Product Description

This early 20th-century classic chronicles the adventures of an orphaned newspaper boy in his "hand-to-hand scuffle" with life in a midwestern metropolis. Gene Stratton-Porter's faith in the healing power of nature is also apparent, in a lovingly depicted tamarack swamp set near the city.

I love this author and this is one of my favorite books. So heartwarming! Besides being a fun/fast read, I learned a lot about that period in history.

5-0 out of 5 stars G. Stratton-Porter's book Michael O'Halloran
Michael O'Halloran is another of G. Stratton Porter's great books! It is definitely worth reading!

5-0 out of 5 stars Micheal O'Halloran
Micheal O' Halloran is a favorite book.I enjoy the story about Micky (Micheal) and Peaches (an orphan Micky finds and adopts). The adults that beome involved in Micky's life find him a "live wire" that impress them. The author's love of nature is evident.City verses country is shown and belief in the good in people. This is a well written story. I'd recomend this to anyone.Since it was written in the early 1900's be aware that the style of writing is different than a lot of writing today.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book.
I've read Michael O'Halloran several times over the years.I love it as much today as I did the first time I read it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pleasant Read
I'm 28 and love "feel good" books. This wasn't my favorite of Gene Stratton-Porter's books but it was upbeat and has really sweet moments. There just seemed to be a few repetetive and pointless conversations.Sometimes too, I didn't know exactly where it was going - even though though that's not all bad.All and all, when I was through reading it I felt satisfied.
Try "The Magic Garden".I loved it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it!
This was an amazing story of a family--filled with love
for each other and an astute understanding and acceptance
of themselves. It brought back memories of my growing up
years, of the importance that unconditional love is to
each individual. I couldn't wait to turn the pages and
have recommended it to my own grown children and grand-
children.

5-0 out of 5 stars good book
book was old, and looked well read, but was described as such.I enjoyed the book, and it was in good condition and well packaged.

5-0 out of 5 stars Problem resolved
I ordered Laddie to read for a family classics book club.We meet every other month and discuss a classic we have all read.I had never heard of Laddie before but very much enjoyed it.It has a special flavor about it and a surprise ending. I was disappointed when the binding on my book fell apart and all the pages came loose but the seller refunded my money when I told them about it. Then I went to Kinkos and had it spiral bound.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not to be Missed
LADDIE was one of my favorite books as a child, and reads just as well as an adult.Gene Stratton Porter books maintain their interest and character even in today's world. This kind of book illustrates life in an America that is, sadly, lost forever.

I was one of those who wanted to BE Little Sister, and a part of that world.Like others, I have read it a multitude of times. The writing is magical.

5-0 out of 5 stars ADearStory
I bought this book at a used book sale because it was old.I did not know of the book or the author.I began to read it with interest to see what was between these pages - I was not disappointed.I loved the story as told by the young girl. What a delight she was.She almost became real in my mind and I was sorry to find the book ending.I will try to read more of this author. ... Product Description

Jessamyn West's spirited novel -- set in the Ohio Territory in the early 1880s -- is a handsomely paced adventure for lovers of period romance and suspense. Leafy Rivers is a young bride caught up in emotions she does not altogether understand and cannot quite control. As she races against time to save a life and a marriage that may already be lost, a vivid assortment of characters -- such as Simon Yanders, a man whose loss has taught him generosity and whose grief has made him alert to joy; Cashie Wade, irresistibly wild and free; and Leafy's husband, Reno, whose love is matched only by his ineptitude -- offers challenges that threaten to waylay her at every turn.

By the time you realize there's a problem, it may already be too late. "Leafy Rivers" tells the story of the titular character as she faces life in the later nineteenth century. Product Description

This family story told by Eth Clifford surely is similar to scores of untold family stories of that time of change. Indian blood still flows in the veins of thousands of Hoosiers, some of whom know it, others who don't. When a people is rooted for centuries in a part of the country, no amount of plowing or paving or policy can excise the spirit from it. And so, stories like this one will always be stirring, meaningful and haunting, here in "the Land of the Indians." -- from the Introduction by James Alexander Thom

1819 on the Indiana frontier is a year that Takawsu will come to remember as "the year of the three-legged deer." He and his sister, Chilili, are the children of an Indian mother and a white settler father. Their destinies suddenly become intertwined with that of a lone fawn who has lost a leg -- and his mother -- in a panther attack. Takawsu and Chilili rescue the fawn, nurse him back to health, and raise him as one of their own. But tensions build around this mixed family, as Indians and whites battle for the land. There's a rogue Indian named Stone Eater and a band of whites who senselessly massacre an Indian hunting party. Tempers flare and a trial ensues. In the midst of it all is Maskanako, the lone fawn, who represents purity, resiliency, and goodness. Eth Clifford tells this suspenseful story with compelling sensitivity and authenticity of detail. Sure to engage readers young and old.

Product Description

The Dark Didn't Catch Me tells the story of the Robinson family during the Great Depression in Greene County, Indiana. Seely Robinson is the tenacious 11-year-old heroine, and it is from her perspective that the story is told. It begins when Seely, her two siblings, and her parents relocate to the hills of southern Indiana. There they face a struggle to survive, as Seely's father works to control his anxieties and temper, and as Seely's mother labors through personal disappointment and poverty to raise her family. Seely learns and grows, and in spite of all her troubles, through all of these hardships, ultimately manages to see through the darkness and appreciate the wonder of living.

5-0 out of 5 stars NOW JUST FOR GIRLS-BUT A NOVEL OF THE DEPRESSION DAYS
I recommend this book for all ages.Originally it was written for young girls but over the years since it's 1975 release it has grown into historical fiction fit for all ages.It is a tale of the struggling life during the Depression Era, particularly Greene County, Indiana.

The story is told by young Seely, the second child of Rob and Zel.Her full name is read at graduation, "Caroline Cecilia Robinson", signaling her to come forward and receive the diploma from the one-room school, it's final year prior to being torn down making way for progress in the southern Indiana hills. But that's getting ahead of the story, and not a spoiler. So much growing up and struggle happened from age 11 when the family was forced to the hill location in search of income.Mom hated the hills, the house and the woods.

The story is of the struggles, the joys occasionally found, the anguish, and hard work, the failure to find employment, the need for love, of family crisis, of life as was doled out in those years of the 1930s. At times the story is told with such expression that the reader experiences empathetic melancholy.Fear not, the book is great writing, and leaves you wanting to find another book by Hoosier author, Crystal Thrasher.

So history buffs, teens to grandpas, men, women, home schoolers, teachers, well...anyone enjoying a quick but good read; this is highly recommended.Excuse me as I go shopping for Thrasher's second book, then on to 3 through 5.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful pre-teen angst...
I read this book when I was 12, and it really moved me beyond words. She is caught in that in between world of girl and woman. This story goes beyond just her family; to the lives affected by super hard times during the depression, and how various people handled it.And, to how she feels leaving her old world behind at the end of things...

I really connected to the way Seeley's relationships were described, and therein lies the unique ability of this book to reach a preteen. If a reader is anywhere between 9 and 13, I think it is safe to recommend this book.

I'm buying a copy to have "on hand" so that I can loan it to my preteen niece and one day, give it to my daughter. ... Read more

Product Description
The Cordell Collection of Dictionaries is the world's largest, with over 5100 pre-1901 titles and several thousand more from the twentieth century. A short-title catalog and a compilation of English-language holdings for the pre-1901 materials have been published previously, but here, for the first time, is an extensive conflated listing which interfiles foreign and English-language materials, and gives access to holdings through a date index, a language index, and a subject guide. Organized alphabetically by author (or by title for main-entry titles), the catalog's arrangement by-date under the main entry offers a sense of publishing history for individual lexicographers. The catalog not only contains exact information on the holdings at Indiana State University, but also provides guidance for the use of sources that may be available in other collections. ...
