Product Description
For decades, health professionals have asserted the importanceof public participation in interventions for health. Medicine haspursued patient participation in clinical decision-making. In thepublic health realm, target groups have been asked to assist in thedesign and implementation of initiatives for health. In practice, however, patients and populations expect health professionals to giveadvice and -- in some cases -- to make decisions on theirbehalf. This implies limits to the ideal of participation. In thisinnovative work, the author contrasts public and professionalunderstandings of health and the best ways to achieve health. Theresult is a model of lay participation in the structuring of medicaland public health activity. Product Description
Healthy Cities looks at the design of communities in the United States as mandated by law and how that design affects the delivery and cost of health care. This book recommends modifications to reduce health care costs, assure an adequate health infrastructure, and increase disease and trauma prevention through improved urban planning mechanisms. Healthy Cities is the first book in the fields of public health and urban planning to explore legal mechanisms to integrate health and urban design policy. American urban design contributes to obesity, air pollution, and traffic congestion. Imagine if our communities were designed for health, fitness, and convenience. Can housing and neighborhoods be designed for pleasant walks and car-free living? Can streets be tree-lined and attractive? Can pedestrians enjoy their surroundings and experience rather than being sandwiched between traffic and parking lots? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a brief guide to health and urban planning
Here, as in some of his other works, Kushner explains how American transportation and planning policies encourage automobile-dependent development, and how some European cities do things differently.

What's different about this book is Kushner's focus on health issues. He argues that automobile dependence not only increases the likelihood of sedentary (and thus unhealthy) lifestyles, but also increases injuries and deaths from car crashes, as well as disease from air pollution.

The best part of this little book is the footnotes and bibliography.Although this book is too short to provide an enormous amount of detail, it gives you the tools to find more information.

[Full disclosure: I know the author and think of him as kind of a mentor, so my rating isn't exactly impartial]. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Job

3-0 out of 5 stars Needs some polishing
This book has some good content but needs some polishing. This book is the assigned text for 1 of my Master's classes. In each chapter, you can probably read the 1st paragraph and then skip the next 2 - 3 pages. The book makes too many repetitive statements. The same point will be made over and over again in only slightly different wording.Needs a good editor to hack away at it and then the book could probably be reduced by at least 1/4.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful Information that could SAVE LIVES !!!
Catherine Diodati, M.S. has presented a well documented account of the dangers of vaccination with an unique ethical perspective. Yes parents do have rights. They can now arm themselves with this seminal information to protect their children and the inalienable right to decline any or all immunizations. I urge all interested in our childrens' health to obtain this definitive effort.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Catherine Diodati'sbook on Immunization
Catherine Diodati's work is the best that I have read to date regarding the issue of immunization. It is written in a style that is easy to read, with some acidic wit thrown in at just the appropriate place to keep the topic semi-lighthearted. The book is well researched, well referenced, and well documented with just enough politics of health care to help the reader reach the only conclusion that can be reached. BRAVO!

5-0 out of 5 stars Vaccine Science...an oxymoron!!!
Catherine Diodati's book on Vaccines and their ethics is a must read for all parents harnessed with the difficult task of navigating through the maze of "Vaccine Controversy".This book provides much needed insight into the essential pillars of medical and legal ethics. Her meticulous work greatly helps in the final analysis of the dilemma facing all potential recipients of Vaccines. If a medical procedure like vaccines can't even pass basic medico/legal ethical standards, should we be so quick to have our children or ourselves repeatedly exposed or injected with the stuff? Thank you Catherine for your most timely book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must reading for anyone interested in Vaccines
The author presents a well researched up to date guide on all aspects of vaccines and vaccination with important historical, ethical and legal considerations as the book title implies. Product Description
Over the past thirteen years, New Labour has made us wade through a quagmire of petty rules, health and safety lunacies, madcap laws and nitpicking regulations. We have been snooped on, hectored and hounded by state nannies from cradle to grave, all because government and its agencies have nothing better to do than to interfere in our lives. It would not be so bad if the Government ran the country well, but we have to put up with high taxes, street crime, late and dirty trains, the unjustified and disproportionate use of fines and charges, bloody-minded parking restrictions, excessive public sector waste, preposterous European directives, useless and unaccountable council officials and multi-culturalist busybodies. In this explosive and groundbreaking new book, Philip Johnston makes a stand and exposes the 'Bad Laws', those irritating laws, regulations and Whitehall idiocies that make life in Britain the day-to-day nightmare that it is today. He covers the following laws amongst many others: The Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (Ripa) or 'snooper's charter', that allows a wide range of government bodies and quangos to watch over people, check on what they are doing and monitor their communications; The Safeguarding Vulnerable People Act...which will require 11 million people working with children or the elderly to obtain a certificate allowing them to continue to do so yet will be easily evaded by those few individuals who are a danger to children; The Hunting Act - More foxes have died every year since the Act came into force; and, The Children Act - All 25,000 state and private nursery schools, child minders and playgroups are required to follow a new statutory framework dubbed the 'nappy curriculum'. Smoking Ban - It has interfered both with personal freedom and with commercial enterprise. This book discusses: Housing Act - which brought us Hips in the midst of a property price slump.European Arrest Warrant - which allows British citizens to be extradited to another jurisdiction to stand trial for an offence that is not a crime in the UK; Dangerous Dogs Act, which became synonymous with hasty and ill-thought-out legislation; Firearms Act which wiped out the sport and livelihoods of thousands of law abiding people; War Crimes Act, pushed through using the Parliament Act but which has resulted in not a single conviction; Religious Hatred Act which made a bad thought a crime. Numerous Health and safety laws of every description; and, The Licensing Act which made it an offence to play a piano in a pub without authorisation. ... Read more

Product Description
This classic textbook has provided students of medical law and ethics with a framework for exploring this fascinating subject for over 25 years. Providing coverage of all of the topics found on medical law courses, it gives an overview of the inter-relationship between ethical medical practice and the law. The authors, both hugely experienced and influential in the field, offer their own opinions on current debates and controversies, and thereby encourage readers to formulate their own views and arguments.

As a still-developing discipline, medical law is significantly shaped by the courts, and as such this book provides extensive coverage of recent judicial decisions as well as statutory developments. The last edition included a new chapter on the European dimension to health care, and this edition continues to take a comparative approach, with particular importance attached to the shift in influence from transatlantic jurisdictions to those of the EU.

This book has continually evolved to reflect changes in the law and shifting ethical opinions - this eighth edition continues to fulfill this remit and is essential reading for any serious medical law student or practitioner, as well as being of interest to all those involved in the delivery and control of modern healthcare. ... Product Description
Biotechnology & Nanotechnology: Regulation Under Environmental, Health, and Safety Laws analyzes regulation governing biotechnology and nanotechnology industries. Regulation of biotechnology, which generally encompasses the manipulation of living materials by passing genetic information from one organism to another, emerged in the 1970's and is of major concern to the medical, pharmaceutical, chemical manufacturing, and agricultural fields.
