Way, WAY Out of Date
First off, this book feels like just another churned-out book in a series, and it turns out that's exactly what it is.That wouldn't be so bad, but the Culture Shock! books are intentionally banal so as to stay away from any hint of controversy.

Although 12 years may not seem like a lot of time (published 1992), it is almost 1/4 of modern Israel's history, so almost by definition this book is outdated.Imagine trying to read a book about the USA from the 1940s and having it be relevant today.That's kind of how it feels.

Practically a waste of money
I lived in Israel from 1995-2000 and bought this book just before going over. I thought it might be good to buy the book anyway.Sadly upon getting to Israel in 95 I found much of the information was very out of date and was not much help at all in the "klita" (integration into society) process.There were many things that book left out that would be "olim" should know, but recruiters will not tell you or will whitewash when asked about.As for the great & powerful Israeli army, theymay have had a lot of respect at one time, (i.e. the 1950s - 80s)but it seemed popularity was dying (in the years I was there), especially when you think of Israeli politics, religious fanaticism and the territories.Now it has even lost more of it's prestige.There are many other things in this book that could be challenged, but it would take up too much room on this review. I would tell would be buyers not to bother.Standard travel guides, and talking to friends already there helped more than the book did. Many things one will find out on one's one, whether one wants to or not.

I'm ready to move to Israel.
This is the coolest travel book I've ever read! After reading it, I wanted to start packing my furniture and things (3 months early). Mr Winter shows you the vast differences between the Israeli and Western way of life, yetin such a manner thatyou already feel like you belong there.

Cultural Israel
Though many travel to Israel and it is very Westernized, it is good to remember that there is a Religion and cultural base that is not taken lightly.
The source of good information to be followed.

Good introduction to basic Israeli culture
This book gives a good brief introduction to the history, sights and people of Israel, though it is not extremely detailed or thorough.This is certainly sufficient if you are going for a business trip (the focus of the book) or a short vacation.As the book states, there are only a few good general rules since the population in Israel comes from very diverse backgrounds - in general you will have to watch and see!

The book starts with a brief history and then a discussion of the various major political and religious groups.A section of Jewish holidays is also provided, though there are some major customs that are left out (such as the bonfires on Lab b'Omer).

As a bonus, you get a mini-guide book in a few pages.It mentions the major cities and the prevalent attitudes of each.While some major festivals are given, approximate dates are not provided.If you are interested in sight-seeing, get a good travel guide book as well.

The book does discuss what to do if you are invited to dinner (or any other meal), what to generally expect in transportation, what to wear (for business), daily routines and family life, cultural values and how Israelis consider friendships.This book is certainly not exhaustive or all-inclusive, but will give you general ideas about how many people behave.

The section on security was rather small (one page) considering the importance in daily life in Israel.From an American perspective, some insight into how screening is done (i.e. you may have to open your car trunk before entering certain places) would have been a helpful addition for those who wouldn't expect it.The book suggests following all instructions given, which is a good general rule even if you have other expectations.

Though it is nice that the book is fairly small, it would have been better to add a few more pages to give just a bit more detail.I've mentioned a few missed points above, but in addition there are no instructions for dealing with police (not that this is a likely event), helpful tips such that you usually must flag down a bus from a stop, negotiation techniques in markets, e-mail etiquette or even how the banking system works (since there is a definite business focus in the book).There is also a small addition that needs to be made - on Page 11, it should be noted that you will typically find the two-round-pronged European-style plug, not a three-pronged angled plug.

For the price, this book is a good way to gain some ideas of the cultural and political attitudes in Israel in a short amount of time. If you are a procrastinator, you certainly can read the entire book on the plane!

An excellent book on Israel/Palestine
rather than focus oh names & dates and the usual fare, this book is a great resource on Israel/Palestine and gives you information hard to find elsewhere, whether it is an analysis of Joe Sacco's artwork, Palestinian films, or a look back in time to the old city of Jerusalem pre-Brittish mandate. A must read!

A terrifically thought-provoking collection of essays!
Thisbook contains some of the very best scholarship currently available on the cultural politics of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Carol Bardenstein's essay on the implications of cross-casting and "passing" in Israeli and Palestinian films alone is worth the price of admission!

Disgusting
Sure, there's plenty of fascinating material on Levantine popular culture in this book.But I think that too much of it is simply a disgusting paean to racist attacks on human rights, with sneering taunts directed at any attempts by Israelis to protect their rights.

Yes, there are discussions of Israelis being thrilled by the prospect of finally being allowed to visit nearby Petra, on the Jordanian side of the border.And there is even an admission that it is "preposterous" for an Egyptian video to imply that European Jews "deserved to suffer genocide" and that Arab suffering is the result "of Jewish existence."

Yes, there's quite a bit of material that a scholar could find useful.And there has to be a place even for books that support racism and attack human rights.But the place for my copy of this one is my trash can. ... Read more

Book Review for The Culture of Military Innovation

This meticulously researched volume presents a rigorous case study in comparative strategic cultures and the revolution of military affairs (RMA). It addresses two central questions:first-- what explains how military innovations, based on similar technologies, develop in different nation states?Secondly--how does a "new theory of victory" originate in different cultural settings?It compares and contrasts the cultures of the United States, Israel, and Russia and how they have approached and interpreted the changing nature of warfare.According to the author, the most recent roots of RMA can be traced to the mid 1970s when standoff precision-guided munitions (PGM) were introduced. The Russians were the first to recognize that PGMs would radically change modern warfare and constitute a fundamental discontinuity which they called the military-technical revolution (MTR).RMA and MTR are terms describing "radical military innovation that render existing doctrine and forms of combat obsolete."
Mr. Adamsky contends that the cognitive art of each national culture dominates and conditions the manner in which their militaries integrate strategy, doctrine, operational concepts, organization, and new weapons technology.
The author argues that the American way of war has relied on material superiority, massive firepower, and advanced technologies over a fighting style focused on an intellectual approach of creative maneuvering and strategic innovation. This evolved from an American cognitive style that is inductive, logical-analytical, and centered on the object being independent from the context in which it is embedded.
The Israeli way of war was founded on a siege mentality, the quest for absolute security, the ability to improvise, and tactical offensive excellence. The Israeli's viewed heroism, combat experience, and leadership as the essence of military art rather than theoretical knowledge or formal education. This resulted in a weak institutional commitment to the areas of military theory and doctrine. They developed and procured new weaponry but treated it as a force multiplier for their current concept of operations rather than something that could change the existing military architecture. Israeli cognitive style is based on a pragmatic, problem-solving approach in which doing comes before understanding.
According to the author, the Russian way of war was based on the notion that battles are won by men and not machines. Technology was considered lifeless if divorced from human and operational factors. As a result, the requirements for weapons were based on doctrine and operational concepts and not the newest technology. Their approach was institutionalized by selecting the best and brightest officers for their general staff.These officers were extensively trained and were expected to have encyclopedic military knowledge. In this intellectual atmosphere, the Russians developed futuristic strategies and creative theories regarding the nature, conduct, and future of warfare.They did, however, lack the material capacity to put their theories into effect on the battlefield. The Russian cognitive style was oriented toward "holistic-dialectical" thinking.Understanding an issue and the unifying principles that underlay all its interacting systems was more important than doing.
This volume has a highly academic and uneven literary flow, an annoying redundancy of key ideas, and seventy-seven pages of detailed notes. Regardless, its originality, the extensive use of primary sources, and the critical thought-processes employed, make it an ideal reference for military strategists, students of security studies, scholars, and those interested in applying cultural models to organizational behavior.

The Holy Land
In my opinion, I think Israel is a great country to learn about while having several reasons in mind that include that Jewish people make up about 80% and Arab people (quite a number being Palestinian as well as other Arabs)numbering about 20% of the population, including all the different cities in this area include Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Eilat, Acre, Haifa, and Nazareth.

Excellent Book
This is a perfect book to help you understand and appreciate Israel's rich heritage. It is an extremely well-written and highly grounded country guide, that provides the reader the opportunity to become immediately versed in the country's diverse past history, present situation and culture. I found it to be a thorough and up-to-date guide which is both educational and entertaining. A very useful timeline is included. The book is illustrated, throughout, with excellent color photographs and maps. The material is presented without bias, which makes for a wonderful read.

Great Book!
This is a beautifully photographed and contemporary book that is a wonderful overview of Israel for readers 9-12. Provides a responsible and authentic coverage of the countries history and government, environment and economy and lifestyle. Particularly helpful are the appendices provided at the end of the book including: a Time Line, Further Information (providing websites, videos and books for further reading), economy and culture facts, a glossary, and maps that situate the cultural and economic aspects of Israel. Three authentic Israeli recipes are included that can easily be made by readers 9-12.

This book provides a thorough and well-written introduction to the land of Israel. The book covers everything from geography, history, government, economy, environment, Lifestyle, Religion, Language, Arts, Leisure, Festivals to Food.

The book is particularly outstanding because of its ability to capture the character of the country and its people. The prose are beautifully written bringing the country and its people to life. It is a must have for libraries that want complete and timely material for projects, individuals preparing for a trip to Israel and/or anyone looking for complete yet concise information concerning this country. We read in this book that Syria and Egypt's massive attack on Israel in 1973 was "caused" by "Israel's insistence on keeping all of Jerusalem and retaining the recently acquired occupied territories."(p. 29)We also read that Palestinians on the West Bank are "subjected to mass arrests.The Israelis cited security considerations to justify these acts."(p. 17).No word here or elsewhere about Palestinian terrorism, only about the Israeli response.Here is the book's explanation of the Zionist movement:"The goal of Zionism was to establish a homeland where Jews would not be a minority: because no matter where the Jews lived [in the Diaspora], they would be spiritual prisoners of a non-Jewish society--meaning, they would always question what the non-Jewish world might say about their every move."(p. 62)No word here about pogroms, discriminatory laws, expulsions, death camps.Not recommended. ... Favorable - Familes in Ancient Israel
This book's first strength is that it is divided into sections which describe the family based upon each scholar's area of expertise. So, Meyers takes the archaeological discussion, and Perdue takes the theological discussion.
Meyers does a good job of describing the way in which rural settings differ from urban settings in terms of the family. She uses inductive logic to demonstrate her position about the family in Ancient Israel. Meyers describes hard evidence in the material culture, such as the shape and design of houses, and then makes statements about the amount of occupants based on population densities in other rural
villages in the world. So, her numbers aren't hard facts, but they are probably excellent ideas.

However, the system has shifted in recent decades, becoming increasingly privatized and market-based. In a familiar paradox, the wealthy, the young, and the healthy have relatively easy access to health care, and the poor, the old, and the very sick confront increasing obstacles to medical treatment.

In Circles of Exclusion, Dani Filc, both a physician and a human rights activist, forcefully argues that in present-day Israel, equal access to health care is constantly and systematically thwarted by a regime that does not extend an equal level of commitment to the well-being of all residents of Israel, whether Jewish, Israeli Palestinians, migrant workers, or Palestinians in the Occupied Territories.

Filc explores how Israel's adoption of a neoliberal model has pushed the system in a direction that gives priority to the strongest and richest individuals and groups over the needs of society as a whole, and to profit and competition over care. Highly Recommended
At first blush one might think that a book on Israeli health care would only interest a narrow range of specialists.Not so Circles of Exclusion.Filc understands that we can't comprehend a complex political, social, cultural, and economic system such as health care without examining its historical development.He therefore embeds the story of Israeli health care in a broader historical narrative of Palestine and the state of Israel that stretches from the Ottoman period to the present day.
