Product Description

Although intarsia—the assembly of various woods into a unified mosaic piece—is often perceived as a challenging, unapproachable woodcraft, this guidebook rejects that notion by describing the small, achievable steps, thereby offering crafters an easy entry-point into this rewarding art form. Following a progression, this resource starts simply, teaching how to cut basic shapes and introducing sanding concepts, and then leads to more advanced skills, such as stack cutting and finishing techniques that add shading and grain to the mosaic masterpiece. Each step is organized into 17 total mini-lessons, including practice exercises and a final step-by-step guided project. Five additional patterns for each skill level round out the chapters for a total of 20 patterns.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Intarsia Patterns
I have purchased more than one intarsia book and this is by far my favorite. Kathy has broken down a seemingly difficult process into simple steps that are easy to follow. Great step by step photos show the entire process. Also ingenious tips are added throughout the book. Very well written with a great pattern selection which includes a pouch in the back with oversize patterns ready to copy and cut. I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great instructional book
Being new to scroll sawing, I appreciate the fact that this book has lots of pictures, diagrams and detailed instructions. It explains techniques, tips and tricks from project beginning to finish in easy to follow language. It also includes a lot of great patterns that go from simple to very detailed. If you're new to scroll sawing, I highly recommend this book.I believe skilled scroll saw workers will find useful information in this book as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
For someone starting to get serious about using a scroll saw, this is a fine book. It's well illustrated with close up color photos; it has several different types of projects, most of which I'll never use. I purchased it because I build RC planes and ship models. It replaced am older, smaller saw. Notice the title "woodworking". It's not just about the saw. Excellent book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great!!
This is a great book.I wasn't sure if I should get it, because I couldn't find any reviews anywhere.I decided to go for it, because it was written by the people at scroll saw magazine.I'm glad I did.I've only read the first chapter so far with basic "how to" info.I'm already seeing a huge improvement in my projects.I'm getting smoother cuts and crisper corners, and doing it at a faster pace.I can't wait to do some of the projects they provide. The only improvement I would suggest is making it spiral bound for easier photo-copying of the patterns. ... Product Description
HANDBOOKS FOR THE DESIGNER AND CRAFTSMAN.
EXAMINER TO THE BOARD OF EDUCATION IN PRINCIPLES OF ORNAMENT.
Intarsia is a form of wood inlaying that is similar to marquetry. The term is also used for a similar technique used with small, highly polished stones set in a marble matrix.
The technique of intarsia inlays sections of wood (at times with contrasting ivory or bone, or mother-of-pearl) within the solid stone matrix of floors and walls or of table tops and other furniture; by contrast marquetry assembles a pattern out of veneersglued upon the carcase. It is thought that the word 'intarsia' is derived from the Latin word 'interserere' which means "to insert". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Intarsia
Bought this as a Christmas present for my husband. He has gotten a lot of useful tips from the book and some really nice patterns. Nice book for people interested in Intarsia.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good start for the Newbie
If you are just starting in Intarsia, as am I, this is a good reference to get some knowledge of the art and how to get rolling - or sawing as the case may be.The step-by-step description of a first project gives one more information than some need, but it certainly gives insight to the detail and proceedure required. The patterns included in the book willget you started in fine fashion.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but misleading cover
I am just learning the art of intarsia, and this book had some helpful information. However, I was quite disappointed that none of the patterns in the book are for the pieces on the back cover (does and fawn, rearing horse, duck)- only the front cover patterns are included.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lost in the woods

Product Description
Intarsia is a craft of precision and artistry. A picture is created by cutting out and then fitting together many pieces of differently colored and textured woods, much like a jigsaw puzzle. These pieces are then rounded and shaped individually, to create realistic contours and lend a three-dimensional effect. When the pieces are varnished, fitted together, and glued onto a backboard, they make a beautifully polished, professional-looking piece. Step-by-step, this book shows you how to make an intarsia teddy bear wall hanging, perfect for a childs bedroom. The project is ideal for someone just starting to learn the art of intarsia, teaching basic techniques (from selecting your wood to hanging your finished piece) and showing how to deal with common difficulties and pitfalls. Also included are patterns for a girl teddy bear and a dinosaur. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars wildlife intarsia book
This is an excellent book for intarsia patterns. I have made many projects using this books patterns. A must have for anyone with a scroll saw.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to Intarsia
This is an excellent book on intarsia. The introduction is basic and clear, going over wood choices, various tools, pattern preparation and various techniques to shape and sculpt the wood. It also goes over gluing and finishing. One valuable technique they explain is the use of sanding shims which allows multiple pieces of wood to be sanded into one smooth cohesive shape.

There are fourteen animal portraits in the book. They are, bald eagle, mustang, moose, burro, polar bear, red fox, arctic wolf, bobcat, buffalo, white tailed deer, jack rabbit, big horn ram, raccoon, and wolf.

The bald eagle pattern is followed by a step by step photo demonstration on how to make it. The mustang and moose also have demonstrations following them. From there the level of instruction fades quickly to footnotes, but by then everything is explained.

The patterns are extraordinary. I am familiar with the look of various animals and choosy about animal art, but aside from several very minor lines I would tweak (because I am nit-picky) I am satisfied. Each is true to the actual animal and nicely designed.

The book has two minor drawbacks, both related to the patterns. There are no patterns for the sanding shims for each design. Though there are small photos of the shapes of the sanding shims, so a little calculation should be enough to replicate them.

The second drawback is that most of the patterns seem to be on the simpler side of intermediate, or just intermediate. There are no simple beginner patterns, and there are none that would challenge experts. But with the clear instructions, a reasonably determined novice with some experience on a scroll saw (like me, my first pattern from this book nearly finished) should be successful. And experts will probably appreciate the skillfully designed patterns. So I couldn't let this detract from the rating.

Another book is Kathy Wise's Intarsia Woodworking Projects: 21 Original Designs with Full-Size Plans and Expert Instruction for All Skill Levels (A Scroll Saw, Woodworking & Crafts Book) which also has good writing and has good patterns for all skill levels. This is preferable for raw beginners or an advanced scroller looking for a fearsome challenge.

But if you like wild animal portraits and want to make them in Intarsia, this is your book.
