In addition to the main islands Java, Sumatra, Sulawesi, Kalimantan (South Borneo) and Irian Jaya, there are about 30 smaller archipelagos embracing altogether approx. 17,000 islands. Some 6,000 of these islands are inhabited. With a population of roughly 213 million (of whom approx. 90% are Moslems), Indonesia is also the fourth most populous country and at the same time the largest Islamic nation in the world. Economic growth was considerable in the 13 years up to mid-1997 and amounted to eight per cent in 1996. Indonesia too was hard hit by the financial and economic crisis in Southeast Asia. In 1998 Indonesia's GNP shrank by approx. 13%. This downward trend has now slowed down to a period of stagnation and it is currently assumed that in the medium term economic growth will regain its pre-crisis proportions.
