5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best herb books!
This is one of the best herb books I have read! I wasn't expecting much of it due to the title. But so many people raved about it being for more than just kids, so I purchased it.I am glad I did.

Yes, it is written with children in mind; therefore, it is written in simple, easy to understand terms. But the book covers many herbs and their many uses.It gives simple recipies for salves, tinctures, lozenges, etc.

I highly recommend this book for both children and adults. It will be especially useful for any beginning herbalist!

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST herb book overall
I have about 100 books on herbs in my personal library.
I gave this kids' version to my 5 year old son for a gift and we are in LOVE with it like no other.
There are stories, facts, lessons, potions and recipes, identifiers and Mr. Greenleaf who is a loveable Gnome who leads you through this lush garden of text and illustrations.
BRAVO to this author, someone got it RIGHT!

Great for Pagan children.

5-0 out of 5 stars A kids herbal book
This book is brilliant. Not only is it written in a way a 9 year old can understand and follow, it's also presented well for adults.Full of great information, recipes and activities - packed with information. We've already baked the fantastic ginger cookies and enjoyed the experience of lemon balm tea together.Definitely recommended for kids starting on their herbal journey.

5-0 out of 5 stars Such a cool book!
I bought this one because we homeschool and my son is really into plants and such.I have to agree with the other mom who said that the kids had to wrestle it away from her! The first couple of things we found that was really fun are recipes for homemade rootbeer and marshmallows. We are totally going to try these. To be honest, we haven't gotten that far into it yet, but I have flipped through it and found so many interesting things that I can't wait to dive back into it this week with my son!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book but wish more herbs were listed
This is a good book and my son and I both enjoyed the fairy tale-like stories in each chapter about how the herbs came to be known for their healing qualities. There are a lot of recipes and activities for each herb but it's not what I personally was looking for. I was hoping there would be more different kinds of herbs listed and what they are used for. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Valuable information about 10 popular herbs
The Green Guide to Herb Gardening is a very wonderful book that takes ten of the most popular herbs and explores them fully; from planting, care and nurturing of these plants to the harvesting, storage and culinary uses. There are some wonderful recipes for herbs here and I look forward to using some of them. This book covers it all. A must have primer for any beginner or anyone who who has never grown anything.
But what makes this book special is that it doesn't stop there. This book also covers the herb history, magic and folklore of these ten herbs, being basil, calendula, chamomile, chives, garlic, lemon balm, mint, oregano, parsley and thyme. Then Ms. Harding adds herbal teas, aromatic and ornamental uses and some simple magical uses. This now makes this book a very useful handbook worth owning by anyone.
Easy to read and follow, Ms. Harding explains everything fully and presents the material in a well organized and easy to follow format. This book is well researched, and a fountain of information on these herbs. I am hoping she plans to do another book on 10 more herbs, as I found this one a valuable aid to be used.

5-0 out of 5 stars A guide for learning to grow herbs
I didn't know much about growing herbs before purchasing this book, but I wanted to learn to use more herbs in my cooking.I use this book primarily as a reference when I have a question about when to plant, when to prune, etc.I haven't tried any recipes and I can only hope that one day I'll plant some of the beautiful herb gardens pictured in this colorful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great pick for the edible gardener
I'm a master gardener, and I volunteer for the Speakers' Bureau of my local Master Gardeners' Association. Lately we've been getting more requests for talks on edible gardening. Herb gardening is a logical first step in that direction, because herbs are the least demanding of the edible crops and because most herbs are attractive enough to integrate into an existing ornamental garden.

In researching a recent talk on herb gardening, I came across Creasy's book at the library. It's engagingly written and quite complete. It includes clear, step-by-step instructions for planning and installing an herb garden; an encyclopedia of herbs with a photo and cultural information for each one; a collection of delicious recipes, from simple to sophisticated; and lists of additional resources.

I ended up taking the book with me to my talk and recommending it to the audience. I also bought a gift copy for one of my daughters to use in planning her new patio garden. And as I write this, I'm thinking I really must buy another copy for myself!

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful photos, useful information
This is not an indepth book, but a good overview of how to grow, how to prepare and special notes on different herbs as well as arrangement of them in a garden that is beautiful as well as functional. The use of focal points truly makes it a decorative showpiece that many wouldn't think is feeding you! Once getting through the arranging and how to grow sections there's 'recipes' for herbal blends, dried herbs, herbal vinegars, herb butter, herbed cream, liquors as well as recipes for the table - some simple some easily elegant for those who grow their own food at home. While it's fair to note this is an overview - the photos are inspiring and the information concise. It's sufficient to order and get moving on doing an herb garden. The photos bely the many hours and effort to grow beautiful garden areas but the author writes from having *done* this and shows photos from her own garden areas. An explosion of color for the eye as well as treats in the home. Take note and don't skim on things like "I included the showy but decidedly not edible, tall graceful foxgloves and blue star creeper in between the boards" (from a caption of one of the photos). Very nice book - I've bought two in this series and will continue to add others if they deliver as this does.

5-0 out of 5 stars For The Person Who Wants to Cook with Herbs
There are many books available to spend time on all the varying uses for herbs (gardens, medicine, etc.) and nothing wrong with that. But for those of us who are into herbs for the sole purpose of the culinary zest they so wonderfully provide, this is significant resource in a small, well done fashion.

Color photos, herb by herb info, as well as recipes and aids with sources, insect and disease problems, this is valuable aid to us herb growers for the table.

From planning to preparing to planting to cultivating to problem cures to harvesting to recipe utilization, this is solid 105 pages of herb wisdom.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of pretty photos......
What's not to like about Rosalind Creasy's garden books? Creasy is an advocate of eating your garden. For years, I went back and forth - Do I grow flowers? Do I grow vegetables?Creasy says you can grow both and she shows you how.Her books are not filled with pages and pages of tedious text on preparing soil, planting, watering weeding harvesting.Instead, she includes several photos of her hired hands doing all that tiresome stuff while she takes pages of photos of plants (a small "encyclopedia") and receipes (a small cook book).

I was inspired by Creasy to try peppers in pots this past summer, and the Goddess must have smiled because all the plants behaved well and furnished a bumper crop of hot peppers for my pepper-loving Senegal parrot. So, for the first time ever -inspired by Creasy -I tried lavender in a clay pot and it worked well. Usually, my lavender plants mold from underneath because although the summers in the Washington DC area are usually hot, they are not dry like those in Provence where lavender excells. Clay pots are a good idea because the lavender plant sits above the ground away from the damp and any moisture falling from a watering can or the sky wicks away quickly. I have grown other herbs in pots - parsley, scented geraniums, basil, but never tried lavender until this year. I also grew several kinds of mint plants in both clay pots and the kind with a water well underneath, which is the only way to grow them as they are so invasive.

I love Creasy's EDIBLE HERB GARDEN because in my estimation a picture is worth a thousand words, and as an experienced gardener, I don't need a lot of instruction. Creasy includes plenty of pictures that are useful to me because they give me design ideas. I can look at a garden photo, recognize plants and judge how much work is involved in realizing the scene depicted. Creasy doesn't really advise you concerning the amount of work involved to maintain a scene. She also grown herbs in a California climate.

I've used other sources to help me learn how to grow herbs (Rodale in particular), and I've used Creasy's book to discover new and beautiful ideas for displaying culinary herbs in the perennial garden, as bedding plants or in pots.

Creasy offers nifty vinegar, oil, and tea recipes using culinary herbs as well as items such as barbecued veggies on Rosemary skewers. Collect her series, but be warned, you will need a good "how to" book or your own personal gardener to achieve her results. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Floridians
It's great for south Florida home herb growers especially since our climate and growing season is so different from most reference books.

5-0 out of 5 stars a keeper
Normally I want to see a garden book have colorful pictures using the plant in the landscape. Some simple black and white drawings are shown. That is the only negative I can think of but this guide is so good and loaded with so much great information that I am giving it five stars.

It lists the pros and cons of growing herbs and spices in north, central and south Florida, remembering that the zones are different. It makes a difference!Besides the common name it lists the botanical name of the plants. Why do you want to know this?Because when you want to buy tarragon are you getting true French tarragon or Mexican tarragon? They are very different plants and enjoy different climates. To simplify matters a wonderful cross reference of common and botanical names is found at the back.

A mail-order and resource directory, places to visit, local herb societies and plants the attract butterflies and hummingbirds are among some the topics you'll read about.Herbs that do well indoors or can be used as ground covers are listed. Necessary warnings on using the plant medicinally is found at the end of some descriptions; a big plus since I sometimes think we forget that not every herb is made to be consumed.

I found this wonderful book at my local library while trying to find something to read on herb growing.Floridians have to tackle heat and humidity for a good portion of the year which can cause many plants to succumb. It is definitely not the same as growing herbs up north or out west. So, whether you are an experienced gardener or someone who has just moved here, this book is a keeper.I am going to put it on my wish list.

There are two kinds of people, those who do the work and those who take the credit. Try to be in the first group; there is less competition there.-Indira Gandhi

2-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book but not what I wanted
This is an exceptionally beautiful book with lovely illustrations of all the various herbs. Chapter titles are: A modern herbal, Cooking with herbs and spices, Household herbs and spices, Cosmetic herbs and, finally, Herbs for health.

But the book was not quite what I had envisaged, in fact not at all, the main interest I have in herbs being for health purposes. And in the section on herbs for health the author states that since partaking of herbal medicine can be dangerous, "the recipes that follow are all of a simple and domestic nature, being mild remedies for sore throats,'flu, bowel troubles, indigestion and so on". These are not areas that I need help with, my ailments being of a more serious nature.

I was thus somewhat disappointed with this book and can only give it 2 stars, this judgement being completely subjective of course. On the positive side, I can state that the book contains a good recipe for an antiseptic garlic dressing, suggestions for soothing the sites of insect bites together with instructions for dealing with warts, corns and chilblains. In fact the whole section on herbs for health is quite useful and instructive, just not so interesting to me personally.

This may be a valuable book for those primarily interested in the horticultural aspect of herbs and spices and how to identify these plants. The section on cooking with herbs and spices may also be interesting to many.

5-0 out of 5 stars Herbs for life
Excellent review of herbs, herb gardens and their application to every aspect of life from food recipes to skin care recipes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for indentifcation and growing
This book is very useful for people who want to grow herbs and know what they are used for.The first section of the book lists all the herbs alphabetically by latin name. There is a drawing of the plant along with a description of what it's used for and how to grow it.Since the author is British all the growing information relates to that country and has to be reinterpreted for the U.S.Take care if the book says will over winter etc. (like Rosemary which is a shrub in the UK but won't survive in the northern states). There is also a section on poisonous herbs so you know what to avoid or take care with.
The next section is a small overview of growing herbs in your garden which again has to be reinterpreted but is good general information.
There is a nice section on cooking with herbs, it's not comprehensive and many other books which deal specifically with cooking with give more information but it's a good starter. It also has a section on making herb drinks including wines and beers which is interesting.
It then goes on to detail how to explain how to use herbs in the home, making candles, pot pourri, using herbs to clean with and making fabric dyes.Lastly there is a section on cosmetic use for herbs and information on how to make infusions, decoctions and macerations.Lots of recipes for bath waters, skin and hair care. The final section on health is very short and not very comprehensive. However as an overall book it's very good.I especially like the herbal listings at the front of the book and the home herbs section the rest is just a bonus for me.
As an overall informative book on herbs especially if you want to identify and grow them it's excellent. If you want a cookery book or a herb health book this won't help that much. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars It's a nice book, but...
It would have been improved greately by the use of time quantifiers. "Traditionally" could mean anywhere from the birth of the Polish nation right through to the day before yesterday. There is a lot of nice information for people who don't mind when exactly "traditionally" was, but I was hoping to find useful information for SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) purposes. I really want to know whether the described habits stem from the Middle Ages or the 19th century, and since I don't read Polish, I can't follow the paper trail back through the bibliography.

4-0 out of 5 stars Text good, pictures not
It's a useful text but the illustrations are mainly decorative, not useful for identifying plants.

5-0 out of 5 stars "A lovely garden was the spirit of the housewife"
In this charming book, Sophie Hodorowicz Knab answers all of the questions that anyone might have about the use of herbs in Poland. She starts by informingus about an archaeological site that dates back to 550-400 BC. The site was discovered in the Bydgoszcz province in1931.It was determinedthat the early inhabitants grew several types of grain and used herbs in medicinal preparations andfor flavoring foods.

The author also tells us how herbs were used inthe pre-Christian era and how those practices were integrated into the Christian celebrations that came later. Due to the geographic location of Poland, many travelers following the trade routes passed through her borders and introduced exotic new plants to the country.

There's an abundance of data offered about the herbal gardens in the monasteries. Those gardens were in many ways the most advanced and useful because the monks had links with their fellow orders from all over Europe. Therefore, the different formulas for herbal medicines were passed back and forth between the monasteries.

Palace gardens are also discussed. Since the royal families made marriage alliances with neighboring countries, the spouses often brought different plants and trees with them to be planted in their new home. Italian style gardens and vegetables such as tomatoes and cauliflower were introduced by Queen Bona who was born in Italy.

I particularly liked the information given about the cottage gardens. We're told "that a lovely garden was the spirit of the housewife." These kitchen gardens were much simpler than their formal counterparts. The lady of the house would grow the herbs that she liked best. "There was marjoram for sausage, dill for pickling, and parsley, sage and fennel for enhancing soups and stews." The illustrations in this part of the book intrigued me, and I really enjoyed the folk-style drawings. I thought that the different types of bee skeps were very unique. Sugar was a luxury and the common people kept bees so that they would have honey to use as a sweetener.

Finally, even theglossary of herbs and flowers presented some absorbing and entertaining passages. The customary usage for the various plants are offered and a few recipes and remedies are also included. The names of the plants are given in English, Latin and Polish. There's even a recipe for Benedictine which sounds very intriguing!

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and recommend it to anyone wanting to learn about Poland. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Herbs: Growing and Using the Plants of Romance
This book has lots of great pictures of different herbs. Very useful info for not only growing the herbs but also how to use them in everyday living!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for the novice and experienced alike.
Let me put it this way - I loaned it out to a couple of neighbors and now I am online buying them a copy. First of all it is put together in an easy to understand context. The information can be found in a quick manner. The information that is provided is exactly what we were looking for.It tells about the herb, a little history, how to plant it, any variations that are available, and finally how to use it effectively. So many times I would have to be looking at 3 books to get just such information. The recipes are very useful too. It's great to go to the nursery now - pick out an herb that isn't oregano, basil, parsley, etc. and know exactly how I am going to effectivley use it. This book gave me so many ideas beyond adding the herb to salads or teas.

4-0 out of 5 stars The authors love affair with herbs has infused all the pages
Authors, Bill and Sylvia Varney's herb farm is in the Hill Country of West Texas in a town called Fredericksburg.Right from the beginning of their book you're aware that the knowledge they pass on to the reader is theresult of on-the-job research and information they learned through trialand error while working on their farm. That to me is the best kind ofinformation. As I read this book I was aware that their love affair withherbs had infused all of the pages. This is not just a cut and driedencyclopedia of the usual culinary herbs everyone has heard about, butrather a book written lovingly by two people who have deep feeling aboutherbs and their uses.In addition to the usual culinary herbs there arealso descriptions of medicinal and cosmetic herbs, information on usingherbs to decorate your life, and ways to add them to your landscape. Inthe Gallery of Herbs section the information for each herb supplies alittle history, planting and care, and harvesting and uses.A nice touchin this section is the side-bars with additional information such asrecipes, folklore, and different quotes such as "He who bears chiveson his breath is safe from being kissed to death" by Martise, a Romanpoet.Too often a new gardener just jumps in and decides one day to plantan herb garden and the next day puts the plants in the ground. It's easyto forget that although everyone says herbs are easy to grow, there areimportant tasks that come before the planting. The sections 'Framework fora Garden' and 'Putting Down Roots', will ensure your success when plantingyour new garden and is what makes this book great for beginners.Besidesthe side-bar recipes there is also a section called 'Herbal How-to Recipes'to help you use your harvest in both the kitchen and bath and to decorateyour home.At the beginning and end of this book are two handy sectionsthat are always an asset, the 'Glossary' and 'Sources and Resources'.Theexceptional photography throughout the book might lead you to keep it onyour coffee table for everyone to enjoy; but the soft cover says to me thatthis is a manual to be used. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource for anyone interested in herbs
This book is a definite must have for anyone interested in herbs."Encyclopedia of Herbs and Their Uses" contains color photos of all entries (or at least all of the ones I have looked up so far), and also lists the different uses of each herb.I thought the layout of the book was very well planned, and I found that the book, in general, was very easy to use. This book meets my needs perfectly.
