Product Description

Remembering Awatovi is the engaging story of a major archaeological expedition on the Hopi Reservation in northern Arizona. Centered on the large Pueblo village of Awatovi, with its Spanish mission church and beautiful kiva murals, the excavations are renowned not only for the data they uncovered but also for the interdisciplinary nature of the investigations. In archaeological lore they are also remembered for the diverse, fun-loving, and distinguished cast of characters who participated in or visited the dig.

Hester Davis’s lively account—part history of archaeology, part social history—is told largely in the words of the participants, among whom were two of Davis’s siblings, artist Penny Davis Worman and archaeologist Mott Davis. Life in the remote field camp abounded with delightful storytelling, delicious food, and good-natured high-jinks. Baths were taken in a stock tank, beloved camp automobiles were given personal names, and a double bed had to be trucked across the desert and up a mesa to celebrate a memorable wedding.

Remembering Awatovi is illustrated with over 160 portraits and photographs of camp life. Essays by Eric Polingyouma and Brian Fagan enrich the presentation.

5-0 out of 5 stars What it was like at a Southwest archaeology field camp
For years I've been trying to find accounts of those legendary field camps in the Southwest. I'm much more interested in what people experienced than in what was found (although there's nothing wrong with that.) Finally, there is "Remembering Awatovi" about a 1935-1939 field camp run by Harvard in a long-deserted Hopi village. It is well-documented with lots of photos and ephemera and quotes from letters and journals. The people and the great times they had really come alive. I especially appreciated that the author mentioned her own efforts to find books on this topic--she didn't find much either, so the value of this book is clear. I was also able to see the accompanying exhibit at the Peabody Museum at Harvard (winter, 2009)so I got to see some of the actual pottery and artifacts they found. I couldn't put this book down and it's also got great notes and references. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A Quest for Truth
The first half of the book is a non-stop conspiracy theory rant on politics, religion, health care, and big business.I've heard all these theories before, and it's debatable how much of it is truth.Loaded with fear and anger, it's not of a high consciousness.

The second half to the book is kitchen sink spirituality. The author threw in everything he could, most of it as lecture style dialog. There are a number of excellent and insightful points, but for me they were not developed or delivered in a meaningful way.

As a story this book felt to me like a ripoff of "The Celestine Prophesy", pretty much the same formula, but this book was sorely lacking in story. The main character was paper thin, simply a stooge to say "Who, What, Where, How, When, and Why?" to give the author a platform to lecture on the subjects he wished to discuss. These lectures are then delivered by the heroine in a dry and cerebral fashion.I did not identify with either character, and the story never drew me in.

For the Hopi, land, religion, and life are one.For them, the practical activities of daily life are suffused with religious significance.Religious rituals, in turn, have practical ends, such as securing adequate rain, sufficient crops, good health, and long life.In this book, Loftin looks at the Hopi's timeless merging of the sacred and the profane as a student of religion. He explores twentieth-century Hopi religious history and cultural change by focusing on the interplay between Hopi myth and history, timelessness and the experience of time, continuity and change. He examines the tension between the Hopi's traditional, mythical religious orientation and the profound historical changes which the Hopi have witnessed during the past century. ... Product Description
The Hopi-Tewa woman called Nampeyo is recognized today as one of the most important artists of the American Southwest. Through her hands, the craft of Hopi pottery blossomed into the revival of an art form almost lost. By the opening of the twentieth century, Nampeyo's pots were being carried far beyond the Southwest to the showcases of New York and Europe.Mary Ellen and Laurence Blair's years of research have resulted in a landmark study of Nampeyo's life and work and how she handed down her skill and devotion to her daughters and grandchildren and inspired others to follow her lead.Extensively illustrated with hundreds of color and black-&-white photos, maps, and drawings.Notes, genealogy charts, references, index. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Outstanding!
The title says it and the book certainly delivers Nampeyo's legacy and much more.If a rating above five stars could be given, this book is deserving of such status.I'm not alone in my praise, as contemporary Native American authorities Bruce McGee and Mark Bahti consider the book to be a model of research, accuracy and thoroughness and an inspiration and landmark with comprehensive and meticulous research.Author Mary Ellen Blair and her husband are to be highly commended for over twenty years of research and numerous visits to the Hopi lands for interviews with Nampeyo's descendants. They left no stone unturned.A full twenty three pages of references are included ... from A - Z.With such extensive time and research one would expect such a book to be weighty and difficult to read. The opposite is true. All the facts and history, from ca 800 - 1700 to the mid 1990's are included. This book reads like a novel and the only problem I could find is that you can't put it down!Page after page and event after event, the reader is held captive by the writing.Mrs Blair pulls no punches as she names the Native Americans, Anglo Americans and Europeans who were caring and honest and she openly points to the dishonest and unscrupulous individuals (incl those in high government positions) who took advantage of Nampeyo and other artists for personal/monetary gain.I could continue with the highest praise for this book.I learned so much from it and I'm continuing to learn with every page.A thirty two page color portfolio is included which contains outstanding examples of Nampeyo's work and those of her descendants which are a real feast for the eyes. I would highly recommend this book to Hopi pottery collectors and to anyone who is interested in Native American/Hopi history from (esp) 1860 - 1940. ... Read more

Product Description
This is a first person look at a wide range of Pueblo, Hopi, Navajo, Zuñ, and Apache ceremonials in the late 1920s. This book is both an ethnographic document and a classic of Southwestern literature.

Erna Fergusson (1888-1964), a native New Mexican, was a talented writer and journalist. She earned a master's degree in Latin American studies at Columbia University, and worked for the Red Cross in rural northern New Mexico. She then worked for the Albuquerque Tribune. She founded Koshare Tours, a pioneering tour of Arizona and New Mexico Native American ceremonials. This book grew out of that experience.

Fergusson's writing style is spare and vigorous, filled with a sense of place and a deep appreciation of the desert high plateau region. Dancing Gods is well researched and sympathetic, and remarkably free of attitudes patronizing or idealizing Native Americans. --J.B. Hare ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Novice Kachina Collectors
As a relatively new collector of kachinas, I found this to be one of the three best guides for identifying vintage dolls, and also for garnering additional historical information on what each represents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kachinas: A Hopi Artist's Documentary
This is really a beautiful book. The pictures and descriptions are lovely and very authentic.I fell in love with so many kachinas in this book and wish I could collect more! I bought this when I knew only a little about kachinas and I learned a great deal about each character and along the way gained a real reverence for the Hopi's spirituality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kachinas: A Hopi Artist's Documentary
An essential for kachina collectors.Author Barton Wright is known as the authority on Hopi kachinas and this book (his major work) shows why. It contains descriptions of 255 kachinas, from the most "popular" to many lesser known and seldom carved dolls. The sketches by Cliff Bahnimptewa are very detailed ... some of the best in print. This book is certainly a "keeper" if you are a collector of this outstanding art of the Hopi. One to add to your library! ... Read more
