Too much emphasis on formal vocabulary
In general, this dictionary lists the Hindi word used in formal contexts, where words of Sanskrit origin are more common, and doesn't list the words that are used in informal contexts, where people tend to use words of Perso-Arabic origin.For example, for the word "question," the dictionary lists "prashna" when most speakers would say "savaal."If you use the words listed in this dictionary, people will tell you (as they told me) that you sound as though you're a character from "Mahaabhaarat," the ancient Indian epic.

From a beginner...
I'm sure this is a wonderful dictionary but if you are a beginner like me, it is not very helpful because it does not have the words translated into roman script.

Of limited use
The Negatives:

1.It requires knowing how to read Hindi.Core material for each section is written in Hindi, and supplementary information is written in a combination of (mostly) English and Hindi.

2.Material was not updated.I believe the original book was created around 1970, and this book came out in 2002.Apparently they simply photocopied from the 1970 edition, copying along with it all the choppy old script and faded areas, as well as statistics from 30+ years ago. Grammatically speaking, I am a Hindi learner, but I was able to read Hindi quite well before even buying the book.Even so, and I had to pause at times to figure out what word was printed.

3. Not for the self-learner. The introduction to this book also states that, unlike other Foreign Service Institute(FSI) ventures, there are no supplementary audio materials.Restating an earlier point, if you cannot read Hindi, you will need some to coach you through the entire book.

On the positive side,I was able to glean a few gems that I had not come across in other books (colloquialisms, grammatical rules, etc.)

In summary, unless you already have a base in Hindi,this book is likely too advanced.If you already have a good base, it will help you brush up on points you might have forgotten. ... Read more

Locality in WH Quantification argues that Logical Form,the level that mediates between syntax and semantics, is derived fromS-structure by local movement. The primary data for the claim oflocality at LF is drawn from Hindi but English data is used indiscussing the semantics of questions and relative clauses. A very detailed book that compliments tutor support.
For a Hindi course at university we work very closely with this book. Istarted from scratch (I had only seen India on the TV!), and it was greatthat it took us through the Devanagri alphabet in the first chapter andintroduced us slowely to the grammar.

Unfortunately, I did find that Istarted to get lost the deeper into the book I got,it is not an easy readand at times the technical terms overwhelmed me. I wouldn't recomend thisbook to anyone who does not have tutor suport so that you can ask questionsand practice conversation (something which the book skips.)

If youalready have a good knowledge of grammar (even in english) you wouldproperly find this book quite detailed and comprehensive. None the less itis very organised, making it quick to refer to. ... Read more
