Product Description
The therapeutic landscape concept, first introduced early in the 1990s, has been widely employed in health/medical geography and gaining momentum in various health-related disciplines. This is the first book published in several years, and provides an introduction to the concept and its applications.Written by health/medical geographers and anthropologists, it addresses contemporary applications in the natural and built environments; for special populations, such as substance abusers; and in health care sites, a new and evolving area - and provides an array of critiques or contestations of the concept and its various applications. The conclusion of the work provides a critical evaluation of the development and progress of the concept to date, signposting the likely avenues for future investigation. ... Read more

Product Description
Controlling the risks of working with chemical substances is widely recognized as one of the major elements in ensuring a healthy workplace. Not surprisingly, control strategies for chemicals used in the workplace feature prominently in both regulatory and voluntary approaches to improving the work environment. But their impact on the vast majority of workplaces in which chemicals are used remains problematic. This is especially so in small enterprises across the whole range of economic sectors and work activity, in which there is demonstrably poor understanding among owner managers concerning their responsibilities for chemical risk management. Why this has been so, how it is being addressed, and with what results are the subjects of this book. Currently the regulatory profile governing the management of chemical risks at work is in the process of major restructuring in Europe, as discussions take place about implementation of the REACH (Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals) reforms in European legislation. It is claimed that the impact of these provisions will be substantial and significant, especially in relation to downstream use of chemicals in smaller enterprises, because the new regulations will aim to improve risk communication within the supply chain-identified as a particular weakness of previous approaches. The book examines the evidence for this weakness and the extent to which it is likely to be addressed by the new regulatory framework. ... Read more

Most international attention on Myanmar has focused on the political situation, where the military, in power since 1962, continues to refuse to acknowledge the results of democratic elections, and on related human rights issues. This book, by focusing on education, health and environment, and on the institutions which formulate and deliver policy in these fields, shows how the international community can make a significant difference to strengthening Myanmar's civil society and to supporting a future democratic form of government, by encouraging institutional developments in these fields.Such developments in turn, the author argues, will re-skill the younger generation, promote economic development and poverty alleviation, and, through a participatory approach to policy-making, nurture the conditions from which democracy will grow. ... *** Highly commended in the Public Health Category of the British Medical Association Book Competition 2005***

Every child has the right to live in a healthy supportive environment - an environment that encourages growth and development and protects from disease. Many of the world s children however are exposed to hazards in the very places that should be safest - the home school and community. Considering that their growing bodies are particularly sensitive to environmental threats the final burden of childhood disease is substantial. Every year more than three million children die due to unhealthy environments.

This atlas articulates where and why more than three million children die every year due to unhealthy environments. It tackles issues as diverse as the devastating and largely unknown impact of indoor air pollution the unfashionable tragedy of sanitation and complex emerging issues like climate change.

Full-color maps and graphics clearly demonstrate the threats that children face everywhere and underscore the impact of poverty on children s health. While this crisis cannot be ignored and demands urgent action success stories such as the Montreal Protocol show a way forward for the world to make sure that our children will inherit a safer planet and a brighter future.

Product Description

Global Integrity Project has brought together leading scientists and thinkers from around the world to examine the combined problems of threatened and unequal human well-being, degradation of the ecosphere, and unsustainable economies. Based on the proposition that healthy, functioning ecosystems are a necessary prerequisite for both economic security and social justice, the project is built around the concept of ecological integrity and its practical implications for policy and management.

Ecological Integrity presents a synthesis and findings of the project. Contributors - including Robert Goodland, James Karr, OrieLoucks, Jack Manno, William Rees, Mark Sagoff, Robert Ulanowicz, PhilippeCrabbe, Laura Westra, David Pimentel, Reed Noss, and others - examine the key elements of ecological integrity and consider what happens when integrity is lost or compromised. The book:

  • examines historical and philosophical foundations of the concept of ecological integrity
  • explores how integrity can be measured
  • examines the relationships among ecological integrity, human health, andfood production
  • looks at economic and ethical issues that need to be considered inprotecting ecological integrity
  • offers concrete recommendations for reversing ecological degradationwhile promoting social and economic justice and welfare
.

Contributors argue that there is an urgent need for rapid and fundamental change in the ecologically destructive patterns of collective human behavior if society is to survive and thrive in coming decades.

Ecological Integrity is a groundbreaking book that integrates environmental science, economics, law, and ethics in problem analysis, synthesis, and solution, and is a vital contribution for anyone concerned with interactions between human and planetary health. ... Read more

Product Description
Every day, workers are injured, made ill, or killed on the job. Most often, workers experience these harms individually and in isolation. Particular occurrences rarely attract much public attention beyond, perhaps, a small paragraph in the local newspaper. Instead, these events are normalized. This membrane of normalcy, however, is ruptured from time to time, especially after a disaster. This edited collection draws together original case studies written by leading researchers in Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Sweden, and the United States that examine the politics of working disasters. The essays address two fundamental questions: what gets recognized as a work disaster? And how does the state respond to one?

In some instances, it seems self-evident that a disaster has occurred. For example, when a mine explodes killing tens or hundreds of workers simultaneously, the media and politicians recognize that this is not just a personal tragedy for the families of the victims, and that more troubling questions need to be asked about how this could happen. In other circumstances, however, the process that determines what gets recognized as a disaster is much more complicated. Working Disasters addresses the politics of recognition in case studies of the long-haul trucking industry, repetitive strain injuries, and lung disease in miners.

Once it has recognized that a working disaster has occurred, the state typically goes beyond its routine responses to the daily toll of work-related deaths and injuries. Inquiries may be initiated to review the adequacy of regulatory systems and laws may be amended. Sometimes disasters produce meaningful change, but often they do not. In this text, the politics of response is considered in studies of a factory fire, the loss of an offshore oil rig, lung disease among miners, a mine explosion, and the prosecution of health and safety offenses. ... 52. The Boiled Frog Syndrome: Your Health and the Built Environment
by Thomas Saunders
Paperback: 261 Pages (2002)
list price: US$50.00
Isbn: 0470845538

Editorial Review

Product Description
A frog jumps into a pot of water which is gradually being heated. As the water gets warmer, the frog adjusts its body temperature and continues to adjust to the increasing water temperature until, ultimately, the frog is boiled alive.

Like the frog, we keep adjusting and reacting to the increasing health and ecological hazards to satisfy our expectations and demands for more comforts, greater convenience and easier living. Despite our Western materialism, few people seem to be satisfied and content.

The Boiled Frog Syndrome presents compelling evidence to show that the source of the majority of the Western diseases of civilisation that have multiplied over the past 100 years, ranging from cancers to debilitating sicknesses and allergies, can be traced to the modern built environment, our increasing exposure to electromagnetic radiation and the indiscriminate use of untested advanced technology. It is also due, in part, to the 20th century's repudiation of perennial wisdom.

Our physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing will depend on our endeavours to bring about fundamental changes to combat the hazards. But how can this be done? And what can we - the so-called ordinary people - do about it? The text explores how our subtle energy sensitivities respond to the external environment and suggests the steps we can take to ensure our homes and workplaces are safe and conducive to our continued good health. For this it draws on common sense and the author's personal experience as a practising architect and consultant. It is also based on the wisdom and teachings of the past, gleaned from those who knew how to create a healthy, harmonious environment.

This book provides the reader with the 'ammunition' to challenge the attitudes of the practitioners and their teaching institutions who are engaged in the built environment.

"A tour de force. This book is both visionary and immensely practical, giving advice from which we can all benefit." David Lorimer, Project Director, Scientific and Medical Network

"This book demands attention from first to last page, and will undoubtedly prove to be a formative and informative influence on every reader." Roger Coghill, Director, Coghill Research Laboratories

"Thomas Saunders' book could not come at a more relevant moment when events remind us that we must have respect for the environment in which we live - otherwise we will cease to live. A complex, fascinating, always open-minded attempt to show us how to challenge the Establishment." Maureen Lipman, actress

"An eye-opening, life-enhancing book." Neville Hodgkinson, formerly medical and science correspondent to The Sunday Times

"A fascinating book. Whatever your views, prejudices or assumptions, Thomas Saunders brings new perspectives to important global environmental and design issues affecting the future of our planet." Robert Rowland, former Editor of the BBC's 'Money Programme' and 'Panorama' and Head of BBC Open University Production Centre

"Thomas Saunders' fascinating new book offers us all a wake-up call for the way we are living our lives. He convinces us that we can play a part, however small, in changing both our personal and global environments. The Boiled Frog Syndrome is a book that can truly make a difference." Les Dennis, entertainer

"Thomas Saunders effectively links the seemingly mutually exclusive worlds of ancient arts and skills, modern sciences, humanity and design to weave a compelling story that makes these arcane subjects accessible to all. This book is suitable for general reading and should also become a standard text for architecture and design students and other professionals. After reading The Boiled Frog Syndrome we will never look at the world in the same way again." Peter Ullathorne, JP RIBA AADipl. FRSA AAIA, Vice President, HOK International, London ... Read more

In this book the authors examine the contribution of social scientists to the topics of health and environment. They present diverse perspectives on classical and contemporary debates by focusing on social scientific framing of environment and health, as well as on the potential contribution of social science to problem solving strategies in these fields.
