Product Description
A new twist on the old pet care books! These delightful books will help beginning readers reach informed decisions as to whether an animal would make an acceptable pet. Not all the animals covered in the series are suitable for every family. Each title provides simplified technical info about the species, including how the animal lives in the wild, how big it will get, and how long it lives. It also provides details on care of the pet, such as space requirements, how and what to feed it, health care, and handling. Once readers understand whether the animal would make a good pet, they are prepared to try to convince their parents they can . . . care for the pet. People have been drawn to horses throughout history, and it s easy to see why. Horses are strong, graceful, and intelligent animals. They enjoy attention and company from people, and they will bond strongly with their owners. Climb on the back of one and go for a ride, and your life will be forever different. But owning a horse doesn t just change your life, it becomes your life. Your horse will depend on you for everything food, water, exercise, and attention. And you can t exactly keep one in your living room. A horse is a huge responsibility, with equally huge rewards. Are you up for the challenge? And if you believe you are, can you convince your parents that you can care for a pet horse? ... Read more

Choosing a pet's a complicated process; particularly when it's as large as a horse. Horses: How To Choose And Care For A Horse joins others in the American Humane Pet Care Library series for elementary readers, talking about the selection, housing, diet and health of the pet for grades 3-4. 48 pages of facts blend photos with an easily-absorbed text and exciting details about owning a horse, supporting science curriculum studies in the process. Nor does it gloss over the negatives: "Horses are very expensive" says Jeffrey bluntly, and proceeds to explain the major upkeep needs of a horse.

5-0 out of 5 stars For all Owners of our Senior Partners
Hands-On Senior Horse Care: The Complete Book of Senior Equine Management and First Aid
For all coaches, horse managers and horse owners of senior horses. Especially those still used in riding programes. Great book highly recommended to all riding schools, RDA's etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for new horse owners
When we decided to add horses to our family, experienced horse people highly recommended purchasing older, experienced horses. So that is exactly what we did. This book has proven to be highly valuable to us.As stated in a previous review, it does say to call your vet at many of the symptoms. However, that is NOT a bad thing. The easy to follow charts included in each section clearly state if its something you can handle on your own, or if you need the help of a vet.It also tells you WHY you need the vet.It doesn't just state "Call your vet".

The chapters are easy to read and understand. The book covers both health and care for the older horse.I'm sure a lot of the care items would apply to younger horses also, but the book covers the specific needs of the older horse.

An experienced horse person would probably find this book to be a bore. However, it is ideal for the new horse owner, young or old.I highly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Essential for the Young Rider
This book, although not as specific and technical as many other books dealing with horse care, is a great reference for a teenage horse owner. Its language it simple to understand and gives reasons why certain changes occur and what to look out for. Adults would probably get frustrated at its simplicity but for a 12-18 year old this book offers a means to understand an aging horse and what to look out for in case a veterinarian needs to be called. Afterall, most young teenagers are spending lots of hours with their horses --maybe even moreso than working adults -- both monitoring general care and riding. This book provides an exceptional resource for this age group (nevermind being a good resource for a completely clueless adult parent!).

1-0 out of 5 stars Didn't Help with Crises
Since I bought this book, I've had three crises with my senior horse. And in each case, this book was useless. It didn't cover what to do when my horse came down with the neurological form of equine herpesvirus! For colic, it didn't mention Banamine.Banamine is no where in this book. For ulcers, it had minimal solutions.

Their formula for measuring a horse to determine its weight is for the metric system, not the English system we use.But they use inches, not meters.

Another ridiculous section -- they suggest using "cold-pressed" oils to add to your horse's feed.I checked into this -- these oils are EXPENSIVE!!!!

I thought this book would be wonderful. It's not.Save your money. The Internet has more useful and free sites.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource
This book features flow charts that help guide you through decision making processes when dealing with an older horse. Yes, many of the choices turn out to be call a vet. Maybe that's because most people won't look at a book until there is a medical problem in the first place. If you own a horse, then you are going to have to deal with having a veterinarian from time to time. And, think about this for a minute. If these people gave advice that said, oh don't call a vet, just do this or that, then how many lawsuits do you think they would face from owners of dead horses? This book helps you eliminate factors when deciding if you can take care of them at home, or call in a professional.
There's also a section covering how your horse ages and changes that take place. That's a nice section to have. You may notice the changes over the years, but having this book will make you look at your older horse with a new perspective. I think every barn who has a senior horse should have a copy of this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great informative Book!
This book from cover to cover and I felt that it covered important aspects of understanding horses and the care and maintenance of them as well.If you wish to inform yourself on own a horse or learning about care and handling the horse, I recommend this book to you!

2-0 out of 5 stars Far from complete
This book covers a lot of topics, but none of them in any detail. I've been taking lessons and leasing a horse for several years now and am considering taking the leap into owning a horse, and I was hoping to find a book that would give me a realistic idea of the expenses and responsibilities involved with actually keeping a horse. This is not that book.

This book might be fine to give to kids who just need a cursory understanding of horse care, but is not useful for anyone seriously considering buying or keeping horses.

5-0 out of 5 stars horse care
This book was a real help. A lot of good information. Would definately recommend to the new horse owner

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great DK book
This book is packed full of clear, concise information and wonderful pictures.I would recomment this book to anyone starting out with horses, which I assume is who this is written for.It is very informative and easy to understand. The 100's of great pictures are an added bonus, you don't usually see so many step by step pictures. It is informative enough for adults not to get bored, yet easy enough for the young horseman to understand as well. This is a terrific addition to any equine library.

4-0 out of 5 stars very informative - good reference manual for the young rider
This is a well written manual that contains all of the basics of caring for your horse, tack, and pasture. It's easy to read and understand, but doesn't insult your intelligence. There are plenty of colorful illustrations too.I bought this for my 10 year old daughter who recently received her first horse and is enrolled in horse riding and ground work lessons. She likes this book and thinks it's informative, but not necessarily "captivating" reading...afterall, it is a manual.I highly recommend this book to keep on your shelf as reference material for your junior rider. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book@
This is a very good book for horse owners to have on hand. I plan to lend this book to a close friend who just purchased her first horse this week. I know she will learn a lot by reading it and also learn "horse terms". Definitely would recommend!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Everything Horse Care Book
This is certainly an informative book, an excellent resource on the care of horses; however, it is also an exceptionally well written work that is a pleasure to read.I highly recommend The Everything Horse Care Book not only to horse owners, but to horse lovers as well.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a 'Beginner' book, but maybe not an 'Expert' book either.
All in all, there's quite a bit of information for folks who already own horses, although it makes me wonder-what did those owners do before they bought the book?As a newbie who's in the buying process, I was hoping for something a little more in-depth than the 'Dummies/Idiot's Guide' books, but found this hard to understand, primarily because there are hardly any illustrations. For instance, the chapter on shoeing and farriers mentions different horseshoe types, but never actually shows them.If I wanted to read the book and Google each term, it wouldn't be so bad, but that's obviously a hassle.
Long & short of it... I think the book is too advanced for the newbie, but is likely remedial for the experienced owner. My book, purchased at the local b&m, is going back today. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A horse health care book that doesn't mention colic?
This is a good basic book for beginners, but if you have any experience with horses at all it will be WAY to basic for you. it doesn't even mention colic! It should at least list the warning signs. The leg wrapping sections are useful, but really, does anyone really step by step instructions about how to put a blanket on a horse?

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for the new horse owner!
This is a great book for the new owner who hasn't been brought up aroung horses. It has great pictures and goes into a lot of detail about nutrition, vaccinations, illness/injury, age characteristics ect.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Beginner's Guide
This is truly for a first-horse owner or someone who is leasing a horse and who wants to learn the basics of horse health care.I found several of the chapters useful for treatments that I needed to give for the first time, but there are other sections that aren't as practical and there is a lot of space devoted to black and white photographs, which are not too useful either as it's difficult to look for differences in texture or coloration that the text elaborates on.Having said this, for a true beginner it is an adequate foundation and would be appropriate for a younger rider/reader as well.

2-0 out of 5 stars Only For Beginers
In my opinion, this book is not worth buying, unless you are truly a beginner. And even then, you will quickly outgrow this book.It contains practices that you can quickly pick up at the stable where your lessonsare. To learn them from others at your stable will more likely help you, because it will be in more detail and you will watch someone do it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book made owning a horse a lot easier
Without Cherry Hill and her books with all the pictures I am sure I would have been panicking at every little scratch on my horses. She explains things so a non-horse person can understand without having to run todictionaries or other horse reference books to look up her explaination.Ibuy all her books as I find them and enjoy her friendly way of writing. Thank you Cherry Hill for taking the time to make the explainationinteresting and informative. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cherry Hill's Horse Care for Kids: Grooming, Feeding, Behavior, Stable & Pasture, Health Care, Handling & Safety, Enjoying
The Cherry Hill books are all excellent books for horse owners. We purchased this particular title because it is written in simple laymen terms with super illustrated workds and explanation. The title may say "Horse Care for Kids" but we find it an excellent book to recommend to our miniature horse owners and to those who come through our Mini Boot Camp held two times per year in Austin, TX which teaches Equine Guided Interactions (EGI) so they can start up a 501c3 on their return to their community.

This book is really "Horse Care for people of all ages" - thank you Cherry Hill!

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a horse care book with supporting research and documentation
As the President and Executive Director of one of the largest all breed horse adoption programs in North America I've put over 2000 horses into homes and over 1700 I've personally cared for while they were in rehab or just waiting for us to find their forever home. I am now recommending this book to every horse adopter of ours.

All these new horse families and new horse people with our horses, many beginners and new horse owners are looking to anyone to give them advice. Often, sooooo often, they are given bad information from well meaning people who heard from Uncle Billy Bob that this or that was good for horses or they listened to a stranger on some crazy horse forum or just a girlfriend who has a horse and has not made any decisions based on research. I've heard all those things about copper being good to prevent parasites and all you have to do is get a feacal... WRONG!!

Instead of going to forums to ask your horse questions, pick up a well documented book that is supported by research.. don't go where people hide behind call signs or fake names, the internets enquirer and listen to someone that you have no clue their experience, their age, their education or training.

For years I did on line searches for university research that had been done for my answers but now Ann has saved me the time, all I have to do is look it up in her well referenced book. This needs to be read by every horse owner if you want to do the very best for your equine friend. Bravo!! ... Read more

Product Description
Cherry Hill, America's most trusted equine expert, teams up with Richard Klimesh, a professional farrier and her frequent writing partner, to address the twin topics of hoof care and horseshoeing. Proper hoof care is one of the most important contributors to a horse's health and well-being. Without sound, well-maintained hooves, an otherwise healthy horse can become lethargic, grouchy, and sullen. With healthy hooves, a horse's noble personality shines.

Horse Hoof Care covers what every horse owner needs to know about this critical key to a horse's overall health and performance. Hill and Klimesh explain the anatomy of the hoof, the role of the farrier, and all the principles of good care and maintenance. They also address the ongoing debate on whether or not to shoe and how to proceed with either choice. From addressing gait problems to training a horse for shoeing, and from feeding a balanced diet to performing daily hoof checks, if it affects horse foot health, it's covered here.

As with many aspects of horse care, daily routines and consistent treatment can prevent future problems, but even with the best care, horses may develop foot ailments. Readers will find comprehensive coverage of lost shoes, hoof cracks, thrush, clubfoot, contracted heels, and many other common problems, along with advice on treatment. A complete chapter on issues that require a veterinarian tells readers exactly what to look for and how to proceed.

Horse Hoof Care is the fifth book in Cherry Hill's Horsekeeping Skills Library, dedicated to giving horse owners the information they need to care for horses in every situation. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A very interesting book for horse caretakers
I think this book should be read by everyone who has to work with horses. Rich of useful notions on nearly every aspect of horsecare.

4-0 out of 5 stars equine nutrition
This book was purchased for a college class on equine nutrition. This book has lots of great info, but is not easy to read or understand. I had taken a previous course on livestock nutrition making it easier for myself to understand the formulas.

4-0 out of 5 stars very useful book
This is an incredibly detailed book, especially in terms of the nutritional needs of horses. The nutrient and ration tables in the back have been invaluable for tailoring diets specific to my horses' needs. My only complaint is that the second edition was published in 1996 and it is getting a bit dated. There is no discussion of the newer "nutraceutical" supplements on the market these days, or new research into topics already covered. I am hoping for a third edition, but I suspect I shouldn't hold my breath.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite horse related book
This book is very informative. We have 6 horses with different nutritional needs and this book is my favorite "go to" source. It has lots of tablesregarding optimal growth rate, nutrient needs etc. It has a very good section on deworming and much more. There are quite a few nutrition related books for less money, however, they are not as detailed as this one and often they cite this book as their source.

5-0 out of 5 stars Horse Owners Guide to Natural Hoof Care
I ordered this book Horse Owners Guide to Natural Hoof Care and it has been enlightening to say the least. My horse has been having hoof problems and I decided to order this book to see if it could help me in determining what was the best treatment for her. This book was well worth the money and I would recommend it to any horse owner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jaime Jackson does not disappoint.
Though I am only half way through this book, I have so far understood everything that Jaime Jackson explains about hoof trimming after the wild horse model. He takes an involved, though not difficult, subject and brings it within reach of the every person.

I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about, or executing, the natural hoof trim.

4-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational and specific
This guide, by pioneer Jaime Jackson, stands among the best natural hoof care guides, with enough photos and detailed drawings to help demystify even the hoof mechanisms of blood circulation and hoof wall loading. I have already been trimming my own horse for a year, but now I feel increased confidence about my trimming techniques, and an even clearer mental image of the goal of balance and natural wear for my horse.

I also recommend very highly any of Pete Ramey's books, probably the most famous of Mr. Jackson's proteges.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative, beware binding
I bought this book to use for a horse class at a local college. My first warning is the binding! It doesn't take long, or too many times of opening the book before the glue comes undone and sections of the book fall out. I tried my best to be delicate to avoid this from happening but, it still came apart.
Some of the information is written in a confusing manner and some things are not entirely up to date. The non-updated information is not abundant and one can still learn plenty of information by reading this book.
The book does cover everything from the possible cost to the mechanics of a horse, and many other things. It is a good book to have if you're new to horses. But, I would only buy it if you can find a cheap price on it. Simply because of the binding falling apart.

4-0 out of 5 stars good reference
i needed this book for a class, it came and i am happy with it. it has helpful information and is a good reference for horses

5-0 out of 5 stars Horses: A Guide To Selection, Care And Enjoyment
Very informative and helpful for a new owner or beginner. It is a textbook worth having.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
I was expecting a book about the care, feeding, breeding and perhaps some history on the various horse breeds, and I was expecting photos. The care feeding and breeding information is there, but not much on the breeds, and what VERY FEW photos or drawings are included are ALL in black and white. The ONLY color picture is on the cover. This is probably why they don't let you see much from the Look Inside because people might not buy this book after they got to flip through it.I believe the information is helpful but it is sorely lacking in illustrations. We will keep it, but I would not reccomend it to anyone unless they are looking for a dry college text, or possibly an informational reference. It isn't a "fun" book by any means. My family is dissapointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text used at local community college

I originally got 'Raising Horses', from the library. My daughter's horse had a 'baby'(our first). This book held so much, and such great information that my family decided to order this book and 'Training Horses', both by Heather Smith Thomas.I highly recommend Ms Thomas books to anyone, at any horse knowledge level.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best
Out of all the horse care books I have read.. This one is very clear and covers most every area in raising horses. Anyone looking for a good horse care book, this one is the best I have found. I have other horse care books but I refer to this one the most.

4-0 out of 5 stars My equine science bible
I have owned, raised, and trained my own horses from a very young age and even though I already know the basics, I found this book to be very useful. From basic horse keeping to in depth descriptions of many equine health problems, this book is one that even the experienced rider and horse owner should have. It contains fabulous drawings and seperates each sections accordingly. I have not found a basic question that this book couldn't answer. It is a must have for any horseman.

The horse, whether a working animal on the ranch, or at the race track, or is simply a personal recreational companion, is susceptible to a host of potential health problems that alert owners and handlers must be aware of in terms of the care provided them. In "The Whole Horse Wellness Guide: Natural And Conventional Care for A Healthy Horse", author Diane Morgan (who over the years has owned Thoroughbreds, Quarter Horses, Arabians, and Morgans) with the assistance of veterinarian Doug Knueven (a pioneer in holistic pet care and owner of the Beaver Animal Clinic, a full service animal hospital in Beaver County, Pennsylvania) provide with an illustrated instructional reference that addresses such equine health and medical issues as mainstream medical practices and surgical treatments, nutritional wellness and therapeutic healing, bodywork, acupuncture, acupressure and Shiatsu; energetic medicine, homeopathy, western herbal medicine; Chinese herbal medicine, ayurvedic medicine, aromatherapy and essential oils, and flower essences. Of special note is the section devoted to 'Common Equine Diseases and Treatment Options'. Enhanced with the addition of a glossary, a resources list, and an index, "The Whole Horse Wellness Guide" is a welcome and thoroughly 'user friendly' addition to personal, professional, academic, and community library reference collections and supplemental reading lists.
