The Human Heart:A Basic Guide to Heart Disease 2nd Edition
By: Brendan Phibbs MD
Wolters Kluwer/ Lippincott Williams and Wilkins

There has been a growing need for jargon-free medical literature which is both easily comprehended and accessible to the non-expert. In part, this need has arisen over the past several decades in response to the increased recognition of patients as equal partners in healthcare decisions. However, medical students and professionals can also benefit from clearly written texts without extraneous detail or use of esoteric terminology as they are often presented with vast amounts of material to learn in a short time.As a rule, we would expect any single resource, no matter how well written, to fail in serving both audiences effectively. The Human Heart:A Basic Guide to Heart Disease 2nd Edition is a notable exception.

Brendan Phibbs has created a resource that distills the core knowledge of cardiology into highly readable chapters with simple diagrammatic aids to ensure understanding. Each chapter is short and concise. For example, the opening chapters which cover the basic structure of the heart are written from a functional perspective without extensive anatomical detail. The majority of the book is devoted to cardiac pathophysiology and diagnostic techniques. For a reference that is little over 200 pages in length, there is an admirable amount of practical information on topics ranging from pharmaceutical therapy options for coronary artery disease to the latest information on arrhythmia management.

Of great importance to the lay reader is a presentation of the most effective method of cardiopulmonary resuscitation developed by colleagues of the author. This method differs fundamentally from prior standards but the rationale for the changes that are advocated is clearly set forth.

The author's years of experience as a clinician and teacher show throughout the book. One can imagine the text developing from a long list of "frequently asked questions" posed by his patients and students. The text also reflects a deep understanding of how to avoid confusion while explaining complex physiological processes. The book uses terms to which nearly any reader can relate. This makes it an excellent primer on heart disease for medical personnel as well as comprehensive reference guide for patients who want to be better informed about their disease and treatment.

5-0 out of 5 stars The cases grabbed me like a mystery novel

I am a fan of Drs. Webb and Gatzoulis.I had the pleasure to shadow Dr. Webb in his clinic and his case conference when he was in Toronto and it was one of the most memorable clinical experience.Reading his new book remind a me of the great time I had with him during my training years.

The cases are very interesting and they are presented in a very engaging manner. There are some simple cases, but many of the cases are difficult and involve complex clinical decision making. The cases read like a detective novel. The case number 10 by Dr Broberg, straddling of the tricuspid valve, was particularly memorable because the case was complex, decision was even more complex (involving all subspecialties of cardiology), the outcome was gut wrenching, but after finishing the case I gained a lot of cardiology pearls.I admire the writers for their courage in presenting cases with suboptimal outcome, which are very informative for the readers.

Beginners in congenital heart disease will learn a lot from the focused discussion points: so no need to worry if you are a true beginner, but it would be optimal to read Dr. webb's chapter in Braunwald Heart textbook first. Even for people with casual interest in congenital heart disease (e.g. Adult general cardiology fellows) the discussions of ekg and physical exam findings in each case will make you a better cardiac clinician. But for clinicians who deal with congenital heart disease on a daily basis, this is an important "not-to-be-missed" landmark publication.

The echo, Cath and CT/MRI images are clear and informative.

I thank the authors for this very engaging book. ... Read more

WINNER OF THE BOOKS FOR A BETTER LIFE AWARD

One out of every two women will die of heart disease. It is the single greatest health risk for women today–more than stroke and all cancers combined. In the course of her practice, and as chief of Women’s Cardiac Care at New York’s Lenox Hill Hospital, Dr. Nieca Goldberg has come to a startling realization: Women experience heart disease in a fundamentally different way than men do.

The physiology of a woman’s heart attack is not the same as a man’s, the symptoms of heart disease and signs of impending heart attack differ for women, and once heart disease has been recognized, women often do not get the treatment and medications they require. Now here are detailed, age-specific programs that give women the facts and the guidance they need to recognize, treat, and prevent heart disease, including

• how you can rate your risk of heart disease
• the effects of menopause on your heart
• risk factors you can change–starting today
• a heart-healthy exercise plan that works for you
• a complete guide to heart-healthy supplements
• the truth about hormone replacement therapy and the heart

5-0 out of 5 stars A Life-Changing Book
This is a great book! The recipes are simply delicious--I never have been able to bake bread before and have it turn out, but the whole wheat recipe here comes out beautifully and it's delicious. Some of my favorite recipes are the banana barley loaf, the lentil loaf, the oat pancakes and topping (I used apples rather than pears for the topping), the corn bread, the lentil soup, the marina and pasta sauces, the Indian Subzi. There are too many to name them all!And too, I use the advice in this book to convert older favorite recipes with unhealthy ingredients to heart healthy yet delicious alternatives.I love the approach too, with a focus on not only nutrition and fitness but also emotional and spiritual health--I found that once I was used to not adding salt to food, and consistently followed the advice in the book, I no longer craved foods as I used to, achieved my target weight, and felt better than I ever had in my life. I have never had heart disease, diabetes, or high blood pressure, but all are very prevalent in my family. I wanted to do something to lose weight and to keep myself fit.I think the advice in this book is for everyone, those with heart disease and those who want to keep their hearts healthy.Heal Your Heart is an awesome book that can change your life. ... Product Description
A Change of Heart is a detailed account of the revolutionary Framingham Heart study — which, over the years, has provided conclusive evidence that cardiovascular disease is largely the result of measurable and modifiable risk factors. First begun in 1948, not long after Franklin Delano Roosevelt succumbed to a massive stroke, the study of over 5,000 citizens ofFramingham, Massachusetts, changed the course of medical history. The lessons learned in Framingham allow each of us to control our risk of heart disease and stroke, two of the leading causes of death in the United States. Here is a clear-eyed and intriguing assessment of the achievements of this study and of its continuing importance to our health today. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but a newer version is available
I bought L carnitine and the heart, The CoQ10 phenomenon and The Sinatra Solution by Dr Stephen T. Sinatra all at once.

I was very impressed by Sinatra's ideas and the way his books are put together. They are very easy to read for laypeople, but also contain very complex and detailed information for those that would like it. There is also a lot of useful information given on dosages and types of supplements and how they differ and which are best and the information is all well referenced.

As it turned out, my buying of the first 2 books was unnecessary, as 'The Sinatra Solution' book is a summary of both of them and also slightly more up to date.

The information in this book is ESSENTIAL for anyone that has M.E., or any other mitochondrial or cardiac or neurological disorder. (As is explained in the HFME paper 'CoQ10 (ubiquinol), L carnitine, D ribose and M.E.'). I can't recommend L carnitine, magnesium and ubiquinol more. I hope patients will look into them and read the facts rather than just rejecting them because they are not yet totally 'mainstream.' This has far more to do with substances like carnitine being unpatentable than any lack of scientific support for these supplements!

'The Sinatra Solution' is an ideal book for patients and also for patients to give to their doctors. I highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars heart protection
Another heart book that I have found to be very informative for helping to protect or possibly heal the heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quick and Easy life-saver
It is customary that an author is asked to fill 250 pages worth of content for a paperback.Sometimes, the author manages to convince the publisher to agree for something like 200 pages. At other times, if he/she is well established, he/she can even fill up the pages with "blanks", like de Bono did in "Simplicity".

But this book is 49 pages (leaving out the table of contents, references, index, etc.) of goodness. And I love it.

This book has a "life-saving" message about benefits of L-Carnitine based supplementation program. Some important details are as follows:
* Inside every cell in our body, there are components called mitochondria; heart cells have three to ten times more mitochondria than cells from other parts of the body
* You can think of mitochondria as a cell's power plants.
* Mitochondria start failing with aging.Failure in the energy production mechanism leads to many degenerative diseases.
* L-Carnitine helps in mitochondrial energy production by transporting free fatty acids (fuel) into them
* L-Carnitine also seem to assist in removing the spent fuel from mitochondria.
* Once the fuel is inside the mitochondria, other supplements like Coenzyme Q10 (a vitamin like substance), minerals, etc. help in burning the fuel.
* Supplementing L-Carnitine, along with Q10 and few other minerals/vitamins (a) improve the condition of heart muscles, (b) reduce cholesterol and triglyceride, (c) increase the general energy levels and (d) more.

I read this book several months ago and started a supplementation program similar to the one recommended in this book.Within a month of starting the program, my triglyceride level had dropped to less than half (from very high pre-treatment levels).I expect that the levels to further go down (and, perhaps, normalize) in the next two months.

The concepts in this book are now widely accepted by many doctors world over. None of these recommendations can produce any harm (provided, your supplements are not contaminated). Given these, it is very sad indeed that vast majority of the suffering public is unaware and respected press keeps talking the supplementation programs down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone over 40 needs this book
Drs. Stephen and Jan Sinatra lead the pack in cardiologists with the patient's best interests at heart - pun intended! They have done excellent research and exhibt a progressive attitude regarding the use of replenishing the body's own elements, which diminish with age, for reinforcing our natural bio-stasis.They explain why we develop deficiencies in essential amino acids, the consequences, and what to do about it.I have taken the advice in the section on Carnitine and Coenzyme Q!10 here in full, and the benefits are undeniable.
If you take prescription drugs for any cardiac or circulatory condition, you need to be informed! You can read this in a couple of short sittings.

Product Description

Written in plain English by a board-certified cardiologist and a clinical psychologist who specializes in heart disease, this is a practical “what-to-expect” guide that will help readers cope with their confusion, fear, and lack of information, as well as decode what doctors really mean when they describe certain cardiac procedures, treatments, and medications. The authors clearly explain these issues so that anyone who is at risk of heart disease, or who already has it, will have a deeper understanding of what a heart attack is, how to deal with the hospital experience, and how to interact more effectively with their doctors. In addition, the book offers insights into often-neglected aspects of the disease such as the role a patient’s spouse and family play in recovery and what women should be aware of in the diagnostic phase of their treatment. Finally, the authors supply workable motivational tools—an effective treatment model anyone can understand and use—to help make important lifestyle changes in order to get better, stay better, and avoid invasive and expensive procedures in the future.

This book explains issues of heart health in easy-to-understand terminology. The authors offer realistic and achievable goals in both preventing and dealing with heart disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Real Thing
I have a strong family history of heart disease and I was drawn to the title of the book. While reading the book it occurred to me that this is how medical books should be written. It felt like the authors were actually talking about me and to me. It was amazingly easy and even fun to read but also provided the information that none of my doctors ever talked about. The chapter on diagnostic test was perfect. It validated my experiences with heart tests and I liked how they talked about the "humiliation factor." Most importantly, I liked how they recommend treating one risk factor/problem at a time and not to overwhelm the patient with "you better do this list right now." No Bull was simple, to the point, informative, and a great read.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is SOOOO great!
It felt like these authors were sitting in my living room talking straight to me about how to handle the health issues that my father is facing. In the 3 hours it took me to read this book, I got more information than I did from all the research I have done online and in the library. The whole book simply makes good sense. These authors delivered it simply and effectively!GREAT READ! ... Product Description
What even your doctor may not know about the real heart attack risk factors and what you can do to prevent heart disease now.

You count your cholesterol, monitor your fat and sodium consumption, and get regular exercise. But consider these facts: Many people who have heart attacks have cholesterol counts below 200. Low-fat diets can actually raise the heart attack risk in some people. And the wrong kind of exercise can do your heart more harm than good. Now for the good news: You can do something about it, and this book shows you how.

Recent research has revealed that the real risks are a combination of factors that you-and your doctor-may never have heard of, including the crucial differences between cholesterol types and much, much more. In The Heart Disease Breakthrough, Thomas Yannios, M.D., explains the state-of-the-art medical research and the science behind the latest breakthroughs in testing, diagnosis, nutrition, and exercise. And he presents a clear, easy-to-follow 10-step program for counteracting your individual risk factors and attaining optimum heart health.

"For those seriously concerned a with preventing heart disease, this is your guide: detailed, current, strongly worded guidelines. Yannios. . . isn't interested in cushioning the facts or the remedies in a feel-good framework. . . . Guidelines are set out here involving diet, weight control, exercise, and medication. Yannios doesn't let readers off easily, but that doesn't mean he can't offer realistic help: for instance, practically every cardiac risk factor can be countered by exercise; it just has to be the right type of exercise. Heart disease prevention is among the fastest-advancing medical research areas, with new, often conflicting recommendations being published daily. For those at serious risk, this is an understandable, serious, and worthwhile approach." - Kirkus Reviews ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Low Fat Diet Not for Everyone
15% of the population could be harmed by low-fat diets and unless you like playing Russian roulette with your life, you should find out if you're one of them (it requires a specific type of cholesterol test). This book is backed up by scientific studies and goes into relevant details of different types of cholesterol particles. It does take some effort to extract the infomation that is spread throughout the book but it is well within reach of most readers and well worth the effort.

I've read a number of books on preventing heart disease and this one is reccomended because it gives extremely important information you will not find in magazine articles, brochures, or other books. It goes into excellent detail on diet and exercise. The only reason why I think these facts aren't better known is that the extra complexity would confuse some people and cause a few to not to adopt low fat diets which is beneficial to most people.

4-0 out of 5 stars The first book to tell the lipoprotein story
Despite the broad awareness of cholesterol issues in the U.S., heart disease is rampant. A good part of the reason is that many people have causes for heart disease beyond cholesterol. Dr. Yannios has written the first book for the public that makes the complex issue of lipoprotein testing understandable for the average person. Lipoprotein testing fills in the huge gaps left by cholesterol, identifying risk for heart disease even in people with low or normal cholesterols. Dr Yannios talks about how shockingly often people who've suffered heart attacks (an often fatal event!) are told by their doctors that no cause can be identified, or that the causes are genetic and therefore untreatable. Absolute nonsense! Dr. Yannios tells us why.

5-0 out of 5 stars No fluff in this book.
Just intensely interesting and highly informative material that is presented perfectly. This information will motivate you to make the changes in your life necessary for good health - and not through "scare tactics".

It's difficult for me to comprehend how anyone who reads this book can come away with a negative opinion that results in a bad review.

I only wish that I had come into possession of this knowledge at an earlier date.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some good stuff, some risky advice
It is encouraging that Dr. Yannios rejects many of the conventional (and incorrect) approaches to heart disease prevention. There have been no studies that conclusively link high blood cholesterol, high dietary cholesterol, high dietary fat, or high blood triglycerides to heart disease.(For more on this, see Dr. Uffe Ravnskov's excellent book "The Cholesterol Myths.")I was pleased particularly pleased to see him mention that many people who have heart disease have normal cholesterol. In fact, nearly half of the patients in the Framingham heart study who died of coronary disease had blood cholesterol under 220!

I am, however, concerned that Dr. Yannios seems to be so concerned with atherosclerosis as a cause of heart disease. As Dr. Ravnsknov's book shows, there is no evidence that atherosclerosis causes heart disease, nor is there any evidence that high blood cholesterol causes atherosclerosis. And without that evidence, it is plainly risky to treat otherwise healthy patients with expensive cholesterol-lowering drugs that may have serious short- and long-term side effects, simply because they have preatherosclerotic streaks in their arteries.Even fetuses have such streaks.Should we give newborns cholesterol lowering drugs? If so, I am going to go sink all my money into pharmaceutical stocks.

I say, read this book, but read it skeptically.Do not go out and ask your doctor to prescribe cholesterol lowering drugs for you, especially if your cholesterol is normal.Go to a good library and read the journal articles on cholesterol and heart disease yourself, including the numbers.(Summaries can and do lie!)Read the clinical trials of cholesterol lowering drugs to discover the side effects of these drugs, and ask yourself whether, if you are currently healthy, you want to live a life riddled with those side effects in the name of your "health."Read a book on statistics so you'll understand what is and is not statitistically significant. And read "The Cholesterol Myths."

5-0 out of 5 stars Have an MI, then BUY THIS BOOK
I had an MI at the age of 36 (ouch).Since then I've tried to keep up to date on all the real, important research about heart disease causes and prevention.Trust me, you don't want to have a *second* MI.

This book takes all the important stuff you need to know and gives it to you in a form you can understand.Better than that, you can take *action*.Action that is tailored to *YOU*.

Both my GP and my Cardiologist knew less about all the risk factors than I did.We did the super-low-fat diet thing and they wanted to treat my lipids with *only* statins. This book has helped me educate them and given me what I need to advocate for myself.I'm know doing everything I can for my *specific* risk factors.

My diet is now low in carbohydrate. My doctors, of course had put me on an ultra-low-fat diet, which, for me (and for 25% of the U.S. population), was *exactly the wrong thing*.When I went on a high-protein, low carb, moderate fat diet my lipids ***greatly*** improved (oh yah and I lost 30 pounds).

Given my lipids, I know now that Niacin *and* statins are the right choice for my profile (I had an LDL-GGE test recommended in the book).

Hey I just had a thought...maybe *you* should buy this book *before* you have an MI... ... Read more
