5-0 out of 5 stars I'd like to see more books written by this guy!!
I really like this book, I wish he'd do a book focusing on women's reproductive issues. He's thourogh and explains things well. I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the best books on herbalism available
The letters "MD" on the cover of a book about 'alternative' medicine are always reassuring. Weiss combines the thoroughness and concern for verifiability one would expect from someone trained in modern medicinewith a refreshing sensitivity to its limits and to the contribution thatmore traditional types of medicine can offer.

The bulk of the book isdevoted to detailed examinations of systems of the body, characteristicdiseases, and herbs used in their treatment. Chapter subjects include: thecardiovascular system, the urinary tract, rheumatic conditions, the nervoussystem, gynaecological conditions, cancer, and skin diseases.

In allthese chapters, Weiss "limits himself to a very few remedies that havebeen shown to be really effective" and goes into each herb in detail, explaining how its chemistry and use differ from those of other, relatedherbs. Thus, the 100-page chapter on the digestive system starts with afull, properly-referenced, 14-page section on "acute stomachconditions". This is devoted almost entirely to three herbs:chamomile, peppermint, and balm (melissa). The subsection on chamomiletells us where chamomile grows and how to identify it, and then details thedifferent varieties. The author summarises past research into the chemicalmake-up of chamomile and its use in medicine, and concludes with dosagedetails, even including advice to doctors on how to write theirprescriptions. He then gives the same treatment to the other herbs, andproceeds to explain when we should use chamomile and when peppermint ormelissa; when we should combine one of these with another herb; whether thetea is best or a tincture or standardized herbal extract or even essentialoil; and so on.

In an age when information arranged in bite-sized piecesis the norm and coffee-table books with numerous colour photos abound, theplainness of this book is one of its charms. And, ultimately, it actuallymakes it easier to read. With many books available now, the reader has tojump around from section to section, reading profiles of individual herbs, introductions to body systems, indices of complaints, etc, and still notreally know what the best remedy is or why a particular combination ofherbs was chosen in preference to another. With Weiss, if you've got adigestive problem, you read the relevant chapter (or section if you've notime) and you know everything you need.

The author prefers to refer toherbal medicine as 'phytotherapy'. He is concerned to distinguish'scientific phytotherapy', on the one hand from folk medicine and on theother from orthodox medicine. The former suffers from "the vast andoften highly imaginative range of indications...[often] with no scientificfoundation at all". The latter tends to "recognize only thosephytotherapeutic agents...which can be statistically confirmed [and] givespreference to fast-acting powerful drugs". An example of his approachcomes in the section mentioned above on chamomile, where he gives a tableof its chemical constituents and their medicinal effect, while noting that"it is the sum of all the constituents that produces the medicinalaction...we do best to use the whole plant drug".

One criticism:While I applaud Weiss's decision to focus on a small number of herbs, oneproblem with his approach is what to do if you can't obtain his favorites. While the translator sometimes slips in helpful comments for Britishreaders, some may have problems getting hold of Eau de Melisse des Carmes and some of the more obscure herbs mentioned. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars All Wishes come true
My whole ambition started from wishes on Dandelions and I have loved them all my life, I thought them to be the most beautiful flower because they have a wish ball. My wish come true as an adult to have my own business, at the time I didn't know I would be an Herbalist, but I am. In honor of my favorite I named my business Dandelion and I bought this book because I was certain that all I knew about Dandelion's and their incrediable ability to heal would be in it. Guess what?...It was and more. Brigette Mars has not put this book back into reprint, so it is worth a lot more money than when it was originally sold and I had to pay a lot for my copy. It is a rare and collectable book not to mention all the information within the pages. I treasure this book on a knowledge and sincere level and you could buy it off of me. A great book, quick read and ready to unshelf for sharing with anyone young and old. They'll give you a corky look at first and then they too will be enlightened and surprised. Great Book! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Major resource for ayurvedic herbs
If you're looking for a textbook on ayurvedic herbs, here it is.

I've been interested in ayurvedic herbs but did not find anything with scientific references.Anecdotal reports are not enough.

A few examples:

Did you know the ficus tree is considered holy and is used for medicine?

Amla, which is a component of the formula "triphala" has been proven to dramatically lower cholesterol, triglycerides, phospholipids and low density lipoproteins by 82%, 66% 77% and 90% respectively.

REGRESSION OF AORTIC PLAQUES was observed. To put it plainly, when your arteries are clogged, this herb will help unclog them.

I do a lot of research on heart disease had never heard of this.

I know pseudoginseng, which is a Chinese herb, will do the same thing, but I did not know about Amla.

5-0 out of 5 stars excelent book!
I bought this books when it was first released at a medical college bookstore and paid a lot for it.It's one of the best investments in a book that I ever made.
This book gives an excellent view of herb to herb interactions; as well as drug to herb interactions. If you or someone you know is on prescriptive medication check this out before suggesting herbs or even other vitamins. It also includes info on herbs that you don't normally see. The authors don't downplay the importance of using herbs, but how to use them safely.

It is well worth any money you pay for it and I really think you will like this book.I use this book constantly as I am an herbalist and don't want to give out wrong info to people.

5-0 out of 5 stars The "Complete Guide To Safe Herbs" is "on call" 24/7!
It seems it's always about 2:00 a.m. on a weekend that a family member suddenly awakens with a common ailment that nevertheless requires Dr. Mom to "do something" now! The "Complete Guide To Safe Herbs" provides indispensable knowledge needed to prepare for these times and others - what to have on hand, and then explains how to use the Creator's all natural "pharmacy."

Additionally, this marvelous volume provides descriptions of herbs, "Don't mix with," "Do take with," and "Keep in mind" comprehensive sections. There are "Herbs for special cases," "Buyer beware," "Drug-herb interactions" and potential interactions, plus a host of other types of hard-to-find but easily understood info, and all in one place! (Dr. Meletis has done the extensive research for us.) Of course, it also includes an essential, inclusive index.

Also importantly, the book's scientifically sound truths lay to rest some perhaps unsafe "old wives' tales" and factoids.

I treasure my gift copy of this gorgeous, impressive hardback. It is appropriate for the young as well as the young at heart. Lovely for display in any room, "Complete Guide To Safe Herbs" makes learning about herbs a joy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
With Allopathic medicine (regular medicine) proving to be miraculous in some situations. At the same time in other situations its proving to be too strong, too much and causing too many side effects. Welcome in herbal medicine as kind of a similar but more sensitive way to treat many of the same problems.

Welcome in a book like this which keeps it simple. Yes simple, yet has very valuable information about herbs and drug interactions and even talks about which herbs are safer than others. A fantastic book to have on hand if you are interested in the wonderful world of herbal medicine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Demystify the herb world
I'm so pleased to tell readers that this book was so pleasurable to read that I read it cover to cover the day it arrived.I started on an herb regiment four months ago (thanks to webmd.com), much to the dismay of my rheumatologist and cardiologist as I was already on fifteen prescription pills a day. With the help of the herbs I've been able to cut those pills in half. But I, too, was concerned about my ignorance as to the possible incompatibility of my newly found herbs with my doctor's advice and pills. Thanks to this book, we can all rest assured that I'm not messing with a dangerous mixture.Absolutely one hundred percent of my prescriptions were listed in the book and found to be safe with the herbs I'm now taking daily. The book is beautifully written with colorful pictures and easy-to cross-reference drugs, herbs, foods, etc. and their interactions with one another. At the end, a bonus that I had not expected: a long list of ailments offered to the reader who may have he or she's own agenda for wanting to try an alternative path to wellness. The mystery of these age-old remedies, that our ancestors probably used, is quickly unraveled in a written format simple enough for a child to understand. And, if I'm not mistaken, the author never once promised to cure cancer, etc. That would have been a giant signal to me that I was dealing with a quack. It is what it is, a guide to herbal usage. It's my new favorite book!P.S.Thank you to the previous on-line critics who lead me through the maze of self-help books to this very special one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Beautiful

Readers may find the term herbal drugstore an oxymoron. But just as conventional drugstores carry prescription drugs and products for skin care, hair care, and even pet care, hundreds of manufacturers are now distributing herbal remedies and treatments for these same ailments and needs. "And just as a conventional drugstore can be a bewildering place, competing herbal products can leave you confused as to what to buy," according to authors Linda B. White, M.D. (Kids, Herbs, Health: A Parents' Guide to Natural Remedies) and Steven Foster (101 Medicinal Herbs: An Illustrated Guide). "We created this book to be your guide to an ever-growing herbal marketplace."

They deliver even more than they promise. This is one of the most comprehensive and well-written herbal guidebooks available. The opening pages are devoted to important discussions about herb usage, including safety tips (such as never giving herbs to children younger than 2 years old without your doctor's approval), dosage information, and how to make your own herbal remedies. It has a quick-glance chart of familiar ailments, along with a listing of commonly used drugs and herbal alternatives. (For instance, according to the chart, bladder infections are routinely treated with antibiotics, but numerous herbal remedies exist, including bearberry, cranberry, goldenseal, goldenrod, and Oregon grape root.)

The meat of the book, however, is devoted to an alphabetized listing of ailments as well as extensive discussions of herbal remedies, dosages, and ongoing treatments. For example, under "sinus infection," readers will find a list of symptoms, a sympathetic write-up about the causes and different kinds of infections, and a list of numerous herbs and treatments, from echinacea to the Chinese herb astragalus. Entries address minor ailments such as a hangover to serious diseases like diabetes and Parkinson's disease. The book closes with a thorough index and a listing of manufacturers that sell herbs. Without a doubt, this is the book for treating common ailments with herbs. Anyone interested in exploring alternatives to prescription drugs will find safe and sound advice within these informative pages. --Gail Hudson ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Comprehensive for One Book
I enjoyed this book and think it has a lot of useful info.I do tend to cross reference herbal books with other herbal books.I also check online for some sources as herbs can go out of favor particularly as new prescriptions meds come out and there are interactions.Natural doesn't always mean safe or good, particularly in combination with other vitamins, supplements or prescriptions.Important to do your homework.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Herbal Drugstore book
I had this book and my sister in law always grabbed it to read after she went to bed. I didn't want to give mine up so I ordered one for her. Hers is already dog earred from the many readings. It is full of information and interesting remedies such as peppermint oil can help keep gallstone blockage from occuring and may dissolve gallstones by taking an enteric coating-coated capsule two times per day between meals (0.2 - 0.4 milliliter). An enteric coating is one that passes through the stomach's digestive fluids intact to deliver its healing properties lower in the digestive tract. One of many studies. I have not tried any of them yet, but I think it's a great book to have on hand for non life threatening conditions in a world of too many man made drugs being taken and prescribed, in my opinion. Why not try natural when we can. It is safer and cheaper! I would recommend this book. Nice gift too!

The book is very informative. There is plenty of information about how widespread the virus of hepatitis is, what types there are, how small it is etc. Basically, the book presents some good information about HCV, which can be useful.

Furthermore, the author discusses herbs and some foods that promote healthy liver function and healthy immune system.

Buhner claims that he contracted hepatitis c and got very sick and then he cured himself by taking some of the herbs he talks about in his book. He also provides two types of protocols that people may want to follow.
However, there's no any information about the author himself, when he contracted it, how long it took him to recover, what type of hepatitis C or any blood test results whatsoever. Personally, I find highly suspicious the fact that the author claims that was suffering from such a difficult disease, from which he recovered, but does not talk about his experience.

Also the book suggest a place where one can buy the herbs and the supplements. People are very nice at that place but they do not provide any useful information when it comes to the protocols.

I did a research online and could not find any interview with Buhner about hepatitis. I could not find any feedback by people who tried that protocol, nothing! I could not find any of Buhner's contact information either, not even an email. The only thing that I actually found were some testimonials on the website selling the herbal protocols. But after updating the site they were gone.

I, myself, have hepatitis c and tried his herbal protocol #2 for over two months and followed exactly what the book said. However, I stopped because instead of getting better it thinned and dried my skin and gave it some yellowish color, some of the supplements like N.A.C. made me extra tired and on top of that I got bigger dark circles under my eyes that don't go away even after I stopped the protocol. During that time i was feeling out of it most of the time and lost my appetite and had this feeling of fullness in my stomach and respectively lost a lot of weight. It's been a while since I stopped and overall I think that the protocol exacerbated my condition rather than helped me.

What I found the most helpful was the list of symptoms and corresponding herbs that alleviate those symptoms.

I got very ambiguous results from that protocol. Perhaps some people may get better ones.

This book does not provide any usefulfollow up option for the treatment it provides!

5-0 out of 5 stars Herbs for Hepatitis C and the Liver
This is an essential book for Hep C.I have used the herbal protocol for 8 months and brought my viral load down to 69,000 and it is still dropping. Before I read this book, I had almost convinced myself that traditional treatment was the only way, even with its horrible side effects. Now, I am so glad that I found this book, contacted Dry Creek Herb Farm (referenced in the book) and started my daily herb treatments. The only side effect of the herb is that they don't taste very good, but with the results I have had they are starting to taste pretty good. The cost is very affordable also.Thank you Stephen Harrod Buhrner and Dry Creek Herb Farm.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent but some basic issues glossed over
Hakim G. M. Chishtis' book on traditional Greek-Arabic medicine is excellent. Other reviews have underscored its merits. This reviewer has already benefitted from applying e.g. the detoxication diet and some of the other dietetic information.

Hakim Chishti is remarkably broad-minded and conciliatory in his approach. Even his detoxication diet is quite broad compared to several other like-named regimes. He acknowledges the usefulness of allopathic medicine in several areas.

Of particular benefit to this reviewer are the clear presentations of the basic vocabulary and underlying principles of the Greek-Arabic medicine that was practised in Europe until into the 20th century and was the leading school until the 19th.

Although Hakim Chishti does not stress this, it is clear from his text that the fundamental ideas of Unani-Tibb, e.g. the four elements, the four qualities and the four humours, are pure archetypes, not specific physical substances. The latter merely reflect and manifest the former.

Perhaps an editor's error, Table 5, mentioned at the bottom of page 80, to provide the Tibb and Chinese terminologies for pulse diagnosis, is missing from the book. The Table 5 on page 40, Breath and Emotions, has a different subject.

In this reviewer's humble opinion, Hakim Chishti glosses over some basic issues pertaining to the export of Unani-Tibb to northern climatic zones in which, for example, many of the food and medicinal plants used in Indian Unani-Tibb simply do not grow north of about 45 degrees, e.g. rice. The applicability of substantial parts of the practice to northern or comparable cool climatic zones in the southern hemisphere are thus subject to some reservation.

For example, Hakim Chishti highly recommends basmati rice produced in the Indian subcontinent. He glosses over both the climate compatibility and the ecological (petroleum consumption for heavy weight food staples) issues.

Although highly critical of the suboptimal warmth balance of northern European diets compared to classical Asian ones, Hakim Chishti fails to suggest how a better balance could be achieved using plants and animals native to central and northern Europe.

Adaptation of its methods to cool and cold climates is thus an important area where Unani-Tibb research and creativity could be put to excellent use!

5-0 out of 5 stars An indispensible work on Unani medicine
An indispensible work on Unani medicine

Fulbright Research Scholar and naturopathic physician Hakim Chishti studied traditional healing in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India, and, in addition to this present work is also the author of "The Book of Sufi Healing" (Healing Arts Press, 1991).

While conducting research in Kabul, Afghanistan, the author found himself afflicted with a severe form of dysentery and - without access to Western medicine - availed himself of the care of a traditional Unani practitioner, Dr. Hajji Muhammad Sherif, whose traditional treatments were successful and to whom Dr. Chishti eventually became an apprentice. Whilst in Kabul, the author obtained a Persian language edition of Avicenna's Mizan-ul-Tibb (Canon of Medicine) and Rabat-ul-Atfal (Pediatrics) and translated both volumes into English. These form the basis of the present work.

This comprehensive guide to healing synthesizes the principles and practices of that amalgam of Greek, Chinese, Ayurvedic, and Persian medicine that today is practiced throughout the South Asian subcontinent under the name `Unani al-tibb' (i.e., Ionian or Greek medicine). It includes his translation of the two works cited above of Avicenna (Ibn al Sina, born ca. 980 CE), whose writings have been classics in herbal and dietetic medicine for more than a thousand years.Unani Medicine as a healing system was established and institutionalized by Avicenna (known as the "Prince of Physicians") yet because it is a comprehensive system encompassing virtually all of the known healing systems of the world of his day, the threads which comprise Unani can be traced uninterruptedly all the way back to Hippocrates and his disciples.

Based on the philosophy that "food is the best medicine" and that "Allah never sends a disease to humankind without providing its cure," Avicenna's Canon of Medicine provides simple and effective diagnostic techniques and therapies for maintaining and restoring health and strengthening the human organism, in particular its immune system. The book includes a detailed botanical guide for the hundred most commonly used medicinal herbs and recommended treatments for four hundred conditions, including diet and nutrition, lifestyle management, herbal therapy, and aromatherapy. Medicine and health care were perhaps the highest scientific achievements of the Muslims during the Middle Ages and the reason for such an achievement is directly related to Islam itself, both the Qur'an and the Hadith (sayings of the Prophet Muhammad) strongly encouraging the gaining and scientific systematization of medical knowledge.

Chishti builds on Avicenna's approach, bringing extensive knowledge of the original Persian texts to his own twenty years' experience in Unani medicine. Included is a wealth of information on the metabolic value of foods, principles of hygiene, the prophylactic and curative roles of physical exercise and rest, the cycles, natures and classification of fevers, the classification of pain syndromes and the scope and methods of pulse diagnosis.

Subtitled "A Classic Guide to the Medicine of Avicenna," the Traditional Healer's Handbook includes a detailed introduction to Unani medicine's history, philosophy and ethics, theoretical scietific underpinnings, observations on the general practice of traditional medicine, and a materia medica of Unani botanicals along with a formulary.

Avicenna's healing system is explained and elaborated with recipes to maintain optimal immune functioning and includes protocols for the specific treatment of insomnia, depression, influenza, obesity, hemorrhoids, erectile dysfunction, dental pathologies, gastrointestinal disorders, asthma, bronchitis, and arthritis, among others.

Hakim Chishti has distilled the essence of this venerable and quite effective lineage of the healing art into a comprehensive text, clearly and engagingly written. It is an indispensable work for anyone interested in the field and I strongly commend it to anyone engaged in the study or practice of natural medicine, herbalism or any of the great healing lineages of Asia and the Middle East, and as well to students of Islam and Islamic contributions to world civilization.
