Extractions: Return to the Eugenics Home Page The Rising Curve: Long-Term Gains in IQ and Related Measures , published by the American Psychological Association, 1998 with 23 contributors. The Rising Curve covers three main topics in intelligence: Is there a world-wide trend in intelligence that is rising, is the gap between Blacks and Whites narrowing, and is there a dysgenic trend in genotypical intelligence? The Flynn Effect: Rising IQs around the world The observed increase in average IQ scores of 3 points per decade has been reported by many as proof that intelligence is not stable but is flexible with regards to environmental influences. However, none of the authors in this extensive review of the data, believes that intelligence is increasing at a rate greater than can be attributed by eugenic means (breeding smarter people). Instead, they are looking at the mechanisms of tests and how they are administered and interpreted in different time periods as people become exposed to differing environments. That is, as the humans change their environment they change the context in which their intelligence comes into play, and the testing methods must take this change into account. Obviously they have not because the generational change in IQ results has increased, without any evidence that today's children are any smarter than their great-grand-parents. So it is back to the drawing boards for the psychometricians who design the tests. do matter for the development of intelligence have not yet been identified."

Discovery Of Site In Brain Linked To I.Q. I never learned the results of the iq tests I took as a school kid. My parentschose not to tell me. Return to the Txtwriter Inc. home Page. http://www.txtwriter.com/Onscience/Articles/brainIQ.html
Extractions: View articles by date ON SCIENCE Home Page View articles by topic One surprisingly small region of the brain is responsible for general intelligence. Smart means different things to different people. To a scientist it usually means being able to solve hard problems. Measuring this kind of problem-solving intelligence is not difficult. Quite the contrary. In fact, whatever test of intelligence you administer, wether focused on verbal or spatial thinking, the same people tend to do well. This led Psychologist Charles Spearman to propose way back in 1904 that there must be some general factor of intelligence that the tests were measuring. He called it g , and argued that it contributed to success on a wide range of cognitive tasks. g is what I.Q. largely measures (it measures other more specific abilities as well). Most psychologists did not agree with Spearman, favoring instead the idea that high-level thinking involves many factors. The idea was that analytical thinking requires a large set of separate information handling abilities from different parts of the brain, some spatial, some verbal, many involved with the speed with which particular groups of nerve cells can process information. Dr. John Duncan of the Medical Research Council in Cambridge, England and colleagues reported in the journal SCIENCE this week that Spearman had it right all along.

Extractions: a response to common criticisms "The IQ has so far been a dismal failure in determining a person's intelligence. It is still used, much to our embarassment, bouyed by a blind faith in the system that has already failed." (From a post to the Oz-Gifted Mailing List) "There is now a lot of respectable work to say that the IQ-merchants were hopeless naive and simplistic in their constructions of human capacities." ( Ashenden, 1983 "So from a statistical piont of view an IQ test isn't a very good measuring instrument, with a limited sample, and a lot of error for any type of group comparision." (From a post to the Oz-Gifted Mailing List) At times you get the feeling that the tests are so hopelessly flawed that it's astonishing that anyone still uses them. For instance, Kennedy (1990) wrote: "They could have read Stephen J. Gould's The Mismeasure of Man , and gained an excellent appraisal of the conceptual and ideological rubbish peddalled by would-be intelligence measurers." (See my review of The Mismeasure of Man for a response to this.)
IQ Tests - Education Channel - Liberal Arts & Crafts Network home Channels Education Schools Testing iq tests. in use at most schoolsin the US today One of the most popular tests administered in schools http://www.liberalartsandcrafts.net/contentcatalog/learning/IQtests.shtml
Extractions: One of the most popular tests administered in schools, the Stanford-Binet test was first developed in France by Alfred Binet and Theodore Simon (Binet-Simon test) in 1906. Binet and Simon set-out to develop a standardized tool for identifying children with mental handicaps in response to a request by a French school official. The test evolved in response to new findings and contributions from numerous other colleagues. It was translated into English and brought to the United States by a professor at Stanford University. The Stanford-Binet test is individually administered in a kit form that includes a test manual, recording booklet, standard toy objects (for young children), printed cards (for older subjects), and a picture of a unisex multicultural doll. Verbal tasks are emphasized, but the most recent version also includes performance tests that do not require verbal skills. If administered and evaluated by a trained psychologist, this testing instrument provides valuable information about a subject's school-related aptitudes and abilities.

Cultural Bias In IQ Testing - Liberal Arts & Crafts Network home Channels Education Schools Testing Cultural Bias. Cultural Biasin iq Testing By Lorraine D But, no intelligence tests in popular use today http://www.liberalartsandcrafts.net/contentcatalog/social/bias.shtml
Extractions: As was discussed in the article on intelligence tests, some test designers have been able to minimize cultural bias in the test instruments. But, no intelligence tests in popular use today provide completely unbiased assessments of individual intelligence or a child's likelihood for school success. Unfortunately, most placement tests and intelligence tests are biased toward a predominantly white, middle-class population. True, the American culture should be one culture if we are to be one nation; however, a five year old*** citizen born of immigrant parents who do not speak English should be entitled to learn and excel along with other five year old citizens. If a biased intelligence test places such a child into a remedial class, this child may not succeed. History and science have proven that no group of people is intellectually superior to any other ethnic or racial group. The cultural bias that most often hampers school success today for some US children is not race, but economics.

What will a medical degree mean to you or you family? "Lastly, I would like to acknowledge the assistance of my colleagues and our industrial partners at Siemens and Radionics who were instrumental in the completion of this research project, " I said concluding my presentation at the annual fall meeting of the Biomedical Engineering Society last month in October. Although I felt nervous before my first oral presentation at a professional conference, afterwards I felt an overwhelming sense of joy and accomplishment. All the hard work and late nights in the lab had finally paid off. In my research, I am involved with the interventional MRI project at [major hospital] where MR images are used to guide and monitor minimally invasive therapies such as localized biopsy and thermal ablation of cancerous tumors. My research topic is on the spatial calibration procedure and the interactive scan plane localization for device tracking in a low-field open MR imager. In the course of my research, I developed a unique and accurate method of defining spatial coordinates inside the imaging volume of the open MR imager, which led to the publication and presentation of two separate abstracts at two different professional conferences in Sydney, Australia and Cleveland, Ohio.

Moreover, the military also gave me the opportunity to travel abroad. Living in countries such as Korea, Spain, and Germany and immersing myself in their cultures has given me perspective on the differences between the United States and other countries. Each place I have lived has been unique in some way, from the different languages to the variations in cultural practices. Dealing with individuals with different backgrounds has helped me develop a good rapport with people. From my travels, I also learned that there can be more than one solution to a problem. Indeed, having a variety of perspectives makes it easier to come up with approaches to different problems. My travel experience has strengthened my interpersonal skills, as well as my integrity and determination. Perhaps most importantly, my military training provided me with the courage, strength and dedication to succeed even after I left military service. I believed that I could accomplish anything, as long as I put my mind to it. This belief led me to pursue a career in the manufacturing industry, where I worked for several manufacturing companies, and eventually convinced me I could succeed in an academic environment. In each of my jobs, I benefited from my hard work ethic by advancing to senior technician levels and eventually securing leadership positions within my department. For six years I enjoyed a variety of challenges and opportunities, whether it was troubleshooting computer equipment, collaborating with electronics engineers, or operating industrial machinery.
