Season tickets for the seven home games of the 2003 Iowa football team will cost $246 per season ticket for the general public, $204 per season ticket for UI faculty and staff, and $105 per season ticket for UI students. The price for comparable season tickets in 2002 was $196, $160 and $84, respectively.

Block scheduling in schools may impact student achievement/ACT scores AMES, Iowa Student achievement may be impaired by certain models of block scheduling, according to a new series of studies by Iowa State University and ACT. Block scheduling models typically divide the school day into 80-90 minute blocks of time. The two main models are 4x4-semester plans (four classes per semester) and eight-block alternating-day approaches (eight classes throughout the year, with four classes on one day and four other classes on the next day). In contrast, under the more common seven- or eight-period daily scheduling models, students typically attend seven or eight 45-50 minute classes each day. Block scheduling is used by about 30 percent of high schools in Iowa and Illinois, according to a series of joint studies conducted by a research team of Donald Hackmann, associate professor of educational leadership and policy studies at Iowa State, and Matt Harmston, Ann-Maureen Pliska and Robert Ziomek from ACT Inc. ACT is an Iowa City-based educational services firm that administers the ACT Assessment. Leonard later received a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Graceland College, where he met his future wife Dody. These experiences led to dedication to quality education that continues today as he diligently works to see to it that the quality of Iowa schools, teachers, and students improve upon their nationally recognized high level of achievement. Leonard supported increasing Pell Grants to the level they are today, more than double the level they were when he was first elected to Congress, providing low income students with the means they need to continue their education and strive for a better future. In 1956, Leonard was drafted into the United States Army as a private. He would spend twenty years serving his country in the Army, eventually rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. While in the military, Leonard continued his education. He first graduated with honors from the Artillery Officers Candidate School. Later, he graduated first in his class from both the Army Aviation Fixed Wing Flight School and then at the Army Aviation Helicopter Flight School. He also graduated from the Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and later returned there as an educator, imparting his knowledge onto another generation of brave soldiers.

Extractions: The two-inch diameter seal pictures a citizen soldier standing in a wheat field, surrounded by farming and industrial tools, with the Mississippi River in the background. An eagle is overhead, holding in its beak a scroll bearing the state motto, "Our liberties we prize, and our rights we will maintain." The motto was the work of a three-man Senate committee and was incorporated into the design of the seal at their suggestion. Iowa was almost 75 years old before the state banner was adopted by the Legislature. Creation of a state banner had been suggested for years by patriotic organizations, but no action was taken until World War I, when Iowa National Guardsmen stationed along the Mexican border suggested a state banner was needed. The Guardsmen said regiments from other states had banners and they felt one was needed to designate their unit. This prompted the state's Daughters of the American Revolution to design a banner in 1917. The Legislature officially adopted the design in 1921. Iowans, with the memory of the Civil War still fresh in their minds, had not adopted a state banner because they felt a national banner was the only one needed. Approval of the banner was aided by patriotic organizations that launched a campaign to explain that a state banner was not meant to take the place of the national emblem.
