Dewey's story starts in the worst possible way. Only a few weeks old, on the coldest night of the year, he was stuffed into the returned book slot at the Spencer Public Library. He was found the next morning by library director Vicki Myron, a single mother who had survived the loss of her family farm, a breast cancer scare, and an alcoholic husband. Dewey won her heart, and the hearts of the staff, by pulling himself up and hobbling on frostbitten feet to nudge each of them in a gesture of thanks and love. For the next nineteen years, he never stopped charming the people of Spencer with his enthusiasm, warmth, humility (for a cat), and, above all, his sixth sense about who needed him most.

Dramatic kitty rescue
Nice story, but, for me, the author's ego got in the way of the story. However, as all of the cats that my husband and I have adopted have been rescues, this struck a very important chord for me.We'd adopt Dewey any time!

Both sweet and compelling (Possible Spoiler)
I have read both Dewey books and enjoyed them both.I know many on here have criticized Vicki Myron for writing so much about her own life but I loved that part of it.It helped me understand why Dewey meant so much to her. I could relate,as the daughter of a single mother, to what she went through.Financially times were not as hard for us but having a parent who wasn't all that interested in being a parent, like Vicki's ex-husband, my mother and I have always been close.She also remarried late in life after 20+ years of being single.I also related to her love for Dewey.I had a cat for nearly 16 years who meant as much to me.I lost him in 2009.I thought Vicke's writing was poignant and hearfelt. I was not expecting the writing to be prolific or fancy, it was simple and real.I laughed at some of the things Dewey did and teared up at how he touched people.I enjoyed the parts about Spencer, a wonderful small town, obviously loved by it's people.I hope Vicki Myron has found happiness with her new cat, Page Turner, who reminds me of my new cat Max, and her new man, Glenn.

What greater gift than the love of a cat?
I just finished the book and I am not ashamed to tell you my eyes are wet. I understand some people just want to read about Dewey but nothing else. I do understand how Dewey had reminded people of changes. Dewey offered his unconditional love everyday. Everyone was happy with Dewey and it could be a perfect ending of a fairy tale. Things change and people get old. Dewey got old and passed away. My beloved cat recently just died. He had given me so much.
The book is about love, changes and life. Life goes on with or without you. However, pay attention to every kindness in the world.
I hope the story of Dewey will make people realize how important it is to treat our pets right. They are family. They are not disposable just because you have to move or just had a baby.

Cats are loveable

Having had a cat called 'Dewey back in the 1980' in New Zealand I was intrigued to read this book.It is a delighful story and if you dont like cats, after reading this book, You Will.
Our Dewey was one of four kittens that we got from a friend, they were all pure white with blue eyes. Each kittenwas for each of our four children.
The kittens werecalled Liley,Louie,Dewey and Monty.
We loved them and enjoyed them very much.
Cats are a good and faithful friend.

What a great true story to read, especially for the cat lover in you. It also makes a great gift for that someone you don't know what to buy for. It has a great story that grabs you right from the first page.
Dewey is well worth the money. You won't want to give this book away.
