Product Description
This second book in The Labyrinth Trilogy is a classic work on neo- shamanism. E. .J. Gold penetrates the secrets of traditional esoteric practice--particularly alchemy, shamanism, and mysticism--and he presents techniques for expanded perception and attention that work in everyday contemporary life. Beyond introductory, the book is demanding in its vocabulary, its concepts, and its iconoclastic humor. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A LookInto Shamanism, Transformation, Work in the RealWorld
Although I would recommend getting your feet wet with the first of this trilogy which is the Human Biological Machine as a Transformational Apparatus-this is definitely the next step toward higher dimensional mapping. EJ Gold tells it like it is in terms of your responsibility in taking hold of your life and he does this in ways which may make use of the "dictionary" so be aware. It is not what I would call light reading in any respect of the term. This book is an experience to be read again and again like all of the books by this author are, in my opinion.
Bon Voyage!

5-0 out of 5 stars a sharp look at human affairs
This book is a tour-de-force through the human condition.
It gave me many insights into areas I always wondered, like: is a totempole a merely decorative object or has it a ritual function? Or: What is the job of a shaman? What is the spiritual function of love?
As a matter of fact, this book is filled to the brim with thought-provoking ideas, unusual facts and slightly different views of the world, which open up not only vast areas of discussion, but give actual hints of how you may read spiritual classics like Rumi, Gurdjieff, the Bible, the Koran or the Bhagavadgita with new eyes and a different perspective.
Highly recommended. ... Read more

If you suffer form any form of cronic or autoimmune disease you need to read this book. Also very interesting for anyone wanting to know how to be healthy too!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Much-needed Prescription for Modern Medicine
This book is, indeed, the second edition of the book originally entitled `The Four Pillars of Healing'. If you read that book, then you have read this one: the only differences (besides the lurid cover) seem to be a couple of new appendices and a change to an existing one, and an extensive questionnaire to discover one's mediators, antecedents, triggers, and effects (terms explained in the book). But, since the first edition came out in 1997 and this one in 1998, the references are still quite current.

Basically, Dr. Galland is making the point that modern medicine has lost its way, and is now doing much damage in some cases, and little good in many others. Of course, this is a point rather stridently made by many authors advancing alternatives to the offerings of the medical establishment, such as meditation, acupuncture, herbal therapies, dietary supplements, and so on. Dr. Galland is sympathetic to many of these alternatives, but what is different about his approach is that he wishes to bring them into the fold, as it were, rather than break from the flock. He was trained as a physician in the usual way, a way he now feels is wrong, that modern medicine is expending much effort to solve the wrong problems.

Healing sick people by observing them, interacting with them, and restoring their balance is the foundation of medical art, but somewhere in the 19th century that approach got displaced when microorganisms began to be associated with disease. It was a short step to claim that these microorganisms "caused" the disease - one germ, one disease. Before long a new type of doctor began to dominate medical care, the "specialist". Specialists were trained to think of a disease as an entity with characteristics that were independent of the person it happened to be afflicting. They specifically rejected the view that individual differences mattered, except in a very superficial way. They were emotionally and intellectually ill-equipped to deal with the messiness of real people whose internal ecologies and external circumstances actually determined whether they got sick, and how it showed up. Many people are infected with the TB bacillus, but only a few get TB. And so for so many other diseases.

Dr. Galland believes that one's diet, exercise, habits, emotional life, physical environment, as well as one's intrinsic makeup and history (even one's developmental history in the womb!) should all be factored into any diagnosis, to interpret symptoms and suggest treatment. This he calls "patient-centered" diagnosis, to distinguish is from current practice, which might be called "disease-centered" diagnosis. He believes that many problems that are today attacked with a variety of over-the-counter and prescription drugs, or, more radically, with surgery, are really the result of imbalances in a person's life. Some of these, such as diet, are rather easily correctable, and simple changes in eating habits, perhaps with a course of diet supplements, can reverse the course of what had been tenacious maladies. Other problems, such as stress or loneliness, can impair immune function, but may sometimes be difficult to correct, intertwined as they are with a person's entire way of life. This book has many case studies that bring home the reality of all these issues, and form an entertaining narrative backbone to the discussion.

In general, the author favors the restoration of balance over bringing in the big medical guns. But sometimes the guns are necessary. It may happen, for example, that a person has allergies or nagging illness that result from an undetected (because unchecked-for) parasite, acquired years earlier. In this case, the doctor might prescribe a course of antibiotics to kill the parasite, along with dietary supplements such as live lactobacillus to restore the intestinal flora the antibiotic will also decimate.

This book gives good guidance in eating, in particular, and suggests methods to avoid the health hazards and toxins endemic to modern life. And for issues he does not discuss in detail he often refers to a book that does, so a reader can learn more if he or she is interested. Dr. Galland has no answers, really, to the social and emotional barrenness that afflicts many of us. (How could he?) But he observes that our health is as much a effect of our emotional well-being as it is of anything physical that happens to us.

What made this book so impressive to me was the references that backed up virtually everything the author said. And these were multiple references in the scientific literature to controlled studies. So the meta-message of this book is that you do not have to check your critical faculties at the door when you go in for an holistic approach to health.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good overall resource
So far I'm pleased with my "Holistic Midwifery."Some of the science background is a little bit "mushy" and in a few cases inaccurate, but I'm picky and I have a biology background.I like the midwifery specific aspects very well, and I only gave it 4 stars because of scientific inaccuracies.I would recommend scientific review from other resources, like science textbooks and websites (I mean basic chemistry and physics, molecular structure, etc.).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Midwifery Text
This product came in a timely fashion in new condition. It has great information regarding midwifery, but was purchased as a text book for school. I would recommend this seller and book to others looking for information on midwifery.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love Anne Frye!
After completely falling in love with the idea of midwifery this book helped me to understand what I was experiencing in my last four pregnancies. This book still assists me when helping out friends as is a great reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Holistic Midwifery, Vol I-Anne Frye
I have known Anne Frye as part of the midwifery community here in Oregon since 1992.I first met her at a midwifery conference where she gave the most thorough presentation of prenatal nutrition I'd ever had in the 4 years, at that point, that I had been learning midwifery. Her clear, easy to understand, but incredibly detailed explanations about such things as how the pregnant woman's different blood volume and makeup affects iron levels, protein needs, and commonly misunderstood conditions known as pre-eclampsia and "prenatal diabetes" still stick with me to this day. From what I recall at the time, Anne wrote this series in response to the lack of a comprehensive textbook that focused specifically on midwifery.Until that time, midwives all over used a couple of standard medical texts for obstetrics, one that focused on British nurse-midwifery (a very different standard, though useful), and a combination of books on more focused topics written by midwives. This book provides enough information that, if a midwife had only this text, she would be able to offer excellent prenatal care.

I was one of the first to receive this book, having placed my order directly with her prior to it's first printing.I have referred to it countless times, as I am about to do again for a Master's level counseling course I am taking.Anne Frye draws from many sources, both modern scientific/medical and ancient health practices, to tell, in completion, everything you need to know to adequately be "with woman" in childbearing. The drawings in this book are also beautiful, amazingly done by an artist friend of hers who took great care to ensure their accuracy.
If you are interested in assisting women in their childbearing year, you MUST have and use this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A review for those who aren't midwifes...
This is a wonderful text. Unfortunately it is in a soft cover, unlike vol. 2 which is hard cover, but that aside, it is wonderful.

I am a first-time mom who is planning an unattended home birth. Because of various problems I've also ended up without prenatal care so this volume has proven invaluable to me!! It is clear and exhaustive. This volume has a lot of information directed exclusively for midwives (philosophy of midwivery, how to set up a practice, how to work with different kinds of women, initiating contact and establishing care, etc.), but there is plenty of information useful to "do-it-yourself" prenatal care. It covers what to do during a prenatal exam during each trimester, special circumstances, problems that can occur during pregnancy and information on conditions that might preexist pregnancy.

There is a good section that explains anatomy and physiology that you need to know and I found it easy for me, as a non-medical/non-scientific person, to understand. The index is very thorough.

If you are buying the second volume and aren't sure you should get this one I would recommend that you do get this one because the second volume says that you should review the anatomy and physiology covered in the first volume since it doesn't repeat it and the foundation is essential to understanding the information in the second volume. (If you have medical/midwivery training it may not be so necessary, but then you might appreciate the text for other reasons).

Overall I'd say that if you plan an unattended birth and want to be as informed and safe as possible it is very worthwhile to purchase this volume as well as the second volume and invaluable if you are doing your own prenatal care. If nothing else it can give guidance on when you need to seek a healthcare professional. If you have an attendant then it may only be useful to you if you like to know everything and are willing to pay this much. Otherwise I wouldn't recommend it to the non-midwife.

Oh, don't let the term "Holistic" throw you. It gives in-depth medical information as well as giving some alternative medicine information. My husband is a bio-chemist researcher and has worked as a nurse; he is very pleased with the scientific information in this volume and the next. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Complementary and alternative approaches to health and medicine have become increasingly widespread as the limits of conventional treatments become more apparent. Holistic Anatomy presents an authoritative study of anatomy, physiology, and pathology but expands the discussion by connecting the science of the body to a variety of alternative modalities to explore how human beings exist within—and interact with—their environment, and how they experience existence in emotional and spiritual terms. Basic scientific terminology and detailed descriptions are interwoven with informal, sometimes humorous observations, facts, and ideas about life. The mechanisms, structure, and functions of the body are explored, along with how they relate to spiritual and energetic paradigms, emotions, and ecological principles. The first half of the book covers basic anatomy and physiology, describing each major system of the body and how they interrelate. This part includes a thoughtful discussion of aging and the dying process. The second half focuses on models of health and disease, both traditional and holistic. Topics include western pathology, emotional health, five element medicine, and the spiritual cause for disease. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Review
This book is fantastic; I have read it like a novel devoured from front to back. I love Pip Waller's style of writing keeping it interesting and applicable all the way through.

Her depth of knowledge on the human body, health and spirit clearly comes across -what a total pleasure.

I am using it as a text for my students and I am sure many will learn and grow from reading this wonderful book.
Holistic Anatomy: An Integrative Guide to the Human Body

5-0 out of 5 stars A fine guide for any alternative health collection
Holistic Anatomy: An Integrative Guide to the Human Body provides a fine blend of anatomy, physiology and pathology to explore the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of how humans exist within and interact with their environment. Scientific terminology and detailed descriptions are woven with observations of life and health in a fine guide for any alternative health collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Holistic Anatomy, by Pip Waller
Finally a user-friendly anatomy book! I am no scientist and all the anatomy textbooks I've looked at over the years have been really offputting and intimidating. Pip Waller's book is clearly set out and presents Western anatomy/physiology in a conventional order whilst querying many of the scientific assumptions that have shaped the discipline. It's packed with juicy and provoking insights and is written in a very readable way with clear and well-labelled illustrations. Highly recommended for the lay reader!

5-0 out of 5 stars A book on human biology with the love and awe left in!
A very interesting and enjoyable book to read.

I am fairly familiar with the sciences and have been studying anatomy and physiology as part of my uni course, and this book, though not as in-depth as my text books, provided something they didn't - it helped link up and fill in gaps surrounding my other knowledge, giving a good grounding, looking at the body in a way that brings love and awe, and even giving ways of living a more healthy, balanced life (did you know that studies have shown paracetamol to make the flu last days longer? Now I know!)

I also like all the little deviations from mainstream science: studies done at the fringes and traditions of other cultures. This to me seems so important in a world where often only a very limited and limiting perspective is given.

So overall, I think my knowledge and life has been in someways enriched by reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Holistic Anatomy
I was lent this book by a friend of mine who is a massage therapist. It has been such a brilliantly useful book to have around and so so different from the usual Anatomy and Physiology books I had seen before - all of which come from the clinical, scientific side of the subject and are maddeningly complex to someone like me who starts to glaze over when faced with tricky scientific explanations! Not only is this book written in a way that anyone can understand, it is fascinating to discover things that you wouldn't find in a conventional text book on A&P. I especially like the author's notes at the bottom of the pages - little pointers to other useful books or texts and often her own musings on the subject on the page! Wonderful. ... Read more

Product Description
A majority of holistic medical approaches can complement traditional treatments.

Holistic care means focusing not only on a specific sign or symptom, but working to treat the mind, body and spirit of any patient who is willing to seek answers for what ails them. Most holistic treatment options are based on nature, and include few chemicals that are foreign to the human body. Here are some ways that you can begin to integrate holistic medicine into your life:

Holistic care treats the whole person, rather than just specific areas of the body. The primary difference between holistic care and conventional medicine is that holistic practitioners try to use naturally occurring substances to treat illnesses and disease instead of manufactured chemicals. Additionally, there is a focus on alternative therapies including chiropractic care, acupuncture, massage and even psychotherapy when appropriate. Here are some things that you might not realize about the many holistic techniques available today:

Have you found yourself to be little more than a passive participant in your medical care? If so, you are definitely not alone. One alternative that will make you an active participant is holistic medicine.

With holistic medicine, care is centered on the individual and not just the results of lab tests. The belief that medical care must depend on the individual often seems lost in the realm of medicine. By selecting holistic care, you are taking control of your medical care and will find that your overall well-being improves. Here are some approaches that set holistic medical care apart:

Are you tired of your doctor telling you that the symptoms you are experiencing are just in your head? Well, it turns out that they could very well be right! This is not to say that every unexplained medical problem is an unresolved mental disorder. Instead, it is the idea that emotional issues can potentially lead to physical problems within the body. For this reason, the holistic approach includes treatments for both the mind and the body.

Holistic medicine is not mystical, and it is not mysterious. In fact, holistic medicine is much more real than many people realize. In order to increase the positive effects of medical treatment, it is necessary that the treating practitioner get to know the patient as an individual. Observation and discovery can often uncover potential problems before they begin and help the practitioner to address any specific problems experienced by the patient. Here are some of the ways that holistic care can benefit you:

Do you suffer from a chronic health problem, but you just can’t seem to find a treatment that works? You might be a good candidate for holistic medical care.

Believe it or not, there is a lot more to medical treatments than conventional medicine would have you believe. There are many forms of alternative medicine like homeopathic medications, massage therapy, aromatherapy and nutrition counseling. Each of these approaches focuses on you as an individual so that you can have your needs addressed in a way that is comfortable for you and that works to alleviate not only the symptoms, but the root cause of your problems. Here are some ideas to consider:

Holistic medical care is becoming a buzzword among thirty something's who are looking to play a more active role in maintaining good health. Gone are the days where an apple a day was the only way to stay healthy. Those who have started to enjoy the benefits of holistic medical care will tell you that there is much to be said for preventative care that keeps the mind, body and spirit in excellent condition. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Healing Power of Light
Without the heat, energy, and light of the sun, all of what we take for granted (including our own lives) wouldn't exist. To think, that we owe everything to a very average, small star so very far away. It's almost beyond comprehension how something like the sun shining on our face or seeing a blue sky could represent something so very huge, so absolutely significant.

The Healing Power of Light looks at the life giving powers of the light and then expands to the healing qualities and potential usages for light. It is a truly amazing journey. The initial portion of this book looks at the history, mythology, and science of light. The sections that explore past views on light were especially interesting.

The later portion of this book looks at the healing properties of light. It is an impressive list of techniques, technologies, and potential uses: x-rays, lasers, chemotherapy, the production of vitamin D, light therapy for SAD patients, photon therapy, energy healing, etc. It was extremely interesting and thought provoking reading. I really respected that the author talked about wide range of healing techniques from those we've come to trust to those that are not yet widely recognized. If someone would have told us a century ago that we could use light to see to the bones of a human body or to undertake delicate surgery, we would have thought them absolutely mad. ... Read more
