3-0 out of 5 stars a little bit out of date
I found this book a little bit out of date, since software described in it it has changed the book isn't very useful: And it only talks about software, not other techniques.
It doesn't explain virtual communities.
In this issue, I think the best book is Cyber safe kids, Cyber-savvy teens.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Every Parent
This book not only has a lot of great information in it to keep your kids safe, it is also a great reference guide. It points you to websites that you can go to and report cyberbullying or any other unscrupulous website.
Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Resource for Parents
"I didn't write this book to scare you. Nor did I write it to persuade you not to let your child use the Internet. The Internet benefits your child too much to warrant it being banned. I wrote this book to arm you with the knowledge and tools you can use to ensure, as much as possible, that your child has a positive Internet experience..." ~Simon Johnson

Keep Your Kids Safe on the Internet is a book dedicated to keeping your family safe from a variety of predatory elements lurking online. Everything from viruses to cyber-bullies. As an adult you have no doubt met many of these issues when you were first online and through experience you have been able to work through the chaos to get to the helpful sites and information.

Children don't have the time to deal with these issues (childhood is already stressful enough) and so parents have to protect them by putting in protective computer elements like firewalls and filtering software. Issues addressed:

What is the Internet?
How is the Internet Regulated?
What are the threats and how serious are they?
How to Avoid and Reduce the Risks...
Content-Filtering Software
Using Filtering Software to Keep Out the Junk Mail
Internet Firewall Software
Antivirus Software
Malicious Software Detection
Putting Your Defense into Place
Spyware and Adware

Lists of common acronyms and emoticons are interesting; parents can learn about blogs, viruses attached to your child's e-mail and search engine filtering. Comparisons of programs like Net Nanny and McAfee are helpful for everyone. Simon Johnson has written a very helpful book to protect your entire family against threats lurking online.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for kids!
What a wonderful book! Our children's safety should be one of our major concerns in our lives. With all of the ways a predator can get to our children, a book like this helps us stop one way they can harm our kids.It is also a good reference/source in suggestions on which software is available, how to find it and how to use it, as well as web sites to visit. Many times I have wanted a software but wasn't sure which one was the right one for me.This book helps eliminate those types of questions.I do wonder just how many parents don't know about the helpful software available or that come with the computers of today since parents are so tied to computers through work.I am 55, I have a child that is 40 and that child has a 4 year old.All three generations know and use the ways Mr. Johnson has described in this book. For those who are not computer-wise, this is a MUST HAVE book even if you don't have children.

Keep Your Kids Safe on the Internet talks of VOIP and IRC.These are two programs that I was aware of but have never explored. With this book as a guide, I would be willing to try them out.The book also talks about being careful with what information you or your child provides at Internet sites.A generation or two ago, we used a Public Library to ferret out the information. With anything and everything being so easily found on the web, the only difference between the library and the Internet is the quickness with which the information can be obtained. The same goes for cyber-bullying.I grew up with a bully bothering me and the kids of today get it on the web. Both these problems have always been with us, it is just easier with the net and something that children as well as adults need to not have in their homes.

Mr. Johnson has provided two things I will be using in the future. The first is how to view headers in Outlook.I had always been able to do it in Outlook Express but when I switched to Outlook, I was lost.He also talked about www.cybertipline.com.This site has information on Child Sexual Exploitation and how to report it.There you can also read about Amber Alerts, Megan's Law and ways you can get involved.

Windows Messenger Service not to be confused with MSN Messenger, Internet properties, pop-up blocker, five pages of Internet Chat Room Acronyms, and content advisor are a part of the short list of topics Mr. Johnson has included in this book. And the last chapters of the book talk of various types of software and how to use them such as filtering, email junk, firewalls, antivirus, malicious and windows update. For these chapters alone, "Keep Your Kids Safe.." is worth the price of $19.99 US.And don't forget to visit http://www.keepyourkidssafe.com/index.htm to read about the author and his very important reason for writing such a highly useful book.

A BookReview by Frank Dobrowolski

AND KEEP YOURSELF SAFE TOO!

While this book is aimed at the parents of young children, most of the Internet dangers and protective measures that it discusses are pertinent for all users of whatever age.In fact, the author even has implemented similar procedures for business and governmental agencies. The book has received a host of favorable reviews from publications and people worldwide.

The scope of the book is indicated by the Chapter titles:

1. What Is The Internet.?
2. What Are You Threats To Your Children And How Serious On Day.
3.How To Avoid And Reduce The Risks To Your Kids.
4. Content-Filtering Software.
5. Using Filtering Software To Keep Out The Junk Mail.
6. Internet Firewall Software.
7. Antivirus Software.
8. Malicious Software Detection.
9. Putting Your Defense Into Place.
Appendix -info on various Spyware &Adware programs

The book points out that malicious Internet efforts targeted atchildren are frighteningly common, with its web site, www.KeepYourKidsSafe.com, offering the following data:

* 1 in 5 children (5.7 million children) have received unwanted sexual solicitation in the past year.
* 20% (1-1.5 million children) were "very or extremely upset" about receiving such solicitations.
* 25% (5.4 - 6.4 million children) received "unwanted exposure to pictorial images of naked people or of people having sex".
* 71% of "unwanted exposures" occurred while the children were searching or surfing the Internet.
* 67% of the unwanted exposures happened at home.
* 80% of children between ages 7 and 18 in the USA receive inappropriate spam each day

Obviously anyone who has youngsters [including visiting grandkids] using their computer should be aware of the dangers and the protective steps available. But we all need to protect ourselves from the various intrusions and dangers of the Internet.

Some of the recommended protective steps are:

1. Avoid presenting personal information unless the site has a legitimate use for it.
2. Don't assume anyone on the Internet is truthfully identifying themselves - it is too easy to adopt an alias identity and personality
3.Don't give your password to anyone.
4. Do not respond to unsolicited e-mail (SPAM), including not activating an "Unsubscribe" option. This is used to identify valid e-mail addresses.
5. Use a nickname or alias for a screen name
6. In Chat rooms, on Message Boards and elsewhere your postings can be read by anyone who can access the site.
7. Discuss with children the dangers of the Internet
8. Don't post personal pictures on the Internet
9. The Internet is global and is *not* governed by any entity. This means that there are no limitations or checks on the information posted and accessible to Internet users.

The book has an extensive discussion on Malware - software that invades the user's privacy or attacks the computer. The variety of ways used to obtain information from our computers is almost staggering. One cannot read this book without resolving to maintain Anti-Virus, Firewall andSpyware Protection programs

There is a good presentation on ways to filter the content reaching our computers, including browser and e-mails filters - make sure to implement these protections. The book presents an extensive detailing and comparison of protection software products and filtering options inlcuding Firewall programs, Anti-Virus programs and Malicious Software protection programs. The last chapter discusses how to put these various defenses into place and keep them effective.

The Appendix includes a description of many malware programs. This a good reference when using the protection programs which usually list suspicious programs and allow the user to select whether or not to delete them.

Another interesting site covering much of this material is Are Your Children Safe from Spyware? at http://www.pcpitstop.com/spycheck/kids.asp.That site also lists Anti-spyware resources on www.pcpitsop.com .

Free eTrust EZ Antivirus Software for one year is offered with Purchase of the Book--a $29.95 USD value. However, it appears one only needs to go to the Computer Associates website,www.ca.com/freeav,to get the free download

This book is available through the Bergen County Library system, www.bccls.org.
It also is available at Ridgewood's Bookends at the List Price of $19.99 and
at Amazon.com for$ 13.59 plus S/H - waived for orders over $25.

We have the full kit (DVD, Workbook and Booklet), but this had been a "go-to" for questions. As I use this in the community, many of the parents that I meet have questions about Internet dangers, and this is a great resource. It is full of information like how to talk with your kids about pornography or predators or being safe on social networking sites. It has a fill-in-the-blank section for you if you buy with the DVD.The last half of the book also has everything you need to know about parental controls, other Internet safety resources, chat acronyms, monitoring software, filtering software etc.It also has some great, compelling stories that are taken from the DVD series, and could be great stories to share with an age-appropriate son or daughter. ... Product Description
The Internet socializes people in new ways, encouraging the developmentof innovative approaches to communication and online identity. As newtechnology and media emerge, cyber behaviors will continue to affectus, our relationships, our communities, and the world, both on- andoffline.Timeless issues such as depression, fear, loneliness, addiction, and sexuality so visible in our everyday lives are being transferred and transformed online. How do today’s therapists, parents, and educators negotiate the online and wireless world? We can't assume that traditional theories of human development, learning, and psychology can just be uploaded to cyber space and still be useful. This is especially true when it comes to children and adolescents. They personify what makes the Internet so exciting and confusing:it is young, constantly changing, pushing boundaries, and rejecting the status quo.

Cyber Rules is a practical and comprehensive look at how the Internet is changing us. Making sense of the social, psychological, and global impact of the Internet and its associated technology and media can be overwhelming. Joanie Farley Gillispie and Jayne Gackenbach show you how to make sense of it for yourself and those you love. Filled with sound research, personal stories, creative exercises, and advice, Cyber Rules is one way to get it about the Internet.

Gillispie and Gackenbach begin the book by discussing how Internet communication affects identity. The Internet presents a broad range of new definitions that challenge traditional ways of thinking about how we see ourselves. Chat lines, discussion boards, and role-playing games present opportunities to try on alternate selves and craft a personality (or many different personas). What does all this mean in terms of identity formation and development, especially in regards to children? The Internet facilitates both connection and disconnection, increased attention and impulsivity. How children are actually using media is explained, along with effective discipline methods as it relates to children’s media use.

Next, the authors take the reader into the world of online relationships. The unique characteristics and challenges of finding love and establishing relationships online are presented. Cyber sex is considered as both a purely online phenomenon, and as an extension of offline sexuality, particularly in relation to adolescents and their developing sexuality. Video games, which facilitate a new kind of online relationships among gamers, are examined. The authors also explore health online, focusing on how to find the most accurate health information online and appropriate psychological treatment in cyberspace.

Cyber Rules is intended for use by clinicians, educators, and parents, as all three of these groups grapple with cyber issues. It is packed with practical advice, as well as quizzes and exercises that let the reader absorb and apply what has been learned. Readers are encouraged to solve the cyber problems presented in clinical vignettes by imagining themselves as the clinician, educator, or parent who must decide whether the cyber behavior under discussion is healthy, and why. Questionnaires assess knowledge and measure use patterns, while personal stories offer examples of real-life applications of the theoretical issues discussed. Interactive exercises require the reader to conceptualize ways to organize thinking about what’s happening online, while testing knowledge of and challenging assumptions about cyber space.

For those who want and need to understand the power of today’s Internet culture, Cyber Rules is essential reading. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars How the Internet is Affecting Teenagers
Cyber Rules is not a book of rules about the internet, instead it is a revelation of what is really going on online. The information is mostly about what teenagers are doing online although there is plenty of information about how the internet is affecting adults too.

I found the chapter on internet identities intriguing. I've had the experience of men pretending to be women to get me to talk to them. I could hear a male voice in my head when I read their e-mails and later they confessed that they were actually male. The authors do make a point about how your real self can emerge online. An introvert can appear to be an extrovert online. This type of information could be helpful to parents as they monitor their child's online interactions. Some of the information in this book could help parents prevent their children from becoming victims of online predators.

This book also reveals the realities of compulsive game playing, internet addictions, virtual pets, inappropriate use of cell phones (the things teenagers text to each other), online gaming and depression. Throughout the book there are real-life stories of experiences online.

While there is plenty of information about what is occurring in the life of the modern teenager, I didn't find much information on how parents should talk to their teens about dangers. The parent is merely warned that they should think carefully about what they want to say to their teenagers about their online interactions. Putting the family computer in the living room vs. bedroom is advised. I can recommend this book to parents, educators and psychologists who are interacting with internet-savvy teenagers.

It sounds technical but in fact makes for easy reading, comes from a private practitioner who also teaches courses in health psychology and case management, and is packed with personal stories and advice on Internet management and interactions. REVIEW: Safety Net: Protecting Your Business on the Internet

Rebecca Sanderman
M2 BEST BOOKS-(C)2000-2002 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

Security for Internet business is a big deal... a complex and confusing big deal at that. From reading 'Safety Net' it is my belief that Kathleen Sindell grasped that and tackled it head on when writing this book. The blurb announces that it "...is written in accessible, nontechnical language to provide you with practical solutions to your most pressing concerns..." but sometimes blurbs can lie! Happily in this case it doesn't and as soon as you commence reading you realise this.

You are taken through what seems to be every element of Internet security from vulnerable web servers to how to handle public relations after you've been breached and this is all done in a very logical way. The first section addresses exactly what the book is about, who it is aimed at, how it is organised and how to use it, with the rest of the book following on in the same logical order.

I found that throughout the whole book the tone in which it is written is both encouraging yet reassuring without being patronising. This, like the nontechnical language, is evident from the very start, "...If you cannot find the topic, look it up in the glossary. You may discover that it is included in the book but is referred to in a way you did not anticipate...Information security is a complex field: Don't feel bad if you have to use the table of contents, index and glossary frequently...", so you are reassured that on first glance you may not find what you are looking for, but there are plenty of resources to help you find it. Fortunately the suggestion to use the referencing tools is backed up by high quality indexes and glossaries so the reader should have no problem finding that obscure piece of information.

'Safety Net's' straightforward, logical and honest approach really did make a difference to my reading and understanding of the intricacies of e-business security. Having read books on the same subject before and been completely baffled by them I was a little wary when presented with this one. However Sindell certainly knows how to make something which is potentially very confusing easily understandable.

CONCLUSION: The clarity of concepts, abundance of resources and jargon-free language really do make me recommend this book to anyone who requires in-depth, yet understandable information concerning Internet security issues.

Product Description
Are you worried about your security when you go online? Do you panic at the thought of your kids on the internet? Have you always wanted to buy items online but were afraid that you would get your information stolen? Do you worry about computer hackers?

You are not alone. Most people, including myself, worried when the internet was first introduced to us. Even today, there are many people who are afraid of the internet and the idea of "letting strangers into their home." This prevents them from enjoying the technology that the internet has to offer.

Education is the key when it comes to anything that you are worried about. You are better off to face your fears and learn as much as possible about a topic than just to avoid it. Especially when the topic is something that is very much a part of our every day lives. Did you know, for example, that many companies require employees to apply for jobs online? That most jobs are now offered online?

You do not have to live your life afraid of the internet. Nor do you have to worry that each time you use your computer you are opening up your home to predators. When you learn about cyber security and how you can have internet safety, you will feel empowered. No longer will you be afraid of using the computer, instead, you will embrace it!

The Best Advice From Someone Who's Been There!...

I'm like you. I first got a computer in the 1990s and was afraid yet awed by the internet. I was the victim of identity theft and cyber crimes. Friends of mine also were approached by con artists and scammers. But I found a way to feel safe online. I decided to learn from my own mistakes and also investigate how I could be safer on my own. The best advice you can get is from someone who has been there and done that. That is why I decided to write...

While other books tell you about software or highly technological processes with regard to cyber security, this no-nonsense book gives you insight from a person who has been down the road and back when it comes to the internet. Despite having problems in the past, I now work online and do all of my banking, bill paying and shopping online.

I like the convenience and have never run into any trouble. That is because I know all about cyber security and how to protect not only myself, but my loved ones and friends online.

Tried And Proven Safety Methods!

1.) Learn how to keep your kids and yourself safe!

The most important aspect of internet safety is to keep you and your family safe when online. This book teaches you how to be safe online by giving you real life examples, including several incidents that I actually went through. You get step by step instructions on how to protect your children and yourself when you are online.

2.) Learn how to keep your finances safe online!

In addition to teaching you how to keep your family and yourself online, you can also learn how to use the internet to shop, pay bills, and even do your banking without worrying that you are going to end up having your finances compromised. You can learn to shop and bank with ease and peace of mind when you take the tips in this book.

Discover The Strategies To Protecting Your Internet Security!

4-0 out of 5 stars straightforward lessons about the Internet
The book targets the primary school student, mostly in grades 4-7. Its pedagogy is to walk through a series of short activities, that suggest safe Internet usage. Each activity is kept quite short. Reflecting a possible limited attention span by the student. Thus, an activity is described in just a few paragraphs. Doing all the lessons/activities should be only a few hours for the diligent reader.

The tasks vary interestingly. Possibly jarringly to some students. One early task is to colour in some pictures. For the average student, this is at the most at the level of grade 4. Frankly, many readers within grades 4-7 will have left this behind. Later tasks in the book are more suited to this age range. But those early activities are potentially offputting. This is not an idle esthetic point I'm making. A student of any age does not like to be perceived as doing lessons better suited for younger students. A self esteem issue familiar to many teachers. Yes, the book tries to go from simple lessons about the Internet to more complex ones. However, the nature of the first lessons is perhaps not optimal. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Internet Safety 101 Program
I have reviewed all of the materials contained in Enough is Enough's Internet Safety 101 program. The program is by far the best of breed teaching platform to educate parents, grandparents, teachers, librarians, law enforcement officers and other adult guardians in exactly how to protect children from the dangers lurking on the Internet. These dangers include: pornography, pedophilia, sexting and cyberbullying, to name just a few. The teaching series also informs adults how to protect their kids, no matter what venue the children are operating in - desk top computer, laptop computer, mobile device (cellphone) or gaming device. I highly recommend this product to all adults that care about protecting kids online!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, comprehensive resource!
We have had a deeply felt need in our community for a resource to protect our children from all of the dangers online.I have mentored teens and worked with parents for a number of years, and while the Internet has so many good things, those that I work with have been impacted by the dangers. This resource is very comprehensive.I loved that it covered the dangers of pornography, predators and those dangers that many of the parents I work with never knew about with respect to online games and social networking. We also have seen many cases of cyberbullying. This resource includes information about how to use the DVD individually, with a group or for a whole presentation.By watching the DVD and going through the workbook, I felt like I had the information I needed to better protect the children I work with.I also have given the Booklets out to parents in need. This is really a wonderful resource that will not only educate you, but will also help you educate others. It can be used again and again with any group--all I had to do was have a laptop or DVD player in hand. And everyone has loved the teaching--it is very compelling information. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great educational DVD on Internet Safety and quick help booklet
We have the full kit, which includes the DVD and Booklet, but which also has the workbook, but for anyone, these two items are great. The DVD is comprehensive, and provides compelling information on pornography, sexual predators, cyberbullies, and keeping kids safe on things like their cell phones or online gaming devices. The film has amazing testimony from victims, survivors and experts. If you watch it, just get ready to have the kleenex on hand! Some of the stories are heartbreaking, but in the end, as a viewer, those of my friends who have watched it have felt like they know how to help their kids enjoy the many good things about the Internet while protecting them from the dangers. The booklet includes their safety checklist, and a lot of great safety information. It's easy to refer back to, and has things like an example youth Internet safety contract, chat acronyms, monitoring software and other protective software and their safety recommendations. ...
