Extractions: Comments Skip to content Home Table of Contents Introduction ... Acknowledgements Popular Media Government agencies issue publications to inform the general public about common soil problems and to explain how the soil survey can help people to avoid or solve such problems. Some publications discuss soil problems broadly and are aimed at people who are not familiar with the information available in soil surveys. Other publications are directed toward certain groups, such as farmers, or homeowners. These publications explain specific soil-related problems and tell how to avoid or solve them. Indiana's pamphlet "Adaptability of Various Tillage-Planting Systems to Indiana Soils" is intended to help managers determine which tillage system and what combination of equipment are best for their particular soils, climate conditions, and farming operations ( Galloway et al., 1977

Soybean improvement through the incorporation of genetic resistance or tolerance is an accepted practice in soybean cultivar development for yield-limiting factors such as diseases (Athow, 1987) and nematodes (Riggs and Schmitt, 1987). A goal of plant breeders is to maintain the productivity of the parent line in the absence of the yield-limiting factor. Comparisons of near-isogenic lines with and without the tolerance or resistance genes are important to ascertain if

Management Area Program (MAP) PUBLIC land management assistance. History and Goals A project dedicated in 1985 in northern Wisconsin started MAP. This program provides technical and financial assistance to public land management agencies striving to create better grouse and woodcock habitat. Economic harvesting of timber is a major consideration of many public forest overseers. Because the benefit to grouse and woodcock is in small-block timber harvesting, and most timber harvesters prefer to harvest in large blocks, the Society assists public land managers in several ways. These include: providing funding to build timber harvest access roads through public forest lands, thereby reducing the costs and promoting small-block cutting; providing technical assistance via professionally trained personnel to help implement small-block cutting; helping to maintain timber access roads in readiness for future cutting by seeding to minimize erosion; and giving financial assistance to shearing alder brush to promote habitat suitable for ruffed grouse and woodcock. Projects There are currently over 400 projects in 28 states (in brown on the map below), encompassing more than 500,000 acres. Funding has exceeded $2,200,000 from 1985 through November 2001. Individual project details are available by contacting the PIC
