Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Prime Minister of Iceland (Icelandic: Forsætisráðherra Íslands) is Iceland's head of government. The prime minister is appointed formally by the President and exercises executive authority along with the cabinet subject to parliamentary support. Politics of Iceland takes place in a framework of a parliamentary representative democratic republic, whereby the Prime Minister of Iceland is the head of government, and of a multi-party system. It is arguably the world's oldest parliamentary democracy. Executive power is exercised by the government. Legislative power is vested in both the government and parliament, the Althing. The Judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature. In losing four seats in the April 1995 parliamentary elections, the IP and SDP (so called Viðey government) mustered a simple majority in the 63-seat Althing. However, Prime Minister and IP leader Davíð Oddsson chose the resurgent Progressive Party (PP) as a more conservative partner to form a stronger and more stable majority with 40 seats. ... Excerpt: About 81 per cent of total primary energy supply in Iceland is derived from domestically-produced renewable energy sources. In 2007, geothermal energy provided about 66 per cent of primary energy, the share of hydro power was 15 per cent, and fossil fuels (mainly oil) 19 per cent. The main use of geothermal energy is for space heating with the heat being distributed to buildings through extensive district-heating systems. About 85% of all houses in Iceland are heated with geothermal energy. Renewable energy provides 100 per cent of electricity production, with about 70 percent coming from hydropower and 30 percent from geothermal power. Most of the hydropower plants are owned by Landsvirkjun (the National Power Company) which is the main supplier of electricity in Iceland. The nation is ranked 53rd in the list of countries by carbon dioxide emissions per capita (2003), emitting 62% less than the United States per capita despite using more primary energy per capita. The Strokkur geyser. Lying on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Iceland is one of the most geologically active areas on Earth.Iceland's unique geology allows it to produce renewable energy. Product Description
It became increasingly clear during word War II that the AxisPowers (Germany, Italy, and Japan) were aiming at world domination. The Nazis hadoccupied a swathe of Europe from Norway and Denmark to Greece, the Italians had invadedEthiopia (Formerly known as Abyssinia), and the Japanese had attacked the USA Fleet inPearl Harbor, an event that brought America into the war.

Theinvasion of Norway by he Germans in 1940 exposed the shipping in the North Atlantic toeven greater dangers from U-Boats. Iceland held a key position in these waters, and, ifoccupied by the Germans, would have provided bases from which German warships could havedominated the North Atlantic. It was known that Germany had been wooing Iceland forseveral years. Iceland, therefore, had to be denied to the Germans. The country hadneither army, navy, nor air force and was, by constitution, pledged to neutrality. ItsParliament, the Althing, confident that its neutrality would be respected, rejected theBritish Government’s offer of protection. The British, however, believed thatthis was too great a risk to contemplate, and the Government therefore ordered theinvasion and occupation of Iceland. It is worth recording that the British troops, whocame as enemies, left as friends.

The author, a sergeant in theIntelligence Corps, spent a year as part of the occupying force. The book describes hisexperience and includes extracts from the Icelandic press relating to the Britishtroops. ... Read more
