Product Description

Health and Community Design is a comprehensive examination of how the built environment encourages or discourages physical activity, drawing together insights from a range of research on the relationships between urban form and public health. It provides important information about the factors that influence decisions about physical activity and modes of travel, and about how land use patterns can be changed to help overcome barriers to physical activity. Chapters examine:

? the historical relationship between health and urban form in the United States
? why urban and suburban development should be designed to promote moderate types of physical activity
? the divergent needs and requirements of different groups of people and the role of those needs in setting policy
? how different settings make it easier or more difficult to incorporate walking and bicycling into everyday activities
A concluding chapter reviews the arguments presented and sketches a research agenda for the future. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Public Health and Planning finally reconverge
This is a very well written and presented book about the physical elements of our community design that compel us to discriminate certain forms of transportation over others (i.e., motorized over car). The implications are about health--getting enough "moderate" exercise each day. "Moderate" exercise is more accessible than the various forms of specialized exercises we have (i.e., sports teams, going to the gym). Exercise can be utilitarian in nature--it doesn't have to be specialized. For instance, transportation can be a form of exercise. When it is utilitarian--built into activities we have to be doing anyway--it saves time, instead of being "another thing to add to the schedule" it is killing two birds w/one stone.

Certain features and designs in the built environment are more helpful in encouraging the general population to using forms of moderate exercise (i.e., walking, biking) as transportation.

The idea of "utilitarian exercise" is cool--I wish they would have talked more about other (nontransportation) forms, such as gardening, etc.

The book also contains an excellent but brief review of the history of community health and planning at the beginning--how "solving" the health problems of the past era have led to the health problems of this era. The goal this time is to find a real solution--not one that leads to different types of health problems all over again.

Most satisfyingly, it is very well written and easy to read through.Any jargon is well-explained, and it is kept to a minimum.Based on quantitative science, it never (to my recollection) leaps to conclusions its data could not support--rather the authors highlight questions which the data produce and need to be pursued further.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent but probably will be outdated in a few years
This book is one of the first to address the relationship between suburban sprawl and Americans' sedentary habits. The authors point out:
1) that Americans drive more and walk less than residents of other affluent nations
2) that Americans have become more sedentary and fatter in recent decades
3) that Americans exercise more when they live in more pedestrian-friendly environments, and
4) that Americans are unable to walk as much as they would like because most American cities and suburbs are built by highway engineers and government planners to discourage pedestrian traffic; streets are too wide to safely walk, zoning codes mandated densities so low that shops are often not within walking distance of residences, and federal housing regulation has encouraged streets to be disconnected to each other that nearly all journeys require a stop at a high-speed, congested arterial.
Because this book was built in 2003, the authors devote relatively little space to the connection between sprawl, lack of exercise and obesity. In recent years, some studies have begun to document this connection, and I hope that the authors come out with a second edition addressing these issues. ... Product Description
An expanding array of hazardous substances poses an increasing threat topublic health. But what makes our society a toxic culture are the socialarrangements that encourage and excuse the deterioration of human healthand the environment. Elements of toxic culture include the unquestionedproduction of hazardous wastes, economic blight, substandard housing, chronic stress, exploitative working conditions, and dangeroustechnologies. Toxic culture is also a metaphor for the ways ourlanguage, concepts, and values frame debates, ignoring the politicalconflicts and power relations that influence public health.

Reflecting a diversity of voices and critical perspectives, the essaysin this book range from critiques of traditional thinking and practicesto strategies for shifting public consciousness to create healthycommunities. Rather than emphasize policy reform, medical advances, andindividual behavior, the essays stress the causes of ill healthassociated with the production, use, and disposal of resources and, moreimportant, inequality. The contributors include academics, politicalactivists, and artists. Connecting the essays are a recognition of thepolitical and cultural dynamics that influence public health and acommitment to organize against the powerful interests that perpetuateour toxic culture.

Product Description
Life Support brings together the best medical information available on the implications for human health of the global environmental crisis. Written by prominent physicians and public health experts who see environmental degradation as a serious threat to public health, it provides essential information for health professionals, policymakers, concerned citizens, and environmental activists. The book, which is a sequel to the 1993 Critical Condition, covers a broad range of topics, including air and water pollution, population and consumption, climate change, ozone depletion, ultraviolet radiation, biodiversity loss, habitat destruction, war, and vulnerable populations (workers and children). It also discusses such controversial topics as environmental endocrine disruption and risk assessment. The focus is on solutions. Each chapter ends with specific recommendations for actions to solve particular environmental health problems.Underlying the book are three major themes: that the habitat is an important determinant of human health, that prevention of human illness must involve protection of the environment, and that well-informed physicians can and should communicate with the public and policymakers about environmental hazards. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Loving it!
I bought this book after reading some of the reviews, which I am enjoying a lot.It has a great amount of recipes and ideas. Also bought a set that has all of the oils for it (Basic Care Aromatherapy Kit by Edens Garden)When I looked at buying individually, it was a lot more money. Not only is this a great deal, the oils are super high quality.I am enjoying both and a great combo to buy together!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Information
This book has a variety of information - from making skin care products to healing. It is very thorough. I, personally, would have liked something extremely in-depth but this fits the bill for most things.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I've read some of the bad reviews but I think that this book, like any other book, is just an opener to the great uses of essential oils. Many complaints are due to the fact that many readers did not take the time to further research exactly what they needed and just expected this book to provide answers to thier varied problems.Personally, I have found this book to be of great help for myself, my customers, family and friends. There is a great receipe for in-grown hairs, herbal teas and preventative measures for acne.NO this is not an answer all book but it has been useful to my business. The herb salve that I now make has gotten rave reviews.I not only used this book as a reference, but I also did further research to ensure that the information was valid.

Product Description
Winner, 2007 Davidoff Award presented by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning (ACSP)

When environmental health problems arise in a community, policymakers must be able to reconcile the first-hand experience of local residents with recommendations by scientists. In this highly original look at environmental health policymaking, Jason Corburn shows the ways that local knowledge can be combined with professional techniques to achieve better solutions for environmental health problems. He traces the efforts of a low-income community in Brooklyn to deal with health problems in its midst and offers a framework for understanding "street science"—decision making that draws on community knowledge and contributes to environmental justice.

Like many other low-income urban communities, the Greenpoint/Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn suffers more than its share of environmental problems, with a concentration of polluting facilities and elevated levels of localized air pollutants. Corburn looks at four instances of street science in Greenpoint/Williamsburg, where community members and professionals combined forces to address the risks from subsistence fishing from the polluted East River, the asthma epidemic in the Latino community, childhood lead poisoning, and local sources of air pollution. These episodes highlight both the successes and the limits of street science and demonstrate ways residents can establish their own credibility when working with scientists. Street science, Corburn argues, does not devalue science; it revalues other kinds of information and democratizes the inquiry and decision-making processes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Science-based point-by-point six arguments which are clearer than more general surveys of the issues involved.
Scientific studies maintain that eating more plant foods and less animal products can lead to years of better health: a diet which also results in less pollution and impact on the environment, too. For those who would still argue the facts, SIX ARGUMENTS draws more direct links between dietary choices and environmental and health issues, with chapters providing step-by-step proofs on how meat-loaded diets lead to ill health and environmental degradation. While the theme isn't new, it's the reasoned and exact, science-based point-by-point six arguments which are clearer than more general surveys of the issues involved.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sustainable, Efficient & Healthy Eating
The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) has built upon the work of the Rocky Mountain Insitute, Frontline and Earth Policy Institute by providing a rational look at the environmental and health concerns involving foods we eat. This same group publishes "Nutrition Action Newsletter" and industry groups sometimes refer to as the "food police."

CSPI provides clear, concise and objective ways to grow and eat food sustainably, covered in six major areas:

1. Less Chronic Disease and Better Overall Health
2. Less Foodborne Illness
3. Better Soil
4. More and Cleaner Water
5. Cleaner Air
6. Less Animal Suffering

Recommendations include Changing Your Own Diet and Changing Government Policies. We are a nation of obsesity and heart disease by design, not accident. CSPI takes a big picture "Least Cost, End Use" (long term) sustainable and prevention approach. It is not an individual meal or snack, but the cumulative effect in our communities, regions, states, nations and world wide that are all interrelated. Long-term government policies are reflected in the epidemic of obesity in our youth. Visit almost any K-12 school and you will see the high trans-saturated fat, high salt, empty calorie foods that are modeled and served to students.

With emphasis on "grain-fed beef" for marbling, flavor and tenderness as an end-point, we have ignored the health and environmental consequences. Based on various studies, it takes between 20 and 25 Joules (60 to 100 calories) of grain to produce one Joule (4 calories) of beef. This is an inefficient way to produce food. We should just eat the grain and avoid most of "throwing away" energy on animal production.

Changing Government Policies recommends constructive, long-term, sustainable changes: 1) Increase fruit and vegetable consumption, 2) Reduce the Fat Content of Meat, 3) Reduce the Fat Content of Milk, 4) Label Food More Accurately, 5) Prevent Foodborne Disease (i.e., the recent E. coli and spinach problems), 6) Prevent Antibiotic Resistance, 7) Stop Promoting Unhealthy Meat and Dairy Foods (i.e., "Got Milk" advertising) and 8) More Healthful Meals at Government-Run Facilities. For Improving the Environment there are specific recommendations for 1) Prevent Air Pollution from Factory Farms, 2) Prevent Water Pollution from Factory Farms, 3) Reduce Water Use, 4) Reduce Pesticide and Fertilizer Use, 5) Reduce Feed Grain Use, 6) Reduce Indirect and Direct Subsidies that promote waste and 7) Prevent Overgrazing on Public Lands.

These are not new argumentsor solutions, but with 300 million people in the USA (6.6 Billion on Earth) these questions and constructive alternatives become more important. Factory farms that focus on profit and ignore "externalities" are sure to encounter economic and environmental problems down the line. CSPI's recommendations run counter to industrial agriculture feeding at the trough of subsidies. Organic foods are increasingly in demand and seen as profitable (i.e., Whole Foods and community farmers markets).

There is light and healthier eating at the end of the tunnel, but we will continue to have to wade through a lot of waste and inefficiency in the name of short-term profit for a while. This book consists of "uncommon" knowledge in one place. CSPI will continue to address healthy eating in "Nutrition Action Newsletter" and future publications. ... Read more

Product Description
Thsi important book offers a revolutionary approach to solving a range of social problems--drug use, smoking, unsafe sex, and overpopulation--by applying marketing techniques and concepts to change behavior. For example, it shows that at-risk teenagers are consumers who decide whether or not to ``buy'' safe sex practices. This successful approach is based on Alan R. Andreasen's more than twenty years' experience of consulting, teaching, and research with social marketing programs around the world.

Andreasen shows that effective social change starts with a thorough understanding of the needs, wants, and perceptions of the target consumer--who has ultimate control over the outcomes. The book offers a detailed explanation of how to design a step-by-step program that will move the customer from ignorance and indifference to action and ultimately maintenance of that action. Marketing Social Change offers a wealth of information for developing an effective social marketing plan.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good basic book on social marketing
This book provides a very good overview of social marketing.I use this as a text book in a graduate course that I teach and find it useful in giving students a clear idea of how social marketing relates to the broader topic of nonprofit marketing, without requring them to wade through all of the additional information that a more general marketing textbook would offer.Author Alan Andreason is a leading thinker on the topic of social marketing and has organized this relatively short book in a straightforward manner that makes it easy to separate the preparatory work from the actual execution of social marketing plans.

The one complaint I have about this book, and the reason that I have not awarded it five stars, is that the examples used are less than exciting and I find that I need to supplement this book with additional titles so that my students get the bigger picture of how social marketing principles play out in various cultures around the world, not just in the United States. For those who are looking to expand their understand of social marketing in the developing world and in emerging economies, see also Marketing the Public Sector by Seymour Fine.Sadly, this great book is a bit dated, as it was published in 1992, but balanced with this Andreason book (or a comparable book by Philip Kotler) you will be able to give yourself a solid grasp of the topic.

Product Description
`Kelly's exhaustively researched and highly informative discussion of the nine WTO disputes involving environmental protection and public health represents an important scholarly contribution. This book is the most detailed and sophisticated analysis of the role of the WTO's dispute mechanisms in addressing an increasingly important and highly controversial category of trade disputes.'
- David Vogel, University of California, Berkeley, US

`Does the WTO favor trade at the expense of national sovereignty, the environment and public health, as the critics contend? Or is it a democratic institution that gives all countries a seat at the table for a feast of free trade? Trish Kelly's superb book, The Impact of the WTO is the first careful and comprehensive look at the actual environmental and health disputes adjudicated at the WTO to try to answer this question. Her answers are well-researched, objective and unlikely to fully satisfy either side in this sometimes raucous argument: Kelly concludes that, so far, the WTO has not sacrificed sovereignty, the environment and public health; but looking forward, the poorest countries need more assistance to have greater access to the dispute settlement mechanisms. She also shows that strong political action at the national level is necessary to protect public health and the environment. Though controversial, this book will provide the gold standard of careful analysis on these issues for the foreseeable future.'
- Gerald A. Epstein, University of Massachusetts Amherst, US

This volume is the first to provide a comprehensive analysis of the nine environmental and health disputes that have been adjudicated at the WTO since 1995. The investigation concludes that criticism of the WTO has been overstated and, surprisingly, nations do in fact retain sovereignty over environmental and health policy. The disputes explored suggest that the WTO has been able to balance trade, environmental and health objectives. The discussion illuminates the strengths and weaknesses of the dispute resolution process and closes with suggestions for improving it.

The Impact of the WTO will appeal not only to academics, be they economists, lawyers, political scientists, and academic libraries, but also practitioners, policymakers, and members of consumer, environmental, and business organizations who follow the debates surrounding the WTO's influence on environmental and health regulations. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Narrow, but informative (4.5 stars)
Before reading this book, I'd been inclined to believe that the WTO could effectively force member nations to prioritize international trade above values like public health or a clean environment. Trish Kelly (TK) makes a good case that this hasn't clearly happened yet, at least.

TK's argument is based on the nine trade disputes relating to health and the environment that have actually been adjudicated under the WTO's Dispute Resolution Mechanism (most of which included decisions by the Appellate Body). Although in most cases a member's regulations were ruled unreasonable, TK's detailed analysis shows that usually this was because of problems with the member's actual implementation or with evidence, rather than because the regulation was impermissible in principle. In some cases, such as the asbestos case, import bans were even upheld. Moreover, since the "losers" were usually developed countries, they were able to game the compliance phase so that their sovereignty emerged pretty unscathed as a practical matter, too.

TK takes pains to point out lingering ambiguities, such as in the Appellate Body's view of whether public health considerations may be prioritized over commercial ones. She is often highly critical of the legal reasoning of the panels, and even of the Appellate Body, and offers suggestions for improving panel performance. She also describes academic and NGO reaction to many decisions, and includes a sprinkling of cites to critical opinions in the chapter bibliographies. An interesting subplot in the book, relevant for NGOs, is the WTO's evolving attitude toward "amicus curiae" briefs from outside parties. Throughout the book, TK's writing style is dry, but generally clear.

That said, it's important to recognize what this book does and does not do. It does stick to actually-adjudicated cases through early 2007. It does not "address virtually all of the environmental and health controversies surrounding the WTO" (@7). Many disputes under TRIPS relating to drug patents are mentioned only briefly, if at all. TK doesn't conjecture about potential future conflicts, even simply to point out where they might arise (such as concerning biotech seeds under TRIPs). There isn't any discussion of the General Agreement on Trade in Services, which has potential impact on health care and on trading in carbon rights, among other pertinent areas.

Also, if you're looking for some background philosophical perspective on sovereignty, the precautionary principle, risk assessment and other broad concepts that provide context for understanding the WTO decisions, you'll need to look elsewhere. TK does discuss the precautionary principle in the specific context of several cases, but implicitly accepts that the burden of proof should be on the party who wants to place limits on action. For an analysis of why this might not be so straighforward, see, e.g., the 2006 article by Alessandra Arcuri available on SSRN. (BTW, the lack of any separate entry for the precautionary principle is just one of features that makes the book's index maddening to use.)

A final limitation is that, aside from a few brief allusions, the book tends to look at the WTO more or less in a vacuum. Generally, other treaties are discussed only to the extent they factored into arguments made by parties to a particular dispute. But many of the most problematic antagonisms between the values of commerce and those of health, environment and freedom from hunger are implicated in bilateral and regional trade agreements. The goal of such agreements is often for developed countries to grab concessions missing from the WTO agreements -- e.g. the US's program of encouraging trading partners to agree to "TRIPS-plus" provisions about intellectual property. It's not necessarily a flaw of the book that it deals with this broad topic with only a passing reference (@189). But if you're really interested in the WTO's impact on those fields, you need to consider this wider context.

This book provides a useful, concise synthesis of reams of information. Its analysis is narrow, but generally even-handed. It should be helpful to anyone wanting to get his or her feet wet in understanding WTO's experience with dispute resolution and with some important social and scientific issues of the day. Just keep in mind that it describes only part of "the impact of the WTO."

5-0 out of 5 stars Examines each of the issues - such as gasoline, hormones, asbestos, GMOs, among others
The World Trade Organization has been a highly controversial subject in the past thirteen years of its existence. Trish Kelly, Senior Lecturer at Vanderbilt University, looks to provide a comprehensive analysis on them in "The Impact of the WTO". Kelly asks if perhaps people's criticism over the WTO's practices has been overstated, and examines each of the issues - such as gasoline, hormones, asbestos, GMOs, among others - highlighting both sides of the WTO's impact on all of them. "The Impact of the WTO" is essential to any discussion involving the group and is highly recommended to economics and political science library collections.

Product Description

This book examines the policy and politics of two health risks, which have recently become prominent social issues in many countries. One is the issue of asbestos as an environmental risk to humans, and another is that of bovine spongiform encephalitis (BSE), or mad cow disease as an animal disease, and of its variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) as a human food risk. Employing a set of analytical frameworks in political science, each case study explores how the issues emerged, agendas got set, alternatives were chosen, and policies were implemented. Through the analysis, it is examined how safety and public reassurance were pursued in the countries studied (Japan, the UK, France the USA, and Korea). Exploration of the successes and failures in their efforts discloses the key elements to successful health risk management.
