Extractions: Curricular Materials for Younger Learners Linda Worman has taught for 25 years in Indiana's Bluffton-Harrison school district. Her experience has ranged from the Kindergarten level through high school. She has been a Japanese mentor teacher working with JALEX assistant teachers for the past six years. This Japan Digest was made possible through the generous support of the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership. Building a Japanese Language Program from the Bottom Up September 1998 The past fifteen years have seen the establishment of a variety of less-commonly taught "critical language" programs to teach those languages the U.S. government perceives to be of strategic national importance or that students deem as necessary for career development in a global economy. Specifically, Japanese language study experienced a remarkable 94.9 percent growth between 1985 and 1990. The success of new programs depends on a number of specific factors which ultimately determine survival or extinction. Building student interest and a learning foundation at the elementary/middle school level can be a key element to establishing and maintaining a successful language program.

The Japan In A Suitcase presentations, aimed at elementary school audiences, and the Japanese Language and Culture Visits, for high school age students, have been extremely well received since their inception in 1994. Within these pages, you can find out more about Japan In The Schools, volunteer for the program, and view the Kentaro curriculum. Japan in a Suitcase Program Japan in a Suitcase presents a day in the life of a Japanese child using visual aids and authentic items from Japan to make the experience as real as possible. Common items used by Japanese children in everyday life - at home and in school - are brought to the school in a suitcase and used to show how a young Japanese boy spends a typical day, from morning to night. Pairs of volunteers make the presentations: English speakers facilitate the lesson and lead discussion, while their Japanese partners provide exposure to the language and act as native experts. Japanese Language and Culture Visits This project is to provide a total-immersion Japanese language experience to secondary school students. Near-native to native fluency is required in oral and written Japanese language.

After having several different types of sushi, I looked in my English-Japanese dictionary for a word to let the chef know I was finished and for him to tell me how much money I owed ... so I came up with the word ... ikura (how much)? He nodded and made two servings of ikura (fish roe).

Japanese-language Schools Necessary Items Personal Accounts When a student goes abroad to study, the student normally gains admission to a college or university before departing his or her country. Ideally, you will leave for Japan after gaining admission to an institute of higher learning. However, the general case of studying in Japan begins with a student first enrolling in a Japanese language-institute. The student will study Japanese and other subjects for one to two years and then take a university entrance examination before enrolling in a university. Therefore, the choice of a good Japanese-language institute becomes extremely important for students wishing to enter Japanese university undergraduate or graduate courses in the future.
