Description:
In this paper a generic model for life cycle inventory (LCI) data collection is presented and applied to a product system of a Digital System Telephone (DST). It is shown that the intermediate unit processes (IUPs) are of global warming importance. Compared to earlier efforts in the field of environmental life cycle assessment of electronic products, this model enables a more partitioned LCA result, with respect to both components and processes. In our model the components are first divided into main groups and then into sub-groups. This division results in process modules for unit processes, some of which are similar to the ongoing components, thus, reducing the computational effort. The model is demonstrated for a ''cradle-to-gate'' calculation focusing on greenhouse gas emissions. Using scenario analysis for integrated circuits and printed wiring boards, the possible contribution from IUPs was analysed. ... Read more

Description:
Four years of time-exposure images of Palm Beach, Sydney, Australia, are used to: (a) develop a phenomenological scheme based on surf zone properties for the classification of the four intermediate beach states [low tide terrace (LTT), transverse bar rip (TBR), rhythmic bar beach (RBB), and longshore bar trough (LBT)] identified by Wright, L.D., Short, A.D., 1984. Morphodynamic Variability of Surf Zones and Beaches. Marine Geology, 56 93-118; and (b) determine environmental conditions associated with the different beach states. The overall agreement between beach state classifications obtained by visual classifications of images and those predicted by the phenomenological scheme exceeds 90%. Analysis of time series of intermediate beach states and wave data indicates that the nearshore morphology continuously cycles through the four beach states in response to variations in the incident wave energy. The results also indicate that LBT morphology is produced by high-energy wave conditions (erosive), while the progression towards LTT occurs under lower waves (accretive). A depth-averaged morphodynamic model is employed to determine the morphodynamic processes governing the RBB to TBR and TBR to LTT transitions. Model results indicate that the RBB to TBR transition is governed by the erosion of the original longshore bars (in the initial RBB morphology) and the formation and subsequent welding of shoals in the lee of the original longshore bars. Model results also indicate that RBB to TBR transitions can occur under shore normal and oblique wave conditions. The TBR to LTT model simulations indicate that, under obliquely incident waves, progressive erosion of the transverse shoals and deposition of the eroded sediment in rip channels gradually diminishes the longshore variability in morphology, resulting in an LTT morphology. ... Description:
The validity of predictions derived from the intermediate disturbance hypothesis (IDH) was tested in situ by manipulating mussel dominated Western Baltic fouling communities. Assemblages of two different successional stages, 3 and 12 months old, underwent a 3-month period of disturbance treatment in terms of various frequencies of emersion. Emersion frequency levels ranged from 1x15 to 48x15 min emersion day^-^1. The study on the 3-month-old communities was repeated in 2 subsequent study years. Species richness, evenness and diversity (Shannon index) were recorded to measure the effects of frequency treatments on community structure. The IDH was confirmed in the first year, when diversity was found to be a unimodal function of the applied emersion frequency gradient. Diversity-disturbance relationships were inverse unimodal or non-significant in the second year, which was true for both successional stages. This ambiguous picture partially confirms the validity of the mechanisms proposed by the IDH, but also shows that their forcing can be masked by fluctuations in environmental parameters, such as climatic conditions. Diversity increased again under severe disturbance conditions, due to a disturbance-induced change in community structure, namely the shift from mussel to algal dominance. This is a new aspect in the discussion concerning disturbance-diversity relationships. ... Read more

Description:
This paper describes how data collected during a continuously running data acquisition program on the LESO building in Lausanne, Switzerland, was used to measure the intermediate light switch probability by users as a function of current illuminance levels, i.e. the probability for a given timestep that the user will switch on or off the electric lighting, excluding such actions that happen upon user entry to or exit from the office. We assume such a probability to be independent of the user's history and further derive some theoretical consequences of this postulate. In particular, we show how a history-less user leads naturally to patterns of behaviour already observed in real buildings. ... Read more

Description:
In this study, an aqueous solution of purified, hydrolyzed C.I. Reactive Red 120 (RR 120, Color Index), was selected as a model to investigate the degradation pathways and to obtain additional information on the reaction intermediate formation. The dye was purified to avoid the influence of the impurities on the ozonation process and on the formation of oxidation by-products. To simulate the dye-bath effluents from dyeing processes with azo reactive dyes, a hydrolyzed form of the dye was chosen as a representative compound. High performance liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry and its tandem mass spectrometry was chosen to identify the decomposition pathways and reaction intermediate formation during the ozonation process. In addition total organic carbon and high performance ion chromatography analysis were employed to obtain further information on the reaction processes during ozonation. Purified, hydrolyzed RR 120 was decomposed under the direct nucleophilic attack by ozone resulting in oxidation and cleavage of azo group and aromatic ring, while the triazine group still remained in the solution even after prolonged oxidation time (120min) due to its high resistance to ozonation. Phenol, 1,2-dihydroxysulfobezene, 1-hydroxysulfonbezene were detected as the degradation intermediates, which were further oxidized by O"3 and .OH to other open-ring products and then eventually led to simple oxalic and formic acid identified by HPIC. ... Description:
The study investigates what an intermediate success rate means in bonobos, chimpanzees, and orangutans. Apes participated in liquid conservation experiments where they had to track the larger of two different quantities of juice after various kinds of transformations [Suda, C., & Call, J. (2004). Piagetian liquid conservation in the great apes (Pan paniscus, Pan troglodytes, and Pongo pygmaeus). Journal of Comparative Psychology, 118, 265-279). When making a decision, apes sometimes demonstrated hesitant behavior, concurrently pointing to both alternatives or successively changing their choice. Moderately successful apes showed more hesitation than highly successful or unsuccessful apes. The results are consistent with the cognitive conflict model: The experiments created a higher degree of cognitive conflict on moderately successful apes than on very successful or unsuccessful apes. This indicates that an intermediate performance reflects the joint operation and potential conflict between two different cognitive strategies (identity and appearance) inherent to the Piagetian conservation task. ... Description:
Starburst dendrimer polyamidoamine (PAMAM) is an ellipsoidal tree-like macromolecule with a well defined structure and many more amino groups than conventional macromolecules, which can be used to catalyze water dissociation in a bipolar membrane according previous work. The purpose of this research is to discover the effect of the coordinated complex between PAMAM G4 and Cr(III) on water dissociation in a bipolar membrane. The coordinated reaction between G4 and Cr(III) was investigated by UV-VIS absorption spectroscopy, and finally the molar ratio Cr(III)/G4 was chosen as 20. The I-V curves showed that the coordinated complex could be applied to accelerate water dissociation in a bipolar membrane, and the accelerative or catalytic effect was more prominent than separated G4 or Cr(III). Furthermore, the V-t curves showed that the coordinated complex in the intermediate layer was comparatively chemically stable, namely G4 had the function of fixing Cr(III) ions in the intermediate layer. Thus, it is expected that a bipolar membrane with high efficiency and comparative stability can be prepared by applying the coordinated complex between G4 and Cr(III) as the intermediate layer. ...
