A fine introduction for young readers
This is one of those books published by an educational publisher for the purpose of selling more books to school libraries; the authors have published children's books in every field imaginable, and so are experts on everything and nothing.This might explain the page in this book that says that "many famous musicians, such as Zubin Mehta, have come from Israel" (Mehta is, of course, Indian).That said, this is a perfectly fine book for readers 4-8; most of each page is a picture, with no more than 25 words per page in big print.(Do tell your kids that Mehta is not an Israeli, however.) ... Too simplistic
I was a bit disappointed in this book-it was written as if Israeli children were writing letters to American students. I felt like it was talking down to the kids. It does cover some important information and for younger children it may be very good, but does not meet my needs in teaching to the intermediate students. The photos are in black and white and it has illustrations. I did like some of the activities included in the book which I may use with the 10-12 year olds. Also, the book was published in 1978 and a lot has changed since then, making some of the information on current day life incorrect. ... Read more

It has frequently been argued that proportional representation leads to national politics with little or no regional representation. We examine this in the case of the two most extreme cases of proportional representation, Israel and the Netherlands. We find that actually there are very distinct patterns of geographical representation. Although central metropolitan areas are somewhat over-represented in the legislatures, so are the most peripheral regions. This is due to the fact that parties tend to choose representatives from the geographical regions where they expect to be electorally competitive. Furthermore, proportional representation does not necessarily lead to nationally competitive parties, as in Israel.
