recipes are provided for 20, 40, and 60-gram carbohydrate levels.[The average American is eating 250-300 g of carbs daily.]The recipes look quick and easy, but I didn't prepare or taste any of them.

The 5-hour glucose and insulin tolerance test (GTT, paged 61) that Dr. Atkins reportedly ran on all patients who came to him is rarely done in other medical clinics. This doesn't mean it's wrong, but certainly out of the mainstream. The authors admit that at least a few people will have to count calories - specifically, limit total calories - if the basic program doesn't control diabetes, prediabetes, and the metabolic syndrome.Limiting portion size will speed weight loss, they write.

What we don't know with certainty is, will long-term Atkins aficionados miss out on the health benefits of higher consumption of fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains?Much of the scientific literature suggests, "Yes."

What if we compare the long-term outlooks of a diabetic Atkins follower with a poorly controlled diabetic who's 80 pounds overweight and eating a standard American diet? The Atkins follower is quite likely to be healthierand live longer.

A cardiologist's revolutionary weight-loss plan that allows dieters to enjoy good carbs while still losing weight

The glycemic index has been the basis of many popular diets. But it doesn't take into account the serving sizes people actually eat and eliminates too many foods for dieters to stick with it. Now Dr. Robert Thompson's breakthrough program uses the glycemic load--the glycemic index adjusted for serving size--to take the GI a step forward. The glycemic load is a more accurate and effective tool in controlling weight and insulin resistance, allowing dieters to eat more foods while still burning fat, cutting cravings, and speeding up their metabolism. Safe, simple, and scientifically proven, it's the smartest weight-loss plan yet.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book worth reading
Dr. Thompson's book, The Glycemic Load Diet, simply works for me. If you don't read anything else read this..."The combination of removing the starch from your diet and activating your slow-twitch muscle fibers is the simplest way to lose weight."
Cutting out breads, potatoes, and other white starches and exercising will result in weight loss.THIS IS NOT A LOW CARB diet. This is not Dr. Eades' Protein Power Diet. Milk, nuts, and fruit can be part of the plan as well as a few peanut M&M's.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a winner!
This Book is a Winner!

I didn't know losing weight could be so easy. I read Dr. Thompson's book, did what he said, and twenty pounds just melted away - no dieting, no painful exercise, no rebound weight gain. I had tried other diets before, and they never seemed to work. They were unsatisfying and whatever weight I lost came right back. Since I learned about the glycemic load and slow twitch muscle exercise, I have been eating tastier, more satisfying food ever, and my weight just keeps creeping down. I feel great. I just bought copy to give to a friend.

3-0 out of 5 stars Glycemic Loads listed in the book are all wrong
I have diabetes and became quite interested in the glycemic load.I have developed a program that calculates the glycemic load from the glycemic index and the amount of carbohydrates in the item.I have a program that I installed on the iPad and have verified EVERY number found using my program.EVERY number for the glycemic load in this book has failed to verify. The information listed in the book appears to be correct, but do not believe any of the glycemic loads listed.I always tell people "Don't take my word for it, do the calculation yourself."At first, I thought my program had a problem in it when it kept giving answers WAY lower than those in the book. When I finally checked against other web sites and the data in the database on the iPad, EVERY number from my program was verified indicating ALL the numbers in the book for glycemic load are WRONG.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Simple and Effective Program
This is an easy to follow diet plan you can stay on for life--you won't be hungry and you will lose weight.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sure am glad to have discovered this book.
My dermatologist suggested this book with great praise. I purchased the book a week after that visit and discovered a whole new meaning to my true weight gain over the years. From the second week of April till June 15th, I have lost 33 pounds with hardly any effort. I am now eating more healthy than I ever have. I wish I could shake the authors hand. ... Read more
