Product Description
Almost one million Americans die each year from cardiovascular related illnesses. This number accounts for 41 per cent of all deaths in the US each year. In fact, cardiovascular disease claims as many lives as the next eight leading causes of death combined, including cancer, accidents and AIDS. And, despite an aggressive campaign launched by the American Heart Association to counter the epidemic of heart disease, one person dies from it every 33 seconds. For nearly four decades, we have relied on medical myths to guide us in our attempts to prevent and treat cardiovascular disease. We have been told to reduce our cholesterol, saturated fat intake, and to take lipid-lowering medications. This book examines these myths and gives readers the facts to make better choices and live longer lives free of heart disease. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read book for everyone
These are things your Doctor will never tell you about the meds they prescribe to you.I know for a fact that some of the side effects mentioned in the book are true because I got them from blood pressure meds.My husband is on the same meds as I am and did not have the same side effects as I did.A must read for everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful, instructive, raises many good questions
Heart Disease: What Your Doctor Won't Tell You provides clear explanations and much food for thought about commonly prescribed meds and risky procedures.Offers advice on nutrition and supplements.Overall, a well-organized, interesting and easy read.Plenty of references.I now understand more about heart disease and have a list of ideas/questions to discuss with my cardiologist.

For the next edition, this book could use another review for typos -- the kind that spell-checkers do not catch.A very minor occasional distraction from an otherwise outstanding book.

Currently, if you click the link to search inside this book, what appears is author's book re Fibromyalgia rather than Heart Disease. So, I'll just quote from the back cover:"Don't even think about starting statin drugs, implementing a low-fat diet, or choosing heart surgery until you've read this book."

4-0 out of 5 stars Very informative

4-0 out of 5 stars Very practical book!
Very oriented to the main topics on every chapter... I wished it would have been edited with coloured pictures.

3-0 out of 5 stars Incomplete
No mention of ME (CFIDS).
Brauwald's larger volume is very inaccurate re ME (CFIDS). Advises exercise which can cause severe worsening of the disease. Conflates ME (CFIDS) and the symptom of chronic fatigue. No mention of Dr. Lerner's studies of cardiomyopathy or Prof. Leonard's publication on cardiac disease mortality in ME. When ME patients die of heart disease, it is, on average, at an age 25 years younger than that of the whole population of people who die of heart disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Appropriately challenging and high-yield question book.
This question book is a great way to review the important points out of the Braunwald's text for those that do not have the time luxury to read the full text. The questions are referenced and state the page from which the question was derived in the text book. The questions are clinically relevant and very useful on a daily basis. As a Cardiology fellow, I recommend it to others in training.

3-0 out of 5 stars Well written, but...
Answers to the questions are well written and informative. The main drawback is that the format of the questions in the book do not reflect board style questions. Therefore, it is a good book for general assessment of knowledge, but not optimal as a board review question book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent review for Recertification
Quite comprehensive for a review. The questions are very appropriate, but most helpful are the thorough answers. Well written and accurate, (unlike several other review texts.)
Comprehensive enough that it is unnecessary to refer to Braunwalds big text book, but useful references are included in the answers.
This is a relatively low cost, useful resource, especially for those of us who suffer through q10 year recert.... ... Read more

Product Description
Operations on the heart and the prevalence of coronary thrombosis are widely discussed in newspapers and magazines; the importance of this book is that by simple and accurate information it enables the layman as well as doctors to understand the disturbances produced by disease and how they may be corrected or avoided. By discussing our methods against the background of their gradual evolution throughout history the reader is enabled to view the advances of the day in their proper perspective and to appreciate our indebtedness to the work of doctors and scientists in past centuries. It is stressed that the magnificent achievements of present-day surgeons must not be allowed to detract from the very important though less spectacular advances which have been made both in the medical treatment and prevention of heart disease. This book describes, in historical sequence, the progress in understanding the heart's action, the diagnosis of its disorders and their treatment from the time of Hippocrates to the second half of the twentieth century. ... Product Description
In the last 35 years, declining deaths from heart disease have translated into 13 million lives saved and extended. Medical treatments and lifestyle changes have dealt successfully with the serious heart problems of Vice President Richard Cheney, talk show host David Letterman, Disney-ABC CEO Michael Eisner, and countless other less famous people. In the past, those with serious heart disease would have died young, but today can live a long and active life. Few families have not benefited from improvements in the way we treat and prevent heart problems. Yet, we often hear that poor lifestyles and the limitations of modern medicine threaten our health and well-being. Although room for improvement always remains, this book demonstrates the contrary - that we have made and continue to make tremendous progress in dealing with heart disease. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Very Important Book!
I gave this book only 4 stars, because, although I liked the content, I found the writing style annoying. Apparently it was written for either small children or stupid people. The first 1 1/2 chapters read like one of those internet ads designed to entice you by telling you that, if you do what we say, it will make you thin, or remove your wrinkles, or whatever; Just click here and give them your credit card number. Well, I already bought the book, so don't spend the first 49 pages of the book teasing me. Tell me up front what you're about. That being said, once the book got rolling (around page 52 or so), it got a lot better. Dr. Lundell's science is dead on. And, he is absolutely right about butter, and animal fat being healthy. Virtually all of the information we have suggesting a role for saturated fat in cancer and heart disease is from studies that included trans fat, such as vegetable shortening, lumped in with the rest of the saturated fat. When only naturally occuring saturated fatslike tropical oils and animal fat are used, the results are not the same. If you want to know more about this, look into Dr. Mary Enig's books. Know Your Fats : The Complete Primer for Understanding the Nutrition of Fats, Oils and Cholesterol or Eat Fat, Lose Fat: The Healthy Alternative to Trans Fats (Yes, I am a Doctor too, but I do not personally know Dr. Enig).
In summary I recommend this book highly. It might be better with a rewrite, but oh well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Long live Dr. Lundell!
I only hope mainstream medical dogma will listen to him and realize the error in their ways.

2-0 out of 5 stars I wanted to like this......
But the info is so basic, I've read it many other places before.Nothing new, and not particularly well written.Sorry.

5-0 out of 5 stars An eye opener
Having had a heartattack in 1989, I have been following the low cholesterol plan for 20 years; i.e. low fat diet, statins, etc. I have always been convinced that my heart attack was due to stress -- I lived a very high stress life, thoughmy friends and I said I managed it beautifully.A book provided by my cardiologist showed me I was managing it terribly.

The book by Dr. Lundell presents convincing evidence that all of the cholesterol talk is virtually irrelevant.I had high cholesterol but it was the stress that got me.My diet was crummy but the problem wasn't the fat -- it was the carbs.

Jim B.

4-0 out of 5 stars Serious work and recommendations by Dr. Lundell (writing style and lack of organization makes it somewhat difficult to read)
Dr. Lundell is a cardiac surgeon and a scientist with 5,000 cardiac surgeries under his belt. He is trying to get a message, (with a lot of science behind it) out there. While this message has been "out there" for some time, he makes a more specific case in regards to cardiac health and disease and brings his personal experience and perspective to it. In short, he says that inflammation is the main cause of cardiac disease and that our focus should be on that. In order to reduce inflammation he says everyone should:

1.) Consume more essential free fatty acids, particularly omega 3 fatty acids. He states that there are 4,500 articles that come to this conclusion about the benefits of omega 3 and that some countries like Japan have taken this seriously. The main type of omega 3 we need is EPA and DHA and both come from fish and marine algae, and he suggests only using high concentration purified fish oil with atl ealst 500 mg EPA and DHA. You can test it by putting it in the freezer. If it gets cloudy it has too many impurities. Dr. Barry Sears says the same thing (and sells it on his website).

2. Add CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) to your diet. The body cannot synthesize it so you need to get it from dairy products and meat. CLA has shown to be: a significant antioxidant, increases energy, improve insulin sensitivity, anti-inflammatory (a natural Cox 2 inhibitor that may increase the synthesis of the anti-inflammatory prostaglandins), reduces the production of cytokines, reduces abdominal fat and preserves muscle mass. It has also been shown to be anti-atherogenic. CLA works better when there is adequate omega 3 in our system and vice versa. The benefit of having both is synergistic.

3. Take a baby aspirin (81 mg) once a day. Studies show benefit against chronic low-grade inflammation (it is a non-steroidal anti-inflammation drug).

4. Consume a lot of anti-oxidants.

5. Lower your sugar and carbohydrate consumption

6. Reduce stress to reduce hormone production by adrenal glands. (Exercise, meditation, reading, taking a drive... whatever works)

7. Eliminate transfats completely, which includes hydrongenated vegetable oil (totally or partially) margarine, commercial baked goods, restaurant fried foods. They interfere with normal metabolism of omega 3. Transfats replace normal fats in the cell wall and interfere with function. Other fats, including animal fats, olive oil and coconut oil are healthful in small quantities.

8. Go on a high protein, low carb, med fat diet, but make sure it is the right fat, like olive oil or coconut oil. He sees sugar and refined carbs as a large cause of inflammation.

9. Lose weight if you need to, quit if you are smoking.

10. Exercise daily. Start slow and don't stop.

11. He recommends lots of vegetables, fruit and protein (meat and dairy is fine) but his emphasis is on avoiding the carbohydrates and the wrong fats.

This advice is for everyone, not just people with coronary disease. Everyone has damage already.

He recommends health screening options so that you know your status, get motivated and stay motivated:

1. Test your CRP (C-reactive protein) The lowest risk is 1.0 or below. Above 3.0 and you are in sig. risk category for coronary disease. You can ask your doctor to measure it. Soon it will become standard because it is a better predictor than LDL.

2. Test your homocysteine levels. High leveles indicate low levels of critical B vitamins esp. B12 adn B9 (folic acid). A lot of vegetarians are low in B12; this could be a bigger risk factor than previously realized.

3. Test your omega 3 index, which measures the amount of omega 3 in the cell walls of your red blood cells. Dr. Lundell offers for you to contact him at his website and he will arrange for it for you as it is not common yet.

4. Have a stress echo and stress nuclear scan performed. You can request these tests.

5. Get a CT or MRI scan of your coronary arteries (MRI is better).

6. Have a carotid ultrasound performed. It is also a surrogate marker for coronary disease. It measures the thickness of your artery wall and the ratio of the intima to the media. It is referred to as CIMT (carotid intimal to medial thickness).

It was a mistake to present this book with the paid writer playing the curmudgeon arguing with Dr. Lundell throughout... I think it got in the way of the material. In my opinion, this book should have been put together with a professional writing style, like most books on disease are nowadays and it should have been organized... it doesn't have an index and takes forever to find something or find if something is missing. Actually, what seemed to be missing was a clear framework or list of what dietary recommendations Dr. Lundell has in mind. He talks about diet, but it is scattered here and there and I had to go over and over it to pick up his points on diet to make sure I understood him.

I don't know if I missed it but I don't think there was anything about CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) supplements. He talked aboutthe importance of CLA and that with a diet of dairy and meat we do get CLA, but he didn't say anything about supplementation. That would be important for vegetarians and vegans. There has been some research on high inflammation in vegetarians, which would have helped to make his case. Actually, it would depend on what they actually ate... probably most vegetarians are on a high-carb low-protein diet (even if they don't think about that way); very few are on a low-carb diet because that would be another restriction of a restricted choice diet... and it would be difficult to be on a vegetarian high-protein diet (that would probably entail consuming 1 1/2 12-ounce blocks of tofu or more per day... which would total 75 gm of protein). I would have been interested in Dr. Lundell's opinions and I believe it would be extremely relevant as a lot of people are leaning towards vegetarianism nowadays for a lot of reasons. As I mentioned before, vegetarians are often B12 deficient which he mentions as another risk in regards to cardiovascular health.

It would have been interesting to know Dr. Lundell's opinion suggested supplements for people with heart disease recommended by Dr. Sinatra, a cardiologist (not a cardiac surgeon).

I think his observations and synthesis of medicine and science in regards to cardiac health and disease are pretty profound and should be taken seriously.

Biomarkers in Heart Disease is the first title in the AHA Clinical Series and is aimed at meeting the needs of clinicians, providing cardiologists, internists, emergency physicians, laboratorians, and other healthcare providers with a clear understanding of the role of biomarkers in contemporary cardiovascular medicine.

The book covers both the strengths and pitfalls of currently available markers, and provides information on the most promising biomarkers that are likely to impact practice in the next few years. It is divided into four parts, organized around clinical scenarios rather than individual biomarkers.

This book will help the practicing physician decide which biomarkers to measure, when to measure them, how to interpret the results and how to make decisions based on the test result. ... Read more

Product Description
It's hard to believe you're dying when you feel fit and fine...but millions of Americans are harboring unaware a condition that can rob them or kill them outright--hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, the most common form of heart disease. Even when hypertension is diagnosed, treatment is usually based on drugs, most with dismal side effects, expensive, and of limited usefulness.

Really effective treatment of hypertension calls for getting at the cause--which, Dr. Eric Braverman has found, often relates to poor diet, elevated cholesterol, excess weight, stress, and biochemical imbalances. With Dr. Braverman's 30- to 90-day program, patients have lowered their blood pressure and, in some case, even reversed the course of existing heart disease.

Based on extensive research and long clinical experience, Dr. Braverman's program can open the way to the longer and better-enjoyed life that high blood pressure and heart disease are silently waiting to steal from us. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
As someone who has suffered from hypertension since I was 26 years old, had an adrenalectomy to correct a potassium imbalance that did not correct my hypertension, I am a believer that there must be natural ways to cure disease. This book repeated some of the other schools of though about curing hypertension naturally, but also shared Dr. Braverman's natural supplementation that he uses at his clinic.I took this book to my Internist who is familiar with my struggle to control my hypertension, and I asked her to read the book and come up with a supplementation protocol for me.My doctor reported that she enjoyed the book as it had reminded her of some of the nutrition themes she had learned in medical school. We worked together on a supplementation for my treatment of hypertension.I wish I could afford to go to Dr. Braverman's clinic in New York, but until then I will follow the guidelines on eating, exercise and natural supplementation in this book.I have not yet weaned myself off of hypertension medication, but I have been able to resist adding more medication, which does not make me better, but only more dependent on chemicals to cure disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great advice for heart disease

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommend this for everyone
This book gives so much information that is easy to understand and easy to put to use in your life. Even if someone doesn't have heart disease this would still be a healthy way to eat and live your life. The recipes are very tasty and easy to make. Drugs certainly are not the only answer in reducing cholesterol or high blood pressure. This book has helped us in just the first month of using it.

4-0 out of 5 stars interesting!
This is an interesting book, and hard to believe.

It could use more case histories.Surely, they are available. Also, the case histories included do not seem to follow the supplement program recommended. The reasons for such deviations, when not obvious, could be detailed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Why Drugs are Not the Answer to Heart Disease
What a wonderful idea Dr. Braverman promises - "REVERSE HEART DISEASE, Naturally" with his "30- to 90-Day No-More hypertension and Heart Disease Program" in 198 pages. Who is Eric Braverman? As founder and Director of PATH Medical (the Place for achieving Total Health) in New York City he's "considered one of America's most innovative physicians" according to his publisher Basic Health.

Updating his 1996 research by adding daughter Dasha Braverman's RAINBOW DIET (choosing the right fresh colorful fruits and vegetables) the results to be expected are a "Drug-free, robust life" in one year.

So you ask - How can you do it? Well, Braverman says you can:

Lower blood pressure to 120/80 - 135/85.
Triglycerides and cholesterol to below 200 and increase HDL to above 50.
Discontinue all beta-and alpha blockers, calcium channel blockers, ACE inhibitors.

Just replace with his Special Formula's number 1 to 14.

Then, Reduce Stress with Cranial Electric Stimulation (CES) by sending gentle electrical signals to the vagus nerve in your brain with his RELAX-MATE, a TENS - a transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation unit, for 15-60 minutes a day to release GABA and acetylcholine in your brain because it's biofeedback like training for self control and peace of mind.

All that can help you to "break addictive food habits and destructive behaviors". Dr. Braverman defines depression "as anger turned inward" and suggests emotions "contribute to blockages in the large vessels supplying blood to the brain." New science that`s easy to follow and easy to use.

With this book anyone ought to be able to "Reverse Heart Disease -Naturally!"

jointly with the doctor as to the treatment recommended.
