Product Description
What do Mark Twain, David Beckham, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Mother Teresa have in common? All have been enthusiastic fans of homeopathy, the alternative medical tradition that treats “like with like.” Homeopathy has an incredible history of support by many of the most respected people of the past 200 years, and modern science is finally catching up. In The Homeopathic Revolution, Dana Ullman blends vivid personal stories and quotes from these and other luminaries from a variety of eras and fields with a new definition of homeopathy as “nanopharmacology”–one that will help people, including skeptics, start to understand its value. After explaining why conventional medicine is inadequately scientific, why homeopathy makes sense and works, and why it is so threatening to conventional medicine and drug companies, Ullman lets legends like Coretta Scott King, Cindy Crawford, Bill Clinton, Vincent Van Gogh, and other practitioners weigh in on the subject. By writing about homeopathy’s heroes and telling their stories, Ullman is able to reference and describe important scientific studies in user-friendly language that verifies the value of this widely used but still misunderstood tradition. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very impressed and easy to read
I enjoyed this book.I'm really impressed with the amount of information that's in there and never realized how many people actually used homeopathy in the past.I also enjoyed the author's enthusiasm for the subject and am glad to see something like this being published for all to read and learn more about it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Braindead
This book is an extended "argumentum ad populum."It does not matter how many people like something if it is wrong.Bleeding sick people was, once, popular.Treating people with horrible purgatives was, once, popular.History is replete with ineffective, yet popular, remedies.

Aside from the invalidity of the premise, the book is factually wrong. For example, Darwin was treated by a "hydrotherapist" (James Gully, as I recall) not a homeopath.Darwin despised homeopaths, not that his opinion matters concerning their lack of efficacy. After 200+ years, there is no good support for any homeopathic treatment.

Sorry, I can't give this nonsense zero stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE HOMEOPATHIC REVOLUTION by Dana Ullman
The name and life work of Dana Ullman, MPH, should be familiar to practitioners of homeopathy around the world, and especially in the English speaking world. Indeed, in America, his name and service to homeopathy is certainly well known toevery practitioner and to many grateful laypersons who rely upon the resources he offers them. His justified fame comes not only through the publication of his ownfine books, but perhaps even more actively through his dedicateddirectorship of the Homeopathic Educational Services, based in California but accessible to the world by mailorder and online.I daresay mostAmerican students andpractitioners of homeopathy couldhardlysurvivewithout this well-established, reliable, and highly respectedcomprehensive source of books, media and software and publicationsfocussed on homeopathy. Through the resources of theHomeopathic Educational Services and his popular books,I believe Ullmanhas done more to educate, inform and thereby advance homeopathy in the United States than any other single individual. As such, any new book by Ullman is well worth the attention of the practitioner or anyone interested in this fascinating branch of healing, experiencing a rebirth in the 21st century--to a significant extent, midwifed in Americaby Ullman. His latest work, The Homeopathic Revolution (North Atlantic Press), provides a rich source of historical information on the source and rocky road of homeopathy by tracing its history and with brief biographies of its pioneers and patients.

The Homeopathic Revolutionthrough its highly readable textand uniquely appealing approachcanbe very valuable indeedfor opening some
minds whichmight very wellbe moreinfluenced by the personalities and famous exemplars from the history of literature, the arts and sciences and entertainment since the advent of homoepathy in the early 19th century through the present.
In an age of Media where fascination with the personalities of the public world, there is a particular attraction to the use of the famous as exemplars, including the wide spectrum of those offered by thebook, i.e., themany special and
admired people who have been documented asdevotees of homeopathy. The devotees of thosedevotees will certainly have their
minds opened by the examples set.Although more detailed history within a broader historical setting may be found in Coulter's multi-volume history,
Ullman's book provides something rather different in spite of the inevitable overlaps in historical material....and considerably moreentertainment through the fascination of an historical play and its players.

There willprobablyberather fewer serendipitous surprises for readers already familiar with homeopathy's history through Coulter, & al,in discovering celebrities of the past and accounting for homeopathy's struggle for survival, than for someone more or less unfamiliar with homeopathy's struggle for recognition and survival. However, the struggle of homeopathy to achieve and maintain its unique approach is an heroic one, on the grand scale and worthy of more historical/personal treatments which characterize Ullman's book....especiallygiven the increasingly prevalent phenomenon of celebrity worship and the cult of the personality in our media-influenced society. But I do not mean to suggest that this is merely a tantalizing read, with homeopaths as heroes:the book should prove a powerful raiser of consciousness among readers who might not otherwise give homeopathic treatment a try, influenced by its popularity among the great and famous.

From other perspectives, the book offers interesting insights and syntheses of the historical, biographical and scientific. For example, of fascinating interest isthe repeated presence and reference to the great 19th century naturalist whose theories of evolution and the origin of species through natural selection also constituted arevolution, viz.,Charles Darwin.Ifoundthe Darwin's appearances in the story especially relevant in an account of the origin of homeopathy and its descent in man and the survival of the fittest....i.e., in the evolution of medicine.Homeopathy appeared and gained its place in medicine at a time when allopathic medicine offered little in the way of effective treatments for most diseases and was making real progress only in the mechanics of surgery and sanitation. Once allopathic medicine found itself threatened and hired a PR expert to promote itself and discredit its more effective competition, the historical equivalent to Darwin's concept of mutation (here in the form of the Madison Avenue approach to conditioning a population regarding choice of medical care), homeopathy faltered and almost disappeared into extinction. Yet, it survived andI am reminded that although the incredibly powerfuland once dominant dinosaurs are today apparently extinct and so one might not think "fit" enough to survive, it is also clear that the dinosaursactually do survive everywhere on earth asbirds. That is, their survivors adapted to fresh forms to preserve their unique genus and genius.....which is what Ibelievehappened, and is happening, to homeopathy. Far from becoming extinct, it is surviving, not only reappearing in its classical forms far from its birthplace (e.g., in India, a land with a history for tolerance of diversity in thought)but in new forms (e.g., complex homeopathy, EAV and vegatesting, &c).

For myself, readingthrough the book felt like a guided tour through a wax museum of homeopathic history, a Mme. Tussaud's of the Similimum, pausing at each of the bigger than life statuesas Ullman profiled the intriguingpersonalitieswho populate the history of homeopathy and thereby define it in a personal way. It is an impressive cast of characters in the saga: US Presidents from Abraham Lincoln to Bill Clinton, Benjamin Disraeli, numerous Indian political and religious leaders in particular (India, to its great credit, seeming to be the land of the Second Coming of homeopathy),many famous females, e.g., in medicine, Florence Nightingale, Clara Barton, in civil rights Susan B. Anthony, and Louisa May Alcott and fellow literary luminaries such asMark Twain... and a stellar cast of 19th century authors. Perhaps even more impressive than the more traditionally open-minded masters of arts, are homeopathic partisans amongplutocrats like J.D.Rockefeller, many monarchs including, most famously, the present Queen of England and Prince of Wales, And as formusicians, actors, athletes and other entertainers, I feel hopeless to know where tobegin listing the superstars who depend upon homeopathic treatment.Ullman skillfully weaves literary references to homeopathy with historical excerpts to humanize the generations of some of the cream of human creativity and productivity who respected or depended upon homeopathy for their health. Of course, many physicians appear in the account, most of their names unknown to the layperson, but influential both in the progress and preservation of homeopathy...as well as in its defamation by the public relations office of the American Medical Association, whose outlandish melodramatic antics (including outright blackmail)beggar belief.

As an alternative medicaltherapy, homeopathy is about people, after all. With a few exceptions, since most new books about homeopathy are abouttechnical praxis or theory,I had tokeep reminding myself of this personal slant--that homeopathy is also a history which reflects the vagaries of the human personnae. However, since Imyself admittedly have a theoretical bias, the following commentsaddress that orientation:

I especiallyappreciatedhowlarger, importantissues of society seem to
naturally arise in the narrative --e.g., the account of the
relationship of feminism to homeopathy, a correlation which has long
fascinated me as a reflection of a powerful, arguably essentially feminine,
energy in homeopathy insofar as it is a gentle, relatively
nonintrusive and nurturing form of therapy compared to the more
aggressive allopathic interventions.
other issues which i have always found interesting in homeopathy
which are integrated in the saga, address include the notable presenceand influence of
Swedengorgian ideas. the fundamental commonality of swedenborg's
cosmology to certain asian metaphysics has also struck me--e.g.,
jainism. both Swedenborg and the Jains perceived the universe
metaphysicallyas a macrocosmic physiology. other asian philosophies
are also compatible with homeopathic concepts. for instance, the
basic meditation methods advocated in early buddhism (and still
practiced more than 2500 years later) include a visualization of the
pathological counterparts to desire and attachment, which along with
a fundamental delusion about the materiality of the ego, constitute
the source of suffering. such meditations (e.g., charnal ground
meditations, &c) are essentially homeopathic in their psychodynamics.

Related to such western (e.g., Swedenborg) andasiatic(e.g.,
Jainism, Buddhism from Theravada to Dzogchen) spirituality is,
increasingly, DrRajan Sankaran's evolvingand innovative theoretics: his
conceptualization of the alien (and alienating) , nonhuman realms of
the vegetable, mineral and nonhuman animal kingdoms as energetic
pathological entities, also resonates with ideas in all three
paradigms (e.g., the jains believe that animals, vegetables and even
minerals are sentient, accumulators of pathogenic karma, &c. likewise
the realms of rebirth which karma propels human beings according to
their conduct, also include the same kingdoms which materialize
energy on earth and which can be diagnosticallyidentified in
sankaran's theory of sensations.(interestingly, the old title given
to psychoanalystsof "alienist"would seem to better apply to
homeopaths using Sankaran'sdiagnostic criteria for locating the
remedy in the alien energy present in the patient. )

fFr me, the crucial key is the understanding and finding homeopathy
credible is to embrace the concept thathomeopathy functions
essentiallynonmaterially. this concept is the least palatable and
digestible to conventional allopathic thinking because of its belief
that the human being is a material being.buddhism, in particular,
clarifies the nonmaterial nature of human beings, that its apparent
corporeality or materiality is the fundamental delusion in the
aetiology of suffering (whether it is experienced physically or
psychically). for anyone who accepts this metaphysical model (e.g.,
me), the concept of the treatmentwith nonmaterial remedies of
essentially nonmaterial suffering in essentially nonmaterial humans
makesprofoundly perfect sense...

(By the way, if the reader has not already read it, mayi suggest you
Prof. B. Alan Wallace's excellent book, Choosing Reality? If
the readers of this revieware unfamiliar with Wallace, he was trained as a physicist but became a Buddhist monk. a translator for the dalai lama and now a
professor at the University of California atSanta Barbara, Wallace's book analyzes the so-called "scientific method" (is it really scientific) which allopaths claim to employ and compare it with other valid means to knowledge. The "weakness" of homeopathy being "tested"
by inappropriate methodology more suited to allopathy, and found wanting, can be better understood by the insights of this brief but invaluable study of the assumptions and intellectual monopoly of the so-called scientific method.
Although I do not recall that it mentions homeopathy or even medicine
particularly, Ifound this slim volume to be one of the best
catalysts for opening the mind tounfamiliar, if not unorthodox paradigms.
(it is readily available, in print by Snow Lion press).

From thesecontemplative digressions inspired by the thought provoking contents of Ullman's The Homeopathic Revolution, one can perhaps get a sense of
how inspiring ofintegrative andconnective thought this very
enjoyablebook was.... and, for me,that is the highest praise of
an book, being, for me, the most important potentialof any work of
art, including literary (even when nonfictional) is to invite,
catalyzeand inspire the participation of thecreative imagination
of its audience, and so inspiresynthesizing gestalts to be created
by making the insightful connections which unify knowledge and inspire as the antecedents of wisdom.

If you have ever wanted to try homeopathy, but weren't sure what it is, or thought your doctor would laugh at you, read this book and learn more about it, it's history and other famous people who were helped by it.I have found it incredibly useful and fun to use the information in conversations with others about natural health care. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must For Any Cat Owner Wanting to Use Homeopathy.
I am currently studying for my Bachelor of Homeopathy and have two cats, and this book is the best that I have read on the subject. It's very informative, practical, and easy to use as a reference text, but it also makes a very interesting read as Dr Wolff gives some amazing insights into feline health and behaviour. After I read it I used one of the recommended remedies on one of my cats who has suffered from gastro-intestinal disease all his life (which is not curable with conventional medicine) and after only 2 doses all his symptoms had disappeared completely and he has been 100% healthy ever since. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to know how to treat their cat using homeopathy. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars there are better books out there
I really wanted to like this book as it got good reviews. Being a parent with above average intelligence, I figured I could really use this book. I was wrong. The author does give a very good history of homeopathy, but otherwise the book is disorganized, hard to follow and hard to use. I wanted a guide to help a novice (me)navigate the homeopathy offerings at wholefoods - this was not the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars not much of a self-help book
I'm glad I got this from the library before buying it. This has very little self-help in it. There are other books with more complete and more easily searched self-help sections.
This book might be good if you need to be convinced about the usefulness and benefits of homeopathy for your family, but I'm past that point and got very annoyed at being cautioned on about every other page that I need to work with a trained homeopath and could not possibly do or comprehend more than simple acute care by myself. It was written on behalf of the American Institute of Homeopathy so maybe that explains something. He also cautions ominously against polypharmacy, but never gave any reason or proof why this should be so bad.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT GUIDE
I have been using homeopathic remedies for some time, but this book opens up my understanding more on why, how much, what, and when. I have had phenomenal success using homeopathic remedies and would advise everyone interested in keeping dangerous drugs out of their bodies or those of their family's should at least read up on the subject, and this is one of the books to start with!

I am always surprised when people say to me "that stuff is quackery, or you've been conned", yet they will go to their doctor and get a drug with deadly side-effects and take it! If only they knew that not all the prescriptions doctors give out have been tested - which is why a doctor will say to them "we'll try this one and if it doesn't work, we'll try something else!" And because it is a doctor who says it, people are gullible to believe that drug will not hurt them!

Get the book, READ IT, and then ask yourself is it worth a try? You can't hurt yourself with it, and it won't cost a fortune to buy it!

1-0 out of 5 stars The American Institute of Homeopathy Handbook for partents.
I was looking (still haven't found) a book about homeopathic remedies, strengths and dosages. I didn't find it in this book, most of the book explained how it is better to live healthy than to take medicines.

5-0 out of 5 stars I sell homeopathic products
I recently opened a 'healing products' store in an Interstate Super Flea Market mall, and retail a branded homeopathic line of remedies. Not being a doctor, but making referrals to homeopathic professionals, this book was exactly what I needed torelate homeopathic remedies to visitors to my new store and provide them with simple comprehensive understandable information useful for adults and children, alike.

I believe the book to be a good bridge between patient and professional, alike, to understand specifics and the proper use of these wonderful medications anytime one is visiting or calling a professional practitioner.

I highly recomend it to any lay person, like myself, who is interested in learning about homeopathics with or without the help of a homepathics professional. For anyone with serious illiness, especially chronic sufferers of pain and acute disease, I highly recommend that one should always work with a trusted professional, and I strongly recommend browsing this book prior to selecting a homeopathic professional, and keeping it handy throughout any conversations and use of prescribed remedies.

After reading the book and answering a few customer questions today, I am so pleased that I am ordering additional copies from Amazon.com to make the book immediately available to my own customers who request it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best introduction to homeopathic medicine on the market.
Dana Ullman, one of the leading advocates of homeopathic medicine, has produced a comprehensive, lucid introduction to this branch of complementary medicine, covering the history and the philosophy of homeopathy as well as the (surprisingly strong) scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness for a variety of conditions. A detailed discussion of the effectiveness and the limits of homeopathy in the treatment of infectious disease, allergies, chronic diseases, psychological conditions and dentistry, as well as its applications in pregnancy and labour, women's health, pediatrics and sports medicine follows.

The final part of the book gives concrete advice on how to learn more about homeopathy, in particular about homeopathic self-treatment, and on how to go about finding a homeopathic practitioner. To avoid misunderstanding, this is not a self-care book. Detailed remedy pictures and usage instructions are beyond the scope of this book. If that is what you are looking for, I would recommend "The Consumer's Guide to Homeopathy" by the same author, which gives a condensed version of the historical and philosophical background of homeopathy as a prelude to a detailed discussion of the self-treatment of acute conditions.

A list of homeopathic manifacturers, organizations and schools and a bibliography complete this work. ... Read more

Product Description

The art and science of truly successful homeopathic medicine.

With the recent resurgence in the practice of homeopathy -- whether practiced alone or as a complement to other types of medicine -- comes an unprecedented demand for well-educated, highly trained practitioners. What type of education will lead to true success? Can the art of homeopathy be taught alongside the scientific concepts? Generations of homeopaths have mastered such concepts as homeoprophylaxis, genus epidemicus, and constitution, but only the truly successful practitioners have achieved a level of understanding far beyond simply dealing with patients.

In this unique book, homeopath Chris Kurz offers a highly effective -- and fun -- approach to learning and importantly, retaining, all of the important concepts of homeopathy. Using vivid analogies and informal language, Kurz emphasizes the importance of true insight rather than rote memorization. Infusing a student's personal experience with creativity and imagination creates the most fertile ground for discovering and developing true insight and knowledge of homeopathy. Each chapter explores a concept through the lens of an experiment, metaphor, or image. For example, an intense examination of a common lemon brings home the notions of totality and the law of similars; a road map unlocks the mysteries of Miasms, and a game of golf illustrates important issues of case management.

The result of years working with students, Kurz's inspirational and thought-provoking approach places the patient at the center of the learning process, as in everyday practice. Imagine Homeopathy is invaluable as a guide for teachers, an introduction for novices and laypeople, and a provocative refresher for seasoned practitioners.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on homeopathy I've read in a long time!
Since I was intrigued by the title and have been on to homeopathy for over a year, I decided to add this book to my homeopathy library (currently about 20 books and growing :-). Already from the start I could see that this book was going to be different than the others. What's different is that Chris Kurz explains exactly those topics that are difficult to understand in other books in a way that makes intuitive sense to me. He uses images, analogies and even little experiments to get you thinking along the right lines. This approach seemed to work great for me, since even such heavy concepts as "miasms" and "homeoprophylaxis" (homeopathic vaccination) were explained using a metaphor that makes intuitive sense and got me to understand what's really behind those concepts.

This book is not a self-help book, there are already oodles of those out on the market. This one is about the "how" and "why" of homeopathy. Product Description
According to Sensations a homeopath can find the best remedy for one's ills by listening to a description of the bodily sensations one experiences when having a headache, a skin rash or just a bad day.

Ran masterfully describes the intricate behind-the-scenes details of a homeopath s mind drawing upon her own clinical experiences working with the Sensation Method. She outlines and illustrates this approach in an easy-to-understand and enjoyable format. The book consists of ten descriptive cases, where the reader gets acquainted with the lifestyles and problems of ten distinctly different people seeking help with migraines, menstrual cramps, carpal tunnel syndrome, hypertension, acute kidney colic, and children with autism, head lice, and eczema. Interspersed in the dialogue between homeopath and client you read about the homeopath s thought process and follow the events like a Sherlock Holmes detective story.

The book is suitable and informative for the novice as well as readers more seasoned in homeopathic philosophy. Homeopathy is a popular holistic healing modality that helps the body heal itself gently yet effectively. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "sensations" is insightful and alternative
I really appreciated reading Ran's approach to Homeopathy, which seems unique as well as holistic given the mind-body connection. For a mental-health practioner who is interested in chronic illness, I found this book is helpful in understanding a clinical interview and what to look for and assist your client with in describing their bodily sensations. For a Homeopath, I would think this book would be essential to understanding this form of one's practice that, as shown through descriptive case studies, is effective. For anyone, it can open your mind to disease and treatment.Highly recommended reading!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Enlightening Read!
Before reading this book, I knew very little about Homeopathy.I am currently obtaining my Master's degree in clinical psychology and I was surprised and pleased to learn how closely related the two fields were.I don't know if this is common, but Ran's extensive detailing of her own Homeopathic interviews demonstrated a deep understanding of the human experiences integrated with a vast knowledge of Homeopathic practices. The brief introduction to the field of Homeopathy was very helpful, but it was the included excerpts from her appointments that demonstrated that she has a ninnate aturally insightful way of understanding the human condition and her ability to bring healing through this understanding is remarkable!I would recommend this to people like myself who are just beginning to learn about Homeopathy, as well as those who have an extensive knowledge of the field as this book stands alone in providing a clear demonstration of what the process of Homeopathy can be in its highest form.

5-0 out of 5 stars sensations - insights into revealing powers...
What an insightful book to read... Ildiko Ran makes the world of healing powers of homeopathy a trip into the inner world of understanding one's own potentiality. Using creative writing at it's best, the book reads easily and is at the same time informative discussing the different cases. I was fortunate enough to have Ildiko as my homeopath cherishing the sessions with her inmmensly, because of her holistic approach, which her book beautifully demostrates.A joy to read...

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent reference book
I found this book extremely helpful as a reference. Most homeopathic medicines work according to one's personality and no doctor can evaluate that in just few visits. This book helps to match the medicine best suited for you.It has good remedies for common health problems given at the end of the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Self help for Families
This is an easy to use guide to homeopathic remedies, with lots of detailed information about the remedies and how they should be used.It also has a list of common ailments for adults and children with a guide to remedies to treat them, both with homeopathic remedies and home treatments - and when to stop trying to solve the problem yourself and head to the doctor!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book - more detailed and better looking than others
One of the more complete and well illustrated books available. This would suit a detail-oriented, inquisitive mind. DK also publishes simpler books on homeopathy and alternative medicine which would better suit those looking for an introduction. Why only 4-stars then? Well, the book is still incomplete for somebody looking to self-medicate (which is probably safe but a bad idea anyway), and I find that the description of how homeopathy works rather weak and unscientific.Although I know two people who claim to have been cured by it.There seems to be a tendency to pass off old, inadequate research as "good enough" -- well in this day and age I would expect better; the author is an MD after all. "Hair of cat" as a cure for cat allergies strikes me as similar to "hair of the dog" for hangovers (at least there was no eye-of-newt).

4-0 out of 5 stars Homeopathy : An easy approach
How to understand history and development of homeopathy?

I was searching and no book convinces me, but when finally found this volume, I found the easiest way to understand and "feel" the homeopathic system. The book is divided basically in three sections:-Mineral remedies -Vegetal remedies -Symptoms and the appropriate homeopathic medicine.

It has a lot of illustrations and guides through the very special world of homeopathy, allowing to learn (the easy way) this fascinating matter!. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent , if anecdotal, summary of what non traditional treatment can offer.
Regardless of your opinion regarding the efficacy of non-traditional treatments for medical ailments and diseases, Dr. Johnston presents believable anecdotes of her experience that will make you rethink the possibilities.

I've been somewhat "agnostic" on the subject, but my own physician recommended I read this book and I've found it very interesting and credible.I am still digesting it, but, if nothing else, homeopathy (or alternative medicine) seems to offer another potentially effective tool for the medical professional and for us victims that is increasingly difficult for any rational person to ignore.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must-read" book for anyone considering homeopathy
This book explains the ideas behind homeopathy in a clear manner, so everyone can understand it and decide for themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars A clear explanation of how homeopathy heals.
This is one of the most clear, understandable explanations of howhomeopathy works that I have ever read. It just simply makes sense! Dr.Johnston's analogies and metaphors on the amazing healing process ofhomeopathy are really helpful.

The book takes the confusion out of allthe contradictory things I had heard about homeopathy. I never understoodbefore why this system can cure conditions that conventional medicine can'thelp, and now I see how this is possible. It is so reassuring to know thatLinda Johnston, coming from a conventional medical background, has soactively embraced the homeopathic medical system and shared her knowledgewith us.

This book gives the readers a sound hope and confidence thatthey can get better! I strongly recommend this book. Anyone can benefitfrom reading it! ... Read more

Product Description
Today, one out of every three Americans uses some form of alternative medicine, either along with their conventional (“standard,” “traditional”) medications or in place of them. One of the most controversial–as well as one of the most popular–alternatives is homeopathy, a wholly Western invention brought to America from Germany in 1827, nearly forty years before the discovery that germs cause disease. Homeopathy is a therapy that uses minute doses of natural substances–minerals, such as mercury or phosphorus; various plants, mushrooms, or bark; and insect, shellfish, and other animal products, such as Oscillococcinum. These remedies mimic the symptoms of the sick person and are said to bring about relief by “entering” the body’s “vital force.” Many homeopaths believe that the greater the dilution, the greater the medical benefit, even though often not a single molecule of the original substance remains in the solution.
In Copeland’s Cure, Natalie Robins tells the fascinating story of homeopathy in this country; how it came to be accepted because of the gentleness of its approach–Nathaniel Hawthorne and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow were outspoken advocates, as were Louisa May Alcott, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Daniel Webster. We find out about the unusual war between alternative and conventional medicine that began in 1847, after the AMA banned homeopaths from membership even though their medical training was identical to that of doctors practicing traditional medicine. We learn how homeopaths were increasingly considered not to be “real” doctors, and how “real” doctors risked expulsion from the AMA if they even consulted with a homeopath.

At the center of Copeland's Cure is Royal Samuel Copeland, the now-forgotten maverick senator from New York who served from 1923 to 1938. Copeland was a student of both conventional and homeopathic medicine, an eye surgeon who became president of the American Institute of Homeopathy, dean of the New York Homeopathic Medical College, and health commissioner of New York City from 1918 to 1923 (he instituted unique approaches to the deadly flu pandemic). We see how Copeland straddled the worlds of politics (he befriended Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, and Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, among others) and medicine (as senator, he helped get rid of medical “diploma mills”). His crowning achievement was to give homeopathy lasting legitimacy by including all its remedies in the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act of 1938.

Finally, the author brings the story of clashing medical beliefs into the present, and describes the role of homeopathy today and how some of its practitioners are now adhering to the strictest standards of scientific research–controlled, randomized, double-blind clinical studies. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars More Copeland than Homeopathy
I was interested in the history of homeopathy and this was a place I thought would be good to research. It's primarily about Royal Copeland who came along well after the inception of this field. He does have a bit of influence on homeopathy in the US, but he's not essential. as a bio of him, I thought the book very romanticly written, especially regarding his childhood. He is presented as a true blue upstanding man who worked too hard for the bennefit of the public. His story is noble and facinating, I just thouhgt a bit over polished it seemed. As a historical account of homeopathy in the US, it has its info. I couldn't get over the glaring hole in homeopathies claims versus third party testing validation, something the author (and seemingly the homeopathis community) kind of sweeps right by. But then, this isn't a history of homeopathy, but much more of Copeland himself.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!
The main reason I bought this book was because it is about my Grandfather. He died when I was very young, and I don't remember him. I have read alot about him, but Natalie made him "come to life" for me in so many ways, as well as my great grandfather! I love the book for all the biographical information I got out of it. I really appreciate her doing all the research she did to write it! Thanks Natalie! You did a great job!!! Ginger

5-0 out of 5 stars Is less more?
Natalie Robins gives us (at what must have been , judging from her bibliography, an enormous cost in sweated research) three books for the price of one.
The first is a biography of Royal Copeland; the second a history of the relationships between a variety of ancillary health professionals and regular MD's; the third is an investigation of the current standing of homeopathy.
I enjoyed the biography best. Some of the life goes out of the book when Copeland dies (on page 218, in 1938).He was a figure straight out of Sinclair Lewis, naïve in some ways but able to manipulate people and get ahead. He qualified as a homeopathic physician from a mid-western diploma mill. His energy and chutzpah brought him to make it big in New York City and rise to the United States Senate, founding New York Medical College and writing a medical advice column for William Randolph Hearst.Much about his pronouncements and statements was unintentionally comic. Robins cleverly lets him speak for himself. The text is peppered with his wondrous medical claims and hilarious pictures. (The descriptions of his ophthalmic procedures are messed up - it's needling not "kneedling" that was done for cataracts).
The explanation of the varying relationships over the years between doctors of medicine, homeopaths, osteopaths, naturopaths, chiropractors, podiatrists, optometrists, herbalists, acupuncturists, etcetera, and of their different qualifications was the clearest I've ever seen.
Evaluating the claims of these various practitioners obviously treads on touchy ground, and whether she does a fair job of it will be a matter of the reader's opinion, but she is able to make it entertaining as well as instructive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Attempted Balance in the History of American Homeopathy
We are greatly interested in our health, and are eager to spend huge sums of money on pills to improve it (though we are less eager, it seems, to change our habits of diet and exercise). If there was ever a need to fill, as in "Find a need and fill it," medical treatment holds enormous potential for enriching practitioners. This has always been true, and has been true before medicine was on a strong scientific basis, and is true for "alternative" treatments that have no scientific basis. These days, there is standard medical practice, the usual thing that graduates of medical schools are engaged in, and there are many alternatives: acupuncture, chiropractic, herbal remedies, naturopathy, aromatherapy, and many more.Alternative medicine, to the disgust of many doctors and skeptics, has gotten some official level of approval; there's the Office of Complementary and Alternative Medicine in the National Institutes of Health, and financial approval shown by coverage from many insurance companies.Among the most famous of such therapies is homeopathy, so it is timely to read _Copeland's Cure: Homeopathy and the War between Conventional and Alternative Medicine_ (Knopf) by Natalie Robins. It is mostly a biography of Royal Samuel Copeland, a homeopath, conventional doctor, eye surgeon, Health Commissioner of New York City, and U.S. Senator, but Copeland's constant efforts for his beloved homeopathy encompassed the practice's heyday. The controversies he battled are the same ones that alternative medicines are experiencing today, making Robins's detailed look at Copeland's life useful background for current clashes.

Robins starts with a history of homeopathy, which was invented in 1796 by the German doctor Christian Friedrich Samuel Hahnemann, who was horrified by the high doses of medicine that doctors used at the time.He developed a system of curing by giving highly dilute solutions of medicines, so that only the tiniest amount, or even no amount, of the original drug remained in solution.Copeland, born in 1868, took up homeopathy, was president of the American Institute for Homeopathy, and translated his leadership into the civic arena, always promoting homeopathic treatments without shouting that he was doing so.He was busy promoting homeopathy during the time when medicine really did become scientific and really made cures such as those with penicillin, while homeopathic schools folded. He had frequent battles with the American Medical Association.Copeland died in 1938; he probably simply worked himself to death.

Robins says that she has tried to give both sides of the argument about homeopathy, but admits that "scientific proof is only a distant possibility."Homeopathic claims include that water not only has a memory for teensy amounts of solutes, but that such a memory can be captured, digitized, and sent over the internet to be instilled into another water sample. The claims cannot make logical, scientific sense; if such tiny (even to the point of nonexistence) amounts of chemicals change the water somehow, then think how much even distilled water must change as soon as it touches glass or is exposed to air.Nonetheless, Robins profiles two modern homeopaths at the end of her book, each of whom are convinced not only that homeopathy works but that science will show it to do so.Even so, they have to speak warily of scientific investigations; one admits, for instance, that there was a study for homeopathy for premenstrual symptoms, showing homeopathy improved them, "...but the number of patients was small and the methodological quality was poor."Another says that a cure that is "more spiritual" will work better.Homeopathy does have at least one thing to teach conventional doctors: patients report that they are happy with the amount of time the homeopathic provider spends with them. This is surely no small matter in producing the sort of satisfaction in patients that homeopaths prize. If the homeopaths are going to make extraordinary claims, like memory in water, they can only expect that conventional doctors would like to see some extraordinary evidence that this is so, or at least robust and replicable studies showing real cures.Homeopathy either makes a difference or it doesn't, and clinical tests will show one way or the other, unless excuses are made that they cannot test such things as the "spirituality" of the treatment.Even one of the modern homeopaths profiled here agrees with the editors of the _New England Journal of Medicine_ "...who wrote that there is not alternative and conventional medicine, there is just good and bad medicine."The bustling, energetic, platitudinous, and self-serving Royal Copeland revealed in these entertaining pages would certainly agree; but evidence that homeopathy goes into the "good medicine" category is lacking.

Product Description
One of the most fascinating aspects of homeopathy is how a simple substance, a food perhaps like onions or garlic, can be potentized into a powerful homeopathic remedy. Or how common table salt becomes perhaps our most used homeopathic remedy, Natrum Muriaticum. The Homeopathic Garden looks at common substances found in every garden and every kitchen and shows how they becomes powerful healing tools through the process of potentization, giving complete information for the uses of each.

Cooking is, perhaps, chief among Vinton McCabe's hobbies. As he puts it, “I have earned every ounce of fat on my body by having cooked or baked myself everything that I ate to get there.” While working in his kitchen, chopping onions and garlic, handling condiments and spices, working with vegetables, it occurred to McCabe just how many of the things found in every kitchen have been made into remedies that are important parts of the homeopathic pharmacy. That realization was the genesis of this piece, which explores the connection between food and medicine—specifically homeopathic medicine—makes the subject matter doubly important to its author. Vinton McCabe is the author of seven books on holistic healing and the Kindle series Homeopathy in Philosophy and Practice. He may, some day, also write a cookbook. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Interesting!
This a great book for homeopaths and homeopathic students to learn about the sequential method of prescribing. I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening... And a Bit Disturbing!
...Enlightening because of references to Homeopathy's awesome healing power, its relationships with Vital Energy and Traditional Chinese Medicine, its colorful and tumultuous history, and the various intriguingmethods by which its remedies are concocted.

...Disturbing because ofrevelations of extensive physical, psychological, social and genetic damagebeing done by vaccinations and other accepted medical practices, and theextensive multi-discipinary training, intuitional abilities, insight, patience and skill required by a doctor to practice Real Medicine!Iwonder if Dr. Elmiger realizes the element of despair that may arise in hisreaders upon realization that there are perhaps only a handful of doctorsin the world capable of following this method!Or that with age one'smedical history becomes so convoluted that even the best practitioner maytake pause when faced with such a Gordian Knot, the exact chronologicalsequencing of therapy based on life's shocks being a critical element inthe treatment's success.

The reviews that follow are excellent and I willnot belabor their points. However, at the end of the book one is clearlyinstructed that Homeopathy is only one leg of a three-legged stool -Osteopathy and nutrition being the other important elements of healthcare.

This book is a very important step in the right direction forMedicine.Despite seemingly directed towards the medical profession, itmakes fascinating reading even for the lay person (or perhaps notsurprisingly since it was initially intended as a tutorial for Dr.Elmiger's patients).

In print world-wide, I'll bet Dr. Elmiger is a busyman these days!

5-0 out of 5 stars Homeopathy. Sequential Therapy.
This is an extraordinary text. The author, Jean Elmiger, MD. is a Swiss physician of 40 years experience in internal medicine.Roughly 25 years ago, deeply dismayed because he was able to offer only palliative chemicalsto his patients, he originated and developed the concept of SequentialTherapy.

Sequential Therapy is based upon Hering's Law which states thatthe body heals from the inside outward.Extrapolating from this premise,Elmiger demonstrates that as we go through life we suffer physical andemotional traumas in layers;similar to the layers of an onion.Earlytraumas such as five simultaneous vaccinations at the age three months, ablow to the head, or the loss of a close loved one, can leave the person'svital force disturbed; more susceptible to disease. We all have family orfriends who have suffered physical or emotional traumas and, "havenever been the same since".Their vital force has been disturbed - itis out of balance. As the unresolved trauma continues to affect theperson, the vital force attempts to re-establish an equilibrium, but it isat the continuing cost of much energy that would otherwise be spent onhealth and healing. It is similar to a broken bone that was not properlyset. On the outside all appears normal but, beneath the surface, one caneasily find the disjointed union and mechanical dysfunction.

Thus, if theimportant layers of trauma are addressed in the reverse order of theiroccurrence, with each layer re-balanced the patient will obtain animprovement in their vital force. As their vital force improves they areable overcome many chronic ailments such as colitis, asthma and arthritis, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue.

Sequential Therapy uses specificsingle-remedy homeopathics to address these traumas and to heal the mostintractable patients.

This book is for the physician who desires to knowhow to use homeopathy in conjunction with allopathy and obtainextraordinary results for their chronically ill patients. It is for thehomeopath who wonders why the simple cures simply no longer work at a deeplevel.Equally, it is for the lay person who through "RediscoveringReal Medicine" learns how to rediscover real, solidly based, lastinghealth.

Thebook is for all who are curious about the consequences ofvaccinations and palliative drugs, and how to correct these traumas throughthis powerful modality.

The translation from the French by Barry Mayburyis graceful and eloquent. The book itself is well written, well organized, and well indexed. It is generally presented in lay terms, with extensiveexamples from Dr. Elmiger's practice over the many years.

Dr. Elmigeris the originator of Sequential Homeopathic Therapy. This is the sourcework from which all other books on the subject have been based.

I think this book could be a find for anyone interested in medicien, homeopathy, health in the 20th century, and of course for all those interested in the New Age of medicine that is dawning with the the change from Newtonian to Einsteinian physics. The book was originally written in French and only recently became available in English ... Read more
