OUR COUNTRY'S POLITICIANS NEED TO READ THIS BOOK
Finally, a book that tells the reality of our nation's prisons. Our politicians do NOT want this information to become general public knowledge because that would mean (GASP) that everyone would learn that our system of corrections simply does not work. These politicians would do well to read the book and discover why their methods of crime control and deterrence cannot, and will not, work.

Brilliant Research

Great Book!
This book has actually helped me a lot. I've never read another book though. It's great to find out what different types of procrastinator you are and seeing how to overcome it. I haven't gotten to implementing a life change but I reread the book when I know I'm being too lazy or procrastinating too much for my own good. As an overall there is some change it's just not complete.

best for people just realizing that they do this
I have mixed feelings about this book (I guess a three star review usually means that).

If you are just realizing that you procrastinate, then this is a good book to start with - it puts a large focus on identifying styles of procrastination. This can be useful, and the stories - that seemed all too believable - that emphasize the effects of procrastination definitely make an impact.

However, if you are pretty aware of your styles of procrastination and thought-habits around it (I was when I read this), then I am not sure that it is very helpful. For example, when I took the "style quiz", I found that I scored fairly highly for several styles, but not super-highly for any of them. So... everything "sort of" applies... which means that the division into styles was only a bit helpful for me.

I didn't find that this book led to significant changes in habits or significant new insights. Still, some of the stories have stayed with me, so... it's a three star book.

If you are just at the stage of admitting that you procrastinate - well, I'd say buy this book! Otherwise, don't...

A Gift of Time!
As a lifelong procrastinator on her way down the hill, I have read MANY books on this subject as I try to conquer my problem. This book is the best for me. Others who criticize the categorization may not realize that no one fits into one niche. Because I fit into three categories, I do the exercises for all of them. The visualization exercises are so powerful they bring me to tears! I don't understand why, as they are abstract, but my reaction tells me they are hitting the mark.

I have improved my productivity greatly by DOING the exercises in this book. For me, learning the causes behind my behavior helped me to make better use of my time, most days now! For the rest of them, I have learned to be more forgiving and not become frozen in the self-blame and guilt that contribute to the problem. Each day is not just another day to put things off, but another day to try again!

What a great source of help
This was not my first nor last book on procrastination. If you're like me, you read self-help books seeking out the little nugget of gold that is going to help make your life better once you put into practice your newfound wisdom. That's just what I find with Linda Sapadin's book.

While others may frown upon her mode of classification, its forgivable given the mountainous job it is to delve into the psychology of just one person. As a procrastinator, I used books on organization, goal setting and self-motivation. But Sapadin's book helped me to locate the "real" reason I was accomplishing less than I am fully capable of achieving.

I joyfully recommend this book to anyone still grappling with issues of procrastination. You may not like being stereotyped, but your can easily overlook that once you get the results you're after, less procrastinating and more "getting things done".

Excellent, well written, and useful to managers
Rajan Suri has produced an excellent book about the Quick Response Manufacturing (QRM) method that he and his students have pioneered. This is not just a proposal: QRM is an established method, used by large numbers of companies over more than a decade. It has produced striking improvements in profitability by reducing wasted time in process, thus reducing both expense and customer waiting time. Especially in the recent recession, some users have credited this method with helping their companies to survive.

Unlike Suri's 1998 technical book on QRM, this one is aimed at senior managers. There's very little technical material but a lot of clear explanation of how implementing QRM changes the business process and improves performance. It's clearly written and very readable, with many specific examples from real companies to illustrate the benefits.

This is good reading for managers, not only in manufacturing but also in many service industries where QRM is also applicable. I highly recommend it.

The Future of Manufacturing
If you think you understand manufacturing and you aren't familiar with Rajan Suri's time-based theories and strategies you are in danger of becoming seriously out-of-date.A lot of company's have made a lot of money through adoption of the Toyota Production System (TPS). TPS success is based on a high volume/low variability demand.That world is disappearing and manufacturers who realy on TPS to minimize their non-productive waste will find that going forward it no longer produces the results it once did.This book presents both a supplementary and alternative approach to TPS that adapts to the modern demand environment.

The book is very well written and very easily read.It is valuable on many levels, from defining practical shop floor practices to helping executive officers understand more effective "big picture" strategies.The issues Suri brings up relative to Standard Accounting Principles--- and the negative impact they can have on manufacturing efficiencies--- are beginning to be heard in many places. No-one, however, describes these issues, or how to effectively address them, as well as Suri does.Even though the ideas and strategies in this book are based on complicated system dynamics (queueing theory) Suri is able to present them without taking the reader into too much academic detail--- although I will say that his recommentations on batch sizing require him to introduce some.

This book is a "must" read for everyone who needs to understand how to compete in manufacturing in the 21st century, particularly those who currently believe that off-shore sourcing is actually a low cost strategy.Rajan Suri ideas have more depth and make more sense than those of most of the better-know manufacturing gurus.I have little doubt that at some point his work will gain more visibility--- perhaps with this publishing of this book--- and a lot of manufacturing's current standard practices will be thrown for a loop because of it.

This Stuff Works
It's About Time is a follow-on book to Rajan Suri's original book on Quick Response Manufacturing (QRM). I pre-ordered the book because I have used QRM and can say without a doubt that it works in both office and manufacturing situations. I used QRM principles in the office with an 83% time reduction and have used it in manufacturing with a 64% time reduction. These techniques were used in a highly variable mixed-model environment where previous consultants failed (after spending mega-bucks) using "straight lean" techniques. Don't get me wrong, lean has its place, but QRM solves many of the issues that lean does not (especially in mixed model "job shop" type environments).
Rajan's new book provides many additional practical insights and explanations based on the 10+ years of QRM success. The CD containing the appendicies is a nice touch to explain some of the concepts in greater detail. This is a great book which answers many of the day-to-day dilemmas facing industry,office, and service businesses today. The book reads fast and is hard to put down.

Very cute, but some issues with story
This is a very cute book, adorable illustrations, easy introduction to telling time. I didn't like that it said "oh, yuck! It's peas!", at dinner time. I have enough trouble about veggies in my house, without confirmation like this!
Everything goes along peacefully, but suddenly, on page 18, at 9pm, the kid goes to bed and it says, "The lights go out. It's dark in here!". Then on the other side of the page it says, "Scary shadows creep" and shows some creepy, smiling, ghoulish, shadow people. I knew right then that I could not show it to my child as a bedtime book, and maybe not at all. The next page has a monster come in at 11pm, but it is friendly at least. The scary shadowface looks terrified and the monster saves the child. I do find it weird and confusing that on the left side it is 11pm and the child is reaching for the monster and smiling, but on the right is the monster and it says it is 12am and he is responding to the child. It is one big picture with two times. It does this again on the shadow page, showing both 9 and 10pm, for one big picture.
We have a little of the typical young child reluctance for bed, creeps of the dark, and dread of unknown monsters and shadows. There is no way I am bringing this book into our lives right now and giving more life to those fears. Luckily, I checked it out from the library before actually purchasing it. It is such a shame too, because it is such a great and simple first introduction. I also realize that not all kids would be creeped out and the shadows aren't terribly scary, just somewhat scary. The monsters are fun and friendly and not scary at all and are there to "keep me safe". In theory, I might think that this book is acknowledging the truth, that some kids hate peas and are scared of shadows and dark, but I know it will give my kid something to think about and may come back to haunt me. If your kid isn't easily frightened, this is a great book in most ways.
From midnight on to 6am, there is a fun romp from hour to hour with the silly monsters. It is cute, but never is there any indication that the child has slept and that this is a dream. In fact, at 6 am it says, "now it is comfy cozy time" and the child has snuggled down to sleep finally, with all of the monsters gone. One hour later, it is wake up time. It looks like he slept from 6am to 7am. It doesn't say, or indicate at all that it was a dream. I would have shown him drift off and made the dream look different or shown a sort of cloud around it, with the kid asleep in the corner of the page or something. It is confusing, to me.
I would like to see another book like this, with some different content around the sleeping hours, because it is a great idea, to me, to show what the kid does from hour to hour all day. Teaching time telling by hours first, and showing both the analog and digital clocks, in a cute story format, is just how I'd like to teach this, I'm just not sure this is the book for me.

Lots of Adding
This book is better for second grade students and above for follow through activites.It was excellent as we counted together the school days activities in small increments for first grade.

It's About Time.... a timely book
This book by Stuart Murphy is part of his MathStart series.It covers time by relating the hours of the day to a little boy's activities: waking up, meals, going to school, playing, going home, story time, nap time, bath time, going to bed, etc.[If you are wondering about the early morning hours, they are spent frolicking with some friendly dream-monsters that dance and caper about.]

The book focuses only on the `hour' but I think for a start that is perfect. After a child can read the hours reliably they can move on to the half-hour, quarter hours, etc.

Each hour in this book is given a page which demonstrates not only how that hour is spent but both a digital and conventional (analog) representations of the time. The artwork is colorful and sweet and my only real complaint is that I wish they had separated the pictures of the analog clock from that of the digital clock because it makes it hard to `test' whether a child can read the traditional clock.(Digital seems so much easier for some reason.)

As with all of Mr. Murphy's books there are suggestions for how to teach time at the end of the book as well as various practice/exercise ideas.In addition, in this book, the author has a recommended reading list of three other books about time:Clocks and More Clocks by Pat Hutchins; My First Book of Time by Claire Llewllyn; and Train Leaves the Station by Eve Merriam.

You might also try a video called Rock N' Learn: Telling Time that has been useful in reinforcing the concept of reading clocks around our house.


NOTE:As for the age recommendation, I think this book would also be good for a younger child.With my just turned 3 year old we discuss just how time passes and how we have certain activities that we do at the same time each day.

A good book, but not an easy one
This book was produced from the lectures given for many years by the author for a course on Relativity that was given to Cornell University non-science majors.Aimed at an audience of non-scientists one would expect a watered-down, simplified book.While only basic algebra is utilized, with the introduction of almost no Physics, this is far from a watered-down or simple book.As the author clearly states, this in not a book that can be read like a novel.It requires deep concentration and a lot of patience to follow what is presented, but in the end the reader is rewarded for their efforts with a deeper understanding of what the Einstein's Theory of Relativity is all about- it's all about time.I have previously read the general treatments of relativity written by Einstein, Martin Gardner, Richard Wolfson, David Bohm, Max Born and the sections on relativity in Richard Feynman's physics text.Even with a considerable background I found a new understanding of the subject.

Unlike most relativity books, this one does not start with the reason's why Einstein developed a new way of looking at time and space and in doing so overturned Newton's ideas of time and space.The book focuses on the problem of examining events from different frames of reference, and in doing so develops the ideas of relativity without any detailed physics arguments, beyond the idea that the speed of light is the same for all observers, regardless of their velocity.The arguments are all logical and geometrical.Gradually one learns how events may or may not be simultaneous when viewed in the same or different frames of reference, how velocities combine, how time measured on a clock can be a function of the velocity at which the clock moves and how this leads to new concepts of space and time - to space-time.While relatively straight forward at first, the text got much more complex as it progressed and became so complex that after a while I found myself longing for the simplification of a bit more complex mathematics.In fact, it drove home to me how much mathematics can simplify a problem and how difficult things can get when one tries to do without it.

I found the first half of the book to be somewhat challenging, but in the end quite understandable.Unfortunately, I found the next third of the book to be much less clear.This portion of the book deals with the analysis of a "train of rockets" and the idea of space-time.Instead of dealing with the standard approach to space-time, Professor Mermin utilizes his own approach using the ideas of equiloc and equitemp, that he developed.I found this approach far more difficult to grasp than the conventional one.While it does bring out many features of space-time, it requires a difficult exercise in visualization, and in the end is used to only derive equations that had previously been derived in other, and in my opinion, much more assessable ways.I am sure that in Professor Memin's classes he assign's home work problems and discusses their solutions and in this way helps the student more firmly grasp the equiloc/equitemp concepts and how they are used.Studying this approach without them is, in my opinion, very difficult and a bit frustrating.One hopes that these might be included in future editions, or at least this section should be enlarged. The last sixth of the book deals with energy and mass, general relativity and why relativity may be as it is.I particularly liked the energy/mass chapter as it presents the subject in a modern manner, as opposed to the other books that I have read that follow Einstein's approach.This new approach utilizes the concept of mass being invariant in all frames of reference, so it is not a function of its velocity.Instead the analysis is done in terms of relativistic momentum.

Given that I liked this book and learned a lot form it, why am I giving it only four stars, instead of five?This is definitely not a book for someone who just wants to understand a bit about Relativity.For them I would recommend Gardner's book (Relativity Simply Explained) or the one by Wolfson (Simply Einstein).I would, however, recommend this book to someone, like myself, who has a reasonable general background in Relativity but is not studying the subject in a college course, with the understanding that this is a difficult book.I think that the book is best suited for a physics major studying relativity from another text.Physics professors who teach relativity will probably also like this book.I am thus giving the book only four stars because I do not think that it is a good choice for the stated target audience and I would like to be a slight counterweight to some of the five-star reviews that recommend this book without any reservations.

Relativity
Relativity is a damned hard subject to fully comprehend, but it is an important part of being an educated person.Without this knowledge, one can occasionally make a serious mistake in judgment and be dead wrong about certain things.David Mermin explains the necessary thinking in a beautiful, skillful way.I can't imagine his making it clearer or simpler, but nevertheless, it is a HARD bit of reasoning to master.This short book requires reading word-for-word and then some rereading, but this is not a burden.It is written with a light, pleasant touch that is a delight and I fully recommend it to anyone ready to make a serious effort at understanding the real world.

Immensely helpful on various levels
This is fantastic.The best thing is that it teaches the reader relativity via its mathematics and not just through words. The author also labels those mathematics that are perhaps too hard clearly for readers to skip if he or she likes.Only through the understanding of the mathematics underlying relativity can one really appreciate what it is all about.An immensely amazing book.

What others leave out.
If you've been away from the topic for a while it can be frustrating when you return to it when an author makes great leaps in logic or even algebra. This books fills in those details nicely for casual or rusty readers.

The one piece that is missing (and seems to be missing from all relativity texts) that would be great for the casual reader is a discussion of the evidence (theoretical and experimental) for the constancy of the speed of light. Since relativistic derivations take this as a given it would nice to be reminded how we know this is so.

It's About Time
Introduction of formulas a priori with only consecutive derivation is preceptionally inadequate. This combined with too a verbose and insufficiently organized progress of the argument makes for an uneasy reading. ... Read more

Too Short and Too Trivial
This book contains are variety of historical events. But, as the subtitle says, its main selling point is keeping in perspective just how long these famous events took.

There are some interesting bits and entries in the book, but it just did not do it for me. First, the book contains mostly American-centric events. Each entry gets only one page each and half of said page is taken up by some picture. The problem with this is too often there is too much detail that needs to be left out. The author's choice of certain events is also strange. Take the book's first entry about the famous picture of the flag raising during the Battle of Iwo Jima. It would make more sense to say how long the battle itself took, but instead the author says the picture was taken in 1/400th of a second. Who cares?

If the book was more focused on events when the length of time should be important in studying the event, then this book could have been greater. There are some great examples of this in the book such as how an hour and forty-two minutes on the morning of September 11, 2001 changed the world or Strom Thurmond's record filibuster.

There are also some examples of factual errors. One reviewer already mentioned the incorrect date for the start of the American Civil War. I also noted the incorrect picture of the crew of Apollo 13 and Bill Clinton's age incorrectly given as 42 at the time of his impeachment.

In conclusion, this is not a particularly bad book, but it is not really good either. It might be okay to leave on your coffee table for friends to look at, but the lack of detail makes this book a poor choice for someone seriously interested in history.

Overuse of the already OVERRATED Titanic
The author devotes two passages, or chapters if you will, to the completely historically --and politically-- unimportant Titanic. One chapter is how long it took the ship to sink to sink. Another is how many years the overrated ship stayed at the bottom of the sea. What's wrong Flannagan couldn't find anything better to write about or are you just a real Titanic-nerd? Even the chapter on the politically important sinking ship, the Lusitania (which launched the USA into WW1 two years later) has a reference to the trivial Titanic!

It'saboutTime
This book is for readers of all types, occasional readers, history buffs, frequent readers, and even mystery novel readers! The detail and details on each subject is quite amazing! For instance most Americans would not believe the Gettysburg address took only 2 minutes to deliver by President Lincoln and the main speaker at the event spoke for 2 hours! Most Americans would not believe that we have not set foot on the moon since 1972! Most Americans remember John Glenn as a U.S. Senator and Astronaut but few know that he flew 59 combat missions in World War II! It is these important details of history and time that make this book so wonderful to read and appreciate. It doubles as a coffee table book because when friends come over, they immediately pick it up and start reading it! It is worth double or triple the price I paid for it! I heartily recommend this book to readers of all ages, young and old who want appreciate history and the Time it took to make that history!

Mildly Intereresting Gimmick Book
This book is easy reading and has some interesting tibits.However, some of the events the author chooses for his timeline are on the trivial side--for instance, the trial of Bill Mitchell.Some historical events are simplified--unavoidable certaintly, but also occasionally unfortunate.It is questionable whether the Mongol Empire really lasted 490 years.Very little of it was left at its end for it to really have been considered an empire.There is at least one typo--I seem to recall more--but the Civil did NOT begin on "April 12, 1862" (p. 48).Flanagan, the author, says so at the top of the page.Then there is question of how he decided which events to include in this timeline.Obviously, an effort was made to include events that increased a bit more in their time span one after another--a difficult task, to be sure--but the question at the end of a book without a theme other than time is, so what?

A must have for anyone who likes Italian cooking
I ordered this book based on one recipe that he did on morning television. I liked his style and personality and when I tried the recipe, it was wonderful! I read other reviews and they were all good. Some made mention about the stories he wrote to accompany each recipe. They were right, the stories were very funny and informative.

I have picked quite a few recipes that I will try. The original one I tried was red wine braised brisket. I am going to cook it for my Mom on Mother's Day. If you like Italian food, you should add this to your cookbook collection!

Great Food in Boston
We ate at Great Bay on a visit to Boston this weekend. I perused Mr. Schlow's cookbook before our dinner. I am looking forward to preparing a number of the dishes. It seems to have recipes that I can use on "hurry up" nights, and others that I can linger over.

Crazy
I am one of those nine to fivers but when I am home I become a chef. At least that is my fantasy while my family shovels down things I would have never dreamed of when I was a child growing up in the same town as MSchlow. Mike is right on the money. And I am not just blowing smoke up his (*^%%. I have a ton of great books, great cook ware and I've been "doin it". This book helps those "want to believe they are chefs" like myself jump up a level and feel proud of their creations. Whether you go strictly by the book or you use some of the fantastic tips from Michael, you will keep this book on the top of the stack! Bravo!!
