4-0 out of 5 stars Ya gotta love these jewels of nature!!
This is a great book. Easy to read; a light coffee table book. It has all the types of hummers and where they live, migrate, their habitat in a simple format with nice photos, diving diagrams. Great resource to learn about the birds for your area.

4-0 out of 5 stars Learn about Hummingbirds
So many things to wonder about when watching these tiny little birds. They drive away the crows and eagles while protecting their nests. We have one loyal "guard bird" each year who protects his yard.I have had so many questions about where they go and how they live which are all answered in this book - wonderful photos too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hints on Hummers
This was the third book on hummingbirds that I bought. It is a good one to have. This book seems more down to regular human knowledge and not as much scientific jargon. This is my grandchildren's favorite. There is a lot of info on types and favorite feeders for the hummers. This was interesting.A great all around book.

I wished it was a little smaller in dimension, for easier use out of doors, but we have thoroughly enjoyed the contents.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful resource book
beautiful pictures and great information for new and old hummingbird watchers. This book was included with various hummingbird feeders as a gift for my brother.I wanted him to enjoy watching the hummingbirds in his yard.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great pictures

I enjoyed this book alot as you can see by me rating. It has alot of colorfull pictures, but could have more.It provides good information and it is to the point but they could have gone further to explain it better. They could have provided more information on specific feeders, and picturesand brand names to go along with their descriptions. All together Ithought this was a great book. I would encourage any one who is interestedin orioles or birds in general to read it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good parrot guide for the ametuer
I found this book to be a good guide for beginners and ametuers. Although it does not have all of the parrot species. It only has around 70. For people who have further interest in parrots should pick up Parrots of the World by Joseph M. Forshaw. ... Read more

Description:
Most early studies of consciousness have focused on human subjects. This is understandable, given that humans are capable of reporting accurately the events they experience through language or by way of other kinds of voluntary response. As researchers turn their attention to other animals, ''accurate report'' methodologies become increasingly difficult to apply. Alternative strategies for amassing evidence for consciousness in non-human species include searching for evolutionary homologies in anatomical substrates and measurement of physiological correlates of conscious states. In addition, creative means must be developed for eliciting behaviors consistent with consciousness. In this paper, we explore whether necessary conditions for consciousness can be established for species as disparate as birds and cephalopods. We conclude that a strong case can be made for avian species and that the case for cephalopods remains open. Nonetheless, a consistent effort should yield new means for interpreting animal behavior. ... Read more

Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A650293. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The Taiwan Strait remains a possible flashpoint and is potentially one of the most destabilizing issues in the Asia-Pacific region. Even though People's Republic of China (PRC), Taiwanese, and U.S. officials have put forward various policy positions on this issue, the question of Taiwan's future remains unresolved. Finding common ground between all parties involved in the dispute requires each side to see stability and constructive dialogue as the means to a peaceful end. This peaceful solution will only come about after a long-term process of linking the two cross-strait communities by way of exchanges of goodwill and cooperation. As the people of the PRC and Taiwan work on reconciling their differences, the United States must play a supportive, balanced role. By maintaining a posture of strategic ambiguity and a cross- strait policy built on the three communique's and the Taiwan Relations Act (TRA) , the United States can reduce the likelihood of future conflict while encouraging each side to develop peaceful mechanisms to resolve differences. This thesis examines the Taiwan question from the perspective of conflict resolution to develop ideas and options for policymakers that promote stability and encourage constructive cross-strait dialogue. ... Description:
Foresters are under increasing national and global pressure to demonstrate that forestry activities are ecologically sustainable. One aspect of this is maintenance of current biodiversity on forest management areas. This is problematic where rare species are concerned, due to a paucity of information on which to base management decisions, and potential difficulties in monitoring such species. Generally, species with narrow geographic distribution and high habitat specificity are rare and are most at risk due to habitat change. We present a method of identifying rare species found in commercial habitat types that may be at risk due to forestry activities. We also introduce the concept of temporal rarity into a systematic classification system. We then apply this system to data on songbirds from the boreal mixedwood ecoregion in Alberta, Canada. We identified an initial list of 33 species that were rare based on a rank abundance plot. We then removed species from the list whose geographic ranges within the ecoregion were peripheral and that were more abundant in non-commercial habitat types. We added species that were abundant in our year of sampling but were rare in most other years and flagged species that were irruptive or hard to detect. Finally, we evaluated the conservation priority of the remaining 18 species using three criteria: (1) those that were specialists on habitats that will be reduced or altered by forestry, (2) those already listed as sensitive, and (3) those with restricted continental ranges that overlapped substantially with the focal ecoregion. ... Description:
I examined how winter flooding of post-harvest rice fields-a management practice used to benefit waterbirds-affects field use by other birds. In addition to waterbirds previously studied, I recorded 56 bird species in rice fields. Of these, five were more abundant in flooded fields, ten were more abundant in unflooded fields, no difference was detected for 19, and the remainder were too rare to draw any conclusions. Species that were more common in unflooded fields were all carnivorous or granivorous in winter, whereas species that were more common in flooded fields were mostly insectivores commonly associated with aquatic habitats. The net effects of the responses by individual species were fewer raptor species in flooded fields, but no difference in the species richness of other landbirds. Winter flooding potentially has negative effects for some birds, but has no discernible effects on most species studied and may benefit some passerines. ... Read more
