Product Description
Secret Genealogy is a “must read” for those who want to trace their ancestry into antiquity.

Suellen Ocean believes that many American surnames were originally of Jewish descent. “There are millions of people out there who don’t know who they descend from. Americans should reopen their family albums and look deeper into the meanings of names in their family trees and symbols in their coats of arms. Names like Levi, Jacob, Benjamin, Rebecca, Sarah, Ezekiel and Hester and symbols such as the lion may have been the last opportunity many parents had to lay claim to a heritage that stems back thousands of years.”

Does your Grandfather have an Old Testament Biblical name? If the author’s hypothesis is correct, America was built on a much stronger Jewish foundation than what was originally thought by historians.

You’ll be fascinated with the origins of your surname and you’ll comprehend the names of rivers and streams, oceans and continents in a different light, wondering… what do they really mean?

Be prepared to let go of all your previous assumptions. Have fun with Suellen Ocean while she brainstorms through Secret Genealogy. ... Read more

Product Description
This is the standard work on the Huguenot emigration to America. Baird's workis so thorough that there are few Huguenot names for which some new fact or illustration is notsupplied. The bulk of the work is devoted to the important emigration of French Protestants (viathe Netherlands and Great Britain) in the last quarter of the 17th century to the time of theRevolutionary War. Throughout the text, in both narratives and records, there is a profusion ofgenealogical detail on the early Huguenot families of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey,New York, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and Virginia, later families having dispersed toPennsylvania and other states. In addition, extensive genealogical notices are given in footnotes, with references to sources, thus serving as a guide to further information. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible on Huguenot Travels...
I am Huguenot by descent but had NO idea what these people had suffered. To read diary entries and personal accounts was thrilling.

It was written in the 1860's (I think) so no photos. It's about 9x12,802pgs.It's not a coffee table book. Mine came without a dust jacket, but oh wow...what's inside. If you order it, you'll love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Aid in Genealogical Research
If your family genealogy leads to the Huguenots - this book is a must.It was a fabulous research tool in my search.
Even if you are not a student of genealogy, the story of our early settlers struggling in search of religious freedom is inspiring.
I highly recommend this book.

I read this book in 15 minutes. There are about two pages of historical information. The other pages are just lists of families with no background or details. A real waste of money.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Engaging History
I bought this book because I have several ancestors who were Huguenots that settled in Purrysburg, S.C.I wanted to know something of what made them tick. I understood their religious convictions while in France or Switzerland, but why did they not maintain their Calvinistic traditions? This book helped to answer some of my questions.

It doesn't give a detailed history of the Huguenots and their great struggles in Europe, although it does give a very good sketch of it. It gives just enough history to get them to the S.C. colony. But it does offer invaluable information of each of the Huguenot colonial towns.

But this was more than just a narrow history of the Huguenots in N. America. It also opened my eyes to the socio-economic conditions of colonial South Carolina, and how these brave people contributed to the overall benefit of the colony.Worth the read if you are interested in colonial history of the South, or of these religiously persecuted people. ... The story told here of is one of adaptation and determination as the petty noble. Lacger family of Castres in southwestern France evolved -- and sometimes advanced their position--through the tr6ubled times of the Reformation and Wars of Religion, an all too brief period of tolerance, and the later proscription, of Protestantism. In the early 15oos, the family emerged from obscurity, some later attained influential posts and amassed considerable fortunes. While some family members embraced Catholicism for professional gain, family concerns were stiff important, as many then bequeathed their fortunes to Protestant family members.
