5-0 out of 5 stars Different and worth a buy
There are many books which one refers back from time to time. I purchased this book with a bit of skepticism since I was aware that this book will not be enriching me with 'so-called' HR knowledge as I gathered from author's blog.

Book is divided into 3 different categories containing a total 21 subcategories. Basically these 3 categories are:

1) What your Boss can't/won't tell you (9 subcategories like: what after you mess up, 5 minute weekly career investment, how to ace your own review etc.)
2) Attract better HR opportunities (6 subcategories like: Leading & not waiting, how to use everyday meetings etc.)
3) Engaging other for your HR career (6 subcategories like: how to for HR networking, HR Godfathers etc.)

I found myself going back to this book more often because this book was the only 'mentor' I could find at times for a honest truth. Many a times anecdotes themselves made understanding some processes much simpler. It helps to have practical tips and guidance on day to day issues like how to handle meetings, or how not to speak up. Then books also beautifully captures actions an HR professional needs for a fulfilling long term career.

I got my worth of book from 1 small anecdote in the book wherein one HR Manager was complaining about laid-back attitude of her Boss. And she was advised that 'you have many brilliant ideas which actually doesn't require senior mgmt approvals, so what are you waiting for?'

I recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!!!! Love it!
What book!I couldn't put it down! Mr. Collin's intentions were evident; to educate, enlighten, reveal andempower those who want more for their HR career. He also manages to debunk and challenge many scripts that we have embraced along the way.

This book covers so many topics. It will appeal to the sensibilities of the entry level, mid-level and seasonedHR Professional. It's certainly a truepractical guide for navigating your HR career. While this book caters to HR professional please note the principles, advise and stories transcend HR. Great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a MUST READ
Alan shares his experience in a true down to earth style that reflects the true world of HR. This is a MUST READ for anyone in the HR field, especially those just entering into it. If you are just starting out in your HR career, Alan has some very insightful thoughts that can give you a jump start and put you way ahead of your competition! Read on!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not a big fan of HR books, but this one is the exception.
In general, I am not a big reader of HR human resources books. The ones I have read, I have found to be too academic and full of theory that is hard to follow, much less apply. They all have proven quite forgettable. This book is different which is why I was compelled to write a review."Unwritten HR Rules" was written in a conversational, "plain speak" fashion that used real life examples. The author brought texture to the content.I could project myself into the situations; they seemed very relevant and applicable to me and my challenges. The quality of the advice coupled with the examples taken from Collins' seemingly endless experiences in HR makes this book memorable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read this book every two months
Awesome book.I like the fact that in the book Collins gives you principles that you can adapt to your own HR career situation and lots of illustrative examples. For instance, in marketing yourself and youraccomplishments, he talks a great deal about playing to your strengths and gives some greatexamples of HR people, who you can identify with, who have done just that.He talks authentically about his own successes and failures and in a way that you can learn from. Read this book once, quickly. It should not take more than a couple of hours.Mark out the sections that appeal to you. Then go back to it every two months or so and read it again or at least the highlighted sections. Figure out how you can adapt and USE the points he makes. And then you will get the full value of this great book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Made HR Class Much More Engaging
I used this casebook for the first time in a graduate-level public sector human resource management course in the Spring of 2007.I essentially structured the course around the case studies, using a basic survey text as a supplement. The student response was strongly positive.I had them do weekly writing assignments based on the cases, and we started each class meeting by discussing the cases. This approach made the subject matter much more real and practical to the students, and as a result they all excelled. If I have any criticisms of the book, they are: 1) many of the cases that are labeled as something other than a disciplinary matter are actually disciplinary matters. So there is less variety to the cases than a look at the table of contents indicates.2) For such a slim book, the price tag is quite high! ... As a doctorate student, my pockets are empty and books are expensive. The recent purchase was in great condition and I even saved a little time because a couple of chapters were already highlighted.I would strongly recommend doing business with this vender. The book arrived in a timely manner and again in great condition.

4-0 out of 5 stars Human Resource Class
This book is very informative and is really up to date on the latest laws and trends in HR.However, it is a very dry read.

3-0 out of 5 stars Human Resource Function
The first couple of chapters have a lot of information which leaves the reader overwhelmed and not quite grasping the point of the book: (chapter 1) The Human Resource Function in Perspecitve and (chapter 2) Strategic Planning and the Human Resource Function. At times the authors do not completely explain what they are talking about or mention something and never explain it. However, the remainder of the chapters are broken down into components of what the functions of human resource encompass. The chapters don't completely match the authors' list on page 4, but most of them are covered: information technology; recruitment and selection; induction; development; performance appraisal; compensation; employment continuity; and unionism. I was very confused after reading the first couple of chapters, but as I finished the book, I was able to go back and reread the first two chapters which then made more sense. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book Purchase
the book i purchased was in the condition promised and was everything i expected it to be. great transaction. will do business again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very similar to 5th edition
I ordered this textbook because the course I was taking was written on this edition (4th) and college bookstore shipped the 5th edition. Both editions are similar however some of the "non-necessary" jargon and text was taken out of the 5th edition so having this edition made my course a success. There is a Case Study in the 4th edition that does not appear in the 5th so for other students looking for that Case Study I am sure the college got many emails. I had it all as I had both editions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for my College Course

4-0 out of 5 stars Movin' up
This was the text required for my personnell management class. (200 level) I have the Bohlander 13th ed. which is a better text, being better organised. But after going through this book I liked it as well. The last chapter on international HR issues was especially helpful. I have adapted the expatriate worker technoques to address interdepartmental issues in my organization. I understand there will be a new edition out in June 2006. Perhaps it will be better organized.

In so doing it details how these fields, along with a growing body of research, have contributed to the development of the theoretical and philosophical foundations and HRDs emergence as a unique discipline. This is not a quick "how-to" book but rather a scholarly examination of the core beliefs, values, worldview, and principles that are the framework for HRD. It will be of primary interest to academics, scholars, and researchers. It also offers reflective practitioners the opportunity to re-examine the beliefs, values, and approaches that guide their work. The book is logically organized, well written, and replete with diagrams, models, and graphics that illustrate and clarify key concepts. Sure to become a classic text and reference, I highly recommend it to anyone who seeks to develop a deeper understanding of Human Resource Development.

Product Description

Personnel costs make up 75 to 85 percent of the typical school district budget. Because personnel are so important to the achievement of the goals and objectives of an educational system, human resources administration is of central importance.

The new fifth edition of Human Resources Administration allows those studying the field to learn relevant laws and policies, explore the application of computer technology, and discover successful collective negotiation strategies. For further success, this text helps readers develop integrated planning processes and communication systems while fostering a relationship of mutual respect and cooperation among the staff, the administration, and the school board.

The revised fifth edition includes increased coverage of various topics as well as a number of new features. A new chapter on staff development discusses effective staff development programs as well as five key steps in the staff development process while added coverage on the applications technology to the human resources field brings the text up to date. Case studies in each chapter help readers apply what they have just read to realistic situations in the workplace while visual organizers such as charts and tables add easy-to-understand illustrations of chapter concepts and lessons. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Buy
This textbook arrived quickly and in perfect condition.Additionally, I have found the book to be an easy read, thoughtfully organized, and helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Human Resources for Educators
Human Resources Administration: Personnel Issues and Needs in Education (4th Edition)

This book is used in a principal certification program at a 4 year graduate school. The text is current and covers all of the issues that educators at any point in their careers must muddle through. It offers 3 short case studies at the end of each chapter and a summary of the chapter. Each chapter has clear learning objectives, with tables and charts that are easy to understand.

I would recommend this book to all graduate students in education, as it covers not only school districts, but also issues such as evaluations, strategic planning, collective bargaining and compensation issues.

It tells about the legal authority for states to act on behalf of the community in educating its children in public schools.I believe it is a thorough and cogent book that will assist professors with scenarios about real life work as principals.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not As Good As Rebore's But Well Put Together
I find this book rewarding, but maybe a bit too undescriptive. For rising school administrator, the need for a well-paced, info-packed textbook on personnel administration looms large.

If you get this one, please get another one if you can.

2-0 out of 5 stars Human Resource Administration:Personnel Issues and Needs in Education (4th Edition)
The textbook is fairly general in its coverage of the issues comfronting human resource administrators in the educational arena today. Moreover, the book is totally lacking in the areas of labor relations, i.e contract negotiations and the interface of human resources with other components of the educational systems such as administrative/business services or educational services. While the book is written by renowned authors from the University of Arizona, their viewpoint is skewed because is appears that most of their information is drawn from their experiences with schools districts in Arizona, a right to work state. The best part of the book is the chapter on human resources adminisration: past present and future.
Overall, the textbook might be useful to someone who was new to the field of human resources and had no prior experience in the education field. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Wrong Edition
I received the wrong edition. I ordered the 2nd Edition, but got the 3rd edition

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Wordy! LOL!
This book is great, but at the same time it is extremely wordy. It would be nice if it had more examples, case studies, charts and graphs rather than mostly words to convey messages. Personally, I am more of a visual person, so for me, this is over the top.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mislead
The condition of the book was listed as new but it definitely was not. There were highlights and markings throughout the book.It was actually in good condition but like I said, definitely not new.

3-0 out of 5 stars Strategic HR Management
The provider sent this out immediately - I thought I might not get the book in time for class but it was at my home in just a few days.I give the provider 5 stars for efficiency and timely delivery.I wasn't expecting the book to come from a company in Maylasia. The only problem that I've discovered in the book - and I have not asked classmates if their book has this - but there were quite a few typos in the book.Since these go through substantial editing, I wasn't sure if I had gotten a copy of the final version of the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Finally, an HR Text that Focuses on Strategy
This is a great textbook for the instructor that wants to focus on HR strategy.Practically the entire first half of the book deal with strategic issues. My only concern however is that it is woefully out of date - four years old - and some of the materials show it!I have used this text for several years in graduate classes that I teach. ... You'll see how to support your managerial decisions - from how much HR staff is needed to how much to spend on HR services - with hard numbers obtained from easy-to-apply formulas and benchmark database examples. Authors Jac Fitz-enz and Barbara Davison expertly demonstrate how you can: evaluate all your human resources activities and costs, including: staffing, training, HRIS services, employee turnover, employee absence control, and the pay and benefits system; and, collect data on costs, time, and the quantity and quality of work. The book includes another new chapter on employee communications - which is at the heart of leading the new employee - as well as expanded coverage of the role of technology, now the driving force in HR management. 4-0 out of 5 stars Medicion de resultados
Excelente libro para quienes en RRHH debemos demostrar con cifras los logros de nuestra labor.
Esta lleno de buenas ideas para tener una eficiente medida del desempeño del area de Recursos Humanos.

5-0 out of 5 stars The pioneer in HR Metrics
Jac Fitz-enz is the man who started the "HR Metrics" revolution in the early 1980s and in this book he introduces the topic is a simple, easy manner that will appeal to the beginner and advanced readers. This is a book written primarily for the HR professional and therefore, some basic understanding of the various HR functions is assumed. If you're considering a primer on HR metrics or looking to buy just one book that will provide the basics as well as serve as reference, then this is the book. You may also want to consider the more advanced "The ROI of Human Capital: Measuring the Economic Value of Employee Performance" if you want a more in-depth understanding of the topic.

Fitz-enz divides the book to seven parts with the first part of the book (Part 1) focusing on "Why measure HR." These are arranged in 4 chapters that present a compelling picture for using and implementing HR metrics as well as several pointers on implementing viable and effective HR systems.

In each of the subsequent six parts, one of the main functions of human resources is discussed with specific chapters on all relevant HR activities and numerous metrics and detailed examples to demonstrate how to use and apply the metrics. The areas covered include:

Part 2: Hiring and staffing including workforce planning, recruiting and the hiring process.
Part 3: Compensation and benefits divided into a chapter on compensation and another on benefits.
Part 4: Training & development including e-learning; knowledge management; leadership and management development; career management; and organization development.
Part 5: Employee relations and retention with chapters on orientation; absenteeism and turnover; and labor relations.
Part 6: e-HR. The chapter on workforce analytics is excellent and probably the best introduction to the topic I've come across. There's also a second chapter on communicating and reporting outcomes.
Part 7:Alternative methods such as outsourced call centers and employee self-service.

Product Description
Human Resources are the most important resource that a firm commands and should be regarded as capital, a factor of production in which managers invest today in order to realize future profits. This book deals with the strategic implications of Human Resource Management as an important strategic asset and emphasizes its importance within the overall strategy of the firm. The book covers issues such as job design, evaluation, recruitment, training, career concern, and outsourcing and downsizing. The linkage between the various pieces of HRM policy are stressed and how the policies are related to management issues such as TQM, just-in-time manufacturing, and others. The book is aimed at the general manager, not the HRM practitioner and it stresses conceptual frameworks, not procedural methodology. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars superb text in modern micro theory applied to human resource management
To get an idea what this text is about if you are an economist, or an economics student, start your reading in chapter 4 Employment and Economics. There you will realise that almost nothing you learned as an undergrad in economics - demand and supply, consumer optimization, neoclassical cost functions, monopoly oligopoly and competitive industries - will prepare you for understanding employment relationships. But the economics for which Oliver Williamson just got his Nobel prize will matter - and Kreps and Baron are wonderful expositors of this sort of economic theory....not in the abstract, but applied to employment relationships/transactions.

Employment is often an open-ended transaction, with the detail specified only as time passes (after the transaction has been entered into) and relevant contingencies arise - salaries/commissions in years ahead, future promotion prospects, future job assignments, etc. Just how these details are filled in depends on a system of interlocking factors and behaviors: decision making rights and privileges specified in law (common law or legislation or both), by explicit, but incomplete, contractual details, and most importantly by tradition and common practices that have evolved with some history. But why do these customs have any force? Why does anyone believe them? Well one problem in an employment relationship, on either or both employer and employee sides, is that as time passes and the relationship matures both parties may face large costs of switching to alternatives - alternative jobs, or alternative workers. Replacing and retrainingskilled knowledgeable workers may be costly, especially if it has to be done quickly in a time of high product demand - and those workers may know that; Finding alternative jobs with comparable pay and with comparable skillsin alternative locations may be costly for workers - and employers may know that. So each is very aware that the other party to the transaction might act opportunistically to extract something from them - either or both parties can get very worried about "hold-ups". So how does one protect against hold-ups when efficiency in employment depends on being able to adapt flexibly as well as to have workers and employers invest specifically in one another - iein the joint enterprise - since this makes you even more exposed to hold-ups. The answer - ie the needed protections - lie in the phenomena of "reputations". These reputation systems rely on history, culture (internal and external), customs, traditions, and shared beliefs expectations. Kreps and Baron are masterful analysts of the conditions under which reputations can, can't, and might be relied upon to offer guarantees.
A long way from demand and supply , non? And much more interesting.
So in the res t of the book your are going to have some amazing new insights - and examples - about internal promotion ladders, recruitment , retention, incentives, performance evaluation, performance pay, job design, unions, etc...all based on this new transactions costs theory of behaviour, and all richly and amply illustrated by many fascinating examples. Enjoy

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book on strategic human resources I have ever read!
Baron & Kreps write with wit & grace, pulling together a vast amount of literature to make their point that human resource management is critical to a firm's success. In every chapter, they get to the pointquickly, writing for students in a way that faculty will appreciate.Theyretain the essence of the academic research on which their principles arebased, while focusing on what it all means for managers.I highlyrecommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A major achievement in an underserved field
Essential reading for both general managers and human resource executives, this book breaks new ground in several ways.

First, the authors present human resources as a critical part of a SYSTEM, integrated with thecompany's external environment, workforce, culture, strategy and productionmethods, rather than as an isolated or downstream activity.

Second, theybring insights from economics, sociology and social psychology to thetopic, in a powerful way.The four appendices alone (transaction costeconomics, game theory, agency theory and market signaling) are worth theprice of the book.

Third, they avoid the trap of "bestpractice", where an author looks at a few successful firms (GE? PepsiCo?3M?) and encourages others to imitate them.In contrast, thisbook offers clues to creating real and inimitable competitive advantagefrom a company's human resource management.

The entire treatment isreadable and rich in cases.

5-0 out of 5 stars No-bull human resources

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book You Should Read
As a roll in HR or some one just begin study HR, you should read this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Outlining a future for HR
Author Dave Ulrich reflects an awareness that many professionals keenly feel: in these highly competitive times, they must either evolve or stagnate. His book tells human resource (HR) leaders how to assume more vital, strategic roles within their organizations. He makes a convincing argument that successful companies must elevate HR to the role of a strategic partner, to enable it to implement programs that support an organization's goals. Whether reading any book can put you in the forefront of hands-on transformation remains to be seen, but this volume certainly offers plenty of real-world case studies to back up its premise that HR professionals must step into a new, vital strategic role. Each company and each HR department is so different, however, that it may be challenging to apply some of these broad themes to specific situations. That said, the themes themselves ring true, although the book is now more of a classic than the innovative think piece it was when new. We recommend it especially to HR professionals as a comprehensive look at why you must conquer so much territory to keep your organization competitive.
