Product Description

While Impressionism marked the first steps toward modern painting by revolutionising an artistic medium stifled by academic conventions, Post-Impressionism, even more revolutionary, completely liberated colour and opened it to new, unknown horizons. Anchored in his epoch, relying on the new chromatic studies of Michel Eugène Chevreul, Georges Seurat transcribed the chemist’s theory of colours into tiny points that created an entire image. With his heavy strokes,Van Gogh illustrated the midday sun, while Cézanne renounced perspective. Rich in its variety and in the singularity of its artists, Post-Impressionism was a passage taken by all the well-known figures of 20th century painting, and which is here presented, for the great pleasure of the reader, by Nathalia Brodskaïa.

3-0 out of 5 stars A bit talkative, but well illustated introduction
This is a solid introduction to the modern painting that tells a little bit about everything and is well illustrated by very good photos 50/50 in proportion to the text. The amount of text is greater than in popular histories of painting making it a bit talkative or - in other words - analytic. The analysis and publishing are good and may satisfy someone willing to explore, but maybe a bit too much for a casual reader. It does not seem to have much of competition in its class of references a notch above popular.

5-0 out of 5 stars Modern Art!
I just purchased this book, it looks wonderful. It has the quality of a textbook, but it does not read like a textbook. that is to say it does not drone on and on, it reads well for those who have an interest in modern art. I cover all the periods of modern art and gives concise background to the artists and events of the perod in which the mode of art occurred.
I highly reccomend this book. ... Read more

Product Description
Almost twenty years after the creation of the Musee d’Orsay, the 19th century seems more than ever to be the “Golden Age” of French art. It boasts names such as Ingres and Delacroix, Manet and Puvis de Chavannes, Gustave Eiffel and Charles Garnier. French art became a universally accepted benchmark, spreading the discoveries of Impressionism, the Haussmann models, and the daring of art nouveau far beyond its borders, and receiving in return, in the form of the countless artists who flocked to its hub, numerous influences from abroad. Other key movements associated with the19th century include Romanticism; Neo-Classicism, “orientalism,” and japonisme; Realism; the Barbizon School and plein-air painting; Neo-Impression, Cloissonism, and the Nabis; and Symbolism. This complete, chronological history is illustrated by more than 400 illustrations and covers painting, sculpture, and architecture, as well as the advent of photography, its impact on painting, and its emergence as an art form of its own. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars 148 illustrations, 24 in color, broad analysis
This book - with a broad analysis and 148 illustrations, but only 24 in color - is inferior to ISBN: 0714826626 (titled The Post-Impressionists by Belinda Thomson), ISBN: 0297777130, ISBN: 0064304000, or even ISBN: 9990705968.
SYNOPSIS (from the publisher):
What happened after Impressionism? What did it lead to? From Seurat's Pointillism in the 1880s to the expressive use of color by the Fauves in the early 1900s, the Post-Impressionist artists - Cezanne, Gauguin, Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec, Matisse, Munch and more - were constantly experimenting with new forms, techniques and subject matter in a varied and ambivalent reaction to Impressionism. With liberal quotations from artists, writers and critics, Bernard Denvir brings Post-Impressionism to life: the different artistic groupings, the effects of contemporary writing, music and politics, the influence of Japanese art and "primitive" sculpture, and the spread of artistic practice into printmaking.

4-0 out of 5 stars A serviceable survey of an era that is difficult to sum up
As Bernard Denvir points out in this excellent survey, there really isn't Post-Impressionism as such.Denvir explains that only in the English-speaking world does the expression even exist.Indeed, there clearly is no defined school or movement to which the term Post-Impressionism refers.Instead, it vaguely points at all the painters and artists--whether individuals or schools--that reacted to the work of the Impressionists.

As Denvir points out, there are two broad ways in which the so-called Post-Impressionists could and did react to the Impressionists. One of these ways is varying with the Impressionists in Form, such as much of the work of painters like Seurat and his followers, Cézanne, Gaugin, and Van Gogh. This part of the book is by far the most familiar to the casual art student or museumgoer. But Denvir also covers those various painters who differed over issues surrounding Content.Denvir shows how many, many painters were off put by the lack of historical or symbolic content to be found in the work of the Impressionists.

In the end, the reader will primarily gain an impression of how enormously diverse and changing the art world was in the wake of Impressionism. We tend to prefer our histories to be nice and neat and unmessy, but these were messy times, and Denvir does an excellent job of reflecting that disorder. The book ends with a helpful listing of many of the key figures from the period.Overall, I would not say this is one of the very best book in the World of Art series, but it is nonetheless a very helpful one.

5-0 out of 5 stars They rock our art
English critics Roger Fry and Desmond Mac Carthy came up with the word post-Impressionist to describe paintings by French modern artists for a showing at the Grafton Galleries in 1910. The term took in what came after Georges Seurat's "Une baignade a Asnieres," with its unspontaneous need for many preliminary studies, and "La grande jatte," with all its tiny round dots, ended the dominating outdoors, small-brushstroked, spontaneous style of Impressionism. Post-Impressionism took shape with Paul Cezanne's emotional art leaving out realities of atmosphere, light and shade in "The large bather" and "Still life with onions and a bottle"; Pierre Cecile Puvis de Chavannes's keeping going the Classical tradition of appeal to noble emotions, harmony in composition, and stability with subdued colors in "The sacred grove"; Odilon Redon's Hieronymus Bosch- and Pieter Bruegel-like irrationally unreal imagery leading into Surrealism, as in his "Origins" album, with a central eye in his flower drawing; Douanier Rousseau's primitive art, with his tigers Cezanne- and Claude Monet-like in their horizonless and skyless clearings, Paul Gauguin-like in their nostalgia for a lost paradise, proto-Pablo Picasso in their enchantingly mixed fantasy with reality, and Georges Seurat-like in their large-scale stillness; and Vincent Van Gogh's "Night cafe" becoming the most persuasive example of the Romantic abstract, unrealistic use of color. Post-Impressionism spread with the forming of artist-friendly galleries and organizations for showing works, such as the Societe des artistes independants; the avant-garde Les vingt, with such Pointillism practicing members as James Ensor and Alfred William Finch; Societe nationale des beaux-arts, for such decorative artists as Carolus-Duran and John Singer Sargent; and the Salon d'automne, with its striking showing of Henri Matisse's "Woman with a hat," proto-Fauvist in Cezanne-type solidity and violent colors. Post-Impressionism also spread with Japanese print- and Henri Toulouse-Lautrec poster-influenced compositions, proto-abstract art in their flat colored structure, such as the albums, book illustrations, posters, prints and theatre programs by Pierre Bonnard and Edouard Vuillard; with commercially successful printmaking, such as Felix Bracquemond's Societe des peintres-graveur album of individual artist prints and yearly exhibitions, Theatre d'art and Theatre de l'oeuvre founding actor manager Aurelien Lugne-Poe's commissioned posters, programs and stage designs from the Nabis, and Lucien Pissarro's Eragny Press booklets illustrated with colored engravings; and with close links to twentieth-century events and ideologies, such as Pablo Picasso's Spanish Civil War-based "Guernica." Author Bernard Denvir's appropriately illustrated and well-organized book reads particularly well with Florence E Coman's TREASURES OF IMPRESSIONISM AND POST-IMPRESSIONISM, Fogg Art Museum's IMPRESSIONIST AND POST-IMPRESSIONIST PAINTINGS, Sarah Halliwell's IMPRESSIONISM AND POSTIMPRESSIONISM, Thomas Parsons et al's POST-IMPRESSIONISM, Belinda Thomson's POST-IMPRESSIONISM, 24 FULL-COLOR POSTCARDS OF GREAT IMPRESSIONIST AND POST-IMPRESSIONIST PAINTINGS, and James N Wood's IMPRESSIONISM AND POST-IMPRESSIONISM AT THE ART INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very nice, if it's what your looking for
Just exactly as described in summary.A LARGE collection of paintings from the Chicago Art Institute with short blurbs on each one.

PLUSES
- The blurbs are interesting info & help bring the paintings to life. For instance, for Degas's two dancers it comments that the models who posted were older than Degas choose to paint them. Also that he used the same yellow undertones of the background in the skin tone of the girls. When looking at the photo this warm comes through & makes it special & this comment brings attention to why.The descriptions add a great deal of value, while not eliminating room for the paintings themselves or overwhelming with text.

- Large number of paintings, & photos are ample sized on the page.

MINUSES
- There is a slight lack of crispness to the prints of the paintings, so they don't "pop" off the page the way they could. If you've seen the painting already, you'll project in the clarity. If you haven't, it's hard to appreciate the details of the brush strokes in the originals, or how beautiful they are in person. The cover page is more impressive, large & vibrant than the inside shots.

- It's specifically only works from this museum. Many of the famous & prettiest impressionist works are elsewhere (Europe), for instance Van Goghs "Irises" or Renoirs "Parisian Scenes".So, if you are looking for an overview or appreciation of impressionism, it's a little limited. It does effectively cover many of the techniques & concepts of impressionism well in the scope of paintings.

I was getting it for a 6 year old who notices artwork. If I were to go back to researching, I'd find a book not specific to a museum but rather to the genre so it included more of the outstandingly famous works.

- There are no other close ups crops such as the cover page is.The cover is just one face out of an entire painting. That would make an interesting book.

SUMMARY
I paid around $15 which is much less than many list for, & it was in great condition.Maybe for $30 for a like-new, it would have popped better on slightly starker white paper, but I doubt it.

I'm pleased with the book & the six year old is glowing about her "grown-up" pictures to look at.When I visit her I'm going to take time to read the blurbs & learn. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Textbook for Modern Art
I bought this book for a class, and for a textbook, it's definitely easier to read than most.Unfortunately, it covers a lot of material very quickly, as you must in class, and so jumps from artist to artist and style to style in a bit of a jerky manner. They make the transitions as easy as possible, I just wish we could get more information on the artists, like stories from their lives explaining some of their personalities before we move on to the next.It would make it easier to remember and differentiate between the artists of a period.

1-0 out of 5 stars HORRIBLE; Basically one long Critique by Three Authors.
I would NOT recommend this Book.Hunter, Jacobus and Wheeler are very critical and often lend their opinions intrusively with lack of reason / explanation.I had this book for Two Art History classes, the Instructor rarely referenced it, because of the Authors. If you are new to art or want to learn more this is NOT the book!
Example at the end of Chapter 13:"Later, the new style would be used more literally, even daringly, in the "development" of the new city, a process that would also bring with it the wasting, if not complete destruction, of the undervalued heritage of the recent past."Note the Authors spend most of the paragraph bashing the Rockefelier Center in New York. They never explain why it is "bland" or how the effort becomes "pallid".You will literally read chapters over and over, finding little tangible support for the authors conclusions.Imagine the Snobbiest / Know it All Person you know then think about how they would write a book.
MINUSES:
The pictures:Are way to dark, Some are discolored and Stretched to fit the page. Not enough pictures of Architecture.
The chapters are not well organized.
The book over concentrates on Language and Voice:Therefore becoming inconclusive gibberish.
It Fails to bring meaning to its own Title; Modern Art.By the end of the book the reader has No Idea what Modern Art is in a whole:where it has been, why it changed, stylistic elements, political context, and etc.

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't even go near this one without a BIG Dictionary.
I just completed a college course with this book as the chosen Textbook. The writing was of a much more advanced nature and it actually seemed like it should have been for a more advanced course.Like the title of this review says, you get an advanced English lesson also. It's mainly an Education book, so it probably should be geared more to the Student-through-expert levels. Like most books on art, it is a shame that so many illustrations are in Black & White. It's a cost thing I suppose. The information and opinions were well balanced. The text also has very little unnecessary "Fluff" fillers. I would have no intention of selling the book or trading it away. It's a keeper.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best approach
Everybody knows the boring of reading introduction material about art. It's always more of the same. Because of that I suspected very much this book with its "open title"... No reason for that: Modern Art is a careful work about 20th century aesthetics, crossing an open and contextual perspective with closed analysis of key works. And best of all, the synthetic approach of painting, sculpture and architecture is very well balanced and justified. It's not a book, but a very good surprise as both an introduction as a very deep analysis of 20th century art.

4-0 out of 5 stars pleasing catalogue of renowned Danish Museum
I purchased this catalogue on the strength of previous Royal Academy publications. This volume is an overview of artworks on view in the Carlsberg Glyptotek, Copenhagen. The museum was established by Carl and Helge Jacobsen; their fortune being made from the famous Carlsberg brewery.

The exhibits are a rather disparate lot; divided into sections such as Ancient Egypt, Cypriot antiquities, Etruria, Greco-Roman Sculpture, Danish painting and sculpture plus a sizable selection of French nineteenth century works. I found the Danish section pleasant but conventional and tepid. The ancient works, an area about which I profess little expertise, seem to be of a high standard. There is the usual parade of French artists; names such as Corot, David, Courbet, Manet, Monet, Gauguin and Rodin. Many of these paintings are of high quality but very few have any particular wow factor. The color illustrations are good.
