Product Description

This readable, friendly guide is intended for bird watchers and non–bird watchers alike—for anyone who wants to enjoy nature right in his or her own backyard.

The longtime editor of Bird Watchers Digest and author of numerous books on birds, Bill Thompson III  has been feeding and watching birds for forty years. He has tried everything, and here he shares what he’s learned so that readers can avoid mistakes and skip right to successful bird feeding. He also debunks common myths about bird feeding: Does feeding birds stop them from migrating? Will birds starve if you leave your feeders empty after the birds have come to rely on them?

In an easygoing and lighthearted style, seven chapters cover all the elements needed to attract birds to a backyard (food, water, shelter) and address special cases and problems (keeping bees out of the hummingbird feeder, preventing birds from flying into windows, and much more). The final chapter profiles the 130 species that are most common at backyard feeders. No separate field guide is needed; it’s all right here—everything a beginner needs to know to attract birds and then figure out what kind they are.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great introduction to the pastime
This charmingly written and handsomely illustrated book purports to be for the "backyard birder"-but I doubt very much that any reader will be a "backyard birder" once she's done. Bill Thompson does a great job here of communicating many of the basic facts about attracting and identifying the birds of suburb and farm, but even better, he reveals to the uninitiated the excitement and enjoyment to be had from going further, learning more, doing more with birds. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Bird Feeder Book
Not a bad book, full of great photos and some nice ideals on what to prepare your feather friends. A simple to understand book.

5-0 out of 5 stars One Of The Best
I own dozens of books about bird feeding and identification.Of them all, I found the Stokes book to be one of the best written, and most informative of them all.The Stokes family has been at the bird business for a very long time and takes a rather folksy attitude toward the facts about bird feeding. Its entertaining without being technical or boring. For the price they are asking new with free shipping, this is a book for the backyard novice, as well as experienced birder I would recommend..

4-0 out of 5 stars Bird Book
Good book, has a lot of useful information and tips on how to attact birds to your home feeders.Could be a bit more expansive, but pictures are great.All-in-all a helpful book.Won't know until spring whether the tips to attract the birds works or not.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Book, Slightly Misleading Title
This book is subtitled "The complete guide to attracting, identifying, and understanding your feeder birds."While it is good at the "indentifying" and "understanding" parts, it leaves something to be desired in the "attracting" department.I had hoped for a book that would tell me what has a good chance of drawing specific birds, but except for hummingbirds, it really doesn't go into detail about the topic. It's still a good book as far as it goes; I simply don't think that it's much of a guide to attracting the specific birds you have reason to believe are in your area, but goes with a considerably more general approach.

Product Description

A stunning full-color guide to one of America's most popular hobbies, with a region-by-region approach that unlocks the key to quick and easy bird identification.

Some 63 million Americans report that they enjoy observing their avian friends from their homes, and newcomers join the backyard bird-watching ranks all the time. But how do backyard birders learn who's who when typical field guides bombard them with choices that take forever to sort out?

The Backyard Bird Lover's Field Guide keeps it simple with a regional approach that cuts the possibilities down to size. Instead of poring over hundreds of species that don't come anywhere near our own backyard, readers will find about 30 of the most likely prospects for each of seven regions of the country. Each entry is packed with advice on favorite foods, welcoming plants, and other temptations to lure birds to the backyard, along with glimpses into the birds' personalities.

Sally Roth has a gift for conveying her passion for the subject along with her extensive knowledge. "Roth's love for birds and her hands-on practical experience are inspiring," say Sharon Dunn and Michael Dunn, owners of the Duncraft Birdfeeding Catalog, about Roth's Backyard Bird Feeder's Bible. Filled with you-can-do-it features, such as tricks to help birders identify birds in a flash and ways to avoid confusing two similar birds, this new field guide will receive similar praise.

5-0 out of 5 stars Name that bird
We love this book. It has helped us identify dozens of the birds visiting the feeders on our patio.

5-0 out of 5 stars had the bird we were looking for
I got this for my 85 year old mother. We had put in bird feeder for her enjoyment, and she wanted to ID her new friends. She loves the birds...and the book which helps her mame them.

5-0 out of 5 stars making friends with the birds...
"When you identify birds by name, they feel like friends."

That is Sally Roth's assertion noted on the back of her very pleasant book, The Backyard Bird Lover's Field Guide. If you are accustomed to the usual suspects utilized for bird identification, such as the Peterson's guide or Sibley's, Roth's work will give you a refreshing, simple alternative. And if you're a novice birder, it's just what you need.

Roth begins by describing a bit of bird-watching history along with personal reasons on how and why one should pursue such an activity. She writes with a casual, light-hearted style that makes it seem like you're reading notes from a familiar acquaintance. The large number of vivid photographs adds additional life to her homespun tales.

The author gets to heart of solving the avian identification riddle by describing specific geographic regions around the United States detailed with native birds in mind. The information is especially handy for those who enjoy traveling or are just curious about common bird populations around the country.

The book provides easy directions for identifying a variety of well-known species. What are your "First Impressions" of the bird in question?"Details, details," and "Listen up!" are just a few of the categories one should consider.Roth even tells us what seeds they will eat from birdfeeders and the types of vegetation they prefer. Each page is capped off with a short recollection or insight of the featured bird.

The focus and style of Sally Roth's field guide make this a valued addition to any bird lovers collection. It may be slanted to newcomers, but it's a great way for anyone to become friends with the birds.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good only for backyard birds, cover missleading.
Even though there is a pelican on the cover, there are no pelicans, egrets, cranes or other swamp birds that you would expect to find in a book called All About Louisisana Birds. The book was very informative on birds you would might see in your backyard expecially if you put out feed.It also had helpful advice on types of food, housing, what to plant, ect. However, this book could have been called All About Birds in Southeastern Backyards and been a more acurate title. 4-0 out of 5 stars Inexpensive addition to your animal track library
Now here is a bargain of an animal track book:

1.It has dichotomous keys for identifying tracks for mammals and birds. The species list goes into quite a bit of detail beyond "type" or genus.

2.The drawings of tracks and gaits are large and clear.

3.The book is relatively light, and small enough to fit in a small pack or large pocket (7.9" x 5.4" x 0.4").Paperback.

4.It is inexpensive!

5.It includes notes on reptiles and amphibians.

Product Description

In this book, bursting with more information than any field guide could hold, the well-known author and birder Pete Dunne introduces readers to the "Cape May School of Birding." It's an approach to identification that gives equal or more weight to a bird's structure and shape and the observer's overall impression (often called GISS, for General Impression of Size and Shape) than to specific field marks.

After determining the most likely possibilities by considering such factors as habitat and season, the birder uses characteristics such as size, shape, color, behavior, flight pattern, and vocalizations to identify a bird. The book provides an arsenal of additional hints and helpful clues to guide a birder when, even after a review of a field guide, the identification still hangs in the balance.

This supplement to field guides shares the knowledge and skills that expert birders bring to identification challenges. Birding should be an enjoyable pursuit for beginners and experts alike, and Pete Dunne combines a unique playfulness with the work of identification. Readers will delight in his nicknames for birds, from the Grinning Loon and Clearly the Bathtub Duck to Bronx Petrel and Chicken Garnished with a Slice of Mango and a Dollop of Raspberry Sherbet.

When I bought this book, I thought it was an identification key.It is notnor does it need to be.Especially inthe field where markings are difficult to see.I really enjoyed his emphasis on habitat and "vocalizations".Very thorough. It's not an exciting read but it sure is informative.Experienced birders could supplement their knowledge with this different approach.Novices would certainly benefit by having a fresh start with birding techniques.Using the "Cape May" approach might make a birder out of anybody.
