This digital document is a journal article from International Journal of Industrial Ergonomics, published by Elsevier in 2004. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
Industrially developed countries have historically relied on manufacturing of goods to achieve and maintain their economic status. In recent years, these developed societies have increased their reliance on technology, particularly automation, to enhance manufacturing productivity. Excessive reliance on automation technology may be undesirable if the overall goal is to enhance productivity of manufacturing enterprises. A human-centered approach to modern manufacturing may be more effective based on actual productivity gains, economics, technical feasibility and equipment capability and reliability, and problems created by automated manufacturing technologies. In this paper, we examine several technological issues pertaining to advanced manufacturing technology systems. We conclude that human presence in such systems is essential to compensate for technological limitations, and that a human-centered approach to designing manufacturing systems can provide most benefit for productivity, reliability, economy and flexibility. We also focus on limitations of the human component in a human-centered manufacturing system. Specifically, we discuss stress management, worker training, human error, human information processing limits, and human-machine interface design issues, all of which limit effectiveness of humans in manufacturing. Relevance to industry: Recognizing the interdependence of advanced technology and humans in an advanced manufacturing technology system will enable industries to manage and design such systems for improved system performance. ... Product Description
This digital document is a journal article from Journal of Hazardous Materials, published by Elsevier in 2004. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
A variety of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs; O"3/OH^-, H"2O"2/UV, Fe^2^+/H"2O"2, Fe^3^+/H"2O"2, Fe^2^+/H"2O"2/UV and Fe^3^+/H"2O"2/UV) have been applied for the oxidative pre-treatment of real penicillin formulation effluent (average COD"0=1395mg/L; TOC"0=920mg/L; BOD"5,"0~0mg/L). For the ozonation process the primary involvement of free radical species such as OH? in the oxidative reaction could be demonstrated via inspection of ozone absorption rates. Alkaline ozonation and the photo-Fenton's reagents both appeared to be the most promising AOPs in terms of COD (49-66%) and TOC (42-52%) abatement rates, whereas the BOD"5 of the originally non-biodegradable effluent could only be improved to a value of 100mg/L with O"3/pH=3 treatment (BOD"5/COD, f=0.08). Evaluation on COD and TOC removal rates per applied active oxidant (AOx) and oxidant (Ox) on a molar basis revealed that alkaline ozonation and particularly the UV-light assisted Fenton processes enabling good oxidation yields (1-2mol COD and TOC removal per AOx and Ox) by far outweighed the other studied AOPs. Separate experimental studies conducted with the penicillin active substance amoxicillin trihydrate indicated that the aqueous antibiotic substance can be completely eliminated after 40min advanced oxidation applying photo-Fenton's reagent (pH=3; Fe^2^+:H"2O"2 molar ratio=1:20) and alkaline ozonation (at pH=11.5), respectively. ... Product Description
This digital document is a journal article from Journal of Hazardous Materials, published by Elsevier in 2007. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
In order to have energy and cost effective separation of dyes, a combination of advanced oxidation process (AOP) using Fenton's reagent and nanofiltration (NF) is proposed. Three combinations of AOP and NF are studied using a synthetic solution of eosin dye. Scheme-1 is AOP followed by NF. Scheme-2 is NF followed by AOP. And Scheme-3 is two-step NF. The concentration of eosin dye studied in the first step of each of the schemes is in the range of 70-200mg/l. The operating transmembrane pressures for NF steps are 552, 689 and 828kPa. The crossflow velocities are 0.46, 0.69 and 0.91m/s. The schemes are compared for permeate flux, permeate concentration and duration of operation. In Scheme-1, AOP is conducted for 30min, and then subjected to NF, whereas in Scheme-2, the time needed for AOP is more than 3h to achieve the concentration level of the dye below 1mg/l. Thus, it is found that Scheme-1 is superior to Scheme-2 due to lesser time requirement. However, Scheme-3 involving no AOP, is also suitable for dye separation as the final eosin concentration in the permeate falls below 1mg/l. Scheme-1 is found suitable for dye concentration of 70mg/l and the most appropriate composition of Fenton's reagent is 1665mg/l of H"2O"2 and 347.5mg/l of FeSO"4.7H"2O. Suitable NF operating conditions in step 2 of Scheme-1 is transmembrane pressure of 689kPa and crossflow velocity of 0.91m/s. In Scheme-3, the suitable operating conditions for NF in both the steps are 828kPa transmembrane pressure and 0.91m/s crossflow velocity. Scheme-2 is found to be unsuitable. ... Read more

Description:
In the academic ranks of schooling, writing tasks move gradually from a focus on the transmission of knowledge to the transformation of knowledge. As a more complex writing task, knowledge-transforming requires writers to engage in the rhetorical act of persuading readers of their work's value, significance, and credibility. At the graduate level, writers may be wrestling with these issues for the first time, often discovering this more occluded rhetorical dimension only after they have become somewhat more comfortable with issues of generic form or subject-matter content. This paper explores the nature and role of rhetorical knowledge in advanced academic literacy through the writing of two multilingual writers. As these writers engage in high-stakes writing tasks, their rhetorical knowledge of disciplinary writing becomes more explicit and more sophisticated, influenced by mentoring, disciplinary participation, identity, and task exigency. ... This digital document is a journal article from Desalination, published by Elsevier in 2006. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
During the past few years, Kuwait has been encouraging the development of alternative water resources. This stems from the fact that the available natural water resources are scarce, and water demands are growing due to increasing population growth. A potential alternative water resource which may replace existing water resources for non-potable use is renovated wastewater. Currently, a huge amount of municipal wastewater is conventionally treated in Kuwaiti sewage treatment plants, and a major portion of this treated effluent is discharged to the Gulf. Advanced treatment of treated wastewater would yield a better quality effluent which can be used as an alternative water resource and therefore reduces the demand on fresh and brackish water supplies. The potential for using advanced treated wastewater in meeting the growing water demands in the State of Kuwait was explored. ... Read more
