Product Description
As nation states consolidated their power in the early modern period, Europe witnessed tragic economic dislocations, oppression, and wars leading to waves of terrorism and revolution that mirror our contemporary world situation in striking ways. Current perceptions of the dynamics of revolution, however, are largely determined by theoretical models that fail to account for the realities of the early modern peiod. This volume, the first comparative study of the three insurrections that erupted almost simultaneously during the War of the Spanish Succession, addresses that problem. Using their careful review of historical events as a focus, Linda Frey and Marsha Frey explore the nature and causes of revolution and examine the preconceptions and mythology surrounding that term. ... Product Description
Baroque castles and rococo villas dot Hungary’s countryside and stand as testaments to the wealth and power of this region’s aristocracy. Lord Pratt reveals the histories and treasures of these structures, many of which were inaccessible to the West until this past decade. Setting his discussion of the houses and their patrons against the backdrop of Hungary’s history, Pratt illuminates the manner in which diverse political and cultural influences have molded the architecture of this country’s most illustrious homes. For instance, he recounts how the castle Sárvár evolved from a wooden, fourteenth-century fortress to a splendid piece of Renaissance architecture under the noble Nádasdy’s family guidance. In a new, final chapter, Pratt laments the demise of the great home Fót while praising the skillful restoration of Seregélyes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars As thorough a documentation as possible
Professor Braham's dissection of the Hungarian phase of the Holocaust is masterful in scope and depth, even in the condensed version. The tragedy of Hungary's Jews is perhaps the most poignant of all, in that the community ran the emotional extremes from complacency to terror, euphoria to despair, in such a compressed time.

Also telling is the attitude of the non-Jewish majority. For every Nazi collaborator eagerly assisting the roundups, deportations, or worse, there was another Hungarian doing what s/he could to resist it, although few engaged in the kind of active resistance that could have stymied the Germans or rescued Jews or overthrown the Horthy regime. The Admiral himself is a fit symbol of the country's and its majority's moral legacy: while opposing the deportations once it became incontestible what the Germans really meant by "resettlement," his reactionary prejudices still encouraged and enabled Nazi plans until it was too late to stop them.

The author skirts the delicate issue of collaboration on the part of local, regional, and especially the national Jewish Councils. He hesitates to say so, but it is obvious that the aristocratic leadership of the Hungarian Jewish community felt little regard for the "common Jews" of the community, especially its "foreign element."Like true aristocrats they identified the community with their own persona and willingly sacrificed its "common members" to buy time, believing that by saving themselves they were thereby "saving Jewry."The opportunism is all the more uglier in its exploitation by Eichmann, giving the Council its crucial role in pacifying and deceiving the Hungarian Jewish community into cooperation up to boarding the very trains for Auschwitz.

One of the best local surveys of the Holocaust, and likely the best ever to be written on Hungary.

5-0 out of 5 stars Compensation for Hungarian Holocaust Survivors
This book has proven extraordinarily useful in documenting the experiences of Hungarian Holocaust survivors for the purposes of restitution claims.Hungarian Holocaust survivors are routinely caught in a restitution Catch-22: how long were you persecuted by the Hungarians versus how long were you persecuted by the Germans and who's responsible? Usually, these survivors fall between the historical cracks. Without books like this one, wherein extensive research has been done on this particular point of Holocaust history, not ALL of these survivors are falling through the cracks. On behalf of my clients, the survivors,I thank the author wholeheartedly for this extraordinary resource. ... Read more

Product Description

This comprehensive study traces the history of over forty royal free towns from the sixteenth century to 1848 in the territories of what today are Hungary, Slovakia, and Romania. Szelényi argues that these towns have been a neglected feature of national meta-narratives in Eastern Europe because their dwellers were often German speakers. He calls for a serious reevaluation of urban development in Eastern Europe and for a new meta-narrative that focuses on the region through the lenses of the numerous ethnic diasporas.

Hungary was the last ally of Nazi Germany, and as such suffered dreadful destruction in the course of the fighting during the last year of the war.Although the war discredited the political and social elite and gave opportunity for a new beginning. early optimism in democratic circles quickly dissipated. The communists, who had negligible indigenous support, with the help of the Soviet Army, in a short time managed to destroy any organized opposition to their taking power. Based on archival and other primary sources, this concise book describes the methods of communist conquest of power in one country in Eastern Europe to make the origin of the Cold War more understandable. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars On the Road from Fascism to Communism
I read this book both as a person who lived through the times described and as an academic observer of kindred subjects for the past five decades. The country discussed in this volume is Hungary, the years are 1944-48 during which the country was taken through its fate and fortunes from the fascist dictatorship of the Arrow Cross to full-blown communism under the sponsorship of theU.S.S.R. Though its focus is on one country, the message of the narrative far exceeds the narrow geographical and chronological boundaries of the subject. The text is illuminating not only as astudy of a small country, but also as history that sheds more light on the beginnings of the cold war and on Soviet strategies of establishing one-party governments in the eastern half of Europe.

For years academic discussions on this subject pivoted around two questions. One, did the USSR have an expansionist design for these countries early on, and two, would more circumspect or courageous attitude on the part of Hungarian politicians of the transitional period have prevented the eventual outcome of full-blown communism? Kenez's answers to these questions are straightforward: Soviet strategies were contingent on world political events, and two, once the decision was made, no amount of clever maneuvering could have prevented the imposition of communist government. The proof for conclusions unfolds through a book that cleverly blends analytic and chronological elements. While the Soviets are mulling over the implications of the advance of their armies deep into Central Europe, unforeseen developments in local and international politics shape their tactical and strategic decisions. Within this context, separate chapters discuss the rise of the communist controlled security police, a troubled project of building democracy, the Soviet domination of the International Control Commission, foci of local resistance with special emphasis on the Catholic Church, the dilemmas of a Jewish community facing another dictatorship after emerging from a regime of systematic destruction, and the first show trial that turned out to be a major instrument in liquidating the weak structures of the emerging democratic state.

Kenez's fusing these analytic and chronological elements produces a text that flows freely and elegantly. It is based on a careful synthesis of a rather large Hungarian monographic literature with the author's detective work in the archives. Kenez is a native of Hungary who, as a professional, has become a foremost historian of the Soviet Union ("from beginning to the end" as the subtitle of one of his many books brightly states). As a child he was eyewitness to many of the events described in this volume caught up in the destructive urges of two dictatorships and in the vagaries of the transition process. Given these facts, he is strikingly dispassionate in writing about the subject. Very much recommended. ... Read more

Product Description

How could a Jew kill a Jew for religious and political reasons? Many people asked this question after an Orthodox Jew assassinated Israeli Prime Minister Itshak Rabin in 1995. But historian Michael Stanislawski couldn't forget it, and he decided to find out everything he could about an obscure and much earlier event that was uncannily similar to Rabin's murder: the 1848 killing--by an Orthodox Jew--of the Reform rabbi of Lemberg (now L'viv, Ukraine). Eventually, Stanislawski concluded that this was the first murder of a Jewish leader by a Jew since antiquity, a prelude to twentieth-century assassinations of Jews by Jews, and a turning point in Jewish history. Based on records unavailable for decades, A Murder in Lemberg is the first book about this fascinating case.

On September 6, 1848, Abraham Ber Pilpel entered the kitchen of Rabbi Abraham Kohn and his family and poured arsenic in the soup that was being prepared for their dinner. Within hours, the rabbi and his infant daughter were dead. Was Kohn's murder part of a conservative Jewish backlash to Jewish reform and liberalization in a year of European revolution? Or was he killed simply because he threatened taxes that enriched Lemberg's Orthodox leaders?

Vividly recreating the dramatic story of the murder, the trial that followed, and the political and religious fallout of both, Stanislawski tries to answer these questions and others. In the process, he reveals the surprising diversity of Jewish life in mid-nineteenth-century eastern Europe. Far from being uniformly Orthodox, as is often assumed, there was a struggle between Orthodox and Reform Jews that was so intense that it might have led to murder.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ideas that need more work
There are at least three good books buried in this rather cursory little booklet, trying to get out, but not quite succeeding:

1)A thoughtfulanalysis of how and why the Reform Rabbi Abraham Kohn died in Lviv (then Lemberg) in 1848.Stanislawski does furnish details that he found in archives, and he advances the theory (not totally convincing)that the man charged but acquitted of the murder,Abraham Pilpel, was in fact the murderer. But these details do not add up to a coherent explanation of just how and why Pilpel, presumably together with Orthodox Jewish co-conspirators, would conceive and carry out a deed so alien to the methods traditionally used in internal Jewish disputes.

2)A religious history of the Jews of Lviv-Lemberg.Some elements of this history are of course familiar, in particular the disputes between Hasidim and the traditional Orthodox. But Rabbi Kohn was a Reform Jew, and the appearance of Reform Judaism so far east of Germany requires fuller and more careful explanation than given to us here.

3)The use of assassination in internal Jewish disputes, which Stanislawski says interests him so much, needs much more, and much more careful analysis. It appears that in addition to the (questionable) case of Rabbi Kohn, there were only two other cases that come easily to mind:that of Prime Minister Rabin in 1995, and that of the Labor Zionist leader Haim Arlosoroff in 1933, presumably at the hand of right-wing Zionists. Now if, as Staniswaski maintains, these cases are very rare, this rarity needs to be established, say through a careful comparative analysis of other groups similarly located. In Lemberg, that would involved the Poles, the Germans, and the Ruthenians. Is assassination more common in the internal affairs of these groups ? If not, perhaps the Jews are not as unique here as Stanislawski suggests. Moreover (and this goes back to book #1, above), if assassination is indeed generally considered unacceptable by all factions of Jews (except perhaps the clearly mentally imbalanced),Stanislawski has much explaining to do if he insists, as he does, that the murderers in the Rabbi Kohn case were organized by part of the local Jewish leadership.

In short, this is a stimulating outline for a number of books.Let's hope that the author will get to work on at least some of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book. Concise and beautifully written
This is a well thought out and concisely written book. The facts and comments are not padded with excessive or unnecessary information. It's a slim and to the point account of the background and consequences of the pioneering attempts to introduce Reform Judaism in the Eastern Europe of the 1800's.
The author accomplishes a beautiful act of compromise between the objectivity a historian ought to apply and the feelings, emotions and nostalgia that are inevitable given the nature of the subject.
I enjoyed this book a great deal. I suspect that any person interested in the subject of Reform Judaism or the works of a great historian would enjoy it as well.
