Product Description
The Commands Guide Tutorial for SolidWorks 2010 is a comprehensive reference book written to assist beginner to intermediate users of SolidWorks. SolidWorks is an immense software package, and no one book can cover all topics for all users. The book provides a centralized reference location to address many of the System and Document properties, FeatureManagers, PropertyManagers, ConfigurationManagers and RenderManagers along with 2D and 3D Sketch tools, Sketch entities, 3D Feature tools, Motion Study, SustainabilityXpress, DFMXpress, SimulationXpress, Sheet Metal, PhotoView 360 and more.

Chapter 1 provides a basic overview of the concepts and terminology used throughout this book using SolidWorks 2010 software. If you are completely new to SolidWorks, you should read Chapter 1 in detail and complete Lesson 1, Lesson 2 and Lesson 3 in the SolidWorks Tutorials.

If you are familiar with an earlier release of SolidWorks, you still might want to skim Chapter 1 to become acquainted with some of the commands, menus and features that you have not used; or you can simply jump to any section in any chapter.

Each chapter (17 total) provides detailed PropertyManager information on key topics with individual stand alone short tutorials to reinforce and demonstrate the functionality and ease of the SolidWorks tool or feature. All models for the 230 plus tutorials are located on the enclosed CD with their solution (initial and final). Learn by doing, not just by reading!

Formulate the skills to create, modify and edit sketches and solid features. Learn the techniques to reuse features, parts and assemblies through symmetry, patterns, copied components, design tables, configurations and more.

The book is designed to compliment the Online Tutorials and Online Help contained in SolidWorks 2010. The goal is to illustrate how multiple design situations and systematic steps combine to produce successful designs.

The authors developed the tutorials by combining their own industry experience with the knowledge of engineers, department managers, vendors and manufacturers. These professionals are directly involved with SolidWorks everyday. Their responsibilities go far beyond the creation of just a 3D model.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best teacher of all
This is a clear and far-reaching reference book for SolidWorks 2010. There are a number of books on the market today, but this is one of the best; it's a virtual bible of detail using a true step-by-step tutorial approach to learning - an ideal teaching method for me. Recently, I was "re-organized" and my job now involves me using a lot more of this great CAD software.

The book is very useful to the beginner, but as you become more in tune with the software, the book becomes more and more valuable. It is very well structured and easy to follow and understand with hundreds of illustrations, helpful tips and constructive design comments. All SolidWorks models are included on the CD which is a big plus. I can say that this book possibly is the best teacher I have ever had.

5-0 out of 5 stars Straight to the point and very informative
I purchased two SolidWorks books based on the reviews and Author's notes/comments - this one and the Bible. I would not recommend the bible for a new user. This Commands guide is a marvelous first class book, well written and referenced, extremely clear - as if having a SolidWorks CAD instructor sitting right next to you. I was a new user to this product and I feel today very comfortable to do my tasks on SolidWorks and feel that this book would be an excellent guide even for intermediate users. Having all of the initial and final models in each exercise is great. The short tutorials are just long enough to learn the feature or tool. No a lot of wasted talk.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a great book to learn Solidworks
I graduated from college last year without a job in engineering. I'm now trying to brush up on my 3D CAD skills and purchased this book. What a great SolidWorks book for the new (semi-new) user. I wished that my school used this book when I was taking Solidworks in class. It has 100s of short tutorials that are to the point to learn most needed skills in SolidWorks. The CD (it works) has the initial and final models for you to compare the featuremanager. You can use the rollback bar on the final models to see how the model was created. Great idea.

5-0 out of 5 stars A keeper for daily use
Another exceptional SolidWorks book by these authors. This reference book is well written and illustrated with hundreds of short to the point tutorials without a lot of long winded verbiage, but just enough to comprehend the tool.

The book is great for the novice to intermediate user who is looking for a comprehensive, well structured, educational SolidWorks reference book. This is a famous addition to the SolidWorks online help. A keeper!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A truly great reference book
After using SolidWorks for four plus years, I decided to purchase a reference book. I'm very surprise with the amount of useful information in this book. I didn't expect to learn so much about best practices and different ways to create models - but I did. I found this book downright addictive with its short tutorials and tips on simple and complex geometry. The chapter on sustainability and DFMxpress has enlightened my view on the way I select material and create parts for manufacturing. The alterative material library in sustainability is amazing. Now this is a usefully book. Do you write a book for Sheet metal fabrication? ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but could be better
This book is as described a guide to using AutoCad 2011.It fulfills that purpose well, but seems to gloss over important points.I am using it in a drafting class, and it will tell you how to work the program, but provides little help when you are trying to find out what went wrong. It also seems to have a mixed audience that at times seems academic and at other times is clearly tailored to working professionals.

5-0 out of 5 stars A tutorial Guide to Autocad 2011 - The return
After two years of seclusion (Last edition was 2008), "A Tutorial Guide to AutoCAD 2011" reappeared as good as it has ever been.It is an excellent text book for beginners and Intermediate AutoCAD users. Those wanted to learn solid modeling will love it, as I consider these the best chapters in the book. Each tutorial is well described and easy to follow.Data files for tutorials are provided via download from the publisher's website.Compared to previous editions, the quality of the textbook decreased a bit. However, this was not the case for its content. Each chapter has substantial information written in a very sequential and organized format. Price is very reasonable.

Thanks Mrs. Lockhart and SDC.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly easy to learn Autocad with no prior experience
I had no prior experience with Autocad and was able to learn the program without any problems. This book assumes you know nothing about Autocad and is great about walking you through every step, even for those that have minimal computer skills to begin with. The tips in the margins were particulary helpful, making sure that things were clarified if you didn't understand something the first time or that there were other options for doing things.I was impressed at how easily I was able to pick up the program through the use of this book and will continue to access the book as a reference. This is a great tutorial and reference manual!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent tutorial and good reference
If you want a thorough grounding in AutoCAD, this book will give it to you.The writing is clear, concise and thorough. The author starts from the very beginning, assuming the reader knows nothing about AutoCAD, and builds through essential construction and drawing skills, then goes on to provide a solid foundation in engineering and architectural drawing topics such as dimensioning, modeling and rendering. This is the best text for learning AutoCAD I have seen. For only a small fraction of the cost of AutoCAD itself, this book adds quite a bit to the usability of AutoCAD.I think Autodesk should bundle this book with every copy they sell. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Concept is the key word
This book addresses Symbian OS in a large context, take chapter 5 for example, it first talks about basic concepts of process scheduling, then goes to scheduling strategies such FCFS, SJF, round-robin, priority, multiple-queuing and real-time, then it covers scheduling in Linux and microkernel architecture, finally it covers scheduling in Symbian OS within one page.

It's broad but a little bit shallow. It also lacks coverage of device driver, overall a very good book for casual reading. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The only Trick is getting you to pay $$ for this book
I read the other reviews on this book and should have listen.

I bought the book to help me with using imagemagick within PHP.(I didn't test the command line stuff as I wanted to use imagemagick in php applications).

Anyway, i downloaded the sample applications from the website they give in the book.NONE... I REPEAT NONE... of the applications worked flawlessly. They either had errors or didn't display anything on the screen.I tried the examples in Chapter 8.

I had to add $ to variables that were missing them. When i finally fixed all the errors for their "confirmation box" script the screen is blank.I added code to display back to me "what the variables were holding" and i can see that the "characters" are being generated but... they are just "not displaying on the screen".I tend believe that's because there's not code written to make it do that.We... have to do that ourselves but... they don't tell you that in the beginning. They display a box saying "type the characters you see..." so naturally i expect to see that. But not so.

I tried the other 2 scripts in chapter 8 (the watermark one) again nothing but a blank screen. The ecard works somewhat but no text is displayed on the image like it shows in the book.further investigation shows that they are "NOT" even getting to step #2 which contains all the Imagemagick code.I try pointing the ecard7.htm to step #2 and then find there are errors in the script.I fix them and i get to another script that also has errors msg.

All said i gave up trying to get these applications to work. It's clear these scripts are "NOT COMPLETE" and are "heavily filled with errors.

All said i could go on but simply put the code came directly from their site so it's no excuse why the code is filled with "errors" such as $ missing from in front of variables.

As i said... the tricks are that you have been "encouraged" to buy this book. They don't give complete examples, it seems you are expected to "add stuff" to their code.But... they don't tell you that you have too.I think this book was rushed to press (they may have been running behind on the deadline and figured something is better than nothing). But they should have waited as the only enjoyable part of this book is looking at the cover. The contents inside (with regards the parts dealing with using Imagemagic with PHP) are not complete.

I finally gave up on this book and went online, did some searching on google and found some tutorials to help me with what i needed to accomplish. This book helped me "0%".It was a complete waste of money.

Save your $$, check it out at your local library or visit a bookstore and look inside "BEFORE" purchasing as this book in my opinion is NOT worth 34.99+

Very, Very, Very disappointed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Its a clever title...
This is a *really* bad book.It fails on several levels. The organization is bad.It is poorly written. It is incomplete. It includes almost no explanitory material.Oh, did I mention that the color examples are in black and white?

(1) Image Magick is large and complex. That is where a good book could win over the on-line documentation. The on-line documentation is really useful---if you already know what you are looking for.But it makes it difficult to move beyond what you already understand. The first thing an Image Magick book is going to do is provide some structure to the myriad nooks and crannies of the product. This book doesn't even begin to do that.

(2) The text of this book is brief, chatty and, in many places, downright ungrammatical. The essense of the book is chapter after chapter of "here is a
command line instruction; this is what it produces."One might browse the book in hopes of finding a command line that does (or does within epsilon) what they want to do.But the book will not lead them to a solution or an understanding of a solution.
The book is chatty to the point of pain: "You may ask if there is any solution to affect a specific location with any of these filters."

(3) I solved all of my Image Magick problems (and gained some insight into the tool) through the on-line documentation. It took some time.I read this book and I found
that most of those solutions weren't even touched on in the book.Where is the OReilly book on Image Magick?

(4) Far too many sentences begin with the phrase, "As you can see from the given command line" or something similar. When, in fact, it is not clear at all from the given command line. And there is a dirth of attendant explanatory bulk. There is so much material in Image Magick and this book is pitiously thin, both in size and content.

(5) Hopefully, there are on-line versions of the example outputs from the book.If they exist, they are not easy to find.I didn't find them. The greyed out images in the book leave a lot (okay, everything) to the imagination.

Very, very disappointing.

5-0 out of 5 stars How to use command line utilities with ImageMagick
ImageMagick is a command-line image processing system from ImageMagick Studio, LLC. It is used by websites for dynamic processing and displaying images. If the number of images on your site is not too large, you will probably process the images in a graphics program such as Photoshop and display the images on your site using HTML and CSS. Although it is mostly used by websites with huge numbers of images, another option is to use a command-line system such as ImageMagick to process and display your images on the fly. For example, the free online encyclopedia Wikipedia uses ImageMagick's command-line utilities for their imaging needs.

In this book, Sohail Salehi teaches what ImageMagick is and how to do some nice tricks with it. There are many small workshop exercises throughout the book that reinforce what you have learned. Salehi begins with an introduction and then walks you through installing and configuring ImageMagic on your system. Next, he covers the basic command-line utilities ranging from the simple resizing and formatting of images to applying special effects, watermarks and creating animation all from text-based commands.

I found the second half of the book to be the most useful. It presents several web applications using ImageMagick and PHP. The first was a confirmation-code box. You have probably encountered one of these when you opened an account on the web. It is that little box containing a mystery code of numbers and letters and you must enter this code in the web form to prove that you are a real person filling out the form and not a web robot. Salehi shows you how to use ImageMagick and PHP to generate the mystery code and display it in the web form. Another application that I really liked was a three-step process for a customizable e-card application which uses ImageMagick utilities to create the thumbnail and gallery images for an HTML-based web gallery. He also shows you how to use ImageMagick to dynamically customize the e-cards with text and graphics based on user input.

Sohail Salehi has contributed to over twenty books and many articles related to graphics and programming. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Read and do
This was one of the first SolidWorks books that I purchased about 1.5 years ago to learn 3D modeling coming from a 2D environment; namely AutoCAD. It was also recommend by my local SW VAR due to its short tutorial style and the depth and breath of the coverage and knowledge of the authors. This is a great book to learn 2007 commands and procedures for the new user.
I just purchase this book for a colleague who is using 2007. I saw the long-winded reviewer, who thinks he is a literary genius, and I had to say, read the book. It will teach you SolidWorks. I can hardly wait for your literary updates.

2-0 out of 5 stars Was this book self-published?
I ordered this book because I was recently promoted to a new position that requires the use of SolidWorks 2007. I chose this title from the bewildering array of similar titles by the same authors because it seemed to offer complete coverage of the application.

I must warn you that I have not worked all the way through the book yet, having just received it a few days ago. I have worked through the first chapter, which includes 3 or 4 tutorials. The tutorials seem fine, and I am sure that I will learn a great deal while using this text.

However, I have to say, this book appears to have been edited by a chimpanzee with a highlighter. There are spelling errors, grammatical errors, errors in the tutorials, incomplete sentences, run-on sentences and more. And I say again - I'm only through the first chapter. Nearly all of the errors I mention above appear in the front matter - before you even get to the meat of the text.

I will continue to work through the book, and I will come back here and update this review when I am finished, but I am a technical writer by profession and I am literally offended by the quality of this text. It's hard to believe that a book that's been through as many editions as this one has still has this many typographical errors in it. The information might be correct and complete, and I may very well learn what I need to know by slogging through it, but it sure isn't going to be a pleasant experience, based on my experience so far.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just o.k.
Hmmm. When I bought this book, I thought it would have been more extensive and give more examples even though it's a relatively big book already. It's similar to the SW Help that comes with the software, but in a handy book form for reference. Still, there is no substitute for the tutorial books that Solidworks produces ( if you can find them on ebay or elsewhere ) or afford to take a SW class.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great reference book
I purchased this reference book a few weeks ago. This is the second book that I purchased for these authors. I've been using SolidWorks for approximately three months. Before SolidWorks, I was using Pro/E for three long and dreadful years.

The book is a gem. It is a great reference book targeted towards the beginner to intermediate user. It provides a wealth of information on sketching; 2D and 3D, standard and advance features, drawings, assemblies, and more.

After each feature or tool, the author provides an illustration of the PropertyManager, and a tutorial to practice what you learned. The enclosed CD provides the initial and final models for all of the tutorials. This is a great book for anyone that is looking to learn, explore, and try new features and options.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book!
Informative and easy to follow. Still, there are some fields which could be better covered. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Many errors need to be corrected.
Mr. Ferraro is obviously a person who understands ProE extremely well and has a book that is very well outlined to teach the beginner. However, the publisher should have gone to the expense of hiring a proof reader.Thetext is filled with errors in the the text when it refers to tables andfigures and some of the lessons are in error, which makes it very difficultfor the student to guess what it is he is suppose to do in some instances. The book (and CD in a few cases) both are in bad need of an updated versionto eleminate errors. ... Read more

Product Description
The ASP.NET mobile controls give developers the tools they need to create sites and applications that are accessible from a variety of devices. They are contained in an optional add-in called the Microsoft Mobile Internet Toolkit, which can be installed on top of the .NET Framework. This toolkit contains the controls themselves, plus some additional functionality that can be utilized by Visual Studio .NET for producing mobile applications.

This book is designed to cover three areas. The first section teaches the basic concepts of mobile development, and walks the reader through the basics of WAP, WML, and the concepts of devices with limitations in size, memory, screen, bandwidth, etc. The core section of the book goes on to teach ASP.NET developers how to create mobile controls to produce targeted output suitable for viewing on one of these devices. The next section then applies this to Visual Studio .NET, with chapters showing how to do this from within the Studio environment. The book finishes with a case study, collecting the concepts discussed throughout the book into a worked example. This book teaches the ASP.NET programmer all of the necessary concepts they need to understand to be able to competently create applications using these controls.

I bought this book as a part of my graduate coursework in telecommunications field.I was truly disappointed with the book and suprised that it is even required for graduate school curriculum. The author in many cases is contradicting herself from one chapter to another. There are a couple of typing errors in the book too.The writing is poor. The information Ms. Laino is sharing with the public is nothing new for the people who have been in the industry for a while.I would recommend it only for the individuals who know absolutely nothing about telecommunications and need vary basic guidelines on how to manage Telecommunications systems and resources. ... Product Description
A fast-paced and practical tutorial guide for C# developers starting out with MCMS 2002

  • Learn directly from recognized community experts
  • Rapid developer level tutorials build logically through out the book
  • Develops a feature rich custom site incrementally
  • Tips and Tricks from developer newsgroups and online communities

In DetailMicrosoft Content Management Server 2002 is a dynamic web publishing system with which you can build websites quickly and cost-efficiently. MCMS provides the administration, authoring, and data management functionality, and you provide the website interface, logic, and workflow. Once your website is up and running, your content contributors can add and edit content on their own, without the need to work with developers or the IT department.

First time developers of Microsoft Content Management Server 2002 face a relatively steep learning curve. Not only are they expected to be conversant in the Microsoft .NET Framework, they are also required to be familiar with the concepts of MCMS 2002.

Many beginners to MCMS start out by looking at the example site that ships with the product; tweaking it, dissecting it and turning it inside out using the obscure code comments as markers. However, when it comes to starting their own website from scratch, many are baffled ? where do they begin?

This book exists to answer that question; teaching the essential concepts of MCMS 2002 in a clear, straightforward and practical manner.

Containing answers to some of the most asked questions in developer newsgroups, this book is a treasure trove of tricks and tips for solving the problems faced by MCMS developers.

This is a unique resource focused exclusively on the needs of developers using MCMS. It doesn?t waste time and pages on user or administrator level information that is well covered in other documentation. It?s a distillation of practical experience that developers need to get results, fast. The authors carefully structured example project complements and extends the knowledge gained from an initial look at the examples that ship with MCMS.

What you will learn from this book?

  • The basic concepts of MCMS
  • Preparing, installing and configuring MCMS and its supporting technologies
  • Creating an MCMS website from scratch
  • Creating and debugging templates files and channel rendering scripts
  • Working with dynamic navigation
  • Establishing user roles and rights
  • Authoring with MCMS and improving the authoring experience
  • Understanding and customizing workflow
  • Working with the Publishing API
  • Site deployment techniques
  • Enhancing your site's performance with caching

Approach

Years of active participation in MCMS newsgroups and mailing lists mean that the authors? hard-won experience puts them in the ideal position to tell you what you really need to know to master the system.

An example site is developed throughout the book, at every point providing clear and practical demonstrations of the relevant ideas. Once you have mastered the basics, the book leads you onto more advanced and powerful techniques, allowing you to get the most from this awesome system.

Who this book is written for?

This book is written for developers who are part of a dynamic organization that has decided to evaluate or deploy MCMS and require the skills to make it happen. The book presumes a working knowledge of the .NET Framework and familiarity with the C# language, but no prior knowledge of MCMS is required. To use this book, you will need access to Visual Studio. NET 2002 or 2003, SQL Server 2000, and an installation of MCMS 2002.

This book is not aimed at the specific information needs of administrators or users of MCMS. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best MCMS book on the market.
This book is THE book to get if you are learning MCMS. It is comprehensive and thorough. Stefan is the guru or all things MCMS. He always knows the answer and his answers are always right. There is no better authority on MCMCs.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have, But Starting to Rust
I agree with the other reviewers that this is just about the best book you could ask for as a developer just getting started with MCMS 2002.However, if you want to take advantage of new technologies like .NET 2.0, SQL Server 2005 and Microsoft Visual Studio 2005, you'll also want Lim Mei Ying and Stefan Gosner's other MCMS collaboration: Enhancing Microsoft Content Management Server with ASP.NET 2.0 (ISBN: 1904811523).That book--basically a seven-chapter appendix to this one--is brand-new and will save you a lot of time getting these newer technologies working with MCMS 2002.In fact, I'd say read that first--it will keep you out of some of the rabbit holes this book's examples take you down.

You'll also want to check the publisher's website (packtpub.com) as this book has significant errata and code downloads (though some files referenced in the book are not present in the downloads).

4-0 out of 5 stars This is the kickstart to MCMS development
If you are new to MCMS development, you learn that there are a few key players.Stefan is a key contact at Microsoft on this product. What I found is that this book is an easy-read, and gives the tutorials and comprehensive help to get you going quickly. You can build solutions based solely on the knowledge of this book, and will learn enough to run with MCMS' API.

I found this to be the "read" that I hand to all new developers who join up with me at my client. There are other books out there, and maybe this is not the most comprehensive, but its hands-on and serves as a full lifecycle reference, 3-4 months down the road. There are thoughts in this book on most anything you'd tackle using MCMS.My book definitely has some wear-n-tear.

5-0 out of 5 stars MCMS from the ground up
What I liked most about this book - unlike many technology books - is that it isn't merely based on "dry" theoretical stuff, but rather walks you through setting up a full sample website from scratch and thereby covers all the essential steps for configuring MCMS and development in .NET. The book is sprinkled with tips & tricks as well as answers to frequently asked questions from the MCMS newsgroup, so you'll know how to avoid running into problems or solve them if/when they occur. After you've gone through this book, you will know how to install MCMS, configure MCMS, set up a channel structure, debug template files, understand the publishing workflow, know how channel rendering scripts and default postings work, build navigation controls, build custom placeholder controls, build custom placeholder definitions, understand the PAPI, extend the workflow, implement forms authentication, caching, deployment, SSL. You'll be up and running with MCMS in no time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This is a great book, which would help you start out with no experience in MCMS. The book has all the examples that you need to perform basic tasks and as well as complicated tasks. This book is straightforward and extremely helpful in tapping into both the Publishing API and as well as Deployment API.
Even if your experience is short, this book will help you starting out with installing, creating templates(explains them pretty well),establishing placeholders, creating postings, and everything else that you need to know to start and continue to work in MCMS. So far this is the best starter book that I have found. I also bought the Advanced MCMS book based on the positive experience that I had with this book. ... Read more

Product Description

In Detail

Django is a high-level Python web framework that was developed by a fast-moving online-news operation to meet the stringent twin challenges of newsroom deadlines and the needs of web developers. It is designed to promote rapid development and clean, pragmatic design and lets you build high-performing, elegant web applications rapidly. Django focuses on automating as much as possible and adhering to the DRY (Don't Repeat Yourself) principle, making it easier to build high-performance web applications faster, with less code.

This book will show you how to assemble Django's features and leverage its power to design, develop, and deploy a fully-featured website. It will walk you through the creation of an example web application, with lots of code. Each chapter will add new features to the site, and show what parts of Django to work on to build these features.

This book has been specifically written for Python developers new to Django, and it's goal is to help you put together Django applications as quickly as possible. This book will give you clear, concise and, of course, practical guidance to take you from the basics of creating pages with Django through to learning the skills that will make you a Django developer to be reckoned with.

What you will learn from this book?

  • User registration and management
  • Dealing with content customization and searching
  • Working with the tag data model
  • Creating your own administration interface
  • Using AJAX to enhance the user interface
  • Building user networks
  • Setting up and deploying Django applications on the production web server

Approach

Being a beginner's guide this book has a very simple and clear approach. It is a practical guide that will help you learn the features of Django and help you build a dynamic website using those features.

Who this book is written for?

This book is for web developers who want to see how to build a complete site with Web 2.0 features, using the power of a proven and popular development system, but do not necessarily want to learn how a complete framework functions in order to do this.

Basic knowledge of Python development is required for this book, but no knowledge of Django is expected.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the greatest intro to Django
It's an okay book, they help you work through a project, but I feel the following book is better if you are just starting off with Django (I bought it today because I feel it is far better):

The Definitive Guide to Django: Web Development Done Right, Second Edition

I plan on returning to Learning Website Development with Django: A beginner's tutorial to building web applications, quickly and cleanly, with the Django application framework (From Technologies to Solutions)after I finish "The Definitive Guide to Django".

I will say that it is pretty good in setting up the sqlite database within Django.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Django Tutorial
I began searching for a great Python framework and decided that the be way to find the best framework was to try them all and see which one worked best. This lead me to read Learning Website Development with Django by Ayman Hourieh; offered by Packt Publishing.

If you are interested in learning Django, I found that this book is a GREAT place to start. It takes you from installing the framework, all the way through creatinga complete social bookmarking application. The book has a great overall pace to it; not too fast nor too slow.

A great aspect of this book was that it took you through the development of an application; from start to finish. As with starting with any new framework, it covered, in depth, the topic that I am generally most intrigued with: User Management and Registration.Django has a built in User Management and Registration system but I believe that it would have been great for the author to extend the default registration system provided.

PROS

* Easy to read
* Provides an easy introduction to Django
* Excellent coverage of Unit Testing and User Registration and Management
* Covers the usage of AJAX with Django
* Full chapter on application deployment

CONS

* Focused on development of one application
* Focuses on the basics of framework

OVERALL

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and feel that it is a fantastic introduction to Django. While it would have been great to show off another application, I feel that the book gave a complete overview of the framework and provides a great foundation and a level of understanding fo building basic applications OR reading more in-depth Django books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, even after Django 1.0
This book will basically guide you along the development of a web application that allows users to submit and share bookmarks. Unlike the online Django documentation, where snippets of code are presented to illustrate usage of particular features, this book takes you from start to finish of a complete web application. As other reviews point out, the book covers many popular features found in modern sites, including ajax, tags, pagination and rss.

The book is written based on Django 0.96 and there are a few places where the code breaks under Django 1.0.However, I didn't find debugging the code a big deal.As a matter of fact, it was a great opportunity for me to use the online Django documentation. You will eventually need to use Django's documentation anyway when you start writing your own apps.

If you don't want to debug, here are the code changes that you will need to make for the code to work with Django 1.0:

maxlength --> max_length @pp. 33, 68

form.has_errors --> form.errors @pp. 46, 52

clean_data --> cleaned_data @pp. 59, 60, 65, 73, 130

comment_form --> render_comment_form@pp. 144

don't create form.html @pp. 145

don't create posted.html@pp. 146

chapter 8: - many changes. To get admin working:
in settings.py add:
'django.contrib.admin'
in urls.py add:
from django.contrib import admin
admin.autodiscover()
(r'^comments/', include('django.contrib.comments.urls'))

This is a great book for getting started with Django. You will leave this book with a good idea of how to create very rich Django applications.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for a beginner to get something done
This book is intended for beginners, and it really works for its audience. You dive into building a social bookmarking app, adding users, tags, rss, friends, search, and more. Each of these is likely to be found (or desired) on a modern website, and the author shows the reader how to implement them... how to get things done. This book is low on theory, but high on real-world information, and it's recommended as such.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great all but last chapter
This is a great book for an intro to Django.
If you need to get up and running in Djago in 1-2 weeks and know nothing about it, this book is THE way to go. Fast-paced and not too deep, this is just what I needed.
The last chapter however leaves something to be desired. It is more like a fast-skip-along over all the things that are out there. Granted - helpful for general information, but it just does NOT work for me. After implementing my last chapter in the code - all of my application broke down. I feel that because the book skims over the topics so fast, it should not introduce advanced topics at all.

Also be aware that there are some differences between the book's trunk version of djano and the current trunk. For example there is no more clean_data, instead we use cleaned_data.

Overall, the book was just RIGHT for the me. Quick introduction to getting the web-framework up and running at the basic level. Must have first-book, for a once over read.

PS: Why, you might ask, I needed to learn Djano in 1-2 weeks? Because django is fun! Or a more realistic answer: I got tired of playing configuration games with php frameworks... ... Read more
