Editorial Review

Product Description
This book expounds trade theory emphasizing that a trading equilibrium is general rather than partial, and is often best modelled using dual or envelope functions. This yields a compact treatment of standard theory, clarifies some errors and confusions, and produces some new departures. In particular, the book (i) gives unified treatments of comparative statics and welfare, (ii) sheds new light on the factor-price equalization issue, (iii) treats the modern specific-factor model in parallel with the usual Heckscher-Ohlin one, (iv) analyses the balance of payments in general equilibrium with flexible and fixed prices, (v) studies imperfect competition and intra-industry trade. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A good book for international trade, but not perfect
The book gets into rather good discusion of basic models, equilibrium and more advanced topics. The math level of the book is at a graduate level and many of the results are done with enough details, discussion and algebra. However, the book suffers from lack of algebra and enough reasoning in the first chapters where it is describing basic models. The notation of the book is sometimes confusing too (I think this problem exists in all of the books about international trade). Besides, the book is rather old and may be missing some topics. A complementarity text for this book is recommended. ... Read more

Product Description
Models of international trade are enriched by including multinationalfirms. Factors associated with multinational activity like trade cost, marginal cost, fixed cost, complementarities and scale effects areinvestigated in monopolistically competitive two- and three-country- models of general equilibria. Different frameworks and cost structureslead to several implications for the integration of firms, which can belinked to a business administration approach and analysis of the firm'sstrategic management. The high accuracy of numerical models ofmultinational firms in a general equilibrium approach explain a widerange of multinational firms' activities in modern international trade. ... Read more

Product Description
This book deals with the impact that international trade is likely to have on the skilled-unskilled wage gap in a typical developing economy. This is the first theoretical monograph on this particular issue which has already generated substantial debate and voluminous work for the developed countries. A unique feature of this work is that it tries to explain the possibility of rising inequality across trading nations and looks at the segmented labour markets of the poor economies. It makes convincing arguments that the standard general equilibrium models, the main workhorse of trade theory, can be given a creative facelift to address a number of critical and emerging issues in the area of trade and development. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
This report was created for global strategic planners who cannot be content with traditional methods of segmenting world markets. With the advent of a "borderless world", cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market.

In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. From an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist or strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another.

In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for the world's major cities for "printing and binding of general and trade books" for the year 2009. The goal of this report is to report my findings on the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by a city when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales. ... Read more
