Product Description
With fond reminiscences and nostalgic cartoons, Bob Artley takes readers back to his little country schoolhouse, Marion No. 7, in Iowa’s Franklin County. Readers will share farm boy Artley’s first-day agonies, the long walks to and from school, the school yard games, the Christmas program, and the annual picnicâ€"all recalled with his characteristic humor and insight.

Everything that Artley experiencedâ€"from the smell of scorched mittens left too long on the stove to dry to the excitement of performing in the school programâ€"is recalled here with delightful details, providing life lessons and delightful, warm memories.

Artley is considered one of the country’s foremost recorders of farm history. His wonderful artwork and stories reflect his sense of country nostalgia and farm heritage and speak to anyone with a farming background and to those who yearn for simpler times. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars just another review
For all people who want to inform themselves about socialism and communism in very abstract way. Personally I prefer to treat an issue in a realistic way, and I think the oppinions and feelings of the situations that Orwell describes would better be understood if he had used human characters.

FINE

3-0 out of 5 stars not too bad
I have had to read this book for the English class and I must say that it is not bad. For me it was not easy to understand and so I was tired to read it. But I think that it was a good choice to read this book in class because you can learn much about the Revolution in Russia but also a lot about tyranny.

5-0 out of 5 stars A duty toward vegetariansm
I expected a more "animal rights" version of why we should all be vegetarians. In fact, this is a very balanced explanation of how we *used to* take better care of our farm animals == they were practicallyunder the same roof as us;there was an unwritten contract between us andthe animals, that if we took care of them, they would "take care ofus."but now that "animal husbandry" has become"animal science" -- and animals are no longer under our roof, this "contract" is no longer a fair contract: there is benefitfor only the human and not the animal.

Bernard Rollin gives both themeat eater and the vegetarian a lot to think about with this book. I highlyrecommend it for all. ... Read more

Product Description
This narrative history of nursing education is a case study of a single institution set within the context of trends in the nursing profession, nursing education, and health care practices in the Midwest and the United States. The detailed research and analysis in this work make a fundamental contribution not only to the history of nursing but also to the broader history of women's work, the history of women in higher education, and the history of the health care professions.
The Midwestern focus of Complete in All Its Parts and its emphasis on the post-World War II emergence of the University of Iowa College of Nursing provide a fresh perspective on the education of nurses, especially the education of nurses within a major teaching-research university. In doing so, this book pushes nursing historiography beyond the profession's early development, details the struggles involved in establishing nursing as a legitimate academic endeavor in the university environment, and provides groundwork for a comparison with other such institutions across the nation.
Its core audience includes health care professionals and educators as well as institutional historians, perhaps especially those involved in the history of American health care institutions.
Lee Anderson and Kathy Penningroth are partners in A & P Historical Resources of Coralville, Iowa.

Product Description

When we think about school principals, most of us imagine a figure of vague, yet intimidating authority—for an elementary school student, being sent to the principal’s office is roughly on par with a trip to Orwell’s Room 101. But with School Principal, Dan C. Lortie aims to change that. Much as he did for teachers with his groundbreaking book Schoolteacher, Lortie offers here an intensive and detailed look at principals, painting a compelling portrait of what they do, how they do it, and why.

Lortie begins with a brief history of the job before turning to the daily work of a principal. These men and women, he finds, stand at the center of a constellation of competing interests around and within the school. School district officials, teachers, parents, and students all have needs and demands that frequently clash, and it is the principal’s job to manage these conflicting expectations to best serve the public. Unsurprisingly then, Lortie records his subjects’ professional dissatisfactions, but he also vividly depicts the pleasures of their work and the pride they take in their accomplishments. Finally, School Principal offers a glimpse of the future with an analysis of current issues and trends in education, including the increasing presence of women in the role and the effects of widespread testing mandated by the government.

Lortie’s scope is both broad and deep, offering an eminently useful range of perspectives on his subject. From the day-to-day toil to the long-term course of an entire career, from finding out just what goes on inside that office to mapping out the larger social and organizational context of the job, School Principal is a truly comprehensive account of a little-understood profession.

Product Description

Learning by Heart brings together a unique and diversecollection of poems about the experience of school as seen through theeyes of America's best contemporary poets. These poets capture theeducational process not only in the classroom but as it takes place inlibraries and hallways, on playing fields and at dances. Alternatelyjoyous and defiant, they demonstrate how it is that young people come tofind their place in the world.

Most of the poems in this anthology were written between 1970and 1995, a period that encompasses both the halcyon years ofpoets-in-the-schools programs and the primary and secondary school yearsof many of the poets included. Their poems define school in that mostcontemporary sense — “with a multitude of voices”—reflectingperspectives from African American, Hispanic American, Asian American, and Native American as well as Anglo American backgrounds, from bothpublic and private schools in rural and urban environments.

Learning by Heart offers a profound and timelystatement about schools and learning as well as the role of art ineducation. Finally, these poems validate that most important lesson:even the most common of experiences is worthy of creative expression.

5-0 out of 5 stars School.
School continues to be one of the most traumatizing/wonderful experiences of my life. This book talks about school from all angles .. highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for everyone who's ever been to school
This collection includes some of the best poems of our time--all related to school. The pain and poignancy of school-age experiences in the classroom, on the playground, or on the athletic field, are captured inthis volume with the resonance of shared life. The names of teachers--Mrs.Krikorian, Mrs. Smythe, and the rest--bring back our own teachers' facesand even their "sausage arms." Teachers themselves speak here aswell, with humor, sadness, or a sense of loss about the classrooms ofchildren they have known. This volume, with work by our best contemporarypoets, is a must-read for anyone who teaches or learns or who has ever beenin school. ... Read more

He presently fights for Adrenaline MMA (previously known as M-1 Global). Sylvia joined a karate school as a child, and began wrestling in high school. After graduation, he worked construction, community gardening, hanging sheet rock, a bouncer for Shane Reids bar, and painting houses. He was playing semi-pro football when he became interested in MMA, and began to train with Marcus Davis. During this time he decided to take up boxing and grappling, and after training for a year, Sylvia entered his first grappling contest, taking first place in his division. Soon after, he got the opportunity to fight in a Rhode Island no-holds-barred amateur event, in which he knocked out his opponent in 17 seconds. A long time UFC fan, Sylvia and some friends attended UFC 28 in Atlantic City, New Jersey in 2000. In late 2000 Sylvia sold all of his belongings and moved to Bettendorf, Iowa, to train with Team Miletich. On April 22, 2010, Tim Sylvia was awarded a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under Pedro Silveira. Sylvia made his professional MMA debut in 2001 fighting for the IFC. He went on to rack up thirteen consecutive wins with ten knockouts in organizations such as SuperBrawl, and Extreme Challenge.
