Smoke, haze, dust, odors and toxic compounds are present almost everywhere, especially in metropolitan cities like San Francisco. The quality of San Francisco's air depends on many factors. Practically every appliance runs directly or indirectly from fossil-fuel burning generators, which are one of the greatest sources of air pollutants in the Bay Area. IAQ generally refers to the quality of the air in an office environment. Other terms related to IAQ include Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) and "Sick Building Syndrome." Complaints about IAQ range from simple complaints such as the air smelling odd to more complex, where the air quality causes illness and lost work time. It may not be easy to identify a single reason for IAQ complaints because of the number and variety of possible sources, causes, and varying individual sensitivities. Related Safety and Health Topics Recognition IAQ problems can be caused by ventilation system deficiencies, overcrowding, tobacco smoke, microbiological contamination, outside air pollutants, and off gassing from materials in the office and mechanical equipment. Occupants of indoor environments may be exposed to a variety of pollutants originating from human activities or presence in the home, combustion for heating and cooking, consumer products, furnishings, building materials and outdoor air. Because of the potentially adverse effects to human health resulting from exposure to pollutants in the home, the " Exposure Guidelines for Residential Indoor Air Quality " were developed. Exposure limits were prepared for the following compounds or groups of compounds: aldehydes, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, particulate matter, sulphur dioxide, water vapour and radon. In addition, the guidelines suggest recommendations for controlling exposure to some contaminants for which the formulation of acceptable exposure ranges was deemed inappropriate or was not feasible. This group includes: biological agents, chlorinated hydrocarbons, fibrous materials, lead, pest control products, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, product aerosols, and tobacco smoke.

A lot of the water vapour in your home comes from normal human activities. You need fresh air to get rid of this extra humidity.

John Conyers (D-Mich.) hinted toward a formally organized lobby on Capitol Hill in support of the Melina Bill. This is now being penciled in to take place in April. For now, though, the big news surrounding the bill involves some changes made prior to its introduction in the new congressional session. The revised United States Toxic Mold Safety and Protection act will involve the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers.
