Product Description
This up-to-date and comprehensive electronic book on CD-ROM presents an authoritative library of documents and publications covering all aspects of identity theft – federal information on financial and cyber security, on-line safety, internet scams, web and email phishing, and credit reports, with material from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and other federal agencies. The FTC reports:Identity theft is a serious crime. People whose identities have been stolen can spend months or years – and thousands of dollars – cleaning up the mess the thieves have made of a good name and credit record. In the meantime, victims of identity theft may lose job opportunities, be refused loans for education, housing, or cars, and even get arrested for crimes they didn’t commit. Humiliation, anger, and frustration are among the feelings victims experience as they navigate the process of rescuing their identity. How Identity Theft Occurs - Despite your best efforts to manage the flow of your personal information or to keep it to yourself, skilled identity thieves may use a variety of methods to gain access to your data. How Identity Thieves Get Your Personal Information: They get information from businesses or other institutions by: stealing records or information while they’re on the job; bribing an employee who has access to these records; hacking these records; conning information out of employees; they may steal your mail, including bank and credit card statements, credit card offers, new checks, and tax information; they may rummage through your trash, the trash of businesses, or public trash dumps in a practice known as “dumpster diving.” They may get your credit reports by abusing their employer’s authorized access to them, or by posing as a landlord, employer, or someone else who may have a legal right to access your report. They may steal your credit or debit card numbers by capturing the information in a data storage device in a practice known as “skimming.” They may swipe your card for an actual purchase, or attach the device to an ATM machine where you may enter or swipe your card. They may steal your wallet or purse. They may steal personal information they find in your home. They may steal personal information from you through email or phone by posing as legitimate companies and claiming that you have a problem with your account. This practice is known as “phishing” online, or “pretexting” by phone. How Identity Thieves Use Your Personal Information: They may call your credit card issuer to change the billing address on your credit card account. The imposter then runs up charges on your account. Because your bills are being sent to a different address, it may be some time before you realize there’s a problem. They may open new credit card accounts in your name. When they use the credit cards and don’t pay the bills, the delinquent accounts are reported on your credit report. They may establish phone or wireless service in your name. They may open a bank account in your name and write bad checks on that account. They may counterfeit checks or credit or debit cards, or authorize electronic transfers in your name, and drain your bank account. They may file for bankruptcy under your name to avoid paying debts they’ve incurred under your name, or to avoid eviction. They may buy a car by taking out an auto loan in your name. They may get identification such as a driver’s license issued with their picture, in your name.Topics covered include:How Identity Theft Occurs - If Your Personal Information Has Been Lost or Stolen; ID THEFT Victims: Immediate Steps - Placing Fraud Alerts on Your Credit Report; Closing Accounts; Filing a Complaint with the Federal Trade Commission; The Identity Theft Report; Tips For Organizing Your Case; Chart Your Course of Action - Resolving Specific Problems - Bank Accounts and Fraudulent Withdrawals; Bankruptcy Fraud; Correcting Fraudulent Information in Credit Reports; Credit Cards; Crimin ... 4-0 out of 5 stars has no technical solution for phishing
The CD has many useful tips on guarding against online scams. With some 18000 pages of advice, it offers good value. Especially when you consider its price against various electronic papers offered for sale on Amazon by consulting firms on this subject. Some of those papers are going for hundreds of dollars! Ignore them and look at this US government compendium.

Interested readers should also note that the advice given about detecting phishing is for manual scrutiny of a suspected phishing email. No technical solution is offered by the government, circa late 2005, when this CD was made. ... Read more

Product Description
Has this happened to you? Picture this. You are rounding up your family for the evening meal and repeated calls to your daughter have fallen on deaf ears.

Off you go to her room to give her a not to pleasant personal message to wash up for the evening meal.Because you are the type of parent who wants to instill a certain modicum of privacy you rap on her closed door.No response.Food is getting cold and after rapping again you open the door.

It’s immediately evident why Cathy couldn’t hear your calls or your knock. With her back to you the headphones almost appear to be permanently imbedded on her head.

As you walk up behind her to give her a tap your eyes are drawn to the monitor she is so enthralled with.Choking back a cry of horror you can’t believe what you are seeing that has her so mesmerized.

Here sits your beautiful pre-teen daughter. The same little girl you have nursed through diapers, potty training, mumps and every other childhood benchmark.

She’s had the talk about not speaking to strangers. She knows not to open the door to strangers if you aren’t home. She would never get into a car with someone without your permission. She’s had the drill about not letting anyone touch her inappropriately.

In short, you have done everything imaginable to keep her safe from harm – until now.

Your baby has an image on her monitor that you can’t even begin to describe. She is watching a live feed from a vile monster who has convinced her that it’s okay for him to show her different parts of his anatomy live and in graphic detail.

We are going to end our narrative here.Hopefully, Cathy’s parents have discovered this early enough to end it without too much damage to their little girl.

Has this ever happened to you?Does your child have his or her own computer? Is that computer in his/her own room?Have you done everything possible to insure that you don’t have a repeat of the scene above?

The Internet has revolutionized how we learn about the world. The possibilities for education and fun are endless.Unlike ourselves, our children are no longer constrained to the 12 or 24 volume encyclopedias we were provided. The world is virtually at their fingertips and we should do everything we can to encourage their exploration.

Unfortunately, it’s a sad testimony to the times we live in that such a wonderful tool is also a very dangerous weapon. And, there are thousands of unsavory predators lurking in the shadows just waiting for an opportunity to strike.

The odds are very high that even if you think you’ve taken every precaution you’ve not done enough.Whether you think you have all the bases covered you still need your own arsenal of tools.

One of these tools is your own copy of “Internet Safety For Your Kids.”What can this guide do for you and your family?Well, take a look:

Catch 22 – explore how the internet is at odds with education vs. terror
What Are Some of the Dangers – taking a serious look at all the dangers online like pedophiles, theft and pornography
Should You Violate Your Child's Privacy? – a discussion on the pros and cons
Phishing and Your Child – how this applies to your family
What Kind of eMail Is Coming to Your child? – learn how to monitor family email accounts
About Firewalls and Free Software – when free isn’t really free!
About Abduction – these worse case scenarios are playing out every day across the Internet
What About International Abduction? – this is a double-edged sword
Know Who Your Kids Are Online With – follow up and check them out
Know Who You Should Contact – who do you notify if you find a predator
Chat rooms, Social Sites and Your Child – learn what goes on in chat rooms
Case Studies – learn about what is happening to insure it doesn’t happen to you

And Much More!

Product Description
Parents today have a lot to be concerned about. To add to this list is the worry of what their children are doing on the Internet. This book highlights some of the problems, risks and dangers on the Internet. It is not written with the aim of worrying parents, but to help them communicate better with their children on Internet safety issues. It is possible that our Net-savvy children may have more knowledge, but they may lack wisdom regarding the use of what they have learned. They may have more experience, but lack the maturity and discernment to make good decisions. So, parents continue to play an important role in their children's upbringing. But this is not an easy role. What parents learned from their parents about parenting no longer applies in this digital era.The authors hope that as parents become better acquainted with such issues as protection of privacy, Internet pornography, chat rooms, cybersex and sexual predators, and digital gaming and addiction, they can better converse and discuss these issues with their children. This way, they can not only offer guidance, but learn from their children. What Do I Say to My Net-Savvy Kids? Internet Safety Issues for Parents begins by arguing that there is a need to be concerned and that our children cen be vulnerable. ... Read more

Excerpt: Parental controls provide parents with automated tools to help protect their children and set restrictions while using devices and services. These controls may include: alerting a parent when their child's device leaves school, limiting their car speed to a certain maximum speed, controlling the content which the child views on a device connected to the Internet, or limiting the amount of time they can use their device. Parental controls are optional features typically included in digital television services, computer and video games, Mobile phones and computer software. Parental controls fall into roughly four categories, content filters, which limit access to age-appropriate content, usage controls, which constrain the usage of these devices such as placing time-limits on usage or forbidding certain types of usage, computer usage management tools, which allow parents to enforce learning time into child computing time, and monitoring , which can track location and activity when using the devices. Content filters were the first popular type of parental controls to limit access to Internet content. Also television stations began introducing V-Chip technology to limit access to television content. Controls are now being applied to all manner of new content ranging from explicit songs to objectionable movies available for purchase online. Usage controls are increasing in sophistication; examples include - turning devices off during specific times of day; Ford has introduced a feature to limit the volume of the music playing in the car, and with GPS technology becoming affordable, it is now possibl...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1331235 ... From the supplier: The Internet is an increasingly powerful educational resource but it contains materials that are not appropriate for young students. Educators can protect young people by implementing Internet content management. The first step is to set an Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) that will define how students can use the Internet in schools. To monitor compliance, it is important to use Internet filtering software. In choosing the appropriate filtering software, schools have to make sure the tool is flexible enough to meet the AUP. One such tool is SurfWatch Software's Educational Edition.
