Product Description
Abstract: Obesity is a global health problem that is increasing in prevalence. The World Health Organization characterizes obesity as a pandemic issue, with a higher prevalence in females than males. Thus, many pregnant patients are seen with high body mass index (BMI). Obesity during pregnancy is considered a high-risk state because it is associated with many complications. Compared with normal-weight patients, obese patients have a higher prevalence of infertility. Once they conceive, they have higher rate of early miscarriage and congenital anomalies, including neural tube defects. Besides the coexistence of preexisting diabetes mellitus and chronic hypertension, obese women are more likely to have pregnancy-induced hypertension, gestational diabetes, thromboembolism, macrosomia, and spontaneous intrauterine demises in the latter half of pregnancy. Obese women also require instrument or Cesarean section delivery more often than average-weight women. Following Cesarean section delivery, obese women have a higher incidence of wound infection and disruption. Irrespective of the delivery mode, children born to obese mothers have a higher incidence of macrosomia and associated shoulder dystocia, which can be highly unpredictable. In addition to being large at birth, children born to obese mothers are also more susceptible to obesity in adolescence and adulthood. Prevention is the best way to prevent this problem. As pregnancy is the worst time to lose weight, women with a high BMI should be encouraged to lose weight prior to conceiving. During preconception counseling, they should be educated about the complications associated with high a BMI. Obese women should also be screened for hypertension and diabetes mellitus. In early pregnancy, besides being watchful about the higher association of miscarriage, obese women should be screened with ultrasound for congenital anomalies around 18 to 22 weeks. The ultrasound should be repeated close to term to check on the estimated fetal weight to rule out macrosomia. Obese pregnant women are screened for gestational diabetes around 24 to 28 weeks. During the second half of pregnancy, one needs to closely watch for signs and symptoms of pregnancy-induced hypertension. Once in labor, an early anesthesia consultation is highly recommended irrespective of delivery mode. When Cesarean section is performed, many obstetricians prefer an incision above the pannus to avoid skin infection. However, the incision should be decided upon the discretion of the surgeon. Peripartum, special attention is given to avoid thromboembolism by using compression stockings and early ambulation. ... Read more

Product Description
Not long after becoming public health concerns in the 1980s, HIV and AIDS were featured in a number of works of fiction, though such titles were written primarily for adult readers. Mirroring the disease's indiscriminate nature, however, the subject wouldsoon be incorporated into novels aimed at young adults. Despite a need for accessible information on the subject, it is difficult to identify fiction that contains material about HIV/AIDS, as these books are seldom catalogued for this content, nor is this content consistently acknowledged in published reviews. In HIV/AIDS in Young Adult Novels: An Annotated Bibliography, the authors address this gap by identifying and assessing the full range of young adult novels that include HIV/AIDS content. This resource is comprised of two major parts. The first part summarizes findings from a content analysis performed on novels written for readers aged 11-19, published since 1981, and featuring at least one character with HIV/AIDS. The second part is an annotated bibliography of the more than 90 novels identified for use in the study. Each entry in the bibliography contains an annotation that summarizes the plot and how HIV/AIDS is depicted in the story, an indication of the accuracy of the HIV/AIDS content, a note on how central HIV/AIDS is to the story, and an evaluation of the literary quality of the book. This work will assist readers in collecting, choosing, evaluating, and using these works to educate readers about HIV/AIDS. ... Read more

Q: What do type 2 diabetes, heart disease, obesity, alcoholism, depression and many other psychiatric disorders have in common?

A: They’re the so called diseases of affluence.

These diseases are the result of the increasing wealth of our society. But yet it’s the middle and working classes that are disproportionately affected.
The cures are simple. Go back to the way of our ancestors. Eat what’s needed when it’s needed and get enough exercise. No fancy pills and supplements just do what comes natural.

THIS BOOK IS ONE OF THE MOST COMMON SENSE HEALTH BOOKS OF LATELY.THE INFORMATION IS ALMOST COMMON SENSE IN THAT WE CAN CLEARLY SEE THE REASONING PRESENTED IN THIS BOOK JUST BY LOOKING AROUND AT THE EVER INCREASING ILLS OF OUR SOCIETY. WHILE WRITTEN TO BENEFIT DIABETICS AND THOSE ON THEIR WAY THERE,IT IS GOOD FOR ALL OF US. NO HYPE, HOAX OR BIG PROMISES,JUST COMMON SENSE NUTRITIONAL , MEDICALLY PROVEN ADVICE. THIS BOOK SHOULD NOT BE INCLUDED WITH THE LOW CARB DIET CRAZE,BECAUSE IT IS NOT A FAD.SEE, YOUR GRANDMA WAS RIGHT, WATCH OUT FOR THEM STARCHES!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Explanation Ever
I finally understand the relationship between carbohydrates and starch to my overall well-being. Dr. Thompson not only provides a layman's explanation of the glycemic index but gave me the tools to determine what foods to avoid or at least eat in moderation. i am not a diabetic but if I were, I would commit this book to memory.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous book!!!!!
For the first time I understand why I have problems keeping the weight off!! This book was a revelation to me. What I really appreciated was that Dr. Thompson writes in a way that I could understand. It is the only diet that I have been able to follow and it works!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Modern Atkins

10 years ago I lost 100lbs using Dr Atkin's low carb books and felt great. I then met and married my dear husband, moved to America, had children and several miscarriages, partook of the terribly sweet foods and excessive portion sizes until last Oct. I had gone to the doctor for a knee problem and discovered my BP was high. I was horrified, knowing I was overweight again by some 50lbs, and expected to have a heart attack immediately. That visit was a true blessing as it was the shock I needed to change my health again. I went back to Atkins, started riding my bike, mounted on an indoor trainer since we have snowy winters, 30mins 5 times a week. After 3 days once again I was feeling so much better, sleeping better, had more energy.I came to Amazon looking for any updated Atkins/low carb books and found Rob Thompson's book. I confess I got it from the library to read but then bought it for my Dad, who has type 2 diabetes and he thinks it great too! It is less severe than Atkins, which I believe makes it more doable long term. He explains things very easily and has really added modern findings since Atkins day as far as how foods affect your blood sugar levels. I have been on his way of eating etc for 3 months and lost 12lbs and several inches.I would encourage you to record your measurements rather than rely solely on your scales. My blood pressure is now normal and so are my cholestrol numbers.I would not hesitate to recommend this book and his others to you, even if you are not struggling with weight issues.

5-0 out of 5 stars A real eye opener and a big help
For years I've been concentrating on a low or NO sugar diet but that didn't stop me from eating bread, rolls, pasta and potatoes. Dr. Thompson's book has shed light on the importance of concentrating on a NO STARCH or low starch diet to control or prevent diabetes. I thought that would be impossible for me.But I found, that as the days went by on my diet,my cravings for starchy foods abated.NOW, after a few weeks, I don't miss bread at all.I lost 16 pounds.Of course I also follow a strict exercise plan.I do pushups and walk 40 minutes a day.Dr. Thompson's book offers good advice on coping with controlling blood glucose levels. My readings are normal. My doctor is pleased with my diet plan. And I find that I can eat fruit and even ice cream and still keep my sugar levels down.
This isn't rocket science.A lot of what's in this book has been known by doctors for years. But this book is surprisingly easy to read and understand. And it offers recipes to add a little variety to your diet. I highly recommend this book.It changed my life and I hope it helps others as well. ... Read more

Countless people around the globe are living lives that are not complete, lives that are not developing to their fullest mental, spiritual and physical potential, lives that are characterized by lack rather than abundance. The late Wallace. From the Hardcover edition.Amazon.com Review
The Sugar Busters! diet lets you eat just about anything exceptcertain carbohydrates, including refined sugars, red and whitepotatoes, corn, white rice, highly processed grains, beets, andcarrots. This cookbook offers a variety of Sugar Busters!-acceptable recipes, averaging about 40 percent "correct"carbohydrates, 30 percent protein, and 30 percent fat. Theserecipes won't keep you in the kitchen all day, though most aren'tproduced in a flash, either. Breakfasts are predominantly eggdishes. Lunches include Stir-Fried Ginger Chicken, ChesapeakeCrab Cakes, Whole-Wheat Spaghetti with Olive-Tomato Sauce, Fourthof July Macaroni Salad (colorful with red onions, tomatoes, green bell peppers, and onions), and Bayou Spicy Boiled Shrimp. Dinner entrées emphasize meat, fish, and poultry, with some regional and international dishes. The collection also includes separate recipe sections for vegetables, appetizers, salad dressings, sauces, and holiday dishes.

Many recipes are high in fat, especially saturated fat, such as Green Chilies Cheese Casserole, which uses six large eggs and four cups of grated cheese to eight ounces of green chilies. No nutritional breakdown is provided, so if you're trying to keep your fat intake to 30 percent, you'll have to guess. Theauthors suggest finishing the meal with "dessert of a simplegreen salad coated with a subtle olive oil and milk herb dressingor a few bites of cheese" or "a few nuts." If those don't hit thespot, there's a choice of seven dessert recipes, including a high-saturated-fatvanilla ice cream made with six egg yolks, a quart of whole milk, aquart of cream, and a cup of artificial sweetener. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good Info. Fair Condition
The book I received had all the information I was looking for.I liked the title itself. However, I paid around $7 for the book and the vendor didn't bother to take the $2 garage sale sticker off the front which was a little disheartening. The condition of the book was not great either.

1-0 out of 5 stars Yuk!
There aren't many good recipes in here.I realize that without sugar you naturally sacrifice some taste, but this is bad. They never offered up any good alternatives to the sweet that you're giving up, other than artificial sweeteners.I'm not replacing a natural sugar with a chemical.I admittedly have a sweet tooth and this book was less than helpful to me.

Product Description
Diabetes has become a seemingly unstoppable national epidemic, affecting more than twenty million Americans. Conventional wisdom calls it incurable, but renowned Dr. Gabriel Cousens counters that claim with this breakthrough book. There Is a Cure for Diabetes lays out a three-week plan for reversing the negative genetic expression of diabetes to a physiology of health and well-being. Dr. Cousens’s method, widely tested at his famous Tree of Life centers, is to reset the DNA through green juice fasting and a 100% organic, nutrient-dense, vegan, low-glycemic, low-insulin-scoring, and high-mineral diet of living foods in the first twenty-one days. Both practical and inspirational, the book explains how to abandon the widespread “culture of death”–symbolized by addictive junk food–that fosters diabetes in favor of a more natural, nurturing approach. The program renders insulin and related medicines unnecessary within four days as the blood sugar drops to normal levels; and the diabetic shifts into a non-diabetic physiology within two weeks. The third week focuses on live-food preparation, featuring 100 delicious raw recipes. Dr. Cousens emphasizes regular consultations, monitoring blood chemistries, and emotional support, and includes a one-year support program to help maintain a diabetes-free life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ideas wonderful, raw does cure diabetes, writing is scattered
Dr. Gabriel Cousens should be celebrated now as one of the most ingenious doctors of our time! Other physicians should all be required to study his findings. Dr. Cousens is obviously a genius and could benefit from a well-organized and practical editor (probably female mind - no offense intended). The book is a bit scattered and no real layout of food ideas organized to follow easily. I was 100% raw for over a year when I got the book, so I already had a pretty good understanding of practical implementation. Still I found it difficult to incorporate an improved regimen from this book (my reason for the purchase). I can say that my diabetes has all but vanished (from 9.0 A1C with meds. to 6.1 A1C without meds). My heartburn is gone for good, all my bloodwork is great, and I don't catch colds or flu anymore.

5-0 out of 5 stars SPANISH VERSION AVAILABLE.
About this book. Excellent. Just like the other reviews.

For those who would prefer to read the book in Spanish, please google "Hay una Cura para laDiabetes - Gabriel Cousens". You should find it in his Tree of Culture Store online.

Happy reading.

The book was for my wife.We could not find it at any bookstore.Thank you for such prompt, wonderful service. The book is a gem and my wife is learning many new things.

4-0 out of 5 stars Eating Patterns for Highly Motivated People
This technical book offers helpful advice in reducing weight and blood sugar levels. On the other hand, Dr. Cousens' plan is extreme, expensive and confusing. As other reviewers noted, not many people could subsist on the Tree of Life program, at least not without help from the costly Tree of Life Rejuvenation Center. The book does include beneficial information, such as beanpod tea use and lists of essential foods, juices, herbs, vitamins and minerals.Take that information and practice as diligently as possible.Personally I find the book's rigid regimen near impossible to maintain, at least to the levels Dr. Cousens requires.I have found a more do-able diet/lifestyle approach by reading and following the free advice of David Mendosa at [...].This website is crammed full of useful information trying to achieve the same goals as Dr. Cousens' book--but it's easier to understand and practice in real life.

5-0 out of 5 stars like a good habit - hard to form and easy to live with
