a new model for literacy instruction
I had read a couple of articles by Follos so I knew I would be ordering her book. I was not disappointed.
Her success in motivating older students to read through author visits and reading aloud to them is an encouragement to me as a literacy coach: I am not alone in believing in the power of shared oral reading and writer visits for older students.
When teachers present authors like rock stars and "Oprah" the books kids are invited to read, that enthusiasm spills over into the very act of reading itself.
Motivating adolescent readers to pick up a book and then engaging them in reading that continues for a lifetime is our job as literacy leaders. Follos will show you the way.

Additionally, each chapter furnishes an annotated bibliography of other books that would lend themselves easily to the teaching of this strategy. Grades K-3.

The book is written particularly for the use of teacher librarians who are being asked to support actual reading instruction as part of the instructional program in their library media center (as opposed to the usual program of literary appreciation, reading motivation etc), but are not given long periods of time to work with students. These lessons are quick and self-contained. Each lesson comes with reproducible templates to make laminated graphic organizers that can be used again and again with various books to teach each of the ten strategies. Elementary teachers would also find this book useful.

Overpriced for Material Included
I am a teacher who is taking advantage of my library background to become a school librarian.As I browsed literature in the field this book was exciting for me.I very much want to continue my literacy instruction in my new position.Unfortunately, I would consider it highly overpriced ($30+) for the content given.Included are 10 basic reading strategies (including KWL charts, prediction skills) that is likely familiar to those who are experienced in the classroom.Beyond that it costs twice as much as books tend to when offering "cookbook" lessons for teaching (and I mean no insult by that phrase owning several of these books myself).This book would be helpful to those without a background in teaching, but otherwise is a waste of money.
