Product Description
"Business and Politics in Indonesia" focuses on the ways in which sections of business attempt to organize themselves to secure a voice in the policy-making process and it throws light upon key elements of the political system. It puts forward an argument which challenges the prevailing view that the government is able to control the political system tightly. Forces of economic and political change at work in Indonesia are facilitating a new assertiveness by some business groups and are loosening the government's grip on the policy process. "Business and Politics in Indonesia" provides a close analysis of the ways in which government and industry actually interact in the formation of policy, and the book ties this to a wider assessment of the direction of political change in Indonesia. Andrew MacIntyre has conducted extensive research into the dynamics of relations between government and business in Indonesia, as well as in Thailand and South Korea. He currently lectures in political science in the Division of Asian and International Studies, at Griffith University in Brisbane. This book is intended for students and researchers in Asian studies, and politics. ... Read more

Product Description
Indonesia's democratisation since 1998 has been accompanied by armed separatist struggles in Aceh and Irian Jaya. There has also been ethnic and religious conflict in Maluku (the Spice Islands) and other provinces. At the same time, Islamic movements have grown in strength. Other states in South-East Asia and beyond are increasingly concerned over the possible security threats from these problems. Refugee crises, spreading religious and ethnic conflict, and piracy are their main worries. This book provides an up-to-date and in-depth analysis of the growing problems of the world's fourth most populous state and largest Muslim country. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Dense Political History of Indonesia
This book is a good book if you are interested in the political development of the Indonesian government in the twentieth century. Starting with the Dutch rule through the Japanese occupation to Independance. Dahm makes it clear that the feeling of nationalism has always been present since the end of the 19th century and does that convincingly.

The book however is not an easy read. It is dense and full with names and not always easy to keep track of. It is definitely not a book to give to someone on a birthday. It is however perfect when someone is interested in the development of government in Indonesia with names like Hatta, Suharto and Sukarno.

Product Description
This book examines the dynamics shaping the economic process of economic liberalisation in Indonesia since the mid-1980's. Much writing on the process of economic liberalisation in developing countries views economic liberalisation as the victory of economic rationality over political and social interests. In contrast, this book argues that economic liberalisation should not be understood in these terms, but rather in the way that political social interests shape processes of economic reform in both a positive and negative sense. Specifically, Rosser argues that economic liberalisation needs to be understood in terms of the extent to which economic crises shift the balance of power and influence within society away from coalitions opposed to reform and towards those in favour of reform. In the Indonesian context, the main coalitions that need to be examined in this respect are the politico-bureaucrats and the conglomerates who have generally opposed reform and mobile capitalists who have generally supported reform.
Based on extensive original research, and providing much new material, the book considers the politics of economic policy-making in Indonesia in a range of sectors including the capital market, intellectual property law, the banking industry, and the trade and investment sectors. Analysing why the nature of economic policy in Indonesia has varied over time, this study argues that there is nothing inevitable about a transition to a fully-fledged liberal market order in Indonesia, and outlines possible future scenarios for the country's political economy. ... Product Description
Indonesia is a country of superlatives and contradictions: its 17,000 islands span an extent that is wider than the landmass of the USA; it is the fourth most populous country in the world, and its Muslim population is the world's largest; more than half of the total population of 203 million live on the island of Java, which is smaller in size than England.

Indonesia is rich in natural resources, but vulnerable to devastating natural hazards. Its economy was booming until the late 1990s, when it was badly damaged by the Asian financial crisis. After 30 years of the corrupt and oppressive Suharto regime, Indonesia is now struggling to redefine itself as a constitutional democracy – but internal ethnic and inter-religious conflicts threaten the very future of the nation, if they cannot be resolved peacefully.

This richly illustrated Profile is a picture of a country in economic, political, and environmental crisis, seen from the perspective of the poor and marginalized communities with whom Oxfam works. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars brief introduction to a huge country
The book is meant for someone with no prior knowledge of Indonesia. Itgives a quick overview of a large and diverse nation. Sprawling over thousands of islands and with still vast poverty. There is a very brief synopsis of its history. But most space is devoted to the current Indonesia. With speculations as to how secure is the democracy.

And also about the very future of the nation. Separatist movementsare active in West Papua and Aceh. While in Maluku, there is recurring tribal and religious strife between Muslim and Christian groups. Indeed, just a few days ago, 3 Christian ringleaders of a riot againstMuslims were executed.

Under the Suharto dictatorship, repressive methods held the country together. While under a democracy, the lessening of this repression has led to greater calls for regional autonomy. Breakup one day? ... Read more

Product Description
Indonesia broke off relations with China in 1967 and resumed them only in 1990.Rizal Sukma asks why. His answers shed light on Indonesia's foreign policy, the nature of the New Order's domestic politics, the mixed functions of diplomatic ties, the legitimacy of the new regime, and the role of President Suharto. Rizal Sukma argues that the matter of Indonesia restoring diplomatic ties with China is best understood in terms of the efforts made by the military-based New Order government to sustain its political legitimacy. The analysis in this book proves that an absence as well as a presence of diplomatic relations may advance not only the external but the domestic interests of an incumbent government. This is the first major study on Indonesia and China's diplomatic relations under the New Order government. It will be illuminating for research students and lecturers in international politics, international relations, policy making and diplomacy ... Read more

Product Description

The political downfall of the Suharto administration in 1998 marked the end of the "New Order" in Indonesia, a period characterized by 32 years of authoritarian rule. It opened the way for democracy, but also for the proliferation of political Islam, which the New Order had discouraged or banned. Many of the issues raised by Muslim groups concerned matters pertaining to gender and the body. They triggered heated debates about women’s rights, female political participation, sexuality, pornography, veiling, and polygamy.

The author argues that public debates on Islam and Gender in contemporary Indonesia only partially concern religion, and more often refer to shifting moral conceptions of the masculine and feminine body in its intersection with new class dynamics, national identity, and global consumerism. By approaching the contentious debates from a cultural sociological perspective, the book links the theoretical domains of body politics, the mediated public sphere, and citizenship. Placing the issue of gender and Islam in the context of Indonesia, the biggest Muslim-majority country in the world, this book is an important contribution to the existing literature on the topic. As such, it will be of great interest to scholars of anthropology, sociology, and gender studies.

Product Description
Major General Suharto seized command of the Indonesian military in October 1965 and appointed himself president only a short while after. Forced to resign in 1998 due to nation-wide outrage, protests, and riots, Suharto exemplifies how the military (and particularly the Army) have played a central role in Indonesian politics and intervened in all aspects of civilian life. The authors argue that the lack of support in the government and military for Suharto in 1998 originates from decisions made in the 1960s regarding the structure of the army. This monograph investigates trends in career advancement for officers (a line of study disregarded by other works that focus primarily upon ideological and political factors) and devotes painstakingly detailed attention to the bureaucratic dynamics that have had such extensive political implications. 1999. 98 pages. ... Product Description
`After a quarter century of double-digit growth, 135 million rural migrants were living in China's cities by 2007. This massive migration exceeds anything else recorded in human history. Based on new survey data, The Great Migration explores cause and effect while comparing China's restrictive with Indonesia's liberal migration policies. The result is the best book on rural-urban migration thus far.'
- Jeffrey G. Williamson, Harvard University and University of Wisconsin, US

This fascinating study compares and contrasts the immense internal migration movements in China and Indonesia. Over the next two decades, approximately two-thirds of the rural labour force is expected to migrate, transforming their respective societies from primarily rural to urban based.

Whilst both countries face similar challenges as hundreds of millions of people move, the policies implemented and their consequences are very different. Using an extensive range of qualitative and quantitative data, the contributors explore the impact of migration on migrants and their families, as well as the rural communities they leave behind and the urban communities they enter. They discover that migrants earn less and face discrimination in the urban labour market, although more so in China where there are greater restrictions. However migration contributes to a more equal distribution of income in urban China and to lowering poverty in rural China, and migrants fare better on health and poverty indicators in Indonesia.

The Great Migration will strongly appeal to researchers, economists and sociologists with a special interest in migration and development studies. Policy-makers in both China and Indonesia will also find much to fascinate them within this highly original book. ... Read more
