Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Hong Kong," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Hong Kong in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Hong Kong when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Hong Kong, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

This text presents an array of insights into Hong Kong's transition to China since the 1st July 1997 handover, from several perspectives around the region. Scholars from China, Taiwan, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and New Zealand undertake an analysis and synthesis of particular regional viewpoints on the transfer of sovereignty. Each contribution is positioned in relation to the three interconnected themes of economic transformation, political and legal developments, and identity which run through the volume. The sometimes contradictory and provocative insights highlighted by the authors emphasize the inherent complexities of Hong Kong's transition and the range of alternative regional perspectives it engenders. ... The Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardensis one of the oldest zoological and botanical centres in the world. It is located at Mid-levels, on the northern slope of Victoria Peak in Hong Kong and has been opened to the public since 1871. It is a venerable park and was previously named Ping Tao Garden. Bing Tau literally means the head of the soldiers or the Commander-in-Chief. Some said it was named such way by the Chinese because it was once the private garden of the governor. Other said Bing Tau was just the phonetic transliteration of the first two syllables of the word botanical. In the old days, many lovers liked to go there on a date. ... Read more

Product Description
Hong Kong has a long coastline that is full of twists and turns with many bays and beaches. Many of them are well sheltered by mountains nearby, as Hong Kong is a mountainous place. As a result, large waves seldom appear at the bays, making them suitable for swimming.mHowever, with the increasing development and urbanisation of Hong Kong, water quality has worsened resulting in the closure of several beaches previously suitable for swimming. These include Approach Beach, Ting Kau Beach, Anglers' Beach, Gemini Beaches, Hoi Mei Wan Beach, Casam Beach and Lido Beach in Tsuen Wan. The majority of beaches suitable for swimming in Hong Kong are managed by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, and are officially referred to as gazetted beaches. A number of other beaches are privately owned or not gazetted, but are nonetheless publicly accessible. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Enthnocentrism
Stein did present a lot of facts about this former British colony, but his subjective and prejudiced viewpoint in writing something aimed at young reader is disappointing. He constantly emphasised greed and arrogance of the Chinese people but his attitude reflected in the book is very much of an arrogant and snobbish nature, a very much biased view. In fact, I am surprised to know that he actually has a degree in history! The approach he has taken is quite unprofessional and lacks an in-depth view into the historical side of Hong Kong,A good example of ethnocentrism in historical research.

It is both sad and unfortunate for someone who knows nothing about the Chinese or Hong Kong to think what the author says is true. ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Soho district in Hong Kong is an entertainment zone located in Mid-levels and bordering Sheung Wan, within Central. The name is derived from its location: South of Hollywood Road, and it arguably extends up to and including Robinson Road. The Central-Mid-Levels escalator was built in 1993; the now vibrant character of Soho is attributed to the creation of the escalator system, which at the time was the longest escalator system in the world. Prior to the escalator construction, the area was populated by many elderley locals, old go-downs and porcelain shops. The area now consists of restaurants, bars, nightclubs, art galleries and antique stores of Staunton Street and Elgin Street. ... Read more

Product Description
This work is based on several years work in Hong Kong and Britain, both before and after the absorption of the Special Administration Region of Hong Kong into the People's Republic of China in 1997. The initial chapters review the history of Chinese people in Britain; specific aspects of Chinese culture and personality; Chinese educational systems; and the recent history of migration from Hong Kong to Britain. The central part of the book compares three samples of adolescents (about 350 in the two cultures): Chinese adolescents in Hong Kong and Chinese adolescents in Britain, with sub-divisions of those who have grown up in Britain and those recently arrived; and Chinese adolescents in Hong Kong. All of the 1050 respondents completed measures of self-concept, identity, educational aspirations and views about the family, society and the future. The final part of the book contains extended qualitative accounts from personal interviews with a sample of Chinese adolescents in Britain and concludes with proposals for educational and policy changes which can accomodate the aspirations of Chinese adolescents in the British educational system. ...
