President's Letter To Alumni - Fall 2001 past few years, we have been working more closely with k12 schools in our AnotherLilly-funded program (the Earlham Lilly indiana Initiative, or ELII) has us http://www.earlham.edu/~pres/alumlets/alumlet-9-01.html
Extractions: Dear Friends: Earlham has always been a college characterized by excellent teaching. And we have also been a college that prepares excellent teachers. Of our alumni who are currently employed, we estimate that fully a quarter are working in education. Only a very few colleges or universities could say the same. Over the past few years, we have been working more closely with K-12 schools in our area. One program funded by a grant from Lilly Endowment (Raising Educational Achievement for College and Higher, or REACH) has allowed us to work with the five districts in Wayne County to improve reading skills for all students by the end of grade 3 and algebra skills by the end of grade 10. Another Lilly-funded program (the Earlham Lilly Indiana Initiative, or ELII) has us working with students and teachers in schools in six counties surrounding Earlham. The aim is to work with students who will be the first in their families to attend college, strengthening their preparation and lifting their aspirations. more Earlham School of Religion

Immigration In Indiana: K-12 Lessons out entirely. All that s eems necessary is to distribute them moreevenly among us and set up more schools that teach English. In http://www.indianahistory.org/programming/immigration/LESSONS/they.html
Extractions: Lesson Plan: They Aren't Like Us Rationale: This exercise helps students understand that xenophobic attitudes have existed throughout the history of our country -and every country; to identify stereotypic attitudes; to recognized that the cultural heritage of the United States has been enriched by each new wave of immigrants. Students will be able analyze and assess the meaning of a historic speech by a familiar and well-known person. Materials: Pencil, paper, "speech" included below. Timeframe: One hour (maximum) Method: As part of a larger conversation about immigration, it is important for students to be able to discuss and address issues of racism. Even though immigration is a fundamental characteristic of this country, it has been the source of constant debate and more often than not, discord. Immigration presents a dilemma for America's continuing search for identity. Biases have been expressed by every generation, especially when large numbers of immigrants have come to this country or during time of economic difficulty. Generally, these biases are directed toward the "other" - that is, anyone and everyone who is "not like us" - because they are of a different race, ethnicity or religion. It's a difficult, long-standing issue - and one that we need to talk about. How can we analyze anti-immigrant attitudes? How do we understand the origins of the fears and frustrations that cause animosity?
Wired News: California Schools Get Hooked California is not the first state to network all of its k12 schools. Classroomsin Alaska, Hawaii, indiana, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon http://www.wired.com/news/print/0,1294,45882,00.html
Extractions: Wired News Animations Wired Magazine HotBot (the Web) By Robin Clewley Story location: http://www.wired.com/news/school/0,1383,45882,00.html 02:00 AM Sep. 10, 2001 PT No one likes waiting for audio and video files to download. Certainly not school teachers, who can't afford to waste precious classroom time while students stare at a half-blank computer screen, waiting for a virtual museum tour to finish loading. But if all goes as planned, K-12 students in California may soon have access to an array of rich content previously unavailable to them due to the limitations of slow bandwidth. The Digital California Project provides $3.6 million a year for a broadband network to wire all of the state's 11,000 K-12 schools. Funded by the state of California, the project is scheduled to be completed by June 2002. The DCP will work in conjunction with programs being developed by The Corporation for Education Network Initiatives in California, a nonprofit organization that helps educational institutions acquire high-capacity Internet communications services.
